Afr. j. child health [online]. 2013, vol.7, n.2, pp.50-53. ISSN 1999-7671.. BACKGROUND: Several factors, including gestational age (GA), gender, race and geographical/regional area, contribute to variations in the size of the anterior fontanelle (AF). While the impact of GA and gender are clearly established, the influences of region and ethnicity vary in the published literature. OBJECTIVES: To assess AF sizes in normal newborn Igbo babies in south-eastern Nigeria, establish baseline values for our population, and evaluate the relationship of our findings to some factors reported to affect AF size. METHODS: AF size was measured in 269 healthy term newborn babies using the method proposed by Popich and Smith and modified by Faix. Measurements were taken 24 - 48 hours after birth. RESULTS: The mean AF size was 2.97 cm (± standard deviation (SD) ...

OBJECTIVE: Cranial sutures and fontanelles can be reliably demonstrated using three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound with rendering. Our objective was to assess the repeatability and validity of fontanelle surface area measurement on rendered 3D images. METHODS: This was an in-vitro phantom validation study. Four holes, representing fontanelles, were cut on a flat vinyl tile. The phantom was scanned in a test-tank by two sonographers, at four different depths and using two different 3D sweep directions. The surface areas were measured on scan images and also directly from the phantom for comparison. Coefficients of variation (CVs), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Bland-Altman plots were used for repeatability analysis. Validity was expressed as the percentage difference of the measured area from the true surface area. RESULTS: Validity of measurement was satisfactory with a mean percentage difference of - 5.9% (median = - 3.5%). The 95% limits of agreement were - 23.9 to 12.1%, suggesting that
The skull is made up of many bones, 8 in the skull itself and 14 in the face area. They join together to form a solid, bony cavity that protects and supports the brain. The areas where the bones join together are called the sutures.. The bones are not joined together firmly at birth. This allows the head to change shape to help it pass through the birth canal. The sutures get minerals added to them over time and harden, firmly joining the skull bones together.. In an infant, the space where two sutures join forms a membrane-covered "soft spot" called a fontanelle (fontanel). The fontanelles allow for growth of the brain and skull during an infants first year.. There are normally several fontanelles on a newborns skull. They are located mainly at the top, back, and sides of the head. Like the sutures, fontanelles harden over time and become closed, solid bony areas.. ...

The word fontanel comes from the French fontaine for fountain. The medical term fontanel is a "soft spot" of the skull. The "soft spot" is soft precisely because the cartilage there has not yet hardened into bone between the skull bones. There are normally two fontanels, both in the midline of the skull, one (the anterior fontanel) well in front of the other (the posterior fontanel). ...

A newborns shoulders and hips are narrow, the abdomen protrudes slightly, and the arms and legs are relatively short. The average birth weight of a full-term newborn is approximately 7 ½ lbs.(3.2 kg), but is typically in the range of 5.5-10 pounds (2.7-4.6 kg). The average total body length is 14-20 inches (35.6-50.8 cm), although premature newborns may be much smaller. The Apgar score is a measure of a newborns transition from the uterus during the first minutes of life. A newborns head is very large in proportion to the rest of the body, and the cranium is enormous relative to his or her face. While the adult human skull is about 1/8 of the total body length, the newborns is about 1/4. At birth, many regions of the newborns skull have not yet been converted to bone, leaving "soft spots" known as fontanels. The two largest are the diamond-shaped anterior fontanel, located at the top front portion of the head, and the smaller triangular-shaped posterior fontanel, which lies at the back of ...
Fontanelles are the "soft spots" on an infants head where the bony plates that make up the skull have not yet come together. It is normal for infants to have these "soft spots", which can be seen and felt on the top and back of the head. Fontanelles that are abnormally large may indicate a medical condition ...
The average head circumference at birth is 33-35 cm and increases about 2 cm per month. Head circumference should be measured at each visit and plotted on a growth chart. Although head size often follows body growth, small infants may have large heads and vice versa. It is not unusual for the head circumference to cross percentiles during the first year of life, but if the infant has a large head, other family members heads should be measured and plotted and a full developmental assessment and examination should be performed. Large heads are often a familial feature. The posterior fontanel usually closes at 6-8 weeks of life and the anterior fontanel between 12-18 months.. ...
Reactivity of lime (CaO, CaO-MgO) is a function of surface area and pore space which is related to temperature or time of calcination or both. The development and distribution of pore space in calcined stone is poorly understood. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) now allows observation of porosity differences in the oxides calcined from the same stone at various temperatures and times.. The oxides formed from five limestones calcined in commercial kilns (four calcitic and one dolomitic) and one dolomitic stone calcined in a laboratory furnace were examined with the SEM, and their surface areas were determined by the Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) method using Krypton gas.. One of the stones was subjected to several different kiln conditions. The SEM made it possible to record the changes of the low-porosity quarry stone to a very porous oxide as it was calcined. However, with increased kiln time, the resulting CaO crystals coalesce, increasing pore space, and, with continued ...
An automated method measuring cardiac myocyte surface area was described and used as an index of cell growth. Hearts from 2 to 4 day old rats were digested through incubation in cold trypsin solution. Cells were cultured in M199 supplemented with 1% serum, 10% serum, or 10% serum plus 10(-7) molar norepinephrine. One to 4 days after plating, cells were fixed and stained for image analysis and morp

Longtime ELLE France editor Sophie Fontanel decided to give up sex--for nine years. Here, an excerpt from her forthright memoir, which quickly became a cultural sensation.
Proportionate growth retardation (prenatal and postnatal) associated with delayed bone age is the most common feature. Medullary stenosis of the long bones is common, and delayed closure of the anterior fontanelle occurs in 90% (fontanelle may remain open into teenage years). Sixty percent of patients have convulsions and tetany. Fatal outcome of these convulsions has been reported. Ophthalmic abnormalities are common: most frequently microphthalmia and hyperopia, as well as strabismus, congenital glaucoma, and pseudopapilledema. Intelligence usually is normal, but psychomotor delay may be present. ...
These patients typically die within the first year of life (the mean age at death is approximately 3 months). The clinical findings can be quite variable, ie, not all the following findings will be present in any one patient. Neurologic signs may include severe muscular hypotonia and psychomotor retardation, absent tendon, abdominal, startle and withdrawal reflexes, agenesis of the corpus callosum, absent olfactory bulbs with partial arhinencephaly, and failure to thrive secondary to hypotonia with sucking and swallowing difficulties. The head has been described as "light-bulb"-shaped, referring to the high forehead with brachycephaly and persistence of the metopic suture. Closure of the anterior and posterior fontanelles may be delayed. Facial dysmorphic signs may consist of hypertelorism with hypoplastic supraorbital ridges, congenital glaucoma with corneal clouding, nystagmus, cataract, low-set, dysplastic and posteriorly rotated ears, short "saddle" nose, micrognathia, and high arched ...

Particle characterization of activated carbon often includes size, shape, and surface area measurements. Dynamic image analysis has proven useful for the size and shape analysis of many forms and grades of activated carbon and has successfully replaced older techniques such as sieving at factory plants around the world.
Nutraceuticals require many of the same controls and monitors as pharmaceutical products. Particle size analysis, zeta potential stability analysis, and surface area measurement can be used to optimize nutraceutical product and process performance.
Tissue engineered scaffolds were constructed to mimic the native extracellular matrix (ECM) and promote cell migration of keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Electrospinning technology was used to fabricate these nano-scale matrices that consist of varying compositions and fiber diameters. The purpose of this study was to examine how average fiber diameter and scaffold composition regulate cell migration. Odyssey infrared scanning evaluated this on a macroscopic level, whereas confocal microscopy focused on a more microscopic approach. The expression of proteases released into the culture media was also examined. The results from this study suggest that fiber diameter increases as a function of electrospinning starting concentration. Altering the composition by adding a basement membrane-like material, Matrigel, does not statistically affect the average fiber diameter. Fibroblast migration is greater on collagen scaffolds than gelatin scaffolds based on surface area measurements. Confocal images
Happy Spring! Isnt the weather amazing? It has been so awesome to be able to have the windows open, enjoy the fresh air, and get outside a little bit. Mostly we dont venture farther than the driveway, or the lake to feed the fish with Addie, but today we made the trek to Main Campus again to see Meghans neurosurgeon. Her fontanelles have become sunken- a good thing in Meghans case- but the sutures in her skull have started to override, which is not so good. Since babies are born with bones in the skull that arent fused yet, if they override they are at risk for fusing too early. So, we made an adjustment on her shunt setting again (slowing down the drainage) and we return in 2 weeks to see how things are progressing. In the meantime we watch her fontanelles, her head circumference, and how shes acting to make sure things are going well. Dr. R. says her case is a little tricky since she has hydrocephalus, but she also has colpocephaly (an abnormal formation of the brain tissue) which she ...
Most babies do not show any outward sign that an IVH has occurred and it is identified during routine screening using ultrasound which is carried out at the cotside, through the soft spot on their head (where the bones havent fused together yet) called the fontanelle. Other ways of imaging the body (such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI) are sometimes recommended but they are only used in specialist centres when the babys condition is stable. With more severe grades of IVH, signs and symptoms may sometimes be seen. Where flow of CSF is blocked, as the ventricles enlarge, swelling of fontanelle may be noticeable. Other symtoms can also include abnormally low blood pressure and heart rate, seizures, anaemia, apnoea, decreased muscle tone and reflexes. Other tests may be helpful in determining the effects of IVH such as EEG, video recording of the babys movements and tests of visual function ...

Background: Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in causing coronary heart disease, stroke and other vascular complications. Adverse association of cardiovascular risk factors in children and young adults with a parental history of the disease is well recognized. Body mass and obesity relate strongly with the development of higher percentiles of blood pressure (BP). Objective: The present study is aimed to find out any observed differences in the BP, Body mass index (BMI) and Waist-hip ratio in young adults of hypertensive parents. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was done on 100 Ist year students of a college. After getting the Institutional Ethical Committee clearance and informed consent from all the participants, BP, BMI and Waist-hip ratio in the apparently healthy children of hypertensive and normotensive parents were measured and compared. Ohhhh I almost became a pharmacist Nataly! I worked in a retail pharmacy in MA for a while, then in the pharmacy in Childrens Hospital in Boston. I LOVED that job so very much! I was accepted to the MA College Of Pharmacy and was supposed to start school that Sept. (1993), but in August I blew a disk in my back. Thanks to a bunch of errors from two doctors (my then PCP and the orthopedist he sent me to..such as not ordering any tests until I literally couldnt move my left leg at all and had lost bladder control) the herniation became a rupture, embedding pieces of the disk in my sciatic nerve root at L4-5, then the disk herniated again, hiding the rupture from the MRI. It was found during surgery to shave off the bulge (Laminectomy). I also had pelvic pain back then, but they were saying it was radiating from my lower back but now my doctors think it was my SI joints since they were not in great shape then either after delivering my daughter at just under 10 pounds with only 1 fontanel that ...
15 day old boy, 3180 gram born with sacral mengingocele, s/p repair. Two days ago, had a shunt placed from brain to belly to drain excess fluid. It was enough to make me want to take my folic acid right that second, even I never plan to get pregnant again. It wasnt until the end of the shift that I realized that his face really was all scrunched forward like that, it wasnt just because he was laying on his belly with his head turned to the right for the whole shift. Seven seconds into the shift, the nurse tells me to feel his head, and his fontanels. Id call those full, but not bulging, she says. And here, these sutures, open wide is what Id document for them. And when I say sutures, I mean the places where the bones of the skull should meet and knit together. I felt like I was touching his brain through his skin. He had never exhibited ...

Seven years in the making and already described as the "Chinese Democracy" of UK noise rock, the self-titled debut album from Drunk in Hell has finally become reality! Sonically and socially, this record is an offence and an affront. It is an attack. A mauling. A kick in the egg sac just when youd recovered from a previous rupture and thought you were safe.
