Cupressus arizonica var. glabra, known as the Arizona smooth bark cypress or smooth Arizona cypress, is a conifer native to the American Southwest, with a range stretching over the canyons and slopes in a somewhat wide vicinity around Sedona, Arizona. It was first described by George Bishop Sudworth in 1910.[3] It is distinguished from Cupressus arizonica var. arizonica by its very smooth, non-furrowed bark which can appear in shades of pink, cherry, and grey.[citation needed] It is often seen in cultivation, as unlike Monterey Cypress, it has proved almost immune to Cypress Canker. ...
Cupressus dupreziana, the Saharan cypress, Moroccan cypress,[1] or tarout, is a very rare coniferous tree native to the Tassili nAjjer mountains in the central Sahara desert, southeast Algeria, where it forms a unique population of trees hundreds of kilometres from any other trees. There are only 233 specimens of this critically endangered species, the largest about 22 m tall. The majority are estimated to be over 2000 years old, with very little regeneration due to the increasing desertification of the Sahara. Rainfall totals in the area are estimated to be about 30 mm annually. The largest one is named Tin-Balalan is believed to be the oldest tarout tree with a circumference of 12 meters or 36 feet. This species is distinct from the allied Cupressus sempervirens (Mediterranean cypress) in its much bluer foliage with a white resin spot on each leaf, the smaller shoots often being flattened in a single plane. It also has smaller cones, only 1.5-2.5 cm long. Cupressus atlantica (Moroccan ...

Recombinant Cup a 1, the major allergen of Cupressus arizonica pollen, was shown to be highly homologous with the major allergens of Mountain cedar (Jun a 1), Japanese cypress (Cha o 1) and Japanese cedar (Cry j 1). As expected, the high degree of homology with Cha o 1, Jun a 1 and Cry j 1 explains the cross-reactivity of conifer pollens. Different IgE reactivity with the glycosylated and non-glycosylated protein suggests the importance of carbohydrate moieties in the IgE binding site (7, 8). In a mouse model, the common antigenicity at the T-cell level between Japanese cedar and cypress pollen allergens was demonstrated to be caused by the existence of an identitical-cell epitope in Cry j 1 and Cha o 1 (9). These studies also indicated that Cry j 1 and Cha o 1 share their B-cell epitope but not their T-cell epitope (10 ...

Pelargonium (type of geranium), Cupressus Sempervirens (Cypress) and Melaleuca quinquenervia viridiflora (Niaouli) are three essential oils that I know of that are used in solutions to cure hemroids.. Italian cypress (cupressaceae) essential oil may be a suitable substitute if you cannot get the cupressus sempervirens, as it too acts as a vasoconstrictor (contracts the muscle in blood vessels, causing the blood vessels to narrow), astringent (contracts the tissues around the blood vessels, thereby reducing or stopping blood flow) and antiseptic (germ killer), but you would need to check this out further.. Niaouli acts to cure hemroids and promotes symptom relief as well. Niaoulis analgesic properties helps to deaden the pain of hemroids, while its cicatrisant properties encourages healing via the formation of scars on damaged areas, presumably including the area the hemroid falls off from as well. The essential oils properties of being an antiseptic and bactericide, aids healing by preventing ...

Cupressus sempervirens belonging to the Family Cupressacea, is an evergreen conifer, which grows to a height of 25 to 45 metres (62 to 142 feet). This well-known columnar, sometimes called "Italian" cypress has been known in Mediterranean countries since antiquity. Both the Greeks and the Romans planted these trees on temple and burial grounds, and even today, in temperate countries this tree is associated with parks and cemeteries. Guenther describes Cypress as "..a tree of serene beauty, blending well into the Mediterranean landscape; its dark foliage contrasts with the lucid sky, and etches delicate silhouettes against the blue sea." A colourless to pale yellow green essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the cones, twigs and needles. The yield, quality and chemical components of the oil will depend upon the condition of the plant material and the method and length of the distillation. Only young branches and adherent leaves should be used. The yield from fresh terminal ...

Italian Cypress, Swanes Golden Italian Cypress). Swanes Golden Italian cypress is a very narrow, columnar evergreen tree native to western Asia and southern Europe. Its soft-scaled needles are short and wispy and are golden yellow, and help hide the small oval cones. The look of the needled branches is somewhat billowy along the tall vertical shape of the tree.. Grow golden Italian cypress in full sun in average to dry soil with good drainage. Although it grows in several warm temperate climates, it will be troublesome to maintain in regions.... ...

This species is widely planted in northern districts of the North Island, where it grows moderately rapidly. It is often planted in conjunction with willows or poplars, because it is particularly shade tolerant. It can be used as the slower growing species in both boundary and internal shelterbelts. It does not perform well in the South Island.. Leyland cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii). Several clones of Leyland cypress are available, the most commonly planted being "Leighton Green". Other clones include "Naylors Blue", "Green Spire", "Haggerston Grey", and "Castlewellan Gold". All these clones can be affected by cypress canker, but they are more resistant than other Cupressus species.. They are relatively fast growing for an evergreen species, and eventually grow into large trees. Their major use is for boundary shelter in districts exposed to salt-laden winds. Regular side trimming is required (they are prone to heavy-side branching) but this may cause the shelterbelt to become too dense ...
We use the Tecate cypress (Cupressus forebesii Jeps.), a fire-adapted short-lived tree species endemic to southern California and northern Baja, Mexico, as a model to examine whether more than a century of fire regime difference across the US-Mexico international border has selected for different reproductive life history traits, produced different population demographics, and generated different genetic variability among perennial plant populations. Our hypotheses are that Baja populations, being subjected to a more variable and fine grained fire regime, should exhibit multiple age classes, older tree age at maturity, facultative serotiny, and greater among-population genetic variability. California populations on the other hand, being subjected to a very narrow variation in mostly stand-replacement fire regime resulting from strict fire suppression management, should exhibit fewer age classes, younger tree age at maturity, obligate serotiny, and lower among-population genetic variability. ...

t tree species remains largely unknown. This study involved assessing changes in soil phosphorus (P) over a 10 year period following the afforestation of grazed pasture with 3 contrasting tree species (Pinus radiata, Cupressus macrocarpa, Eucalyptus nitens) in a replicated field trial at Orton Bradley Park, New Zealand. A combination of techniques (sequential fractionation, alkaline phosphatase hydrolysable P, solution ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) was used to quantify changes in the nature and bioavailability of soil P. Results revealed that the establishment and growth of trees caused a significant decrease in soil organic P within 10 years, indicating net organic P mineralisation. Surprisingly this trend was similar under all three tree species, which suggested similar soil P acquisition despite differences in the type of mycorrhizae associated with each species: P. radiata is ectomycorrhizal, C. macrocarpa is arbuscular mycorrhizal, and E. nitens can beectomycorrhizal or ...

There may be many different options to choose from to create privacy screening. A landscape designer would consider the specific conditions of your site before considering looks: sun/shade exposure, damp/dry soil, narrow/wide planting area, to name a few. Then within the set of plants that will thrive in those conditions, I would consider the functional attributes of the plants themselves: evergreen/deciduous, clumping/spreading, toxic/nontoxic, short/tall, fast/slow growth, high/low water needs, and so on. Finally, within that subset of plants that have appropriate features, I would choose the plants that fit the aesthetic look you prefer: the Italian Cypress used here work well with a formal, classic style, while bamboo species (and there are many!) may convey a more tropical or Asian feeling. Even the same plant could be used different ways: Pittosporum tenuifolium can be clipped tightly to create a formal hedge, or left loose for a natural, shrubby look. ...
Long time fire photographer Jeff Zimmerman sent us these photos he shot Thursday at the Tick Fire near Santa Clarita in southern California.. Here is his description:. "As flames swept out of Tick Canyon into the Shadow Pines neighborhood in Los Angeles County, it became a race against time to evacuate a disabled woman who was trying to save her home. Barefoot and with a walker, we found this woman frantically trying to save her home with a garden hose. We pulled out our booster line from our volunteer fire patrol to stop spot fires on neighboring property as ash and soot were raining down on her vehicle. We had just minutes to get her shoes, her dog and get her loaded into her vehicle. She was crying hysterically but we were able to get her to safety as fire swept down the street.. "At great personal risk Volunteer Denise Shippy went inside her home to retrieve car keys, shoes and the family dog as I was able to hold back spot fires. Flames erupted across the street in Italian Cypress trees as ...
Good evening. This will be a Christmas message that probably isnt going to feel like one, but I promise you it is one. It will help us get ready for Friday night. This is simply serving as a setup for all that. So Ill leave you a little bit hanging tonight, maybe even in despair, but I promise it gets to be better. Now my wife is in this room tonight, so you can know that what Im about to say is accurate. I have not historically been the biggest fan of Christmas. I resent having to put the lights out. I think its risking my life, and I dont quite understand for what. The pitch of our roof is insane. So the thought of me being on a ladder hanging up lights or me trying to wrestle an Italian Cyprus tree or me weaving my way through bushes making lights that are uniformly placed is enough to drive me insane. In fact, most years Lauren just starts doing it herself to shame me. So when people go, "Oh your lights look great," she can go, "Thank you. I appreciate that. Matt was watching ...

(48 days) This alluring wine-red European batavian disappeared from commerce for a while before Frank Morton rescued it. And a worthy rescue it was, for Cardinale is a classic both for baby leaf and full head production. Looks a little like a butterhead-romaine cross, as the open rosettes fold together like a romaine in the center at full maturity. Shiny red leaves on the outside, green in the center, crisp and juicy with some heft. Survived temperatures in the teens in Janine Welsbys unheated Ohio greenhouse under a double layer of Covertan PRO 19 topped with old bed sheets.

Gene expression is orchestrated by distinct regulatory regions to ensure a wide variety of cell types and functions. A challenge is to identify which regulatory regions are active, what are their associated features and how they work together in each cell type. Several approaches have tackled this problem by modeling gene expression based on epigenetic marks, with the ultimate goal of identifying driving regions and associated genomic variations that are clinically relevant in particular in precision medicine. However, these models rely on experimental data, which are limited to specific samples (even often to cell lines) and cannot be generated for all regulators and all patients. In addition, we show here that, although these approaches are accurate in predicting gene expression, inference of TF combinations from this type of models is not straightforward. Furthermore these methods are not designed to capture regulation instructions present at the sequence level, before the binding of regulators or
Résumé: At the North-Ecuadorian convergent margin (1°S-1.5°N), the subduction of the rough Nazca oceanic plate leads to tectonic erosion of the upper plate and complex seismogenic behavior of the megathrust. We used three selected pre-stack depth migrated, multi-channel seismic reflection lines collected during the SISTEUR cruise to investigate the margin structure and decipher the impact of the subducted Atacames seamounts on tectonic erosion, interseismic coupling, and seismogenesis in the region of the 1942 Mw7.8 earthquake. This dataset highlights a subducted ∼30×40 km∼30×40 km, double-peak seamount that belongs to the Atacames seamount chain and that is associated with a deep morphologic re-entrant containing mass transport deposits. The seamount subduction uplifted the margin basement by ∼1.6 km and pervasively broke the margin by deep and intense reverse faulting ahead of the seamount, a process that is likely to weaken considerably the margin. In the seamount wake, the basement ...
