Although the spores of many fungal species were present in the galleries, the Allomerus workers behaviour favours the growth of only one species, corresponding to a monophyletic group of closely related haplotypes from the order Chaetothyriales. The occurrence of a single fungal species associated with the Allomerus galleries and of a single haplotype per colony argue for a specific association between Allomerus ants and this fungus, and thus towards host specificity. Furthermore, the ants provide the fungus with a substrate, control for potential invasions by alien fungi and the association with the ants is obligate for the survival of the fungus [8].. Such host-specificity is common in nutritional associations between ants and fungi in which fungal cultivars are mainly transmitted vertically across generations [5,6]. On the contrary, in fungus-growing termites, the fungus can reproduce and the interaction is transmitted horizontally resulting in a low specificity [15]. Note that nutritional ...
Excess capacity poses a problem in many developing country fisheries. These countries often pursue a development strategy aimed at expanding capacity under open access. Sustainable development, however, requires management. Principal-agent issues from asymmetric information between the regulator and fishers, which potentially form serious obstacles to fisheries management, arise in the likely forms of management. This article discusses principal-agent issues and examines the principal-agent moral hazard issue, which is due to divorce of ownership and vessel operations. The article also illustrates a method for estimating capacity when information is limited. The Peninsular Malaysian purse seine fishery forms a case study.. ...
I want to call to your attention, as we turn from crisis management to building more viable global institutions of financial intermediation, a sophisticated cynicism that opposes more resolute commitment to business ethics and corporate social responsibility.. I am not referring to the common mistrust of private enterprise on the grounds that working for personal profit is inconsistent with securing a greater good for society. This is the perennial tension posed by philosophers and religious leaders between the claims of virtue and the attractions of self-interest. Rather, I am referring to a more academically polished elaboration of that argument which is called the agency problem.. Briefly put, the agency problem is said to be an inherent dysfunction in all principal/agent relationships, a dysfunction so powerful that such relationships can never fully achieve their stated objectives.. The agency problem exists on the agent side of the relationship: agents cant be trusted to be diligent ...

We develop theory and a tightly-linked field experiment to explore the supply side implications of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Our natural field experiment, in which we created our own firm and hired actual workers, generates a rich data set on worker behavior and responses to both pecuniary and CSR incentives. Making use of a novel identification framework, we use these data to estimate a structural principal-agent model. This approach permits us to compare and contrast treatment and selection effects of both CSR and financial incentives. Using data from more than 1100 job seekers, we find strong evidence that when a firm advertises work as socially-oriented, it attracts employees who are more productive, produce higher quality work, and have more highly valued leisure time. Downloadable! This paper theoretically and empirically explores the effects of insurance parameters and a complementary information environment on patient´s primary prevention activity in the context of a managed care organisation. The theoretical model is based on a principal-agent setting in which the patient is acting as an agent in deciding about his preventive effort. Both for the patient and for the insurer the information distribution about prevention efforts is diluted. Hence, the theoretical results reflect the impact of insurance parameters as well as complementary information settings. The empirical investigation sheds the light on the patient´s prevention decision in the case of smoking. This depends on age effects, education, working time and health status. The research also stresses the relationship between monetary incentive schemes and individual behaviour as well as the influence of additional information schemes. In addition to the theoretical results, there is an evidence that
Downloadable (with restrictions)! We study the distribution of food aid in Ethiopia between 1994 and 2004 using data from the Ethiopian Rural Household Survey. Over this period village leaders had considerable discretion in disbursing aid subject to official guidelines and periodic monitoring. We use a principal-agent model and household panel data for approximately 940 households to understand biases in the allocation of aid. The model shows that correlations between aid and observed measures of need are not a good measure of targeting because agents have incentives to distort allocations within targeted classes. Consistent with the model, we find that the aid recipients match official criteria but disbursements are negatively correlated with determinants of need that are not easily observable by monitoring agencies, namely pre-aid consumption, self-reported power and involvement in village-level organizations. Our results suggest informal structures of power within African villages influence the

It was great to wake up this morning and find that Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for 2016. Their research is the bread and butter of modern economic theory and hence is taught in all first-year PhD microeconomics courses and more applied versions are taught to MBAs in electives on organizational economics.. Let me begin with the work of Bengt Holmström. The prize announcement begins with his work on the principal-agent model with moral hazard: An agent privately chooses an action that impacts the welfare of a principal. The principal observes noisy signals of the action and rewards the agent as a function of the signals to align incentives. Holmström asks: Which variables should be included by the principal is her performance measure and which should be omitted? In the sufficient statistic result, he shows that variables should be included if and only if they contain information about the action. Adding more signals into a performance measure ...
Typical plants are evergreen perennial subshrubs that grow up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall and have pale gray stems. The leaves are arranged oppositely on the stems and are lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate shaped ending in acuminate or acute tips. Like other members of the genus, the sap is milky. The flowers are in cymes with 10-20 flowers each. They have purple or red corollas and corona lobes that are yellow or orange. Flowering occurs nearly year-round.[5] The 5-10 cm (2.0-3.9 in) long, fusiform shaped fruits are called follicles. The follicles contain tan to brown seeds that are ovate in shape and 6-7 mm (0.24-0.28 in) long. The flat seeds have silky hairs that allow the seeds to float on air currents when the pod-like follicles dehisce (split open).[7] ...

We bought lunch and sat outside watching the people and boats toing and froing. Sea gulls everywhere and then we noticed that the gulls had a plan. Rather than wait for scraps to be thrown (which is discouraged as it feeds rats too), they now wait on the roof line and watch people come out with plates of food. If they see an open style plate, they dive bomb the person! Four or five birds all flapping around their head (seemed like ten!) and out of three attacks, it worked once. A poor teenager dropped his plate of chinese style rice and chicken and everyone was in there scrapping over the scraps! Even the pigeons and starlings were jostling for position. Smart! So you arent feeding us anymore? well, well take it all then! If you have ever watched the movie Finding Nemo then youll understand the seagull chant mine, mine ...

To ride for an hour at faster than 30 miles per hour puts strain on the body that few people ever experience. A human heart can beat only so rapidly before it fails; most of us can get within 10 beats or so of that rate for a few minutes before we have to cease whatever were doing. Obree would spend an hour there. He would produce an enormous amount of pure energy as he sped around the track, but fully three-quarters of it would burn off not as propulsion but as heat--the by-product of his effort. At rest, while the core of the human body thrums along at 98.6 degrees, skin temperature stays at about 95. Even with intense exercise, it usually doesnt get above 100. During the Race of Truth, Obrees skin would burn at close to 107. In one hour, he would burn about 1,800 calories--about three-quarters of a humans average for an entire day ...

A study was designed to examine the relationships between protein, condensed tannin and cell wall carbohydrate content and composition and the nutritional quality of seven tropical legumes (Desmodium ovalifolium, Flemingia macrophylla, Leucaena leucocephala, L pallida, L macrophylla, Calliandra calothyrsus and Clitoria fairchildiana). Among the legume species studied, D ovalifolium showed the lowest concentration of nitrogen, while L leucocephala showed the highest. Fibre (NDF) content was lowest in C calothyrsus, L Leucocephala and Lpallida and highest in L macrophylla, which had no measurable condensed tannins. The highest tannin concentration was found in C calothyrsus. Total non-structural polysaccharides (NSP) varied among legumes species (lowest in C calothyrsus and highest in D ovalifolium), and glucose and uronic acids were the most abundant carbohydrate constituents in all legumes. Total NSP losses were lowest in F macrophylla and highest in L leucocephala and L pallida. Gas ...

Jean Ensminger is known for her work in the political economy of Africa. Her research sits at the interface of anthropology, economics, political science, and development, and she has conducted several decades of research in one African society (Making a Market: The Institutional Transformation of an African Society, Cambridge University Press). Her early work in the political economy of development used insights from new institutional economics and analyzed property rights, transaction costs, principal-agent relations, and the relationship between economic incentives and a range of social and economic behaviors.. During the past decade, Ensminger was co-principal investigator, with Joseph Henrich, of the Roots of Human Sociality Project, which used economic experiments in small-scale societies around the world to understand the coevolution of market institutions and pro-social norms of fairness, trust, cooperation, and norm enforcement. This work appeared in Science (2006 and 2010) and in two ...
This paper presents a formal framework for modeling the effects of economic incentives on motivation. While economic models represent the utilities from monetary incentives and private benefits in an additive form, studies in psychology show that extrinsic and intrinsic motivation are non-additive and that there exists a continuum between the two. To accommodate for possible interaction effects, a non-additive probability model and evidence theory have been used in the principal-agent set-up. The model produces results consistent with prior evidence presented in social psychology studies.
AbstractIn semiarid regions like the Brazilian Caatinga, the long dry season suggests that it is a homogeneous environment. However, differences in climate, soil, relief, and duration of the dry season across this biome has prompted the division of Caatinga in eight ecoregions. Here, we test the validity of these ecoregions for bats, which play a fundamental role in the balance of ecosystems. A literature review was carried out to investigate the distribution of bat species in all Caatinga ecoregions, and the lack of sampling efforts. In total, 90 chiropteran species were recorded in the biome. Bat distribution is not homogeneous, and almost all ecoregions present exclusive species. Gaps in chiropteran sampling efforts occur in all ecoregions. A robust and significant correlation was observed between the number of studies reporting samples and bat richness of each ecoregion, indicating that more research will increase recorded richness in these areas, and in the Caatinga as a whole. The existence of at

Three methods were used to study N2 fixation and effects of water deficit on N2 fixation: C2H2 reduction assay (ARA), 15N dilution technique and accumulated N content. In addition, 15N dilution was calculated both in a traditional way and in a modified way, which takes into consideration N and 15N content for the plants before the experiment started. The three methods were applied on the following Rhizobium-symbioses: Acacia albida Del (Faidherbia albida (Del) A. Chev.) and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam) de Wit., and the Frankia-symbiosis Casuarina equisetifolia L. The plants wereabout 4-months-old when they were harvested.. Nitrogen derived from N2 fixation in control plants of Acacia albida was 54·2 mg as measured with ARA, while it was 28·5 mg as measured with the 15N dilution technique, compared to 30·7 mg calculated as accumulated N. In comparison, L. leucocephala fixed 41·6 mg N (ARA), 53·5 mg N(15N dilution technique) and 56·3 mg N (accumulated N). The Frankia-symbiosis had fixed 27·4 ...
Leaf-cutting ants can learn which plants are not suitable for the fungus gardens that supply their food before they even leave the colony, according to a study published March 8, 2017 in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Andrés Arenas and Flavio Roces from University of Wurzburg, Germany.
In the present study, we found that larvae of T. dichotoma remain motionless for 3-22 min after receiving pupal vibratory signals (freeze response). Considering that pupal signals of T. dichotoma played back near an artificial pupal cell protected the cell from being broken by a burrowing larva [5], the larval freeze response to pupal signals is responsible for rescuing pupae. Since a freeze response to pupal signals of T. dichotoma was observed in three scarabaeid species whose pupae do not produce vibratory signals, the long-lasting freeze response [10] of T. dichotoma larvae to the pupal signals would have existed prior to the evolution of the signals. Overall, our results indicate that pupae of T. dichotoma have exploited pre-existing larval behaviour to protect themselves by emitting deceptive vibratory signals.. Freeze responses are observed in numerous animal taxa such as fish [11], insects [10], birds [12] and mammals [13]. Such responses are thought to be an adaptation for avoiding ...

The most common violations during 2007-08 included filthy and unsafe additives, each of which accounted for 20 percent of violations. These violations together accounted for 42 percent of violations for China shipments, nearly double the share of violations from all countries (a combined 22 percent). Filthy violations occurred when the food appeared to contain a filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance (like human or animal hair, feces, insects, or dirt), was spoiled, or was otherwise unfi t for food (20 percent of violations for 2007-08 and 25 percent for 2002-04). This category also included some shipments rejected for containing non-nutritional substances or embedded foreign objects. Filthy violations occurred frequently for all types of products. Unsafe additives, including colorings or dyes, dulcin, cyclamate, and excess sulfite levels, accounted for 22 percent of 2007-08 violations. Melamine adulteration is included in this category. Unsafe additives were most common in fruit products. ...

On 6/19, we casually plucked off a big and healthy, plump and very gravid female off our front yard that was ovipositing and nectaring at one of our tropical milkweeds (Asclepias curassavica). They are quite easy to catch when they are doing this. Yesterday (the day after), we put her in a laundry bag over a milkweed, in bloom so that she could help herself to food when need, and let her be. By today, there were more eggs than we could count located all over the buds and leaves. We have lots of milkweed, but it is a major pain to be rearing these in large numbers but at the same time, keeping them outside can get them killed quite instantly. We could just leave the laundry bag over them for the first few instars, but its doubtful that would protect them from wasps and parasites. Such a dilemma ...

The Datsun Redigo employs either a 53bhp, 0.8-litre petrol engine or a 67bhp, 1.0-litre petrol unit, both offered in BS6 guise. We drove the latter and think that not much has changed in terms of the driving characteristics. The 3-cylinder thrum cant go unnoticed and vibrations do find their way into the cabin through the steering and gear lever. Floor the throttle and the motor comes alive, but once youve reached 4000rpm, the thrum from the 3-cylinder motor gets a bit annoying, so wed recommend shifting up early.
