Controlled Release of Essential Oil from a Rubberwood Box Using Activated Carbon to Extend the Shelf Life of Strawberries and its Possible Mode of Action. Saifon Phothisuwan,a,c Nirundorn Matan,b and Narumol Matan a,c,*. The controlled release of bergamot oil was evaluated from rubberwood boxes containing activated carbon and bergamot oil. Rubberwood boxes impregnated with different concentrations of bergamot oil (50, 100, and 300 µg g−1) with and without activated carbon were prepared. The treated rubberwood boxes were utilized to store strawberries at 6 °C for 21 d, while boxes with only activated carbon were used as a control. The inhibitory effects relative to Botrytis cinerea growth and quality of the strawberries after storage in rubberwood box were investigated. The microstructure of the rubberwood was evaluated via scanning electron microscopy. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry was used to quantify the volatile compounds. The rubberwood boxes with activated carbon and 100 µg ...

Sulphur shelf mushroom (Laetiporus sulphureus) growing on a tree. This large bracket fungus is edible, and considered excellent, and is also known as chicken of the woods . It feeds on its host tree, severely weakening the wood, and can cause the tree to fall. Filmed in Wales, UK. - Stock Video Clip K003/9077
Back in 1988, my first one, no not the kiss, but the Chicken Mushroom also known as Sulfur Shelf, Laetiporus sulphureus, was witnessed in Crescent, Missouri. Mike Kohler, a great naturalist and friend showed me this beautiful mostly orange mushroom growing out of a tree about 2 feet off the ground. It was so gorgeous and so unexpected, this multi-layered bright pumpkin orange growth out the side of a tree! The sulfur shelf always grows out of wood. It can be on the ground above buried tree roots, and is always stalkless. The orange of the main mushroom is fringed with an outside ring of yellow while it is still growing. The underneath side is yellow with pores and has large fan-shaped caps to 12 wide ...
A highly stable lipase from Geobacillus thermocatenolatus (BTL2) and the enhanced green fluorescent protein from Aquorea victoria (EGFP) were recombinantly produced N-terminally tagged to the lectin domain of the hemolytic pore-forming toxin LSLa from the mushroom Laetiporus sulphureus. Such a domain (LSL 150), recently described as a novel fusion tag, is based on a β-trefoil scaffold with two operative binding sites for galactose or galactose-containing derivatives. The fusion proteins herein analyzed have enabled us to characterize the binding mode of LSL 150 to polymeric and solid substrates such as agarose beads. The lectin-fusion proteins are able to be quantitatively bound to both cross-linked and non-cross-linked agarose matrixes in a very rapid manner, resulting in a surprisingly dynamic protein distribution inside the porous beads that evolves from heterogeneous to homogeneous along the postimmobilization time. Such dynamic distribution can be related to the reversible nature of the ...

A Geotrichum-like fungus isolated from a biodeteriorated compact disc (CD) was able to degrade in vitro the components of different CD types. The fungal hyphae inside the CD fragments grew through the aluminium layer and produced the solubilization of this metal. Furthermore, examination of CDs by scanning electron microscopy showed that the fungus was able to destroy the pits and lands structures grooved in the polycarbonate layer, confirming degradation of this aromatic polymer. The fungus secretes aryl-alcohol oxidase and Mn2+-oxidizing peroxidase, two kinds of oxidoreductases characteristic of ligninolytic basidiomycetes. Analysis of the ITS region of ribosomal DNA, as well as the morphological characteristics, the lack of sexual forms and the profile of enzymes secreted in liquid medium identified the fungus as a Geotrichum-like anamorph of Bjerkandera adusta (Willd.) P. ...

After I received my PhD in 1988, I moved to the Center for Forest Mycology Research at the Forest Products Lab in Madison, Wisconsin for a 6.5 year postdoc and temporary job with Dr. Hal Burdsall. There I worked on a variety of biosystematic and ecological studies of wood decay fungi, mostly in the Polyporaceae s.l., Corticiaceae s.l. and Agaricales, as well as root- and butt-rot fungi in those groups. I have continued to collaborate with other researchers there, including Dan Czederpiltz, since Madison is only a 2.5 hour drive fromLa Crosse. Current research programs there include the systematics, ecology and taxonomy in the genera Armillaria, Laetiporus, Bridgeoporus, Phlebia, and Phellinus, and also the study of ecology and pathogenesis of fungi in temperate and tropical ecosystems. I have also collaborated with CFMR personnel and with Dr. Karen Wikler on a project involving biodiversity of wood decay fungi of Israeli forests. In addition, the CFMR houses the worlds largest culture ...
Heres a little more about the person the genus was named after. The following facts were taken primarily from Taxonomic Literature (Stafleau & Cowan) and were sent to me by Richard Aaron of Toronto: Prior to receiving a baronetcy in 1865, he published under the surname Heufler and his full name was: Ludwig Samuel Joseph David Alexander Heufler zu Rasen und Perdonegg After receiving the baronetcy in 1865, he published under the surname Hohenb hel-Heufler in his scientific publications. At this point, his full name became: Ludwig Samuel Joseph David Alexander Freiherr von Hohenb hel Heufler zu Rasen und Perdonegg The name in the introductory paragraph above -- Ludwig Samuel Joseph David Alexander von Hohenb hel Heufler-- was taken from Biographical Dictionary of Botanists Represented in the Hunt Institute Portrait Collection (1972). It represents a fair compromise if one has to give him just one name. Its the one I would use. According to the most detailed source, he was an Austrian ...

Removal of xylan, one of two polysaccharides representing the hemicelluloses, was the highest for Bipolaris sp1 (30.6%) and at or above 25% for P. chrysosporium (25.4%), Dothideomycete sp. (25.0%), and N. crassa (26.5%). Dropping the amount of removal to 24% included Chloridium sp1, A. aff. phaeospermum, and two more Dothideomycetes spp., A. aff. tenuissima and E. aff. nigrum.. Removal of arabinan, the second polymer representing hemicellulose, was almost 50% for Bipolaris sp1 (49.5%) and Fusarium aff. equiseti (48.8%), followed closely by eight others at more than 45% (Figure 4). The four well-studied fungi removed less than 45% of the arabinan, with N. crassa being the highest (43.2%) and P. chrysosporium the lowest (36.8%).. Lignin reduction was the highest for the well-studied, wood decay fungus, P. chrysosporium (14.7%) followed by A. aff. phaeospermum at 11.1%. No other fungus removed even 10% of the lignin, including the other Basidiomycota, P. placenta (7.6%). The best of the Ascomycota, ...
The oxidation of Fe2+ was investigated by electron spin resonance spin trapping techniques with N-t-butyl-alpha-phenylnitrone (PBN) and dimethyl sulfoxide. Under pure oxygen, the spin adduct PBN/.OCH3 was rapidly generated by the addition of Fe2+ (0.2-1.2 mM) into phosphate buffer containing ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), dimethyl sulfoxide, and PBN at pH 7.4, but it decayed. The decay process of PBN/.OCH3 consists of two components. The fast decay was dependent on Fe2+ concentration. Another was due to destruction of the spin adduct by superoxide anion (.O2-), because superoxide dismutase (SOD) markedly prevented the decay. Catalase decreased the yield of PBN/.OCH3. When EDTA was replaced by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), both the generation and decay process of PBN/.OCH3 were slow. SOD and catalase effects were similar to those in EDTA. Fe2+ produced PBN/.OCH3 even in the absence of chelators. We could estimate the kinetic parameters by computer simulation, comparing the Fe2+

Bacteria that are exposed to sugars or carbohydrates can make acid, which attacks the crystal-like substance in the tooths outer surface. This process is known as demineralization. The first sign of this is a chalky white spot. At this stage, the decay process can be reversed. Using fluorides at home and in the dental office can help the tooth repair itself ...
To prevent cavities and maintain good oral health, your diet -- what you eat and how often you eat -- are important factors. Changes in your mouth start the minute you eat certain foods. Bacteria in the mouth convert sugars from the foods you eat to acids, and its the acids that begin to attack the enamel on teeth, starting the decay process. The more often you eat and snack, the more frequently you are exposing your teeth to the cycle of decay. ...
That is why it is vitally important that the wounds caused by the incisions are fully sealed with inert silica gel so as not to speed up the decay process. This also means that before any experiment, he painstakingly practices cutting and sealing for hours. By the end of his practice runs he is intimately familiar with the exact location of each internal organ and able to perform only the smallest cuts required to insert his probes.. Recreating the conditions under which an ancient fish would decay is also important. Surgical incision complete, probes inserted ready to acquire data, the fish is gently placed on a hammock of inert plastic netting (again, so that no chemicals plastic may give off will interfere with the natural break down of the body parts) and lowered into an aquarium of salty water.. Thomas experiments are sustainable and environmentally friendly too! Rather than placing the hammock directly on the tank floor, it is suspended in the water, by way of plastic ropes attached to ...
Strong $S_{2}-S_{0}$ fluorescence has been observed in LIF spectra of jet-cooled silylidene, $H_{2}C=Si$, produced by fragmentation of tetramethylsilane in a pulsed discharge jet. The experimental ground and excited state molecular structures have been obtained for the first time from rotational analyses of the $0^{0}_{0}$ bands of $H_{2}C = $Si and $D_{2}C=Si$. These bands exhibit pronounced rotational level intensity anomalies indicative of nonradiative decay processes. Quantum beats are observed in the fluorescence decay of almost every rotational level in $v^{\prime} = 0$ and in most of the higher vibrational levels. Fourier transforms of the beat patterns show line broadening and splitting at small magnetic fields of 10-70 Gauss. High quality ab initio studies have been done to locate the interacting electronic states and predict their vibrational frequencies and molecular structures. ...

The decay resistance and hyphae penetration of bamboo |i|Gigantochloa scortechinii|/i| decayed by white and brown rot fungi were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The bamboo grown in natural stand from three different age classes of 0.5, 3.5, and 6.5 years was harvested, oven dried, sterilised, and exposed to agar media containing 4% malt extract and 2% agar technical (no. 3) under laboratory condition for 8 weeks. The deterioration was expressed as percentage of weight loss, and the decay resistance classes were measured according to ASTM D 2017-81 (1986). This study found that the percentage weight loss was greatly reduced with the bamboo ageing. Regardless of age, the |i|G. scortechinii|/i| was classified as highly resistant to decay by white and brown rot fungi. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation showed that the fungi hyphae mostly penetrated into the vessel and proceeded to the pit and parenchyma cells.

Although it had been used on a small scale before, its use for furniture making has become much more common in recent decades with the development of chemical treatments to protect the wood against fungal and insect attacks. There are extensive rubber plantations with mature trees, especially in southeast Asia; the earlier practice was to burn the tree at the end of its latex-producing cycle. Currently, rubber plantation trees are generally harvested for wood after they complete the latex producing cycle, when they are 25 to 30 years old. When the latex yields become extremely low, the trees are then felled, and new trees are usually planted. This makes rubberwood eco-friendly in that the wood is harvested from a renewable source. The wood from the trees is light in color and straight grained making it easy to stain and match in woodworking. Part of the industry adoption of rubberwood was an international campaign to avoid use of a previously used light straight grained wood which was ...
Dry rot genome offers lessons for biofuel pretreatment processes. Feared by realtors and homeowners alike, dry rot due to the fungus Serpula lacrymans causes millions of dollars worth of damage to homes and buildings around the world. This brown rot fungus capacity to break down the cellulose in wood led to its selection for sequencing by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in 2007, with the goal of identifying the enzymes involved in the degradation process and using the information to improve cellulosic biofuels production.. As reported online July 14 in Science Express, an international team of scientists including DOE JGI researchers compared the genome of Serpula lacrymans, the second brown rot fungus to have its genome sequenced, against 10 other published fungal genomes. The DOE JGI sequenced seven of these genomes among them Postia placenta, the first brown rot fungus sequenced. The analysis not only allowed researchers to understand the chemical reactions ...

Most of the photos in the above slideshow are by Robert L. Anderson, US Forest Service.. Changes in wood chemistry resulting from fungal decay of Scots pine have been studied directly using spectroscopy, the study of interactions between matter and radiated energy. A 2003 study by Pandey and Pitman exposed Scots pine sapwood to brown rot, selective white rot, and nonselective white rot fungi. In this study, the decay process was followed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). After 12 weeks, the wood exposed to the brown rot fungus resulted in progressive increase in lignin content relative to cellulose and hemicellulose, whereas the lignin content of the wood exposed to the selective white rot decreased as decay proceeded. For the wood exposed to the nonselective white rot wood, both occurred.. A recently published FPL study applied both FTIR spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) to determine whether the pathogen caused any structural modifications to the ...

My current research program involves the development of new information and methodologies for the early detection and control of microbes causing lumber defects, tree failures, and economic losses in southern bottomland hardwoods within forest stands and urban areas. My specific pathology research emphasis is focused on developing novel technologies and control measures for the early detection and management of wood decay fungi, stain fungi, and wetwood bacteria, as well as other microbes that cause lumber cull and tree mortality, to minimize economic losses to the hardwood timber industry and to people and property in forested urban environments. Recently, I have initiated new research to investigate a new disease of southern and eastern cave-dwelling bat species, called White-nose Syndrome (WNS), caused by an invasive exotic fungal pathogen. As a new member of the national WNS Forest Service research team, I also am involved in developing new electronic methods for the noninvasive early ...
The two types of brown-rot fungi used by Ray et al are the Coniophora puteana and Postia placenta varieties, and their research showed that a 3 to 4 week treatment of the biomass (sapwood from pine trees in this case) significant;y enhances the release of sugars (the actual fuel source) by cellulose enzymes. *. Control experiments conducted to achieve similar, bioconversion results with other fungi proved far less successful. This research seems to be a successful proof of principle that brown rot may be the key to efficient biomass processing that researchers have been searching for over the past few decades.. That said, while biomass/bioenergy is an attractive alternative to burning (and extracting) fossil fuels, all such feedstocks release CO2 when burned. Different biomass feedstocks generate more or less carbon, but some sources of biomass are unsustainable, such as corn grown for ethanol fuel. Further, the (non-industrial) burning of biomass in the developing world-especially woody ...

Proper regulation of gene expression at a cellular level is required in all organisms for their successful adaptation and survival to physiological or environmental changes. In eukaryotes, a convenient way of regulating gene expression is achieved by post-transcriptionally adjusting the decay rates of different mRNAs. The Puf family of proteins in yeast belong to a widespread group of eukaryotic RNA-binding proteins that regulate the lifespans of target mRNAs by sequence specifically binding to 3 untranslated regions (UTRs) and modulating their decay rates. For example, the yeast Puf3 protein binds the COX17 3 UTR, stimulating its deadenylation and subsequent decay. However, the specific mechanism by which Puf3p regulates these decay processes was not known. In this research, insight was gained on Puf3 protein interactions and its mechanism of action for COX17 mRNA regulation. Through biochemical and genetic approaches, several decay factors involved in decapping and deadenylation events were
Studies of the spin, parity and tensor couplings of the Higgs boson in the H→ZZ∗→4ℓ, H→WW∗→eνμν and H→γγ decay processes at the LHC are presented. The investigations are based on 25fb−1 of pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at √s=7 TeV and √s=8 TeV. The Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson hypothesis, corresponding to the quantum numbers JP=0+, is tested against several alternative spin scenarios, including non-SM spin-0 and spin-2 models with universal and non-universal couplings to fermions and vector bosons. All tested alternative models are excluded in favour of the SM Higgs boson hypothesis at more than 99.9 % confidence level. Using the H→ZZ∗→4ℓ and H→WW∗→eνμν decays, the tensor structure of the interaction between the spin-0 boson and the SM vector bosons is also investigated. The observed distributions of variables sensitive to the non-SM tensor couplings are compatible with the SM predictions and constraints on the non-SM couplings ...
INTRODUCTION. The decay of organic matter returned to the soil via litter fall is an important source of inorganic ions for vegetation uptake. Nutrients are released from decaying organic matter by physical (leaching) and biological (microbial decay) processes (Baker and Attiwill 1985). The sequence from fresh litter to stable soil organic matter has been defined as a decay continuum (Melillo et al. 1989). Release/immobilization proceeds through time in different ways according to the mobility, concentration and biotic role of nutrients, the activity of organisms and the physical environment.. In Argentina, forest plantations cover ca. 800,000 ha. Twenty-nine percent (231,100 ha) are Eucalyptus spp., with 140,000 ha of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, growing on 10-12 year rotations, located in the northeast part of the country (Dalla Tea and Marcó 1996). The increase in plantation area of exotic tree species during the last decade, converted from native forests and grasslands, has ...
Abstract This version extends the computation of the liquid-scintillation counting efficiency to electron-capture radionuclides of 30 ≤ Z ≤ 54. The simplified deterministic models of previous versions are replaced by a complete stochastic model, which considers all possible subshells involved in the atomic rearrangement of the atom. The program can simulate samples in the gel phase, including the effects of the micelles on the counting efficiency. These effects have been found to be useful for buildin... Title of program: MICELLE Catalogue Id: ACPU_v3_0 Nature of problem Both Β and electron-capture are decay processes characterized by a large variability in energy. In the first case, one single Β-particle is emitted per decay following the Fermi distribution. In the second, several electrons (Auger and/or Coster-Kronig) of very different energies can be ejected simultaneously. The detailed simulation of these two electron release processes has practical interest in two situations: (1)

TY - JOUR. T1 - Role of an intermediate state in homogeneous nucleation. AU - Monnai, Takaaki. AU - Sugita, Ayumu. AU - Nakamura, Katsuhiro. PY - 2006. Y1 - 2006. N2 - We explore the role of an intermediate state (phase) in homogeneous nucleation by examining the decay process through a double-humped potential barrier. We analyze the one-dimensional Fokker-Planck (FP) equations with the fourth- and sixth-order Landau potentials. In the low-temperature case, we apply the WKB method to the FP equation and obtain an analytic expression for the decay rate which is accurate for a wide range of depth and curvature of the middle well. In the case of a deep middle well, it reduces to an extended Kramers formula, in which the barrier height in the original formula is replaced by the arithmetic mean height of the higher (outer) and lower (inner) barriers, and the curvature of the initial well in the original one is replaced by the geometric mean curvature of the initial and intermediate wells. In the case ...
The static and dynamic properties of excitons and trions in a 80 nm wide Cd_{1-x}Mn_xTe/Cd_{0.7}Mg_{0.3}Te quantum well with extremely small Mn content (x=0.00027) have been studied by means of time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence experiment at low and elevated temperatures. The trion binding energy has been estimated to be 2.6 ± 0.8 meV. The exciton and trion lifetimes have been measured to be ≈ 150 ps, and ≈ 200 ps, respectively. The temperature dependence of both lifetimes together with the multicomponent character of the PL decay process suggest a spatial localization of excitons and trions in the investigated quantum well ...
Formic acid is the simplest carboxylic acid that is often used as an antibacterial agent or preservative in livestock feed. It blocks certain decay process, thereby prolonging the feeds nutritive value. In humans, formic acid is metabolized rather easily at low levels, but at higher levels it can be toxic, especially as a byproduct of methanol poisoning. Our Formate Assay Kit provides a convenient 96-well plate based method to quantify formate in a variety of sample types. The colorimetric probe WST-1 is used to quantify formate levels in the presence of formate dehydrogenase. Each kit provides sufficient reagents for 100 assays, including standards and unknown samples.

The woods decay, the woods decay and fall, The vapors weep their burthen to the ground, Man comes and tills the field and lies beneath, And after many a summer dies the swan. Me only cruel immortality Consumes; I wither slowly in thine arms. Here at the quiet limit of the world, A white-haired shadow roaming like a dream The ever-silent spaces of the East, Far-folded mists, and gleaming halls of morn. Alas! for this gray shadow, once a man-- So glorious in his beauty and thy choice, Who madest him thy chosen, that he seemed To his great heart none other than a God! I asked thee, Give me immortality. Then didst thou grant mine asking with a smile, Like wealthy men who care not how they give. But thy strong Hours indignant worked their wills, And beat me down and marred and wasted me, And though they could not end me, left me maimed To dwell in presence of immortal youth, And all I was ashes. Can thy love, Thy beauty, make amends, though even now, Close over us, the silver star, thy guide, ...
In this video, Dr. Hamelin examines forest health. Starting from the stand level, he points out symptoms of disease problems in the forest. Inside the forest there are infection centres; tree level examination reveals several signs and symptoms of laminated root disease: root balls, delamination of lignon and the mauve-coloured mycellium of Phellinus weirii. Is this forest healthy? The disease centre makes for openings in the stand canopy which allows for regeneration; the white decay fungus that breaks down the log plays an essential role in nutrient cycling ...
