BRUCKER KELLING, Monica et al. Irrigation regime and water retaining polymer doses in morphological and physiological characteristics of Cordia trichotoma seedlings. Bosque (Valdivia) [online]. 2017, vol.38, n.1, pp.123-131. ISSN 0717-9200. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-92002017000100013.. The objective of this research was to define which irrigation regime, whether or not combined with water retaining polymer doses added to the substrate, is recommended in the production of Cordia trichotoma seedlings. The substrate was used with different dosages of water retaining polymers (0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 g L-1). After emergence the seedlings were subjected to different irrigation regimes (4-4-4, 4-8-8, 4-8-12, 8-8-8, 8-12-12 and 12-12-12 mm day-1, alternating them every 60 days). The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design in a split plot scheme, where the main plot was formed by the different irrigation regimes and subplots by doses of a hidroretentor polymer. After 180 days of ...

A great many people are ignorant that burning incense may ease your torment and could help bring you alleviation. Certain spaces of the mind can be emphatically influenced by specific scents more effectively than some different techniques. One illustration of this is the manner by which a recognizable smell may trigger memory from your youth. It can do this in light of the fact that the olfactory sense is firmly associated with our neural pathways! Certain smells may animate a reaction in your limbic framework to initiate your cerebrum to deliver certain valuable mixtures. These may incorporate mixtures like dopamine and even serotonin, and some incense can help enlarge your choked nasal entries too. The entirety of this amounts to supportive alleviation simply by lighting a stick of incense. In numerous societies the utilization of particular kinds of incense defined with explicit spices, flavors and restorative plants to assist one with accomplishing a more noteworthy degree of core ...

Dermal wound healing involves a cascade of complex events including angiogenesis and extracellular matrix remodeling. Several groups have focused in the study of the skin wound healing activity of natural products. The phytomedicine Acheflan®, and its main active constituent is the oil from Cordia verbenacea which has known anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial activities. To our knowledge, no investigation has evaluated the effect of Acheflan® in an experimental model of skin wound healing. The present study has explored the wound healing property of Acheflan® and has compared it with topical effectiveness of collagenase and fibrinolysin by using Wistar rat cutaneous excision wound model. Animals were divided into four groups: untreated animals are negative control (NC), wounds were treated topically every day with Collagenase ointment (TC), with Fibrinolysin ointment (TF) and with cream Acheflan (TAc). Skin samples were collected on zero, 8th and 15th days after wounding. The healing was

Background. The coronary risk in diabetes (CoRDia) trial (n = 211) compares the effectiveness of usual diabetes care with a self-management intervention (SMI), with and without personalised risk information (including genetics), on clinical and behavioural outcomes. Here we present an assessment of randomisation, the cardiac risk genotyping assay, and the genetic characteristics of the recruits.. Methods. Ten-year coronary heart disease (CHD) risk was calculated using the UKPDS score. Genetic CHD risk was determined by genotyping 19 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using Randoxs Cardiac Risk Prediction Array and calculating a gene score (GS). Accuracy of the array was assessed by genotyping a subset of pre-genotyped samples (n = 185).. Results. Overall, 10-year CHD risk ranged from 2-72 % but did not differ between the randomisation groups (p = 0.13). The array results were 99.8 % concordant with the pre-determined genotypes. The GS did not differ between the Caucasian participants in the ...

We evaluated the possible antiedematogenic, antinociceptive and/or sedative effects of four different extracts obtained from the bark of Quassia amara namely, 70% ethanol (70EtOH), 100% ethanol (100EtOH), dichloromethane (DCM) and hexane extracts (HEX). The oral administration (100, 250 and 500 mg/kg) of these extracts did not show significant effects in any experiment. However, when administered intraperitoneally, the HEX extract decreased the paw edema induced by carrageenan, showed antinociceptive effects on the hot-plate test and on acetic acid-induced writhing, and showed sedative effects on pentobarbital-induced sleep. Naloxone did not reverse the antinociceptive effect of this extract. In conclusion, although the mechanisms are uncertain, the results demonstrated that these effects are apparently related to sedative and muscle relaxant or psychomimetic activities of the HEX extract of the plant. In this article, we examine the effects of shortcuts in the development of engineered systems through a principal-agent model. We find that occurrences of illicit shortcuts are closely related to the incentive structure and to the level of effort that the agent is willing to expend from the beginning of the project to remain on schedule. Using a probabilistic risk analysis to determine the risks of system failure from these shortcuts, we show how a principal can choose optimal settings (payments, penalties, and inspections) that can deter an agent from cutting corners and maximize the principals value through increased agent effort. We analyze the problem for an agent with limited liability. We consider first the case where he is risk neutral; we then include the case where he is risk averse. ...

Milgrom and Roberts (1992) identify four principles of contract design: When perfect information is not available, Holmström (1979) developed the Informativeness Principle to solve this problem. This essentially states that any measure of performance that (on the margin) reveals information about the effort level chosen by the agent should be included in the compensation contract. This includes, for example, Relative Performance Evaluation-measurement relative to other, similar agents, so as to filter out some common background noise factors, such as fluctuations in demand. By removing some exogenous sources of randomness in the agents income, a greater proportion of the fluctuation in the agents income falls under his control, increasing his ability to bear risk. If taken advantage of, by greater use of piece rates, this should improve incentives. (In terms of the simple linear model below, this means that increasing x produces an increase in b.) However, setting incentives as intense as ...

Suppose there is a principal-agent relationship between employer and employee in which effort is not contractible, but is elicited through employer incentive mechanisms. We term preferences that allow the employer to elicit effort at lower cost incentive enhancing. We analyze how such preferences affect earnings, and then provide evidence that one of the relevant behavioral traits, efficacy, as well as other psychological aspects of individuals, are signifiant influences on earnings. We conclude that measures of cognitive performance are not sufficient indicators of the effectiveness of schools in promoting student labor market success, incentive enhancing preferences are irreducibly heterogeneous, incentive enhancing preferences help explain the persistence of poverty over generations within families and, unlike cognitive skills, incentive-enhancing traits need not be welfare increasing for their bearers.
Firms, workers and consumers have to act in situations where they are dealing with a party that knows more than they do, such as the insurance applicant who may be a poor driver, the manager who knows more about the markets her firm is operating in than its shareholders, or brand-name owners (as in franchised businesses) do. This module discusses these topics through the Principal-Agent paradigm and covers the tools that economists have developed to analyse and resolve such issues. We focus on solutions that can give people incentives to act in ways that do not take too much advantage of their superior information ...

This article explains how the EU Council Secretariat exercises political influence in the first and second pillar. It is surprising that the Secretariat adopts quite different strategies in both pillars, given that its formal competences are so alike. The main argument is that the rationale behind the initial delegation of tasks to the Council Secretariat is pivotal in this respect. While the Council Secretariat in the first pillar was created to improve the efficiency of the decision-making process, in the second pillar it also constitutes - particularly in the field of security and defence - an expert bureaucracy. In terms of the principal-agent model this difference leads to other goal conflicts and informational asymmetries. Whereas in the first instance process interests and process expertise are central, in the second case the actual substance of policies also comes into play. Due to these different goal conflicts and informational asymmetries the Council Secretariat is forced to adopt ...

Although the spores of many fungal species were present in the galleries, the Allomerus workers behaviour favours the growth of only one species, corresponding to a monophyletic group of closely related haplotypes from the order Chaetothyriales. The occurrence of a single fungal species associated with the Allomerus galleries and of a single haplotype per colony argue for a specific association between Allomerus ants and this fungus, and thus towards host specificity. Furthermore, the ants provide the fungus with a substrate, control for potential invasions by alien fungi and the association with the ants is obligate for the survival of the fungus [8].. Such host-specificity is common in nutritional associations between ants and fungi in which fungal cultivars are mainly transmitted vertically across generations [5,6]. On the contrary, in fungus-growing termites, the fungus can reproduce and the interaction is transmitted horizontally resulting in a low specificity [15]. Note that nutritional ...
Excess capacity poses a problem in many developing country fisheries. These countries often pursue a development strategy aimed at expanding capacity under open access. Sustainable development, however, requires management. Principal-agent issues from asymmetric information between the regulator and fishers, which potentially form serious obstacles to fisheries management, arise in the likely forms of management. This article discusses principal-agent issues and examines the principal-agent moral hazard issue, which is due to divorce of ownership and vessel operations. The article also illustrates a method for estimating capacity when information is limited. The Peninsular Malaysian purse seine fishery forms a case study.. ...
I want to call to your attention, as we turn from crisis management to building more viable global institutions of financial intermediation, a sophisticated cynicism that opposes more resolute commitment to business ethics and corporate social responsibility.. I am not referring to the common mistrust of private enterprise on the grounds that working for personal profit is inconsistent with securing a greater good for society. This is the perennial tension posed by philosophers and religious leaders between the claims of virtue and the attractions of self-interest. Rather, I am referring to a more academically polished elaboration of that argument which is called the agency problem.. Briefly put, the agency problem is said to be an inherent dysfunction in all principal/agent relationships, a dysfunction so powerful that such relationships can never fully achieve their stated objectives.. The agency problem exists on the agent side of the relationship: agents cant be trusted to be diligent ...

We develop theory and a tightly-linked field experiment to explore the supply side implications of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Our natural field experiment, in which we created our own firm and hired actual workers, generates a rich data set on worker behavior and responses to both pecuniary and CSR incentives. Making use of a novel identification framework, we use these data to estimate a structural principal-agent model. This approach permits us to compare and contrast treatment and selection effects of both CSR and financial incentives. Using data from more than 1100 job seekers, we find strong evidence that when a firm advertises work as socially-oriented, it attracts employees who are more productive, produce higher quality work, and have more highly valued leisure time. Downloadable! This paper theoretically and empirically explores the effects of insurance parameters and a complementary information environment on patient´s primary prevention activity in the context of a managed care organisation. The theoretical model is based on a principal-agent setting in which the patient is acting as an agent in deciding about his preventive effort. Both for the patient and for the insurer the information distribution about prevention efforts is diluted. Hence, the theoretical results reflect the impact of insurance parameters as well as complementary information settings. The empirical investigation sheds the light on the patient´s prevention decision in the case of smoking. This depends on age effects, education, working time and health status. The research also stresses the relationship between monetary incentive schemes and individual behaviour as well as the influence of additional information schemes. In addition to the theoretical results, there is an evidence that
