yellow). (Song of Solomon 4:14) Saffron has front the earliest times been in high esteem as a perfume. It was used, says Rosenmuller, for the same purposes as the modern pot-pourri. The word saffron is derived from the Arabic zafran, yellow. (The saffron (Crocus sativus) is a kind of crocus of the iris family. It is used its a medicine, as a flavoring and as a yellow dye. Homer, Virgil and Milton refer to its beauty in the landscape. Crocus sativus, or saffron essential oil is known as one of the most expensive spices and has herbaceous warm, woodsy aroma. One of the earliest historical references mentioning saffron comes out of ancient Egypt where the stigmas were used in perfumes, as a drug, as hair and fabric dye, as well as culinary purposes.
To avoid ending on a gruesome note, here is one more good group of bee plants: Colchicum. Sometimes referred to as the autumn crocus, this name is a poor representation of the genus since there are autumn, winter, and spring blooming species in both Colchicum and Crocus. Colchicum, unlike Crocus, grows from a toxic structure that is like something between a bulb and a corm, quite unique, although typically considered to be a corm. Crocus on the other hand grows strictly from a corm and is not toxic, in fact it is practically edible and it is eaten by rodents, deer, turkeys, and slugs. Colchicum is virtually pest free, due to the toxins within the plant. Most of the commercially available colchicums are the autumn blooming types. These tend to flower in the fall, and send up leaves and seed pods in spring. Ive grown colchicums for three years, and honeybees seem to adore them. ...

You can always rely on neutrals.. While theres plenty of talk these days about the new neutrals - whereby you treat more pigmented shades with the same confidence as you would a neutral, taking them all over the room and even onto ceilings - there are still a collection of shades that are the originals, the real deal.. Classic neutrals that have a touch more depth to them than pure whites and yellow-based creams such as Driftwood and Silver Birch are a match made in heaven for Saffron. They help to pare it back but also play up to Saffrons rich, earthy side - its a colour that can be taken down a few different avenues.. If you go for this approach, try weaving in a few darker wood accents, ideally antiques or those pieces that are designed to look and feel like theyre from times gone by. Medium-toned woods work well too but its helpful to have some contrast and some texture. Our new Wycombe dining chairs and benches are just perfect at achieving both - a wholesome mid-tone oak and woven ...

These two photos are from separate sites. The first (left) is from a local pond which I didnt know existed until recently and, being an old fashioned pond, it has remained unimproved by farmers for decades and so has some very good pond flora in it.. The second photo (right) is from a site where first found the plant as a teenager and wondering what it was looked it up in a reference book. This may well have been the first flower I ever identified on my own. I visited this site because the Autumn crocus can usually be found nearby and I wanted to photograph it. (I didnt find any Crocuses but it might be too early).. So the Bidens cernua at this second site has been there to my knowledge since 1956.. Bidens cernua is a typical pondside plant often growing in shallow water or in mud at the edge. It is common in England and Ireland but much less so in Scotland and Wales. Its stronghold is the North West of England.. This plant is most common in the north west of England but is found throughout ...

When Mom visited in October, she helped me tear up the peonies, trim and restrain the hydrangea, and clear out all the weeds so we could see what sort of space we had, and it looks like Ive got a nice canvas to work with. There is a perennial border in place that I decided to leave there for now, but Im not sure what the plant is called. Thin grassy variegated leaves with a small spike of a purple flower popping up in the mid-to-late summer. Theyre low, small, and seem healthy, so they get to stay. Mom and I planted some bulbs - tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and grape hyacinths - so there will be something pretty to look at in the spring. Provided that the deer, squirrels, and bunnies dont eat them for lunch, that is. I went out today and found some little shoots sticking up, uneaten! Hooray! Some crocuses:. ...
Jim Waddick asked for inspiration. Im not sure I can offer inspiration, but I can offer some diversion. The transition from summer into fall this year has been one of the oddest Ive ever experienced. We went almost overnight from unseasonably (and long continued) heat, humidity and drought to cloudy, unseasonably cool, rainy days and nights. Early in the fall the leaf color was unremarkable, but now at the end of November maples and oaks are putting on a glorious show. By now weve had a killing freeze. The foliage in the top of the crepe myrtle tree was killed before it colored this year, but the live foliage within the canopy of the tree is slowly building up a bright glow. When the fall foliage of this tree is in full color, it reflects a soft, warm red light into the nearby rooms of the house. The freeze put an end to Tricyrtis in this neighborhood - most were caught in full bloom. The crocus season continues, but the timing seems odd this year. Crocus tournefortii has been in bloom for ...
We went all the way to the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas to try to escape the cold. It was the first time I ever had to wear a winter coat during the early morning hours. GEez. It just didnt seem right. If we had flown like we usually do we wouldlnt have had our winter coats with us. We usually leave them in the trunk of the car. Luckily we had them with us. I didnt wear shorts this time either. Only one afternoon was warm enough that I even thought I could. Weather is weird this late winter. I got my first chigger and tick of the year while there. Also an unusual happening. I love seeing your crocus and helebores. I have a few helebores and crocus ready to bloom. All they need is a little sunshine.. ReplyDelete ...
Many years ago, before we even started working at Cooks, KB was in Duluth. On his way home, he passed a tiny sign on the roadside saying, Black Currants and Raspberries to the right. The right happened to be a few turns and three or four miles into the countryside, but it certainly started with a right-hand turn!. Mike Åas had a small farm where he grew black currants and raspberries. At the end of every season, hed drive his semi over to Frankfort, Michigan, and swap some of his crop for black cherries and blueberries from a similar farm on the other side of the big lake. KB landed in heaven. Good thing he was driving the station wagon, because he bought one of everything!. Two of the many beauties of Mikes program: the quality of the fruit was off the charts, and you could purchase Mikes crops in bulk - 5- or 10-pound boxes. No measly pints or half pints here. There was enough to share or to preserve or to eat straight out of the box, until you just couldnt eat another bite!. With our ...

Wearing Jo Malone Tudor Rose and Amber, from a sample, which is both a JM and by Christine Nagel. As saffron is not listed as one of the notes, I am officially completely ignorant of what a rose/saffron scent actually smells like. Ill have to sniff some actual saffron and see if that helps. I wanted to wear Mauboussin, but was afraid itd be a little much for the allergists office. When the TR&A fades (which seemed to happen much sooner the first time I wore it-has anyone else noticed that when youre waiting for a short-lived perfume to fade so you can wear something else, it seems to last twice as long?), I plan to break out the Mauboussin. I can use the bonus points, having been very dilatory lately. This weekend I plan to finally read all the haikus and limericks from last weekend, having failed utterly to compose one of my own in a timely manner. III. Common Autumn Crocus grown from seeds formed in the third year after sowing a new bulbotuber part with many fasciculate and one stake-like roots and a single aboveground leaf. The stake-like root, developed from the bulbotuber has a histological structure of a primary root with stocking functions and has a probable role in the formation of the new bulbotuber. The bulbotuber is advancing downwards, to lower soil levels by a growing basal protuberance. IV. Question: When is the best time to plant tulip bulbs? Can I do it in the late fall, and what other bulbs can you plant in fall?. Answer: Bulbs which bloom early in the spring, including the tulips, are best planted in the fall. Here in New Mexico we recommend planting in October, but if it is not possible to plant by then, to plant by Christmas. So, plant from October until the soil freezes. The earlier planting is preferable because the bulbs produce roots in the warm soil in the fall before the ground freezes. When the air is getting quite cold, the soil retains considerable heat and allows this growth of roots. A good root system helps the bulbs to establish and produce a good floral display in the spring.. There are other bulb-forming plants which bloom in the fall These include daffodils, crocus, dutch iris, snowdrops, glory-of-the-snow, hyacinths, alliums (ornamental onions), and many others. Some of these produce corms which are bulb-like but not true bulbs. Never the less, they bloom in ...

16.03.2017. There are plans afoot to lay saffron plantations on more than 50 hectares in 23 districts of the country. The feedstock will be used in the pharmaceutical industry, and then ready products will be exported.. Nowadays, saffron is grown in more than a dozen nations, including Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Russia, China, India, Australia.. Scientists of the Bоtanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan conducted research on the feasibility of cultivation of this plant in our country. The results showed that the saffron fully corresponds to soil and climatic conditions of the republic, can be grown in the mountain and foothill areas of the Fergana Valley, Tashkent, Samarkand, Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya, Navoi and Jizzakh regions, and in inter-rows in vineyards and gardens.. In complementary medicine, saffron has long been used for treatment of many diseases. Abu Ali ibn Sino wrote that saffron tincture improves eye vision, the work of the heart and respiratory system.. We were in Boston over the weekend and I got back last night in time to take a good look around the changes in the garden wrought by a few more days of sunshine. The thing that most caught my attention (and sent me into the house for the camera) was this Chilean Blue Crocus. This was a new one for me. I had grown the Leichtlinii variant last year and was very much taken with the white face surrounded by sky blue edges, but I hadnt ever seen the standard Chilean Blue before. The blue is a very dark inky blue (I refuse to call it gentian blue so as not to arbitrarily favor the gentiana over the crocus genus) and its definitely an attention-grabber. This one came from Telos Rare Bulbs and they also had a violet-flavored version. With a little luck maybe that will flower this year as well.. Besides numerous Daffodils, Bloodroot, Daphne, and Pieris there were other flowers of the bluish persuasion coming into flower when I returned.. ...

Ah, yes-the million-dollar question. Can it be that the crocus of saffron, the seeds of a coriander plant, a vanilla bean and the drupes, or stone fruit, of a pepper plant all sit under the same umbrella term?Well, yes. Though the reason for that is a little fuzzy.. It is instructive that in his Book of Spice, John OConnell falls short of providing a single, clear definition of what spices are. He favours one by historian Jack Turner, in his Spice: The History of a Temptation. Namely: A spice is not a herb, understood to mean the aromatic, herbaceous, green parts of the plant. Herbs are leafy, whereas spices are obtained from the other parts of the plant: bark, root, flower bud, gums and resins, seed, fruit or stigma.. This highlights, helpfully, the difference between the very herbal fresh coriander and the very obviously spice-like seeds which derive from the same plant and are used across a variety of cuisines. But leaving the definition as not a herb seems unsatisfactory.. OConnell ...

Spring may seem like a long way off but in one regard its already here. That would be in the arrival of spring blooming bulbs at your local nursery. There are of course a large variety of tulips, crocus and daffodils but these are just the tip of the iceberg. Spring favorites include fragrant hyacinths, which come in an increasing variety of colors, including a yellow for 2012, sweet smelling freesias and all manner of irises. Dutch irises are always popular and they too are broadening their color spectrum beyond purples and yellows. One of my favorites is Bronze Beauty, which combines bronze and purple tones. Then there are the bearded irises, with larger and more colorful blooms. They can be a bit more finicky but the reward is great. Theres a reason there are bearded iris societies. I can also recommend some less common irises. Start with ensata (Japanese) irises, which feature enormous flowers. Siberian and Louisiana iris offer some fun patterns and are available as corms. Iris pseudacorus ...

This book really made me think about a few things other than the message of friendship. First, I was so curious about a flower growing in the snow...or being able to plant a flower and have it bloom in an arctic place where its sooooo snowy. I had to search the Internets for this because it really had me confused. I think the flower that grow in this book is either a crocus or an arctic poppy. I loved seeing all the images of bright yellow flowers blooming in the snow when I did my search. Yellow is my new favorite color and it looks so hopeful and sweet in the snow. I also had to look up if bees could live in snowy places. Im still trying to learn more about this but I did learn that there are arctic bees that would live in far north and snowy places. Finally, I was thinking about the science of planting and growing flowers in general. Maybe my brain was being a little bit hesitant to go along with the whimsicalness of of this story, but I really wanted to clarify if any of these things were ...

Kew is looking wonderful. I just wish I felt better able to go out and appreciate it. The weather has turned wet (AGAIN!!) so all the fall colours are rich and saturated in the wet. There are dainty lilac autumn crocuses everywhere, and tumbling clumps of the big double colchicum Waterlily to the side of the path where I walk through from the back of the office towards the Princess of Wales Conservatory. There are still real waterlilies in the Waterlily House (and its still hot in there, too!). The Rock Garden has little secretive clumps of cyclamen, and crinkly pink nerines, blooming here and there among the boulders. Its beautiful, it really is. A feast of colour and texture and rich sweet musky smells. And huge, huge puddles ...
Winter days of yore on the DRZ. As I walked the dog around the neighborhood under a winter blue sky, I felt an innate awareness that were getting closer to this snow cycle being over. That cheered me up a bit. Soon well start to see the crocuses and daffodils pop up. That is - once this mountain of standing snow we have everywhere melts. Its like the flippin tundra around here.. Some winters, I have been able to cheerfully shrug off the weather and just roll with the punches. I would take my motorcycle out and just bum around even if it was just for a few minutes. I would savor a quick blast around town to stretch my legs and get a rush.. This year? Havent even considered it.. Is this it? Am I getting old?. ...
Having graduated with a major in Computer Science and minors in Physics and Mathematics, I began my teaching career at Killarney Collegiate Institute in Killarney, Manitoba in 2009. While teaching Physics there, I decided to invest in PASCO products and approached the Killarney Foundation with a proposal about funding the Physics lab with the SPARK Science Learning System and sensors. While there I also started a tremendously successful new course that gave students the ability to explore their interests in science and consisted of students completing one project a month, two of which were to be hands-on experiments, two of which were to be research based, and the final being up to the student.. In 2011 I moved back to Brandon, Manitoba and started working at the school I had graduated from, Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. In 2018 I finally had the opportunity to once again teach Physics and have been working hard to build the program. Being in the vocational school for the region has ...

RE-ENVISION is an ongoing series of research memos produced by our associates at Appetite. We trace the cultural genealogies of food from around the world to challenge commonly held beliefs about origin and authenticity. The officially-named national dish of Morocco, tajine is a hearty warm stew served in its namesake, a conical pot in which it is cooked. The word tajine itself traces its etymological history to a Persian word meaning large pan.1 A typical tajine includes some kind of meat, usually lamb, with vegetables, onions (chopped or pureed), and lots of spices like saffron, cumin, coriander, ginger, red pepper, cinnamon, and ras el-hanout, a traditional Morroccan spice blend.2 Tajine is also traditionally served with khobz, a flatbread used as cutlery to scoop and eat the stew,3 and qadra, a yellow sauce made with saffron and a salted, clarified, and aged butter called smen.4 Nowadays, tajine is also frequently served with french fries.5. The use of these spices is a reflection of the ...
Unlike that day at the coffee counter, today I have time to share some details about Moroccan food. It shares particularities commonly known about Mediterranean food such as the freshness of the ingredients used and the simple, hearty flavors. Below are some examples of popular Moroccan specialties: Couscous is one of the most familiar Moroccan specialties, appreciated for its ease of preparation and versatility. It can be dressed up elegantly with fruits, nuts and spices, or presented lightly seasoned for everyday dinners.. Tagine comes second in popularity and refers to any kind of chicken, beef or lamb stew slow-cooked in a tagine, a round clay pot with a dome-shaped lid that yields delicious earthy flavors. Tagines are often seasoned with saffron, cumin, harissa and preserved lemons.. Brewats and bstilla are dainty creations made with bstilla or phyllo dough in the shape of triangles, cigars or pies filled with spiced kefta, saffron chicken, or lemony seafood. They are also made for ...
In a pestle and mortar, bash the garlic and ginger together with a good teaspoon of salt until you have a coarse paste. Transfer the paste to a bowl.. Replace the garlic and ginger with the spices, except the saffron, and bash these into a powder (you can, of course, do it all together, but youll need a pretty big pestle and mortar). Combine with the garlic and ginger in the bowl, then stir in the saffron, honey, almonds and yogurt.. Using a sharp knife, score the lamb with criss-crosses about 3cm deep. Rub the marinade into the lamb and place in a bowl or plastic bag and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 24 hours.. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Place the lamb in a large baking tin and cover loosely with foil, making sure that the foil doesnt touch the meat. Cook for 2 hours, removing the foil and adding a splash of water to the pan for the final 20 minutes.. Leave the lamb to rest while you prepare the salad.. Heat a good splash of oil in a frying pan and fry the cauliflower ...
Saffron, rosewater, and pistachios combine in a fragrant Nowruz treat. Bastani-e nooni is a feast for the senses. The gorgeous yellow hue of saffron ice cream. The aroma of rosewater. The smooth texture of the cool, creamy treat countering the crispy wafers and crunchy sprinkling of pistachios. Iran has made many lasting contributions to the world of frozen desserts, from the universally beloved sherbet (sharbat) to the noodle-accented treat known as faloodeh to ancient ice-storing towers. But the Persian ice cream sandwich is a particularly alluring blend of aroma, beauty, and flavor. Availab
Biryani is a celebration of aroma, color, and flavor, with perfectly cooked, fluffy grains of scented basmati rice and tender chunks of spiced lamb.
So says Marc Jacobs, who has released a new feminine fragrance called Decadence for fall. Decadence was developed by perfumer Annie Buzantian and is a sensual, luxurious, woody fragrance with top notes of plum, iris flower and saffron; heart notes of Bulgarian rose, jasmine sambac and orris; and a base of vetiver, papyrus woods and liquid amber.. When I spritzed Decadence on a blotter at my local Macys and took a deep whiff, I gasped and recoiled (to the amusement of the security guard keeping an eye on things). It opens with something sharp and harsh that I can only describe as knitting needle up the nostril. It is some kind of aldehyde? I do not know. Despite this experience, I requested a sample of Decadence at the nearby Sephora and tested it for a few days. Fortunately, that piercing introduction - like the feedback shriek from a microphone when someone first steps up to it - fades out after a few minutes on skin. The saffron and plum top notes become noticeable. The jasmine and other ...

Ive never been big into frozen meals, not before my gluten intolerance nor now. But when I was offered to try out a new natural frozen food line I didnt hesitate; the packaging alone caught my eye! I was intrigued, and hopeful, that I would finally find a frozen meal I would like; one that was not too salty or high in calories that I could heat up quickly when I didnt feel like cooking.. Saffron Road offers gourmet world cuisine - Turkish, Thai, Indian, Moroccan, Manchurian and good old chicken tenders, nuggets and bites. Saffron Road prides itself on all natural, vegetarian fed meat raised without antibiotics. Why is this important? I was curious of that myself. So after spending about 15 minutes googling this, Ive learned that vegetarian fed meat contains less total fat and has higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (the good fats). I also learned that 80% of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used for animals, not humans. This is disturbing, considering how many people could benefit from ...
I enjoy preparing from scratch home cooked meals for my family, but on especially busy weeknights I sometimes use a few prepared foods to help speed up the process. One of the main things any good cook knows is what a difference a pinch of this or that can make to the overall flavor of a dish. The kinds of spices there are is nearly limitless, especially if youre willing to drop some serious cash on things like saffron and cardamom.. However, the vast majority of dishes can benefit from a few affordable key spices:. ...

Not to simplify some of the worlds great and highly-nuanced cuisines, but much of their flavors can be accomplished at home by just stocking your pantry with a few of the essential ingredients. Shopping sucked as it always did. I had to buy specialty items that I normally dont because they last so long. For example: Ground Cardamom was effin $10 for a flipping McCormick spice bottle size. WHAT?!? Its not like Im buying lark-tongues or saffron. Diapers were upmarked this week, and that bummed me out, so Im going to have to shop around to get Zbers butt-covers at a decent price. 2. Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large, heavy casserole or (preferably) an earthenware pot set over a flame tamer. Add the onions and cook, stirring often, until tender, about five minutes. Add the garlic, and stir for about half a minute until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, spice mix, turmeric, saffron and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer, and simmer until the tomatoes have cooked down slightly and smell fragrant, about 10 minutes. Add the dissolved tomato paste, and bring to a simmer ...
The back embossed piece is from the same Embossing Folder. Where the flowers cover, is where they are cut out from. You dont have to cut them out if you dont want to.. As I was using Calypso Coral for the small flowers, I decided that the centre of my larger flowers should be the same.. Using a Sponge Dauber, the colour was added. I then used So Saffron to add the outer colour. The colouring really makes them pop.. I then arranged the leaves, cut using the coordinating Bloom Dies, and stuck those down, before adding the large flowers with Dimensionals.. A sentiment from the coordinating Art in Bloom Stamp Set, inked using a Stampin Write Marker to select only a small section of the wording is then added.. ...
