Infantile colic is a common painful clinical condition associated with signs of distended intestines and an increase in colon peristalsis. However, clinical documentation of observed gastrointestinal functions in the condition is still lacking. Even though the ailment is common, no clear treatment guidelines exist. While acupuncture with minimal stimulation has been shown to be effective in reducing crying behaviour of infants suffering from colic, the documented effect of acupuncture on gastrointestinal function in children with infantile colic is scarce. This case series study aims to document the symptoms of routinely rated gastrointestinal function and the changes in these symptoms after minimal acupuncture in a larger group of children with infantile colic. This study included 913 infants with normal weights, and lengths at birth. The infants mean age was 5.4 weeks when the observations started, and had colic symptoms since two weeks after birth. Light needling stimulation of the acupuncture point

Background: Infant colic, or excessive crying in an otherwise healthy infant, is common, although the cause(s) are not known. This study aimed to determine whether parental migraine is associated with infant colic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional online survey study of biological parents of 4-8 week olds in the United States during February and March 2017 and October 2017-April 2018. Parents self-reported information about their and their infants health using validated instruments wherever possible. Parents were recruited using social media advertisements and completed the survey online. Migraine was identified with a validated screener using modified International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition criteria. Parental depression and anxiety were screened with the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-2 (GAD-2). Parental seasonal allergies and asthma were assessed by self-report. Infant colic was determined based on parental response to ...

The role of the pediatrician encompasses prevention of abuse and detection and medical management of victims of abuse. Accurate identification of children who are suspected victims of abuse can facilitate appropriate evaluation, referral, investigation, and outcomes for these children and their families.16 Children usually sustain abuse at the hands of a caregiver who misinterprets and responds inappropriately to the childs behavior. For example, caregivers who had smothered, shook, or slapped their infant within the first 6 months of life were more likely to be worried about crying and to believe that their infants cried excessively.17 There is a close correlation between the age-specific incidence curve of infants hospitalized with abusive head trauma and the age-specific normal crying behavior of infants up to 36 weeks of age.18. In an anonymous telephone survey of 1435 mothers, 2.6% of children younger than 2 years were shaken by their mothers as a means of discipline.19 Caregivers may ...

This can be treated by applying pressure to the heel area of the foot.. In conclusion, remember that reflexology is only effective at reducing pain caused by certain conditions and other specific symptoms such as congestion. The entire theoretical structure of Primal Therapy is built on that basic understanding of human need. Those needs evolve over time, in successive stages. As the brain grows, so do our needs. As infants, our needs are few, but they are critical. We need to be fed, to be touched, to be soothed, to be cuddled, to be kept warm, safe and comfortable. The needs are simple but for a helpless baby they hold a life-and-death urgency. Of course, babies cant feed themselves or cover themselves when theyre cold. So instinctively they know they will die without food or perish if left alone. Thats why when babies start wailing to signal their needs, their cries sound so alarming. To them, the danger feels imminent because they dont have the intellectual capacity to reassure themselves that help could be on the way shortly. In fact, they have no way to measure time, except by the satisfaction of their needs. If their needs are promptly met, they feel loved and can continue to grow and flourish. If not, ...

In the open environment of the world wide web, it is natural that there will be multiple providers of services, and that these service provisions - both specifications and implementations - will evolve. This multiplicity gives the user of these services a set of questions about how to choose between different providers, as well as how these choices work in an evolving environment. The challenge, therefore, is to concisely represent to the user the behaviour of a particular implementation, and the differences between this implementation and alternative versions. Inferred models of software behaviour - and automatically derived and graphically presented comparisons between them - serve to support effective decision making in situations where there are competing implementations of requirements. In this paper we use state machine models as the abstract representation of the behaviour of an implementation, and using these we build a tool by which one can visualise in an intuitive manner both the ...
Just one quick comment. In children who grow up truly bilingual, or a family which has some Deaf members and all know sign language, then the immersion process for a child is natural language acquisition. Being surrounded every day by both languages, or, as an example, the barge children of Europe being surrounded by Belgique, French, and German every day is total immersion natural multiple language acquisition. For a bilingual person, both langauges are fluent, neither is accented by the other, so the Portuguese for example, sounds native Portuguese, and the English does not carry over a Latino accent. For children to naturally learn to read both languages they have to be immersed in both all the time, with books, toys, games, songs, everything to do with cultural acquisition, in an open environment. Many children in Latino households in the U.S. do just that, they are immersed in English all day at school, and at home they are immersed in Spanish or Portuguese. The children, not the ...
We think that a Inbalanz of reporting and braking messages between a hypersensitive intestine and the brain is present, explains Professor Koletzko. After all, the gut is after the brain the place in our body with the most nervous. They include provisions on its mobility - and thereby react well to stress. The processing of many new stimuli can more sensitive natures so literally beating on the stomach. Come in exchange of information between the gut and brain in the latter too many activity reports to be even felt normal digestive processes as painful, just the usual crying time in the evening: In addition to the meals numerous impressions of the day now have accumulated. Especially sensitive and easily irritable natures are no longer able to digest everything and their frustration of the soul have to scream. That this phase often begins in the second week of life, is probably a maturation of the nervous system, which starts here. With the progress of developing babies can balance the ...

Dogs and Their Skin Problems. When it is play time, it is the most enjoyable time for a dog. And running around the place is what they do when taken out of the house and brought to an open environment. Some dogs even like taking to the water and this is why when you take them home, they can be dripping wet with all sorts of debris all over their body. It is not bad for dogs to have fun outdoors although sometimes they get skin problems after that.. You need to take your dog to a vet if you want to find out more about their skin problems. Since vets know more about skin problems than we do, we can trust them to recommend the best treatment for this condition. While the final authority is your vet, there are also some things you can do on your own to help prevent and treat some of these issues.. Pruritus is the name they call the condition of a dog having itchy skin, which is the most common skin issues that dogs have. There seems to be some disparity when it comes to being heard. On one hand, at the recent American Academy of Nursing meeting, nursing workforce researcher Dr. Jack Needleman commented about the Quadruple Aim. He made the point that it took the voices of our physician colleagues to have work environment added to the Triple Aim. Were the largest healthcare workforce, with years of study and effort on healthy practice environments; however, it wasnt nursings voice that brought this foundational need to national attention. Are we that invisible?. On the other hand, there are healthcare organizations for which theres deep-seated tension that nursing is heard above all other disciplines, while, at the same time, several studies and even meta-analyses reveal that nurses experience fear and anxiety about speaking up. As leaders, we must create open environments where our staff members voices are heard and acted on, influencing for the right reasons. It always surprises me that when nurses ask for ...

Bowens Policy of No Policies. Nassau Weekly (10/3/85). By Randy Schoenberg. In his speech at Opening Exercises, President Bowen discussed a state of mind that has become all too prevalent at this University and in the United States in general. He believes that institutions should refrain from political actions and moral statements in order to facilitate a more open environment for discussion and research. I question the ability of any institution to completely sever itself from the political and moral world and the desirability of doing so.. Who really benefits from such a system? How can one change policies whose existence an administration denies? And do openness and freedom of discussion merely cloak the hidden conservatism of a policy which maintains the status quo? Bowens speech did not address these questions.. Bowen feels that an institution which maintains no official positions better facilitates open discussion and free argumentation. This reluctance [of universities to take ...

The bad part of the monitor: It is a ball and chain in the most obvious sense. You must drag it everywhere. It comes in a handy little shoulder bag but that is just one more thing. When it is plugged into the wall, you are stuck. When you are pacing with a crying baby you must be careful not to turn in circles or you will tie up your own feet. You must hold onto the cord so that the weight of the cord itself is not pulling on the leads which must be taped to the babys skin since the adhesive does not stick on its own. The skin will develop sores from being covered in tape all the time. No chance to breathe since the only time it is not covered by tape and leads is when the child is actually in the bathtub. You cannot lotion the skin or apply healing ointments because then the leads and tape will not stick next time. You will accidentally unplug the leads or let the battery run out setting off the alarm and scaring both the child and you. The monitor alarm sounds just like other noises in your ...
When listening to or reading baby-training advice, the discerning parent will watch for red flags, such as advice that discourages them from comforting a crying baby, feeding a hungry baby, or keeping their baby close. When implementing a baby-training method, it becomes even more important to watch the baby closely both for cues that indicate an individual need as well as signs of physical danger such as slow weight gain or dehydration. Whatever the advice, the parent should always trust their instincts. When change is needed, gentler alternatives should be explored before harsh baby-training methods. For parents who have followed the advice of baby trainers at the expense of their instincts, expertise, and trust in their childs cues, it is important that the parent/child pair reestablish connection going forward ...
Because infants cry more in their first 3 months than at any other time in their lives, it is often difficult to tell the difference between colic and expected crying behavior. Both types of crying gradually increase, peaking at about 6 to 8 weeks of age. Most crying episodes occur in the late afternoon and evening hours, although the timing may vary. The length and intensity of crying episodes also may change from one day to the next. The difference between colic and normal crying behavior is related to the frequency, duration, and intensity of crying. Babies with colic typically cry for more than 3 hours a day more than 3 days a week for at least 3 weeks in a row. A colicky baby cries very loudly, sometimes piercingly, and often continuously. During a colic episode, babies may clench their fists and stiffen their stomach and legs. Some babies arch their backs, and others pull up their legs to their stomachs.. Most babies with typical crying behavior are soothed and will cry less when they are ...

When parents complain of infant colic, it seems likely that aspects of their babies crying behaviour are partly responsible for their disquiet. This study assessed whether distinct acoustic properties of colic cries might be a central source of parents concerns. Infants whose amount of crying met the criteria of Wessel and colleagues11 for colic and whose mothers recorded colic bouts in diaries were selected. The most intense 30 second segments from the selected colic bouts were compared with audibly intense segments of pre-feed cries of infants judged not to have colic. The question addressed by this comparison is whether colic cries contain distinct acoustic information that allows them to be distinguished from cries which, because they cease upon feeding, are usually referred to as hunger cries.. Two acoustic parameters, fundamental frequency (audible pitch) and dysphonation (audible harshness), have been the main focus in previous studies of infant pain, colic, crying, and cry ...
A randomized, controlled clinical trial on colic in Denmark that compared chiropractic adjustments to daily doses of dimethicone has concluded: Spinal manipulation has a positive short-term effect on infantile colic. 1. Infantile colic is a curious and mysterious condition. It is estimated that, on average, 22.5% of all newborns suffer from colic, defined as uncontrollable crying in babies from 0-3 months old, more than three hours a day, more than three days a week for three weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours. But only 47 percent of infantile colic cases have disappeared by the age of three months, a further 41 percent disappeared before six months of age, and the remaining 12 percent of cases persevered until between the ages of 6 and 12 months.. First described in 1894, colic has no verified cause(s). Countless studies have, however, determined what it is not caused by: air or constrictions in the intestines; gastrointestinal transit time; intestinal hormones; ...
Affective lability is a commonly described sequela of multiple neurologic disorders and brain injury. Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a type of affect lability characterized by sudden, involuntary, and distressing outbursts of laughing and/or crying that are often exaggerated or disconnected from mood state or social context [1-3]. PBA episodes tend to be stereotypical, can last from seconds to several minutes, and often occur multiple times per day. PBA is thought to occur as a result of injury or disease that disrupts pathways regulating emotional expression, or affect, including the corticobulbar tracts and basal ganglia [4, 5]. PBA is diagnosed clinically through a medical and neurologic evaluation and a careful assessment of symptoms in order to distinguish it from features of other psychiatric or neurobehavioral conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia-related agitation and other conditions that can occur separately or comorbidly with PBA in ...
Infant colic is a functional gastrointestinal disorders which affects up to the 30% of the infant population; it is primarily characterised by excessive inconsolable crying starting without any apparent cause and lasting for several hours per day.. Current non pharmacological interventions (e.g. message, restriction in maternal diet in breast-feeding infants) and pharmacological treatments (simethicone, antimuscarinic drugs) are largely unsatisfactory.. In animal models, Nepadutant reverse the exaggerated intestinal motility and sensitivity, induced by different stimuli, without producing inhibitory effects on these functions at baseline, suggesting that Nepadutant could have a therapeutic effect with no interference on physiological gastrointestinal transit.. This phase IIa study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of Nepadutant paediatric oral solution given once daily at two doses in comparison to placebo.. The experimental clinical phase encompasses the following periods:. ...

Background: Long term studies of cognitive development and colic have not differentiated between typical colic and prolonged crying.. Objective: To evaluate whether colic and excessive crying that persists beyond 3 months is associated with adverse cognitive development.. Design: Prospective cohort study. A sample of 561 women was enrolled in the second trimester of pregnancy. Colic and prolonged crying were based on crying behaviour assessed at 6 and 13 weeks. Childrens intelligence, motor abilities, and behaviour were measured at 5 years (n = 327). Known risk factors for cognitive impairment were ascertained prenatally, after birth, at 6 and 13 weeks, at 6, 9, and 13 months, and at 5 years of age.. Results: Children with prolonged crying (but not those with colic only) had an adjusted mean IQ that was 9 points lower than the control group. Their performance and verbal IQ scores were 9.2 and 6.7 points lower than the control group, respectively. The prolonged crying group also had ...

Despite using prospective methods, an objective case defnition, a population-based relatively large sample and multivariate techniques, our results failed to document any relationship between the source of early infant nutrition and colics development. Unlike other studies, potential etiologic agents including the source of infant nutrition and levels of maternal distress were assessed before the development of colic, allowing for the exploration of temporal relationships. Additionally, the study provides evidence that most cases of infant colicremit by 4 months with little lasting impact on the levels of maternal anxiety or depression Admittedly, because the participants in our study were, on average, well educated, our fndings may not generalize to populations that di﫿er in their socioeconomic background and/or access to health care. Nevertheless, the internal validity of our study is high because of the inclusive nature of the study population, the representative sample, and the high ...
Essential, but painful: needles are used for babies early childhood vaccinations and medical care during childhood illnesses. They cause distress for the babies and often also for their parents and caregivers, and can result in future anxiety and fear about needles. Researchers around Harrison et al. examined if breastfeeding reduces vaccination pain in babies aged 1 to 12 months. The results were published in the Cochrane Database for Systematic Review. In an intervention review in February 2016, the Canadian scientists searched the medical literature for studies of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effectiveness of breastfeeding babies beyond the neonatal period up to one year of life during the use of needles. They compared the effectiveness of breastfeeding in reducing pain (as scored by crying time and pain scores), to parental holding, skin- to-skin contact, babies lying flat, the giving of water or sweet solutions, placebo, other interventions, and to no intervention. Seriously, how have TEN whole months come and gone? Ten months of big life changes and learning how to adjust. Ten months of dirty diapers, bottle after bottle, spit ups, and meltdowns. (Some meltdowns by me included!) Ten months of doing one thing and then doing it again. Ten months of my life TIMES TWO! Ten months of smiles, laughs, giggles, and cuddles. Ten months of learning how to be a mommy, how to manage me time, and how to stay moving forward with confidence through all the chaos. And I wouldnt take any of it back for a second. Oh, who am I kidding, I would definitely take back the nights of very little sleep continually interrupted by one or two crying babies. I love sleep and sleep loves me. We have a very special relationship and would like to be reunited. (Please hear my plea, oh little twin babies! You are 10 months old and should be sleeping through the night without a peep ...

He warned that in some cases, however, men s presence in the home could increase women s domestic workload. Data from Brazil and Chile showed that, in a two-parent household, women did more work than in a single-parent household. Even when men carried out domestic chores, they gained little or no identity or social recognition for it. On the contrary, they were often shunned by their male peers. Public policies were needed to promote men s caregiving. Studies showed that fatherhood preparation courses and information campaigns focusing on men s roles in their children s lives often led men to change their behaviour towards women and children for the better. But such initiatives must be scaled up and embedded into public policies. Sometimes a little information could go a long way. Men could be taught to change nappies and soothe crying babies just as much as they could be to go to war and work as engineers. It was essential to look for ways to engage the workplace and employers to create more ...

One of the things I mentioned to President Bush and my blogging colleagues at last weeks meeting was that, while I and the gentlemen and woman sitting at that meeting come from countries where despotism rules and human rights are systematically violated and where oppression is the order of the day, I, personally, was different. Unlike my blogging colleagues here, Mr. President, I said, I was fortunate enough to have lived, and been raised in freedom. My father, just a year or two younger than I am now brought this crying baby boy, his sobbing sister and their worried and terrified mother to ths country so that we would know true liberty. Not an easy thing, for a man with a family, midway through his life to uproot that family and leave the only country and people hed ever known, and take that family to a country where everything is different. The mores, the culture, the language. To settle in a new country without any friends or family, with nothing but the proverbial shirts on their ...

Well, only four more weeks to go!!!!! Ive been counting in weeks rather than months of late as it sounded like less time (8 weeks as opposed to 2 months etc) but we have reached the point where 1 month sounds shorter than 4 weeks which to me means that we are really close now. Im so excited.. Almost too excited that Im worried that Baby Pregnantcitygirl will arrive and then all this excitement will slowly trickle away to leave a crying baby that will be a lot of sleepless nights and hard work. I say that very lightheartedly of course because I know that I will love this baby more than life itself, hell, our 12 year old cat has weed on 3 duvets in the last 2 weeks (stress-dont ask) and we have had no dryer (broken and replaced today - hooray, we have dry towels after 30 minutes) and yet I have forgiven her over and over again without even trying! Perhaps Im softer than I thought.. These last 2 weeks have brought NCT classes (2 full days, 1 evening,1 breastfeeding). I really didnt want to go ...

Where you sit will largely determine how your overall experience goes, so set an alarm if youre likely to forget about your early flight check-in, and pre-book your seat as soon as you get the chance.. As most airlines start booking from the front of the aircraft, its worth reserving a seat near the back of the plane if you want to avoid crying babies (who will be congregated near the middle) or sit near the galley, where you can get up easily and use the extra room to stretch your legs.. Window seats are great too, as theres nobody to climb over you mid-nap. You have a built-in corner to rest your weary head on, and you are well away from the drinks cart and other passengers milling about in the aisles.. ...
How colic has been diagnosed? What does research tell us? What soothing methods that have been shown to make a difference to your crying baby?
There are many arguments about infantile colic, whether it really exists, what causes it, what (if anything) should be used to treat it, and if it is a disease restricted to western society rather than infants of all economic and ethnic backgrounds. It is probably caused by a spontaneous spasm of the small intestine, but no reason for this spasm has ever been proved. Changes in diet and formula, different foods for the mother of breast fed infants, alterations to feeding times and positions, vitamin and naturopathic supplements, increases or decreases in the degree of attention paid to the child have all been tried to ease the problem. Some experts blame anxiety in the mother, particularly with a first child in a family without extended family support, for causing anxiety in the infant, and subsequent gut spasms. Mothers of babies who have suffered are in no doubt that it is a real entity ...
