When Andy Hurley performed with Fall Out Boy for the 2013 Victorias Secret fashion show on November 13th, he was given a costume to wear that included a shirt with the Rising Sun on it. The Rising Sun symbol, used by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, has come to represent horrors of…
In the 2003 Grutter v. Bollinger Supreme Court case, Justice Sandra Day OConnor stated that while institutions of higher education have a compelling interest in promoting diversity, affirmative action should ideally be unnecessary within 25 years. During that time, it adopted a socioeconomic-based affirmative action program and implemented the 10 percent rule, which did improve the universitys racial and ethnic diversity. [...] we should not forget what Justice Harry Blackmun wrote in the seminal 1978 Bakke case concerning affirmative action in higher education: In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. The Supreme Court should not remove overnight the tools that universities use to create the diverse campuses that not only benefit their students, but aim to improve the nation as a whole.
Hi, Im Dominica McBride, CEO of Become, Inc. and a member of the AEA Public Statement on Cultural Competence in Evaluation Dissemination Working Group. The working group is charged with spreading the word about the statement and helping evaluators integrate the information from the statement into practice, teaching, policy, etc. At this years conference, we facilitated and attended several sessions on cultural competence. This week, a few of us are sharing our lessons learned from these sessions.. Id like to provide an overarching perspective on the sessions and share some cross-cutting lessons from them. In attending these and other sessions this year, I noticed a couple exciting trends around evaluation and cultural competence:. It seems the importance of cultural competence is catching fire (just thought Id throw that in for the Hunger Games fans). More people are recognizing the significance of this way of thinking and set of skills in evaluation, as I hear it come up more in discourse ...
Australian Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR) has written to the Premier and Attorney General expressing serious concern about NSW One Nation Leader Mark Lathams Education Legislation Amendment (Parental Rights) Bill 2020 (the Bill). ALHR has warned that, if passed, the private members Bill will significantly impact the human rights of LGBT young people. ALHR President Kerry Weste said, The Bill contains numerous very troubling measures including provisions that would prohibit NSW schools from teaching that trans and gender diverse people exist and should be treated with respect for their inherent dignity and right to equality. It would also prohibit NSW school counsellors from affirming a trans or gender diverse student or providing them with any support or referrals to gender affirming support. Further measures in the Bill would place NSW teachers at risk of losing their job when they support a trans or gender diverse student in affirming their identity, and would require NSW schools to ...

Latinx writers, poets, essayists, journalists, and playwrights have won major literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize in literature, drama, and poetry. U.S. Latinx writers come from varying racial, cultural, and geographic locations. As with all literature classes, Latino literature classes will help develop student mastery of analytical reading, interpretation, and effective rhetorical skills. As one part of John Jays overall rigorous curriculum, the LatinxLiterature minor will help students develop effective written communication skills as well as formulate nuanced perspectives on cultural diversity that are necessary for success in personal and professional ...

Throughout my childhood, I was taught to respect my elders by speaking only when spoken to. However, by following this principle, I became self-conscious and quiet when interacting with those older than me. By exposing myself to professional environments since coming to Tacoma Community College (TCC) as a Running Start student, I learned that respect towards others should not be portrayed in the form of silence. Respecting others does not mean losing respect for yourself. This lesson developed strength in my voice, allowing me to help advocate for Washingtons 370,000 community and technical college students. By utilizing our voices, my co-intern, Mustapha Samateh, and I testified before the House Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee in support of HB 1300. This bill will reinvest in the community and technical college system by fulfilling needs such as increasing faculty compensation, providing faculty cultural competency training, and implementing an office of diversity, equity ...
Europe is becoming more social and cultural diverse as a result of the increasing migration, but the medical doctors are largely unprepared. The medical education programmes and teachers have not evolved in line with development of the population. Culturally competent curricula and teachers are needed, to ensure cultural competence among medical doctors and to tackle inequalities in health between different ethnic groups. The objective of this EU financed study is therefore to provide a snapshot of the role of cultural competence in European medical educational programmes. A questionnaire was developed in order to uncover strengths and weaknesses regarding cultural competence in the European medical education programmes. The questionnaire consisted of 32 questions. All questions had an evidence box to support the informants understanding of the questions. The questionnaire was sent by email to the 12 European project partners. 12 completed questionnaires were returned. Though over half of the
Picture a friendly, hip and happening university campus, nestled right in the heart of the Free State capital, Bloemfontein; a university that has produced some of the countrys top thinkers and academics; a university that continues to stand out as a beacon of academic excellence.. Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere, Inc. (ROSE) was established in 2011 to address breastfeeding disparities within the African American community. ROSE seeks to provide intervention at two levels: direct support to mothers and families through lactation management support, and cultural sensitivity training for health care professionals and community partners. The summit encouraged individuals to come together to formulate real, actionable plans to remove the unique barriers faced by African American moms today. This years summit, Organizing for Action: An African American Breastfeeding Campaign, will focus on training participants to be leaders that educate, motivate, and mobilize others to address breastfeeding disparities, while empowering our communities to support breastfeeding families. Sex and Sri Lankas Free Health Policy. Sri Lankas free health policy has meant that we as a country have made great strides in improving the health of our citizens. If we were to compare our free health policy to other countries at a similar development level, the health indicators of Sri Lanka are pretty impressive.. However, we need to understand that although the right policy tools are in place, there are loopholes that have been overlooked or have been difficult to implement due to cultural sensitivity and social stereotypes.. Adolescents have little knowledge of reproductive health with only 50% showing awareness on the subjects of Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV. Young people find it difficult to access information pertaining to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)* (Source: National Youth Policy of Sri Lanka). There is also a sense of shame as well as an assumption of legal barriers to access of necessary services, if unmarried.. Racism is a big issue, and I think were on our way now. People are becoming more vocal. Everyone is becoming more vocal and I think its very important, and its definitely showing.. Voicing an opinion on this as well as other social justice issues is difficult for many athletes and there is no requirement for them to do so. The First Amendment goes both ways in the spirit of the freedom of expression its meant to protect. It has been demonstrated that a non-comment from a person of prominence can be just as impactful. In recent years, public figures have begun to recognize that a divisive, disingenuous, or even honest opinion could attribute the wrath of social media under this very delicate climate, regardless of what they decide to say or do. Our cultural sensitivities are very much frayed to say the least. Just 20 years into a young century that has been loaded with social tumult, wild wage inequities, while also moving at light speed with regards to sweeping scientific and technological ...

Charter schools are a growing force within the school choice movement. Charter school law provides charter schools the freedom to innovate and maintain increased autonomy as long as internal and external accountability mandates are begin met. Despite the growing popularity of charter schools, little is known about charter schools in high stakes testing states and the way they negotiate the intersection of external accountability mandates and internal school mission. This qualitative case study examines a charter school for diverse students in an urban setting. The study describes the practices teachers and the head of school engage in to fulfill the schools mission of preparing all students for college using a rigorous curriculum integrated with an intensive service-learning component;Charter School Accountability Theory provided the framework for data collection, observations, finding, and implications. The Mosaic and Crossing Borders programs both were designed as innovative educational models to encourage culturally diverse students to live, work, and study together in multiple contexts both within the United States and abroad. Dickinson College is a historically white college, and remains predominantly so. We are challenged to engage primarily white students in meaningful dialogues about diversity, even as we work actively to diversify the student and faculty body. Paradoxically, many of our white students report feeling very comfortable at Dickinson when they first visit the campus and when they enroll, yet they also are disappointed by its lack of diversity. With a strong record of excellent global education programs, Dickinson was less effective in confronting issues concerning U.S. pluralism. In order to focus on inter-cultural education and communication-both across and within nations-Crossing Borders envisioned a series of crossings: personal, institutional, disciplinary, linguistic, ...

The effect of ethnic diversity on income - an empirical investigation using survey data from a post-conflict environment. This empirical study is based on nationally representative cross-sectional survey data gathered to investigate the effect of ethnic diversity on personal and family incomes in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), a post-conflict society. The 1992-1995 conflict was harmful for ethnic diversity. Yet, two decades later, where it still exists, ethnic diversity gives rise to positive economic consequences. After controlling for other influences, the authors find lower probabilities of respondents in ethnically diverse neighbourhoods being in the lowest income categories but higher probabilities of being in medium and higher income categories. The largest effects are the reduced probabilities of respondents reporting no income, and are thus particularly relevant to poverty reduction. At the limit, their estimates imply an income gap of more than 20 per cent between a counter-factual ...

Roger Brooke, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. The recent (winter 2001) annual conference of the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology (CUDCP), held in Santa Barbara, was a celebration of clinical psychology. The meeting deserves comment because it identified the two dominant themes of the future of clinical psychology and because CUDCP represents and comprises the most powerful clinical psychologists in America and Canada: the Directors of Clinical Training, who put their mark on the next generation of clinical psychologists. Despite the voluminous recent literature on multiculturalism, and on scientific method, in American Psychologist and elsewhere, there seemed to me to be a certain naivete among my good colleagues that is more problematic than they recognize and that, in the long run, will be self-destructive to our discipline. It is as though we as professional educators have not adequately taken to heart the implications of what we ourselves are saying about ...

In the 2003 landmark Supreme Court case, Grutter v. Bollinger, the Court upheld affirmative action in the University of Michigan Law School admissions process as constitutional because the program furthered a compelling interest in obtaining an educational benefit that flows from student body diversity. During the case, the legal team for the Law School put forth evidence that a diverse student body provided educational benefits to the School, and that diversity promotes learning outcomes and better prepares students for an increasingly diverse workforce, for society, and for the legal profession. In the nearly two decades since, research has deepened our understanding of how, why, and under what conditions diversity yields educational benefits. At the same time, new investigations into the social aspects of racism have shown how systemic racism and implicit bias affect the everyday lives of marginalized groups and contribute to destructive campus cultures that reduce diversity and retention ...

There is a housing crisis in Lancaster County and extremely limited LGBTQ+ affirming housing. Over 70% of our Pandemic Relief Emergency Fund recipients reported housing and rental assistance as their primary need. Currently there are no fully affirming shelters in Lancaster County and bed availability is scarce.. On February 1, 2021, the HEART Program opened its 6-month pilot low-cost housing location, offering individuals sheltering in unaffirming environments a chance to live in a supportive home. The Coalition helps subsidize rent according to each persons individual needs and works with community partners to offer enrichment training, such as budgeting, health resources, and other life skills.. HEART also offers a warm-handoff service to housing and medical services to provide emotional support for program participants. To further ensure resource providers are capable of providing culturally competent services, we provide cultural competency training to community stakeholders and potential ...
We are all so perfectly balkanized now. Everybody is a victim. The white is victimized by affirmative action, the black is victimized by the white, the asian is victimized by the black, the hispanic is victimized by the asian, and the gay person is victimized by all of the above. We feel secure in our unique sub-cultural superiority without ever considering that we all share a common and more important one. We all now believe that we have some kind of civil right to never be offended. Our university campuses are PC cesspools where unicorns and glitter rule over any kind of provocative challenge that might make somebody uncomfortable. Cant have that. Send the offender off to cultural sensitivity training! And when anybody tries to comment, it is impossible. This country has embraced the full-on ad-hominem attack as a legitimate way to ignore a new perspective. Andrew Serwer put it this way: No one can be given credit for speaking from genuine moral or political conviction anymore; everyone can ...

Program Student Learning Outcomes: 1 - Increased Multicultural Competency Awareness of ones own cultural filters, ability to think comparatively across sociocultural contexts, and to apply a culturally relative perspective regarding cultural diversity 2 - Applications of Anthropological Perspectives Development of an anthropological sensibility that enables one to distill social meaning from everyday encounters with individuals, material objects, texts, and other social phenomena, with reference to both past and present human biological, ...
ECG Principal Michael Vivion, PhD, authored this Speak Previews® on issues that affect cross-cultural team communication.. I recently worked with an extended team whose members were Dutch, Belgian, Chinese, Indian, British, and American. The Americans were from Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, Kansas, New York City, and California. We were multi-cultural; we were culturally diverse.. Unfortunately, such designations are often associated with the type of cultural sensitivity training that treats different cultures as examples of exotic social behavior. In Japan, bow and take business cards thoughtfully with both hands. Dont make jokes with Germans. In Arabic countries, use the right hand to shake hands or eat.. For many of us, however, the challenge of cross-cultural communication requires more than figuring out proper dinner etiquette or acceptable greetings, important as they may be. Our need for cultural understanding begins as we walk into the room for our next team meeting; our need ...

While early receipt of and adherence to antiretroviral therapy are critical for effective HIV treatment, engagement with and retention in HIV care are essential first steps. Retention in HIV care is particularly important for traditionally disadvantaged groups, such as Latino MSMs, who are over-represented in the HIV epidemic. HIV+ Latino MSM therefore urgently need interventions to improve their retention in HIV care, which may be affected by a number of culture-specific factors. The goal of this proposal is to culturally adapt and tailor an existing, theory-based intervention, using state-of-the-art methods designed to maximize cultural sensitivity, feasibility and acceptability to HIV+ Latino MSM, and to test it in a small randomized controlled trial (n=60 intervention; n=60 control). The study will be conducted among insufficiently retained HIV+ Latino MSM at AltaMed, the largest provider of HIV medical services for Latinos in Los Angeles. The proposed intervention is designed to retain ...
In Berlin, an adult education centre has hung a collection of nude paintings days after censoring them out of deference to Muslim immigrants in what critics called an overzealous bid at cultural sensitivity.

The goal of the Mayo Clinic Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) is to increase the number of individuals from underrepresented groups who choose biomedical research careers. We are motivated by the concept that a diverse research environment fosters more innovative research than a homogeneous environment. Many training programs seek to enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce. However, few of these programs emphasize the translational research linkage between basic science and improved health. Biomedical research training programs for diverse students often fail to emphasize practical development of the leadership skills actually required for successful careers in biomedical research. The Mayo Clinic Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) bridges these two gaps by preparing learners from underrepresented (UR) groups for successful matriculation and completion of research-intensive biomedical science PhD programs. During the next funding cycle, we ...

Know thyself. As indicated, self-awareness is the first step required to facilitate use of an intersectional practice lens. Carroll (2009) noted that awareness has four components: (a) awareness of self and ones own personal values and beliefs; (b) awareness of others and their multiple identities; (c) awareness of systemic issues such as privilege; and (d) awareness of the implications that professional decisions have on students today, tomorrow, and in the future. In terms of intersectionality, school psychologists should develop awareness of their own intersecting identities and how these identities may have privileged or oppressed them in their personal and professional lives. This is important because school psychologists who are not aware of their own intersecting identities and how those identities shape how they experience the world may have difficulty understanding how diverse students identities can influence their educational and social experiences and outcomes. One activity that ...

To best meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, we must develop an integrative writing pedagogy that is informed by what the cognitive and neurosciences have uncovered about learning so that our theories of learning and practices of instruction are consistent with our most current and accurate knowledge of the biological and psychological processes of brain development and cognition. This dissertation reviews the history of composition studies and reveals the relationship between theories of learning and models of writing. This historical look at composition studies and survey of cognitive theory proves the necessity of reintegrating into writing studies what has been systematically ignored for thirty years. An integrated approach to teaching writing acknowledges that learning happens differently for each individual based on a variety of factors, including biology, psychology, and social circumstance. The second chapter, The Thinking Brain: Scientific,
