Groundwater in Eastern Croatia contains elevated concentrations of inorganic arsenic. The biggest well field in the area has an average arsenic concentration of 200 μg/L and it supplies the population of around 200,000 people with drinking water. Croatian Regulation has adopted guidelines from the European Council Directive for the maximum concentration limit (MCL) of 10 μg/L of As in drinking water. However, it has been estimated that almost 120,000 people drink water from that well field with a concentration of arsenic over 10 μg/L. To reduce the health risks associated with arseniccontaminated water intake in Eastern Croatia it is important to develop proper strategies that will use one of the following technologies for arsenic removal: oxidation, coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, ion exchange or membrane technologies ...

Pannonian Croatia requested help from Tomislav Duke of Dalmatian Croatia against the Hungarians whom he defeated, established a lasting border along the Drava River in the early 900s, and annexed what remained of Pannonian Croatia[54]. In 923, Byzantium negotiated an alliance with Tomislav against Bulgaria, and awarded him the honorary title of proconsul. This provoked Symeon I Tsar of Bulgaria into attacking Croatia, but Tomislav defeated him in [926][55]. LNG Croatia, the state-owned company that is developing the countrys first liquefied natural gas facility on the island of Krk, has once again pushed back the second round of bidding for the capacity at the terminal.. The company said the deadline has been prolonged from September 28, 2018, to December 20, 2018.. Since LNG Croatia has received additional requests from interested terminal users to extend the submission deadline, LNG Croatia in cooperation with Plinacro and FGSZ aligned a new time schedule for the Open Season procedure, the companys statement reads.. LNG Croatia recently revised its the technical characteristics and capacities of the initially requested FSRU to reduce the initially planned capital costs of the project.. The project will still be developed in two phases, with the first phase including a development of the FSRU while the second phase entails the construction of a land-based LNG import facility, according to LNG Croatia.. The European Union has put the LNG terminal ...
The highlight of Croatias recent infrastructure developments is its rapidly developed motorway network, largely built in the late 1990s and especially in the 2000s (decade). By September 2011, Croatia had completed more than 1,100 kilometres (680 miles) of motorways, connecting Zagreb to most other regions and following various European routes and four Pan-European corridors.[177][178][179] The busiest motorways are the A1, connecting Zagreb to Split and the A3, passing east-west through northwest Croatia and Slavonia.[180]. A widespread network of state roads in Croatia acts as motorway feeder roads while connecting all major settlements in the country. The high quality and safety levels of the Croatian motorway network were tested and confirmed by several EuroTAP and EuroTest programs.[181][182]. Croatia has an extensive rail network spanning 2,722 kilometres (1,691 miles), including 984 kilometres (611 miles) of electrified railways and 254 kilometres (158 miles) of double track ...
Searching for records in Croatia has been limited by the lack of activity for this area. There are Croatian genealogy websites that can be found via feefhs.org and www.rootsweb.com. The Mormon Family History Library (FHL) began microfilming records in Zagreb in March 1985. They have acquired over 2,500 microfilms in Croatia, including Jewish records for 15 towns. These films are listed in Avotaynu (Summer 1999, Vol. XV, no. 2, page 5), as well as in the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC). A good article on Croatian Research at the Family History Library by Thomas K. Edlund can be found on the Feefhs.org web site. An updated and expanded version of this article, entitled A Beginners Guide to Croatian Research, by Thomas K. Edlund, can be found in the FEEFHS Quarterly, VII:1-2 (Spring/Summer 1999), pp. 7-37. Croatia has a Central State Archive, located in the capital, Zagreb. The Hrvatski Državni Arhiv (National Archives of Croatia) is the main depository of old church records for many ...

Comparison between patients and controls did not show any significant differences. Analysis of distribution of DRB1 alleles revealed that DRB1*01 allele was the most present allele among B*27 positive individuals (21.5% in AS group and 23.4% in control group). DRB1*0301 allele was significantly more frequent in patients than in controls (9.6% vs. 1.6%; p = 0.03), while lower frequency of DRB1*0701 allele among patients is marginally significant (1.9% vs 7.8%; p = 0.055). Furthermore, the linkage disequilibrium between observed between second most frequent allele (DRB1*16) and B*27 has to be noted as characteristic for our population. ...

The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the close of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands, along with a majority of Croatias ethnic Serb population. Under UN supervision, the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998. The country joined NATO in April 2009 and the EU in July 2013 ...

Pollen of anemophilous plants prevailed at all monitoring sites while pollen of entomophilous taxa occurred sporadically or in very low amounts. A similar pattern was reported in southeast Poland, however, with a different floral composition due to climatic differences. In Poland, pollen of the allergenic alder tree (Alnus sp.) accounts for most of the pollen count while in central Croatia the most allergenic weed, ragweed (Ambrosia sp.) does (Kasprzyk, 1999). Monthly pollen concentrations showed two peaks, in April and August, at all three sampling sites. These peaks coincided with the flowering of generally anemophilous tree and weed, especially ragweed. Similar results have also been reported from central Italy and south France (Clot, 2001; Emberlin et al., 1993; Spieksma and Frenguelli, 1991; J ger et al., 1991). Between-site differences were observed: monthly pollen concentrations measured in April at the Zagreb and Samobor sampling sites exceeded those recorded at the Ivani c Grad sampling ...

epin, Croatia revealed the presence of a large number of perimortem injuries distributed among males, females, and subadults. Archaeological and historical data suggest these individuals were victims of a raid carried out by Turkish akinji light cavalry in 1441. Comparisons with the frequencies of perimortem trauma in 12 other, temporally congruent skeletal series from the Balkans (n = 2,123 skeletons) support this assumption. The role of the akinji in the Ottoman army was twofold: to supply war captives, and to terrorize and disperse local populations before the advance of regular troops. This article tests the hypothesis that the purpose of the 1441 raid was the latter. To accomplish this, perimortem trauma in the series were analyzed by sex, age, location, and depth of the injury. A total of 82 perimortem injuries were recorded in 12 males, 7 females, and 3 subadults. The demographic profile of the victims suggests that young adults were specifically targeted in the attack. Significant sex ...

Wood sector is a strategic development sector of VSC and is based on valuable local raw wood material of Slavonian oak from the largest oak forest in Europe - Spačva basin. Research of the development potential of the wood sector showed that only 38% of locally available raw wood material is used by local wood processing industry, exploiting only one-third of its processing ...
Mycoses of wood of fig (Ficus carica L.) are plant diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi. To date in Croatia diseases of wood of figs have not been investigated, while worldwide, researches on this topic are overall relatively rare. Among fungi which are wood pathogens of figs, the most important ones are considered those from the family Diaporthaceae, but lately fungi from the family Botryosphaeriaceae are gaining importance as new pathogens of figs. In order to determine their presence and identify fungi from families Diaporthaceae and Botryosphaeriaceae on fig trees in Croatia, during the 2014 and 2015 samples of diseased wood of figs were collected from several locations in Dalmatia. From the samples, isolates of fungi were obtained in pure cultures, and those who have to phenotypic characteristics typical to the families Diaporthaceae or Botryosphaeriaceae were separated from other isolates and subjected to molecular analysis. The analysis included isolation of genomic DNA followed by ...
The British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) is proud to be working with Oxford Biotech company GlycanAge®, Kings College London and Croatian National Centre of Excellence in Personalised Healthcare in the Effects of Lifestyle Interventions on Changes in Biological Age research study.. GlycanAge® is a pioneering new blood test, developed by an international team of scientific researchers who have published over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of glycobiology and ageing in the last 20 years. A simple blood draw is needed to provide the sample that is analysed for the individuals levels of glycans. Glycans are minute sugar molecules that attach to proteins molecules within the immune system, forming individual patterns. These patterns change as we age, often affected by our genes and lifestyle, including nutrition, obesity, smoking, exercise and stress. This new research project aims to enable people to test their real biological age and ...

p]Dear friends, colleagues, supporters,[/p][p]Thank you so much for visiting my page![/p][p]This June Ill be taking on my biggest personal physical challenge yet, joining 60 other enthusiastic riders, cycling over 530km from Zagreb to Split in aid of The Felix Project. We aim to raise over £400k through this event.[/p][p]The Felix Project was founded by the Chairman of The Evening Standard, Justin Byam Shaw, in memory of his son, Felix, who died suddenly at a young age from Meningitis in 2014. Felix was full of compassion for those who didnt have the same advantages as him in life. Justin clearly remembers an incident at a boys football tournament, when Felix had been very upset to discover that almost none of the opposing team of 10-year-old boys from South London had anything to eat that day. To commemorate Felix and his huge compassionate heart, The Felix Project each week collects over 30 tons of high-quality surplus food from suppliers and distributes it to over 250 charities and ...
This thesis describes a hybrid zone between two taxa of toads, Bombina bombina and Bombina variegata in north eastern Croatia. The two taxa can be distinguished at four diagnostic enzyme loci. Clines at these loci are highly concordant; there is strong disequilibrium and substantial heterozygote. Both linkage disequilibrium and heterozygote deficit are asymmetric, being greater on the bombina side than on the variegata side. Different habitats are identified across the zone and a strong association with the genotype of the populations sampled from them, is found. This relationship is consistent across the hybrid zone. The cline is best described by a model which incorporates both a difference in gene frequency between habitats and a width which varies from place to place. Mark recapture studies show extensive movement, which implies that the association between habitat and genotype is due to a habitat preference. Translocation experiments suggest that there is adaptation to the habitats. A ...
