The UK National Ecosystem Assessment was finalized and is being published on-line.. Started mid 2009, the assessment led by Robert Watson and Steve Albon, it is the first analysis of the UKs natural environment in terms of the benefits it provides to society and continuing economic prosperity.. The key findings of the assessment were made available on June 2nd (pdf here) while specific technical chapters will be made available through June.. Until then the 87 pages of the synthesis report should keep you busy! Below are some of the main points raised by the assessment:. The authors mention the need to increase food production while at the same time decreasing its negative effects on ecosystem services. In fact, the idea is to harness ecosystem services to actually increase production. This sustainable intensification is what the French call ecological intensification.. ...

Embodiments include a device and a method. In an embodiment, a device provides a resource manager operable to select a resource management policy likely to provide a substantially optimum execution of an instruction group by comparing an execution of the instruction group pursuant to a first resource management policy applied to a hardware resource and an execution of the instruction group pursuant to a second resource management policy applied to the hardware resource.
The National Park Services draft discussion paper on ecosystem management recommends, The NPS should reduce the barriers to ecosystem approaches that result from artificially separating cultural and natural resources and strive to replace them with collaborative planning, research, and resource management efforts that reflect the real-world integration of material, human and natural features (National Park Service, 1994, Ecosystem Management in the National Park Service: Discussion Draft. NPS, U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C.). However, arguments concerning the value of archaeological data to ecosystem management fail to recognize the inherent limitations of traditional archaeological data. These limitations revolve around two central issues. First is that much of the data collected since the inception of cultural resource management some 20 years ago is fragmented, incompatible, and arbitrary. Personally I disagree with the first part of the assertion that, Given the wealth ...
B.1 General background The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) designated invasive alien species (IAS), alongside climate change, habitat destruction, pollution and overexploitation, as one of the main causes of global biodiversity loss. Alien (or non-native, non-indigenous, foreign, exotic, introduced) species (AS) are defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as a species, subspecies or lower taxon (such as a variety, race, provenance or stock), introduced outside its natural past or present distribution, which includes any part, gametes, seeds, eggs, or propagules of such species that might survive and subsequently reproduce where introduction refers to the movement by human agency, indirect or direct, of an alien species outside of its natural (past or present) range (COP 6, decision VI/23) and invasive alien species (IAS) as an alien species whose introduction and/or spread threaten biological diversity (COP 6, decision VI/23). This COST Action will align to these ...

This thesis studies symbolic power within Uruguays agricultural regime shiftbetween 2000 and 2010. This socio-ecological system (SES) has been changing froman agricultural-livestock farming system to one dominated by intensive cropagriculture. The aim is to understand the role of a natural resource managementprogram (NRMP) within the processes that are leading to a different state. The mainresearch method is a discursive analysis of actors position-taking regarding thechange in agriculture. The main results indicate that: 1) an interacting regime shift took place in Uruguaywhere a new type of agricultural producer was the main driver that generated multipledomain and scale effects; 2) soil erosion as technological and neutral problememerges as a consequence of the struggle between actors interpretations of theagricultural changes; 3) a reorganization cycle takes place in natural resourcemanagement program (NRMP); 4) NRMP promotes a further reorganization ofresources: development of new ...
Sustainable land-use management must account for the potential trade-offs between biodiversity conservation, productive land uses and ecosystem services. In this study, we used Marxan with Zones to generate land use plans that optimize conservation, farming and forestry land uses to reach biodiversity targets while minimizing the opportunity cost for local communities in an inhabited but data-poor National Park in the Andes of Bolivia.. Based on six alternative land-use plans, we identified the synergies and trade-offs between the biodiversity benefits achieved in the different plans and the delivery of four locally important water-related ecosystem services modeled with the web-based tool AguAAndes.. Although we find synergies between the conservation of high altitude Polylepis woodlands and their associated avifauna and three of the ecosystem services investigated, soil erosion levels were actually higher in scenarios with higher achieved biodiversity benefits.. Our study shows how systematic ...
The United Nations discussions on defining a new set of post-2015 development goals focus on poverty eradication and sustainable development. Biodiversity and ecosystem services are essential for poverty eradication, which is also one of the foundations of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Based on an assessment of current proposals of goals and targets, and a quantitative pathway analysis to meet long term biodiversity and food security goals, this paper discusses how biodiversity and ecosystem services can be integrated into a broad set of goals and targets, and concludes with relevant target areas and means of implementation for which specific targets need to be defined. Furthermore, it responds to the call of the CBD to consider the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and the related Aichi biodiversity targets in the post-2015 development agenda. The papers analysis identifies three overlapping but also supplemental ways to integrate biodiversity and

The Ostroms framework was used in order to characterize a small-scale fishery SES in Argentina. Several drivers for potential common-management and some detractors from the current common performance were summarized. Despite small-scale fisheries in the region have been considered as a single group of actors given its common history and interactions over the years, we should recognize that artisanal fishery system is at a bifurcation point. The working definition mentioned in Section 3 characterizes a SES as a bio-geo-physical unit… delimited by spatial or functional boundaries. Today, small-scale fisheries in BBE and MH-PC coastal area might be breaking as an entity and facing a reconfiguration of its functional boundaries. The heterogeneous preferences among users (Cinti et al. 2010) and the divergent characteristics of the SES gave rise to different responses to the problem of resource management: the increasing collective-choice and collective-actions towards sustainable management in ...
Background Habitat loss and overexploitation are among the primary factors threatening populations of many mammal species. Recently, aquatic mammals have been highlighted as particularly vulnerable. Here we test (1) if aquatic mammals emerge as more phylogenetically urgent conservation priorities than their terrestrial relatives, and (2) if high priority species are receiving sufficient conservation effort. We also compare results among some phylogenetic conservation methods. Methodology/Principal Findings A phylogenetic analysis of conservation priorities for all 620 species of Cetartiodactyla and Carnivora, including most aquatic mammals. Conservation priority ranking of aquatic versus terrestrial species is approximately proportional to their diversity. However, nearly all obligated freshwater cetartiodactylans are among the top conservation priority species. Further, ∼74% and 40% of fully aquatic cetartiodactylans and carnivores, respectively, are either threatened or data deficient, more so
Hannah Brumby: Geology. Justin Parker: Building & Construction Technology. William LaVoice: Natural Resources Conservation. Gabbie Furtado: Animal Science. In the last twenty years salmon consumption has skyrocketed, increasing by nearly 250% (FAO). Today the bulk of production comes from salmon farms (OurWorldInData). The EU, the US, and China make up over seventy percent of the global market for Atlantic salmon and consumption is increasing in each place (Williams 2017). Unfortunately salmon farming has proven to be both economically and environmentally unsustainable. Yet production has not stopped due to the high demand. In order to meet peoples demand for salmon, a transition to more sustainable farming practices needs to take place.. Aquaculture is often seen as a solution to problems such as overfishing and economic stagnancy, but it also creates new problems, causing detrimental impacts to the water and ecology surrounding the salmon farm. These effects include decreasing biodiversity, ...
This dataset was compiled as an attempt to understand how natural resource managers and research ecologists in the Great Lakes region integrate the ecosystem services (ES) paradigm into their work. The following text is the adapted abstract from a thesis associated with this data. Ecosystem services, or the benefits people obtain from ecosystems, have gained much momentum in natural resource management in recent decades as a relatively comprehensive approach to provide quantitative tools for improving decision-making and policy design. However, to date we know little about whether and how natural resource practitioners, from natural resource managers to research ecologists (hereafter managers and ecologists respectively), have adopted the ES paradigm into their respective work. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by asking managers and ecologists about whether and how they have adopted the ES paradigm into their respective work. First, we surveyed federal, state, provincial and tribal managers ...

PAME has teamed up with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) to investigate the current state of the Central Arctic Ocean. Together, they are working on an integrated ecosystem assessment of the waters surrounding the North Pole. These waters are mainly outside national jurisdiction. The objective of their joint ICES/PICES/PAME Working Group on Integrated Ecosystem Assessment for the Central Arctic Ocean (WGICA) is to provide scientific advice and to identify the appropriate authorities on issues such as possible future fisheries in the central Arctic Ocean and the ecosystems sensitivity and vulnerability to shipping-related activities (e.g. seabed mining, dumping, and extraction of marine living resources). This work will contribute to the implementation of ecosystem-based management in the Central Arctic Ocean. ...
The poorer the peoples and the less developed the countries involved, the more profound will be the future effects of desertification, and the greater the potential for tragedy when natural conditions, especially climatic, become difficult.. Desertification should be viewed as a breakdown of the fragile balance that allowed plant, human and animal life to develop in arid, semi-arid and dry subhumid zones. This breakdown of the equilibrium and of the physical, chemical and biological processes that sustain it, represents the start of a process of self-destruction for all elements of the life system. Thus soil vulnerability to wind and water erosion, the lowering of the water-table, the impairment of the natural regeneration of vegetation, the chemical degeneration of soils - themselves all immediate results of desertification - worsen the situation. Desertification feeds on itself.. Consequently, the effects of desertification are extremely serious and often dramatic for the poor populations of ...
Integrated ecosystem assessments (IEA) are a set of approaches for organizing science in order to inform decisions in marine ecosystem assessments at multiple scales and across sectors. IEAs collate and analyse information of a wide range of ecosystem components and pressures. IEAs provide knowledge of the status, changes, relationships, and processes in an ecosystem. Within ICES, several working groups targeting IEA for different geographical areas have been established over the recent years. Despite the ICES IEA WGs being well coordinated, different approaches are being explored and there remains a need for further exchange of methodological expertise and experiences. IEA-Exchange aims to enhance the scientific foundation for an ecosystem approach to management of, in particular, the Norwegian and Barents Seas by transfer of knowledge on methods for IEA from other regions. The intent is a two-way exchange of knowledge so that also the non-Norwegian project members will gain knowledge that can ...

Concern about degradation of natural resources has led in the ecological community to the concept of ecosystem services. The intent is to identify more fully what environmental economists would refer to as use values of ecosystems, concrete goods and services that have value, albeit perhaps unrecognized, to the market economy, as opposed to non-use values such as the pleasure of knowing that a natural system exists. The ecological community has also coined the term agroecosystems, recognizing that agricultural lands are, albeit modified through management, ecological systems. As such, conventional food and forest products are the products of ecosystems. Biofuels may be another important ecosystem service. Conventional economic analysis can be applied because these are goods that enter markets in the conventional sense. The values of other ecosystem services are not so explicit in economic data. Here we extend an economic model to explicitly represent the recreation value of ecosystems ...

Jordan has a varied biodiversity due to its unique geographic location, which has given rise to a number of distinct ecosystems. These include the Dead Sea salt lake, the fertile Jordan River basins, the corals of the Gulf of Aqaba, the plains of the Badia (desert), the rich northern highlands and the freshwater wetland of Azarq. Jordan is also home to two biosphere reserves - Dana and Mujib - created under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. MAB combines natural and social sciences, economics and education to improve human livelihoods and safeguard natural ecosystems. Biosphere reserves are places recognized by MAB where there is active local community involvement in their governance and management, research, education, training and monitoring at the service of both socio-economic development and biodiversity conservation. They are thus sites for learning and understanding about sustainable development. Despite the establishment of two biosphere reserves, a large proportion of ...
Sustainable management of national forests and grasslands within the National Forest System (NFS) often requires managers to make tough decisions under considerable uncertainty, complexity, and potential conflict. Resource decisionmakers must weigh a variety of risks, stressors, and challenges to sustainable management, including climate change, wildland fire, invasive species, insects, pests, diseases, demographic shifts, economic conditions, and changing societal values. The craft of natural resource decisionmaking will demand more adaptive qualities in the future and a more flexible toolkit. In light of these current and emerging challenges and the need for science delivery to keep pace with advancements in the disciplines of decision science and risk management, now is a good time to refocus on supporting and enhancing natural resource management decisionmaking. The science of decisionmaking can provide managers with useful concepts and tools to address risks, stressors, and challenges and ...

Biological diversity, or biodiversity, means the variety of all forms of life: genetic variation within species, the abundance of species and the diversity of their habitats. Halting the loss of biodiversity by 2020 is a global goal. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry safeguards biodiversity by ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources in its administrative branch. This includes agricultural areas and landscapes, forests, game and reindeer husbandry as well as fish and water resources.. The Finnish strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity outlines objectives and measures to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2020. The strategy was adopted in December 2012 by the Government Resolution on the Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Finland for the Years 2012-2020, Saving Nature for People. The strategy is based the objectives set in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and EUs Biodiversity Strategy.. ...
The PhD thesis entitled International cooperation for biodiversity conservation: an economic analysis examines the functioning and effectiveness of different economic instruments for biodiversity conservation at diverse scales. Different methodological approaches such as market theory, contract theory, and game theory are implemented. The first part of the thesis consists of an assessment of the economic conditions under which markets for biodiversity are expected to function, and their potential to be scaled up to a global level. The remainder of the thesis present game theoretical analyses on the modelling and functioning of International Environmental Agreements (IEAs) for biodiversity conservation. Game theory provides a novel opportunity to study the impact of key features of biodiversity on the effectiveness and stability of conservation agreements. This type of analysis is then applied to a case study of habitat conservation for a migratory bird species in one of the chapters. ...

Early in 1990 Governor Schaeffer created a Task Force to assess the problems and potential of Marylands trees and forests to promote land stewardship. One recommendation of the Task Force was creation of a forest conservation, protection and reforestation law. The Department of Natural Resources Forest Service and various partners wrote the Forest Conservation Act and Regulations. The main purpose of the Maryland Forest Conservation Act (Natural Resources Article Section 5-1601 through 5-1613) enacted in 1991 was to minimize the loss of Marylands forest resources during land development by making the identification and protection of forests and other sensitive areas an integral part of the site planning process. Identification of priority areas prior to development makes their retention possible. Of primary interest are areas adjacent to streams or wetlands, those on steep or erodible soils or those within or adjacent to large contiguous blocks of forest or wildlife corridors. Although the ...

Forest is a resource that is increasingly utilized for multiple purposes. The balance between energy demands and the long-term capacity of ecosystems to support biodiversity and other ecosystem services is crucial. The aim of this project was to increase the knowledge on and to develop methods and tools for trade-offs and synergies analysis among forest ecosystem services based on different forest management policies.. Paper I provides an overview of existing models for integrated energy-environment assessment. A literature review was conducted on assessment models and their ability to integrate energy with environmental aspects. Missing environmental aspects concern land use, landscapes and biodiversity. In Paper II a modelling framework was set up to link a landscape simulator with a habitat network model for integrated assessment of bioenergy feedstock and biodiversity related impacts in Kronoberg County. In Paper III we continued with the same management scenarios, while the analysis was ...

As Korea is not rich in indigenous biological resources, more than 2/3 of companies using biological resources are dependent on imports. Biological resources in the territory of Korea are estimated to account for some 100,000 species, and some 37,000 species have been excavated as of 2011. Thus, the Ministry of Environment plans to build Comprehensive Management System for securing and managing indigenous biological resources in order to strengthen our sovereignty on biological resources. To begin with, the ministry plans to build the list of traditional knowledge consisting of more than 50,000 pieces with high value (including 32,200 pieces excavated to date) in the industry in respect to biological resources by increasing the speed of excavating biological resources to 2,000 species from 800 species a year and investigating or excavating around 60,000 species of indigenous biological resources by 2020 (including 36,921 species excavated to date). In addition, the ministry is planing to ...
When we speak of biodiversity, the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (ABT), established in 2010 under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), represent the essential roadmap for biodiversity conservation. Sadly, it has now been widely demonstrated that globally, not only is the progress limited in achieving the ABT, but that the majority of them will not be met by 2020. The difficulty to mainstream biodiversity into all sectors is one of the main obstacles to the implementation of the CBD. Loss of biodiversity is not only an environmental challenge but also a developmental, economic, security, social and moral issue. This holistic approach is one of the main goals of the new global biodiversity framework (GBF) for the post-2020 era that are currently negotiated. This process is, in fact, an opportunity to raise the global ambition in biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use. Quebec intends not only to be an active voice throughout the negotiations of the GBF, but also a ...
Interest in conserving and managing the natural forests of West Africa dates back to colonial times when forest area was reserved for government use. According to Jackson et al. (1983), around 1980 the area of these forêts classées in five in West African countries was equal to 9 percent of the total area of tree formations (see Table 3). To this area should be added much bigger areas set aside as national parks or game reserves. The intention was that the reserved forests be conserved, managed and utilized by the respective governments. However, notwithstanding the theoretical interest in natural forest management, it usually remained little more than a concept. Some of the main obstacles to the development of natural forest management in Africa have also been inherited from the former colonial governments, i.e. outdated practices and approaches. Foresters continue to be involved mainly in raising seedlings in nurseries for the numerous afforestation and plantation programmes. Natural ...
Introduction Internationally, in recent years, a more integrated approach to the management of natural resources has been advocated. Integrated water resource management (IWRM) is such a process and it promotes the co-ordinated development and management of water and land so as to maximise economic and social welfare without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems (Global Water Partnership, 2000; DWAF, 2004a). One of the aims of IWRM is to improve all aspects of water resource management progressively - the way we collect water, store water, distribute water, conserve water and keep water pure. IWRM thus aims to find a balance between the social, environmental and technological perspectives of water resource management. The South African National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) (NWA) promotes an integrated catchment-based approach to water resource management. The law promotes a more equitable and sustainable use of our water and makes water everybodys business. Since we all have a ...
This handbook is a unique product. It is the first field guide to community-based fisheries management focused specifically on fisheries, such as those of the Northwest Atlantic, that are already highly regulated by governmental authorities, with licensing and other requirements that limit access and effort. While a variety of resource materials are available on community-based natural resource management, almost all of these are written by practitioners working in the South (developing countries) and rely on case studies and techniques that have been tested in less industrialized tropical fisheries. Therefore, this handbook is one of the few publications about community-based management in Northern fisheries. The need for this handbook was identified by participants working on an initiative on the Atlantic coast of Canada, Turning the Tide: Communities Managing Fisheries Together (www.turningthetide.ca). Turning the Tide works for improved fisheries management through community-based approaches,
Abstract: In this study, the land use change in a large basin of Calabria region (southern Italy) subjected to extensive reforestation at the end of the 50 has been carefully reconstructed and compared with the current situation. The runoff capacity of the basin was estimated using data available for the temporal periods before and after the reforestation interventions. The results show that the surface of the basin interested by former reforestation activities did not affect the runoff, probably due to a trade-off between the effects of reforestation and a concurrent increase in urbanized and degraded areas. Indeed, the hydrological response is linked to structural complexity of reforested areas, currently at an early stage of development that can be further promoted through forest management activities.
A Working Forest (WF) is harvested for timber production on a periodic basis while forests are regenerated in other areas previously harvested. Working forests are defined as forests that are actively managed to generate revenue from multiple sources, including sustainably produced timber and other ecosystem services. Working forests are not converted to other land uses such as residential development. Humanity utilizes wood products for cooking and heating fuel construction of homes, paper and countless other uses. As population grows over the coming decades the demand for forest products will increase. How can we balance the need for forest products with the goals of forest conservation and carbon sequestration? The project area of a WF is likely to have portions of forest that are simultaneously being harvested, rapidly regrowing and reaching maturity. In many countries the convergence of humanitarian needs for forest products and the needs of fauna for subsistence result in a loss of both. ...

Hal Mooney and I envisioned Ecosystems of California to tackle a simple question: what do we know about the trajectory of this globally significant regions ecology, from the deep past into the next 100 years? To understand process and dynamism in what has long been a complex social-ecological system called for a close look at prehistory as well as scenarios for the future, and management and use as well as natural history. An ecology that includes society has roots in the peculiar way that science evolved in California from the late 19th century: rapidly, with strong integration across disciplines from geology to botany, and in the context of sweeping environmental changes that from the outset linked ecological science with conservation efforts here. A social take on ecology is not the same thing as a perspective that nature is dead. To the contrary, in the words of contributors Bernie Tershy and colleagues, it is an explicit look at the power we hold given Californias extraordinary ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - How does population density influence agricultural intensification and productivity? Evidence from Ethiopia. AU - Josephson, Anna Leigh. AU - Ricker-Gilbert, Jacob. AU - Florax, Raymond J.G.M.. PY - 2014/10. Y1 - 2014/10. N2 - This study uses household-level panel data on smallholder farmers in Ethiopia to estimate how rural population density (RPD) affects agricultural intensification and productivity. Our results suggest that higher RPD is associated with smaller farm sizes, and has a positive effect on input demand, represented by increased fertilizer use per hectare. Overall, increased input use does not lead to a corresponding increase in staple crop yields, and thus farm income declines as population density increases. This suggests a situation where farmers in areas of high RPD may be stuck in place, unable to sustainably intensify in the face of rising RPD and declining farm sizes.. AB - This study uses household-level panel data on smallholder farmers in Ethiopia to ...
An understanding of risks to biodiversity is needed for planning action to slow current rates of decline and secure ecosystem services for future human use. Although the IUCN Red List criteria provide an effective assessment protocol for species, a standard global assessment of risks to higher levels of biodiversity is currently limited. In 2008, IUCN initiated development of risk assessment criteria to support a global Red List of ecosystems. We present a new conceptual model for ecosystem risk assessment founded on a synthesis of relevant ecological theories. To support the model, we review key elements of ecosystem definition and introduce the concept of ecosystem collapse, an analogue of species extinction. The model identifies four distributional and functional symptoms of ecosystem risk as a basis for assessment criteria: A) rates of decline in ecosystem distribution; B) restricted distributions with continuing declines or threats; C) rates of environmental (abiotic) degradation; and D) rates of
Clean Up of Oil in Byblos - Environmental Consequences of the Israel-Lebanon War - 2006 - GP0FDC Lebanese divers clean up oil on the sea bottom and off the beach where oil pollution has damaged the coastline along Byblos. The Jiyeh power station oil spill is an ongoing environmental disaster. The disaster was caused by the release of heavy fuel oil into the eastern Mediterranean after storage tanks at the thermal power station in Jiyeh, Lebanon were bombed by Israeli military in mid July. Fifteen thousand tons of heavy fuel have leaked and sunk into the sea. Greenpeace is in the region to identify and document environmental destruction caused by the Israel-Lebanon War. Along with the terrible humanitarian impacts, long-term environmental damage is an inevitable consequence of war.
Global Environmental Issues, second edition builds on the popularity of the first edition, viewing global environmental problems as complex issues with a network of causes, influenced by a range of actors with differing priorities. The book recognises that science underpins much of what happens in society and therefore it is important to be able to interpret the environmental and social consequences of scientific developments. In addition to discussing the main biophysical causes, the book illustrates how socio-economic and political factors determine why and how people use land, resources and technology, and how this in turn affects natural resource management. This edition includes new chapters on the politics of science, International environmental regulation and treaties, environmental issues in a globalised world and natural resource management.. Global Environmental Issues, second edition is essential reading for upper level undergraduates and Masters students within departments of ...
EU consumption linked to tropical deforestation. A sixth of all emissions resulting from the typical diet of an EU citizen can be directly linked to deforestation of tropical forests. Two new studies, from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, shed new light on this impact, by combining satellite imagery of the rainforest, global land use statistics and data of international trade patterns. In effect, you could say that the EU imports large amounts of deforestation every year. If the EU really wants to achieve its climate goals, it must set harder environmental demands on those who export food to the EU, says Martin Persson from Chalmers, one of the researchers behind the studies.. The link between production of certain foods and deforestation has been known before. But what Martin Persson and Chalmers colleague Florence Pendrill have now investigated is the extent to which deforestation in the tropics is linked to food production, and then where those foods are eventually consumed. In ...

Wildfires are nothing new. They are a part of nature, but what Oregon and most of the Pacific Northwest is facing this summer is unprecedented.. While climate change is a factor, decades of fire suppression and broken federal forest management policies have left our forests overgrown and waiting to burn. Forests are not static - they grow, die, and burn. In Oregon alone, the amount of timber in our national forests increases through growth by over 50% every year. The result is unnaturally dense forests that fuel increasingly catastrophic wildfires.. We must do better.. In 2018, I helped lead Congress to pass into law some of the most extensive forest management policy reforms our nation had seen in more than a decade. We provided additional tools and funding to the Forest Service to more quickly implement critical forest management projects.. The Trump administration is taking advantage of these tools, and progress is being made toward improving the management of our federal lands. The U.S. ...
ADB is helping raise the productivity of the forestry sector in northwest Peoples Republic of China. Despite continued forest conversion and degradation, forest cover is increasing in countries across the globe. New forests are regenerating on former agricultural land, and forest plantations are being established for commercial and restoration purposes. Plantations and restored forests can improve ecosystem services and enhance biodiversity conservation, but will not match the composition and structure of the original forest cover. Approaches to restoring forest ecosystems depend strongly on levels of forest and soil degradation, residual vegetation, and desired restoration outcomes. Opportunities abound to combine ambitious forest restoration and regeneration goals with sustainable rural livelihoods and community participation. New forests will require adaptive management as dynamic, resilient systems that can withstand stresses of climate change, habitat fragmentation, and other anthropogenic effects. ...
Globally, forests cover nearly one third of the land area and they contain over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity. Both the extent and quality of forest habitat continue to decrease and the associated loss of biodiversity jeopardizes forest ecosystem functioning and the ability of forests to provide ecosystem services. In the light of the increasing population pressure, it is of major importance not only to conserve, but also to restore forest ecosystems. Ecological restoration has recently started to adopt insights from the biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) perspective. Central is the focus on restoring the relation between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Here we provide an overview of important considerations related to forest restoration that can be inferred from this BEF-perspective. Restoring multiple forest functions requires multiple species. It is highly unlikely that species-poor plantations, which may be optimal for above-ground biomass production, will outperform species diverse

Ecosystem services are emerging as a key driver of conservation policy and environmental management. Delivery of ecosystem services depends on the efficient functioning of ecosystems, which in turn depends on biodiversity and environmental conditions. Many marine ecosystems are extremely productive and highly valued, but they are increasingly threatened by human activities. With contributions from leading researchers, this volume synthesises current understanding of the effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning caused by a variety of human activities and pressures at play in coastal marine ecosystems. The authors examine the likely consequences for ecosystem service provision, covering key topics including fisheries, aquaculture, physical structures, nutrients, chemical contaminants, marine debris and invasive species. Critically reviewing the latest developments, this is a unique resource both for environmental managers and policy-makers, and for researchers and students in marine ...
