Mr. Sloth lists four reasons why Costa Rica is considered to be so happy: 5 percent of the worlds biodiversity, two oceans, friendly locals, and talking sloths. The second video features Mr. Sloth as he visits Arenal Volcano in north-central Costa Rica, Playa Negra in the northwestern Guanacaste province, the National Theatre in San José, and Monteverde in the north-central region, where he falls asleep hanging upside down at the end of the video. Andrew Jones, executive vice president and group leader of the ICT account for 22squared, told the The Tico Times this week that the talking sloth was used to differentiate the new campaign from the common template of tourism advertising for Costa Rica, which typically consists of flora, fauna and beaches. There has not been much innovation in tourism advertising recently, and it was clearly time for a change, Jones said in a phone interview. We looked at a slide with many of our competitors print ads on it and saw that they all blended into one ...
In this study 2,089 fecal samples from patients with gastroenteritis were analyzed from different hospitals in Panama, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic during the period comprised between December 2002 and July 2003. One hundred samples per country from the positives to the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to determine the G and P genotypes: in Panama, Costa Rica, and Dominican Republic the combinations G and P have a great diversity and unusual genotypes. These results highlight an unexpected diversity among rotavirus strains in these countries and emphasize the need for further serologic and genetic surveys on more rotavirus strains in Central America and the Caribbean. In this context, the next generation of rotavirus vaccines will need to provide adequate protection against diseases caused by unusual genotypes. These results represent the second report of rotavirus genotypes in Costa Rica and first-time
With 90.6 percent of votes recorded at press time, Carlos Alvarado has won the presidency of Costa Rica with 60.7 percent of the vote, over 39.3 percent for Fabricio Alvarado.. The unexpected landslide marks a historic moment for Costa Rica, which has seen itself unusually divided in recent months over marriage equality, an issue on which the two candidates had opposing views and that took center stage following the Inter-American Human Rights Courts ruling in early January that its member countries, including Costa Rica, must provide equal rights for same-sex couples.. Many of the latest polls showed the candidates in a statistical dead heat, with others showing Fabricio Alvarado with the lead.. Roberto Delgado Webb captured the scene immediately following the Supreme Elections Tribunal (TSE) announcement. Stay tuned for more on this developing story. ...

Researchers have identified more than 250 ATP7B gene mutations that cause Wilson disease. About half the mutations change one of the protein building blocks (amino acids) used to make copper-transporting ATPase 2. This type of mutation alters the 3-dimensional structure of the protein or its stability, preventing copper-transporting ATPase 2 from functioning properly. A common amino acid substitution replaces the amino acid histidine with the amino acid glutamine at position 1069 in the protein (written as His1069Gln or H1069Q). This particular mutation occurs in nearly 40 percent of affected individuals with a Northern or Eastern European ancestry. Approximately one-third of Asians with Wilson disease have a mutation that replaces the amino acid arginine with the amino acid leucine at position 778 (written as Arg778Leu or R778L). In the Costa Rican population, more than 60 percent of affected individuals have a mutation that replaces the amino acid aspartic acid with the amino acid serine at ...

Cocos Island (Spanish: Isla del Coco) is an island designated as a National Park off the shore of Costa Rica, that does not allow inhabitants other than Costa Rican Park Rangers. It constitutes the 11th of the 13 districts of Puntarenas Canton of the province of Puntarenas. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 550 km (340 mi) from the Pacific shore of Costa Rica. Surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, Cocos Island is admired by scuba divers for its populations of Hammerhead sharks, rays, dolphins and other large marine species. The extremely wet climate and oceanic character give Cocos an ecological character that is not shared with either the Galapagos Archipelago or any of the other islands in this region of the world. -

BOULDER, Colorado (VN) - Over the course of two weeks, Specialized rider Todd Wells has gone from pushing his bike through deep jungle mud in Malaysia to running stairs at the Boulder Cup. On Thursday, hell set off through the Costa Rican jungle to defend his title at the notorious La Ruta de los Conquistadores.. Wells flew home from the Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge last week for the pair of UCI cyclocross races in Boulder over the weekend. He left again on Monday for San Jose, Costa Rica, for the three-stage event that opens November 1.. The dramatic change in race formats and the distance Wells traveled over the course of the two weeks is only part of the challenges facing the 2011 La Ruta champ. Saturdays race-time temperature in Boulder was barely above freezing, but Wells can expect 90-percent humidity and 100-degree temperatures in Latin America.. The Boulder-to-Costa Rica strategy paid off last year. The three-time Olympian went from snow-covered cyclocross courses to ...
Summary 1. There exists in the zone of Coto and Golfo Dulce (boundary zone between Costa Rica and Panama) a dermatosis which is contagious with tendency towards an epidemic character. 2. The clinical and serological characters and the influence of the arsenical treatment leads one to believe that it it a spirochetosis. 3. The form of the papules, their color, their mode of evolution, make one think of yaws. 4. Failure to find the spirochete was probably due to the rather advanced state of the disease. 5. The cases of yaws herein described, if correctly diagnosed, appear to be the first to be reported from Costa Rica.
Country aims to abandon fossil-fuels in favor of renewable energy Costa Rica has established itself as a pioneer in renewable energy. Costa Rico draws this energy from numerous sources and intends to continue in its efforts to abandon fossil-fuels throughout the rest of the year. The country has invested heavily in clean energy in order to become more environmentally friendly and curtail the potential impact of climate change. Costa Rica…. Read More ...

Diarrheal disease is a main cause of weight loss and growth faltering and stunting in rural children living under low socioeconomic conditions, and diarrhea is one of the most important events precipitating severe protein-energy malnutrition. An intervention in a Costa Rican hospital, consisting of partial rooming-in and promotion of breast-feeding during the short hospital stay, appears to induce a marked increase in breast-feeding in the neonatal period as compared to observable prevalence before the intervention. The intervention seems to stimulate nursing beyond neonatal age: more than 50Wo of infants remain at the breast by six months of age. Breast-feeding was much more prevalent in the intervened population than in a population not subjected to the stimuli; it was also more prevalent than in the rural area of Costa Rica as reflected by a survey conducted in a representative sample one year earlier. Furthermore, additional exposure of the mothers to field health workers seems to result in ...
Research on the gut microbiota of free-ranging mammals is offering new insights into dietary ecology. However, for free-ranging primates, little information is available for how microbiomes are influenced by ecological variation through time. Primates inhabiting seasonal tropical dry forests undergo seasonally specific decreases in food abundance and water availability, which have been linked to adverse health effects. Throughout the course of a seasonal transition in 2014, we collected fecal samples from three social groups of free-ranging white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus imitator) in Sector Santa Rosa, Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. 16S rRNA sequencing data reveal that unlike other primates, the white-faced capuchin monkey gut is dominated by Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus. Linear mixed effects models indicate that abundances of these genera are associated with fluctuating availability and consumption of fruit and arthropods, whereas beta diversity clusters by rainfall

I dont think its a matter of afraid, I think its a matter of what annoys every boss… The employee that I get a lot of calls about. I have a friend with a small retail company. Every day hes getting 2 or 3 phone calls about one of the partners from subordinates. He was complaining to me that its costing him 8+ hours a week of having to lend a sympathetic ear over the phone from this bad partners shenanigans. Pot clubs are no different in regards to the city (their real boss) Granted, they will get calls about them. Something smells, theres a lot of cars in the parking lot, I hate their signs. These are all things Id come to expect from well meaning citizens.. Unfortunately its been the gravity of some of these calls that made San Jose (and now the county) take even heavier actions. Me getting beat up by the owner of of a club that rhymes with Smell A Mental Well Dressed was just the tip of the iceberg. Theres been clubs owned by felons, theres been clubs owned by people with a ...

Telemedicine is the practice of medicine over distance with the use of telecommunications equipment. Early telemedicine solutions were a simple telephone call from one physician to another requesting advice or consultation. Today, telemedicine brings patients, physicians and specialists located hundreds of miles from each other into one setting for actual examinations, evaluations and consultations via store-and-forward and live video interaction.. The Telemedicine Network currently consists of nine sites with an additional 20 sites to be connected over the next nine months. By year 2005, 223 Health Centers or Patient Clinics, 21 Rural and Regional Hospitals and nine National Hospitals are to be connected to the network. We are providing greater accessibility to health care services and resources in rural communities as a result of this programme, stated Jamie Cortes, M.D., and General Surgeon at the Hospital Nacional de Nino, San Jose. Two major river systems drain and define the two parts of the Central Valley. The Sacramento River, along with its tributaries the Feather River and American River, flows southwards through the Sacramento Valley for about 447 miles (719 km).[22] In the San Joaquin Valley, the San Joaquin River flows roughly northwest for 365 miles (587 km), picking up tributaries such as the Merced River, Tuolumne River, Stanislaus River and Mokelumne River.[23] The Central Valley watershed encompasses over a third of California at 60,000 square miles (160,000 km2), with 46 percent draining into the Sacramento River, 26 percent into the San Joaquin, and 27 percent into Tulare Lake.. In the south part of the San Joaquin Valley, the alluvial fan of the Kings River and another one from Coast Ranges streams have created a divide and resultantly the currently dry Tulare basin of the Central Valley, into which flow four major Sierra Nevada rivers, the Kings, Kaweah, Tule and Kern. This basin, usually endorheic, ...
Travelling through Central America was on my bucket list. After months of painstaking research, I realized that doing it all was impossible. I settled on visiting Costa Rica, in the northwest of the long finger-like country. The Pacific coast beckoned with its black beaches, diverse communities, and abundance of flora and fauna. My adventures were inundated with wild animals, sugarcane fields, and one-of-a-kind experiences.. Here are some of the highlights:. Sweet as sugar. A small town named Filadelphia in the interiors of Northwestern Guanacaste province acts as a gateway to huge acres of sugarcane. Sugarcane is a big player in the countrys largely rural economy. All parts of the crop are used up so there is little waste. Workers use machetes to hack through the tall tough stacks of cane before it goes to the Trapiches, or sugar mills, to be ground into sugar.. My guide, Ulysses (how epic is that?), points out the sodas lining the main street. Soda is a term for the ubiquitous eatery found ...
Costa Ricas Judicial Investigation Organism blamed seven deaths in that country on the storm and said 15 people were missing. Flooding drove 5,000 residents into emergency shelters.. In Honduras, there were three dead and three missing, according to Oscar Triminio, spokesman for the countrys firefighters.. Damage caused by the storm prompted Costa Rican officials to postpone a World Cup qualifying soccer match between that country and Honduras, which had been scheduled for Friday night.. In Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency and mobilized 1,300 National Guard troops, with 15 headed to New Orleans to monitor the fragile pumping system there.. With forecasts projecting landfall in southeast Louisiana as a Category 1 hurricane, Edwards urged residents to ready for rainfall, storm surge and severe winds - and to be where they intend to hunker down by dark on Saturday.. Louisianas governor said Nate is forecast to move quickly, rather than stall and drop tremendous ...
Green iguanas are already on the endangered species list and soon theyll be featured on the best Costa Rican menus. Whats more, every environmentalist will be duty bound to eat as many of them as possible.. This is not an inversion of logic or a ploy to get rid of the Iguana iguana lot to make space for something more attractive, but a move away from the idea of preservation towards a more realistic sustainable conservation.. Preservation, involving a patch of land, a perimeter fence and a Keep Out sign, ignores peoples needs and human nature; it creates a conflict of interests and eventually forces protection to be compromised in favor of jobs for the encroaching populations.. Sustainable conservation projects take into account that rather important factor - mans need to make a living, and look for practical ways of protecting wildlife and the environment while creating jobs and generating enough profit to make it all worthwhile.. To sustain the delicate balance between man and his ...
Myotoxic phospholipases A2 (PLA2) are responsible for many clinical manifestations in envenomation by Bothrops snakes. A new myotoxic acidic Asp49 PLA2 (BaCol PLA2) was isolated from Colombian Bothrops asper venom using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). BaCol PLA2 had a molecular mass of 14,180.69 Da (by mass spectrometry) and an isoelectric point of 4.4. The complete amino acid sequence was obtained by cDNA cloning (GenBank accession No. MF319968) and revealed a mature product of 124 amino acids with Asp at position 49. BaCol PLA2 showed structural homology with other acidic PLA2 isolated from Bothrops venoms, including a non-myotoxic PLA2 from Costa Rican B. asper. In vitro studies showed cell membrane damage without exposure of phosphatidylserine, an early apoptosis hallmark. BaCol PLA2 had high indirect hemolytic activity and moderate anticoagulant action. In mice, BaCol PLA2 caused marked edema and myotoxicity, the latter seen as an increase in plasma creatine kinase

MIAMI, FL - A 41-year-old Miami police officer has been arrested by FBI agents in connection with a Ponzi scheme in which the officer allegedly promised investors guaranteed returns on high-interest loans to Costa Rican property owners. Officer Dermis Hernandez, who works for the city but lives in Homestead, was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. His arrest marked the second of a Miami officer within the same month.. Obviously, its not a good day when the mayor or the chief have to bring to light and to the press the arrest of one of its officers, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez acknowledged at an afternoon press conference with newly sworn-in Police Chief Jorge Colina.. It has been our history that this represents a very, very small percentage of our officers. In fact, even the two arrests this month represent less than one tenth of one percent of our officers, which means that 99 percent of our officers are conducting themselves lawfully and with integrity, the mayor said.. Somatic mosaicism of the expanded CTG repeat in myotonic dystrophy type 1 is age-dependent, tissuespecific and expansion-biased, contributing toward the tissue-specificity and progressive nature of the symptoms. Previously, using regression modelling of repeat instability we showed that variation in the rate of somatic expansion in blood DNA contributes toward variation in age of onset, directly implicating somatic expansion in the disease pathway. Here, we confirm these results using a larger more genetically homogenous Costa Rican DM1 cohort (p , 0.001). Interestingly, we also provide evidence that supports subtle sex-dependent differences in repeat length-dependent age at onset and somatic mutational dynamics. Previously, we demonstrated that variation in the rate of somatic expansion was a heritable quantitative trait. Given the important role that DNA mismatch repair genes play in mediating expansions in mouse models, we tested for modifier gene effects with 13 DNA mismatch gene ...
Global amphibian declines and extinction events are occurring at an unprecedented rate. While several factors are responsible for declines and extinction, the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been cited as a major constituent in these events. While the effects of this chytrid fungus have been shown to cause broad scale population declines and extinctions, certain individuals and relict populations have shown resistance. This resistance has been attributed in part to the cutaneous bacterial microbiome. Here, we present the first study characterizing anti-Bd bacterial isolates from amphibian populations in Costa Rica, including the characterization of two strains of Serratia marcescens presenting strong anti-Bd activity. Transcriptome sequencing was utilized for delineation of shifts in gene expression of the two previously uncharacterized strains of S. marcescens grown in three different treatments comprising Bd, heat-killed Bd, and a no Bd control. These results revealed ...
We used 13 microsatellite marker loci to determine the genetic diversity of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) grown in home gardens in two Chibchan Amerindian reserves in Costa Rica. We compared the levels of genetic diversity in the reserves with that of commercial varieties typically cultivated in Costa Rica. We found high levels of genetic diversity among cassava plants. Overall, 12 of the 13 loci examined were polymorphic in each Amerindian reserve (P = 92.3). Moreover, we found 36 alleles in the Coto Brus Reserve and 33 in the Talamanca Reserve. In the commercial varieties only nine loci were polymorphic (P = 69.2), and we only found 23 alleles. Heterozygosity was high for all groups of cassava (Coto Brus, Talamanca, and commercial varieties), but it was higher among the commercial varieties. The levels of heterozygosity and allele diversity indicate that there is significant genetic diversity in the home gardens that we examined. Another indication of the high diversity found in these ...

The genus name Dichanthelium was employed in both Flora mesoamericana and the Manual for seven spp. (in Costa Rica) that had previously been included in Panicum, e.g., by the late Richard W. Pohl (ISC) in his Flora costaricensis Poaceae treatment (1980). More recently, an important molecular study [see The Cutting Edge 10(3): 4, Jul. 2003] recommended that Panicum be restricted to the spp. ( ca. 100) comprising the autonymic subgenus, while supporting the distinctness of Dichanthelium, contingent upon the removal of several spp. The spp. to be removed from Dichanthelium formed a monophyletic group, previously distinguished as Panicum sect. Cordovensia (Hitchc. & Chase) Parodi, that appeared more closely related to Echinochloa than to either Dichanthelium or Panicum s. str. These exiled spp. are the subject of this synoptic treatment, wherein sect. Cordovensia is elevated to generic rank under the name Parodiophyllochloa Zuloaga & Morrone (something shorter would have been nice). New combinations ...

April Flowers for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online. A research team from the University of California, Berkeley, has discovered that tropical montane cloud forest trees drink water from clouds, directly through their leaves. There is just one small problem with this fact, the clouds necessary for the trees survival are disappearing due to climate change.. Declines and disappearances of cloud forest animals such as frogs and salamanders have already been correlated to changes in cloud cover.. The study highlights the vulnerability of this rare and already endangered ecosystem to climate change, said Todd Dawson, UC Berkeley professor of integrative biology.. The trees in a cloud forest gain some water through their roots, as other trees do. It isnt enough, however, to sustain the trees in what is essentially a very dry area, despite the constant fog or cloud cover. The leaves in a tropical montane cloud forest are constantly bathed in clouds, keeping them wet. When the moisture of the soil ...
BRAZIL. Scientists have found the 32,000-year-old remains of single-celled sea creatures more than three miles deep in the waters off the coast of Brazil. We have been able to show that the deep sea is the largest long-time archive of DNA, and a major window to study past biodiversity, wrote Pedro Martinez Arbizu, director of the Center for Marine Biodiversity Research in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, and author of a new study in the journal Biology Letters. The researchers say the ancient marine DNA could give clues to the history of the ocean.. COLOMBIA. Researchers are pointing to the ecological and economic benefits of shade-grown coffee. In addition to yielding higher quality coffee, planting shade-giving trees can control erosion, reduce the amount of herbicides needed, increase the amount of organic material in the soil, among other benefits, says Nicolas Frank Berguer of the Universidad de Chiles Center for the Study of Arid Zones. Berguer visited the National University of ...

Abstract Dengue has become an increasingly significant risk to global health. With up to 400 million cases annually, dengue constitutes the fastest growing vector-borne disease globally. In the western hemisphere, dengue, and more recently chikungunya and Zika, exist throughout much of Latin America. These diseases are spread by Aedes mosquitoes, which have been present in the region for centuries. While perceptions of mosquito-borne disease have been studied in Latin America, such qualitative literature on Costa Rica is relatively scarce. Therefore, this study uses qualitative methods to critically investigate the prevention of Aedes mosquito-borne diseases in Puntarenas and San José, Costa Rica. Specifically, this study examines local perceptions of policies and programs to combat Aedes mosquitoes and their associated diseases. Data were collected via household interviews (n=80); semi-structured interviews with public health officials, researchers, nonprofit organizations, and community ...

With the participation of officials of the Isla del Coco National Park (PNIC), the Monitoring Protocol for Pelagic Species and Geological Formations in Isla del Coco National Park is implemented in this protected wilderness area, whose results will allow obtaining valuable information about the conservation status of these species.. According to Geiner Golfin, a park ranger of Isla del Coco, the research is using the use of 2 cameras simultaneously, in the same structure, which will reveal the size of the animals. Submarine remote cameras were basically placed in different parts of the Island, as part of the monitoring we conducted to evaluate sharks and other predators, said Golfin.. The park ranger indicated that pelagic species include some sharks, rays, cetaceans such as whales and dolphins, sea turtles and fish such as tuna. Many of these species have an important ecological role, being considered top predators, which means that they are key groups to maintain the diversity and health ...
The average lava flow rate over the period June 11-26 (15 days) is 13 m3 / s, which is similar to that observed since the beginning of May, although a higher value was observed during the eruption. However, the difference between this figure and those who have arrived in recent weeks is not significant. The lava flow therefore remained almost stable for almost two months, on average twice as much as it was in the first six weeks.. The lava flow is now nearly 80 million cubic meters in size and has an area of 3.82 square kilometers. The increase in area per day is less than it was between the last measurements (June 2-11) (approximately 40,000 square meters per day instead of 60,000 m2 / day). In contrast, the thickening towards the east was 10-15 meters and 15 meters to the south. The strongest thickening, however, was in the Geldingadalur valley to the south and east of the crater, for about 20 meters.. ...
A cross-cultural analysis of mortality patterns is of interest to biological anthropologists and genetic epidemiologists. In this paper, we examine four agricultural populations from Costa Rica, Hungary, and the United States in order to determine if they suffered from a cyclical distribution of epidemics. When possible, we look at the mortality time series of adults and children separately. Of the12 series, only 2 show significant epidemic cycles. Both are in the Hungarian groups and both affect subadults. Otherwise, the Costa Rica, U.S., and adult series of the Hungarian groups do not show any periodicity of mortality peaks. Our results indicate that epidemic cycles are not as ubiquitous in small agricultural groups as the literature would suggest.

The most common adverse reactions are confined to the gastrointestinal tract. To achieve minimal GI disturbance with an optimal LDL-cholesterol lowering effect, a gradual increase of dosage starting with one dose/day is recommended. Constipation is the major single complaint and at times is severe. Most instances of constipation are mild, transient, and controlled with standard treatment. Increased fluid intake and inclusion of additional dietary fiber should be the first step; a stool softener may be added if needed. Some patients require decreased dosage or discontinuation of therapy. Hemorrhoids may be aggravated.. Other, less frequent gastrointestinal complaints consist of abdominal discomfort (abdominal pain and cramping), intestinal gas, (bloating and flatulence), indigestion and heartburn, diarrhea and loose stools, and nausea and vomiting. Bleeding hemorrhoids and blood in the stool have been infrequently reported. Peptic ulceration, cholecystitis, and cholelithiasis have been rarely ...
What most people have use for though are Dosimeters you can buy a handheld radiation detector pretty cheap that are good addition to a survival kit. There are different kinds that you can use that will detect radiation. There are radiation badges that will tell you when radiation become high. Workers at nuclear power plants use these to inform them of how much radiation they have been exposed to. Now also children in the Fukushima prefecture have each been given a radiation badge so they know if they are exposed to radiation. Some come in the shape of a pen that you can carry in your pocket while other are made more compact so that you can attach them to your keychain. And then you have what is called a personal radiation monitor. These are also called Dosimeters and also normally called Geiger counters. Although not all use the Geiger-Muller Tube for the radiation detection some use a semiconductor instead. These and mostly the older geiger counters seen are pretty big to carry around, so they ...
