From 1975 through 2002, annual traffic fatalities decreased from 44,525 to 42,850, while the rate of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled decreased from 3.35 to 1.51. However, decreases in fatalities have leveled off since the early 1990s. Since 1999, the number of alcohol-related fatalities has risen. In 1998, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century funded a series of highway safety programs. These programs, administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), increased funding to the states for activities designed to encourage, among other things, the use of seat belts and to prevent drinking and driving. The states establish highway safety goals and initiate projects to help reach those goals. NHTSA provides advice, training, and technical assistance to states and can use management reviews and improvement plans as tools to help monitor and strengthen the states performance. This testimony is based on two recent GAO reports that discuss the ...
The KILEN material showed reports of potentially serious psychiatric ADRs. Some psychiatric ADRs were more reported with certain antidepressants but anxiety, insomnia and suicidal behavior were reported for all drugs. But do these consumer reports differ according to information found in the Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC)? If we compare reports to KILEN between the years 2002-2009 with FASS 2004 [27] and FASS 2009 [28] we take in consideration that it often takes years before new ADRs are published in FASS. FASS is the most used tool for health care professionals in Sweden to use when prescribing drugs and therefore of interest in a comparison with consumer reports. ADR information in FASS is mainly based on information from the pharmaceutical companies and a somewhat good correspondence to the consumers reports is expected. However, the consumer reports gave another perspective of experiences with antidepressants. The consumer reports to KILEN contained more potentially serious ...

Theyve become household names: Celebrex, Lipotor, Pristiq, Toviaz. Youve probably seen the ads on television, and strained to hear long and frightening lists of warnings about side effects.. Drugmakers shell out billions of dollars each year to target consumers with those ads ($4.3 billion in 2009) and even more for promotions aimed at doctors ($6.6 billion in 2009), according to IMS Health, an industry group that monitors drugs sales and marketing.. The trouble is that the ads work. Consumer Reports research shows about one out of every five people who take a prescription medication said theyve asked their doctor to prescribe a drug theyve seen advertised; of those, 59 percent said the doctors complied, according to a survey in May 2010 by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. But what the ads wont tell you is that those newer drugs are often no safer or more effective than older medications that cost a fraction of the price.. Thats where Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs comes ...
In lab tests of 15 top-selling brands of fish oil supplements, Consumer Reports found that five fell a bit short on quality. Fish oil supplements have become wildly popular, with consumers taking them to treat a long list of ailments including menstrual cramps, heart disease, asthma, bipolar disorder, high blood pressure, depression, psoriasis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and pregnancy complications.. "Fish oil is not a cure-all. If youre considering a fish oil supplement, we recommend that you talk to your doctor first to find out if its the right treatment for you." - Ronni Sandroff editorial director Health and Family Consumer Reports Consumer Reports sent three lots of top selling brands purchased online or in New York area stores to an outside lab to evaluate whether they contained the listed amount of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, whether they properly disintegrated, whether they showed signs of spoilage, and whether they contained any contaminants, such as lead, ...
In a recent study by Consumer Reports, OSF Saint James - John W. Albrecht Medical Center was the highest rated hospital for patient safety in the state of Illinois. Consumer Reports considered how hospitals throughout the nation performed, including information from both surgical and nonsurgical patients, as well as ratings on other measures, such as readmissions, bloodstream infections and communication about drugs.. Brad Solberg, President of OSF Saint James, said, "Patient safety is not a program. It has to be part of everything we do -- all of us, all the time. Our staff does very well to keep that patient focus and it shows. Congratulations to them for maintaining that commitment to every one of our patients.". The Consumer Reports "Safety Score" is a composite of five categories that relate to hospital safety: avoiding infections, avoiding readmissions, communicating about medications and discharge, appropriate use of chest and abdominal scanning, and avoiding medical and surgical ...

A new study by Consumer Reports found arsenic levels that exceed federal drinking water standards in 10 percent of the apple and grape juices tested. The group also found excessive levels of lead in 25 percent of grape and apple juices. Arsenic and lead are both poisonous and can cause health problems, especially in pregnant women, infants, and young children. Kids drink a lot of juice-more than one-third drink more than recommended by pediatricians. Although there is no technical limit for these chemicals in most juices and foods, these levels found in five brands exceed the 10 parts per billion allowed in drinking water for arsenic and the 5 ppb allowed for lead (find detailed information about individual brands tested here in a PDF). Consumer Union, Consumer Reports advocacy arm, called for the Food and Drug Administration to establish maximal safe levels for these contaminants in juices. Several studies suggests that chronic exposure to arsenic and lead-even at levels below water ...

Product reviews written by real people are perhaps the most underappreciated slice of the consumer-generated-media universe, the explosion of which has captivated the advertising and media worlds. But as marketers fixate on getting their virals on YouTube and making friends on MySpace, these relatively unsexy product write-ups have quietly become the most common form of consumer content -- Forrester [Research] puts it as the most-used form of peer-generated content -- not to mention the one with the most direct impact on purchase decisions." Economical and easy to prepare in many ways, eggs appear to be perfect little protein packages. But Consumer Reports notes that the advice on eating them seems to change frequently, especially concerning whether their cholesterol content is safe for people with cardiovascular disease. So whats a health-conscious consumer supposed to do? One large egg has 186 milligrams of cholesterol in the yolk, while the egg white is cholesterol-free. An August 2012 study suggested a link between egg yolk consumption and plaque buildup in the carotid artery, a significant predictor of heart disease. That study contrasts with earlier research that found no evidence linking egg consumption with coronary disease. "What appears to be more important than an individual food is total cholesterol intake, regardless of whether it comes from eggs or other food sources such as full-fat dairy products or meat," says Dr. Alice H. Lichtenstein, director and senior scientist at the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at ...
