Leaves alternate, opposite or verticillate, usually simple, sometimes compound, exstipulate, often thick and fleshy, sometimes forming a basal rosette. Flowers actinomorphic, (3-)4-5(-32)-merous, usually bisexual, in axillary or terminal cymes, often grouped in corymb- or panicle-like inflorescences, less often in racemes or spike or solitary in the leaf axil. Sepals free or united. Petals free or united, sometimes forming a tubular corolla. Stamens as many or twice as many as the petals, filaments free or more or less adnate to the corolla; anthers 2-celled, usually basifixed, introrse, dehiscing longitudinally. Carpels superior or semi-inferior, equal in number to the petals, free or united at the base. Nectar scales usually present, small, applied to the base of the outer face of the carpels. Fruit a follicle. Seeds few-numerous, very small with smooth, rugose or tuberculate tegument ...
This perspective paper explores the utilization of abiotic stress-responsive transcription factors (TFs) from crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants to improve abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants. CAM is a specialized type of photosynthetic adaptation that enhances water-use efficiency (WUE) by shifting CO2 uptake to all or part of the nighttime when evaporative water losses are minimal. Recent studies have shown that TF-based genetic engineering could be a useful approach for improving plant abiotic stress tolerance because of the role of TFs as master regulators of clusters of stress-responsive genes. Here, we explore the use of abiotic stress-responsive TFs from CAM plants to improve abiotic stress tolerance and WUE in crops by controlling the expression of gene cohorts that mediate drought-responsive adaptations. Recent research has revealed several TF families including AP2/ERF, MYB, WRKY, NAC, NF-Y, and bZIP that might regulate water-deficit stress responses and CAM in the inducible ...

Seeds: Extremely small, weighting bout 0,01 mg. These small seeds (also known as dust diaspores) can be blown about like dust particles without any special devices for buoyancy. In this species, enormous numbers of seeds are produced at the cost of fewer, larger sized seeds . Because this plant occur abundantly in the arid areas and has specific habitat requirements, the production of increased numbers of seeds is essential to enhance the probability that at least some seeds will reach a favourable germination site. Except for their small size, these diaspores generally lack other appendages to further promote dispersal by wind. Several genera of the Crassulaceae, e.g. Crassula, Tylecodon and Cotyledon, occouring in the arid areas of southern Africa have very tiny dust-like seeds. The production of numerous dust-like seeds by desert species serves as an escape strategy to prevent mass consumption of seeds. These tiny seeds are carried by the wind to cracks and furrows in the soil and are then ...

The genus Crassula is comprised of hundreds of species and garden cultivars. Most varieties that we see circulating around nurseries are endemic to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. They range from diminutive dwarf plants that barely surpass an inch in height like Crassula susannae, to larger shrubs, like the familiar jade plant, Crassula ovata. ...

Introduction. Poisoning of livestock by cardiac glycoside-containing plants has the greatest economic impact of all plant-associated poisonings in the Republic of South Africa. Collectively, they are held responsible for 33% of all mortalities from plant poisonings of cattle and 10% of those in small stock (Kellerman, Naudé & Fourie 1996).. Chemically, two major groups of cardiac glycosides, namely the cardenolides and bufadienolides, are recognised (Steyn & Van Heerden 1998). Poisoning of livestock by bufadienolide-containing plants, which surpasses cardenolide-induced poisonings in importance, may either be acute or chronic. Tulp poisoning (induced by various Moraea species) and slangkop poisoning (caused by various Drimia species) induce only acute intoxication, as these species contain non-cumulative bufadienolides (Kellerman et al. 2005). On the other hand, members of three genera of the Crassulaceae (Cotyledon, Tylecodon and Kalanchoe), generally referred to as plakkies, may cause either ...
The neocon choice for chief teleprompter reader, Mitt Romney, has opted out of "talking" with Iran, Mr. Berger reminds us. He embraced the neocon cause. "President Romney would have us on the precipice of war - sooner rather than later," writes Berger for Foreign Policy, the globalist magazine started by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "Romney agrees with Netanyahu - the time for talking is over. Negotiations have failed. We need to get tougher on Iran." However, if Obama takes the November dog and pony show, war will come anyway. "And if war becomes our only choice, the world will see that we truly have exhausted all other avenues, that it is the last alternative and that we do not take lightly the prospect of introducing another American-led bombing campaign into a Middle East already in turmoil," Berger writes. Martin Indyk has said as much. "Im afraid that 2013 is going to be a year in which were going to have a military confrontation with Iran," he told CBS over the ...
In addition with its adaptation of reducing the water loss, having succulent water-storing stems, leaves and swollen roots that give it the ability to survive droughts, Crassula ovata can also survive being grazed, trodden on or knocked over, as it is able to root from any piece of stem or even from a single leaf.. Description: Crassula ovata is a large well-branched, compact, rounded, evergreen shrub 1-3m (3-10 feet) tall with glossy, dark grey-green, oval, succulent leaves and rounded heads of pink flowers in winter-spring. The stem is stout and gnarled and gives the impression of great age and its branches are also short and stubby, but well-proportioned. Branches are succulent, grey-green in colour and in older specimens the bark peels in horizontal brownish strips. Trunks to 15cm (6 inch) in diameter can develop on older plants.. The leaves are 3-9cm (1-3.5 inch) long and 2-4cm (0.8-1.5 inch) wide, egg-shaped to elliptic, often with a red margin and a somewhat pointed end. They are in ...

The definition of a succulent is: a plant adapted to arid conditions and characterized by fleshy water-storing tissues that act as water reservoirs. Succulents are plants with thick, fleshy leaves, as well as cacti.. Succulents are grown for their unique, interesting shapes, stunning flowers and resilience.. Give these plants a sunny window with direct sunlight, the appropriate amount of moisture, some fertilizer and they will grow.. The most important thing to remember when caring for cacti or succulents is that many varieties have a long dormancy period from October to March. During dormancy, it is sufficient to water every six to eight weeks. Watering more often will leave the soil wet, which can cause the plant to rot.. Come March, inside succulents begin to break their long dormancy and again require regular water and fertilizer. At this time of year, the plants are still growing slowly so one application of water and fertilizer once a month is usually sufficient.. Once new growth begins to ...
