May 5, 2011 (Updated August 1, 2011) - Genetic testing is increasingly important in determining potential cardiac conditions in patients and is used in clinical settings more than ever before. To ensure that physicians have up-to-date knowledge of the evolving role of genetic testing for sudden death predisposing, genetic heart diseases in cardiology, which can be life-saving for some patients, the Heart Rhythm Society and the European Heart Rhythm Association have prepared HRS/EHRA Expert Consensus Statement on the State of Genetic Testing for the Channelopathies and Cardiomyopathies. The consensus statement was released at Heart Rhythm 2011, the Heart Rhythm Societys 32nd Annual Scientific Sessions.

August 28, 2013 - Experts have found that radiation dosage can have serious complications for patients with cancer. Cancer patients who receive chest radiation should be evaluated for heart disease before beginning radiation, and every five to 10 years afterward, according to the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and the European Assn. of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). This expert consensus statement on the use of imaging to detect radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) will be published in the September issue of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography (JASE). The writing group was co-chaired by Vuyisile Nkomo, M.D., an echocardiographer from the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.. When asked about the need for this expert consensus statement, Nkomo said, "In the past, patients received high doses of radiation to the chest to treat breast cancer or lymphoma or esophageal cancer, but without adequate shielding of the ...

Evaluating donors can lead to many ethical decisions. As Dr.Blumberg stated today, there is no real evidence as to what to do with high risk donors. We all agree that recipients should be aware of the increased risk if they are receiving a CDC high risk kidney. But how do we tell them? We can not tell a recipient specifics because we must adhere to hipaa regulations. We are obligated to let the recipient know of their increased risk. They can receive general information that their donor may be at higher risk ...
The etiologic paradigm of complex human disorders such as autism is that genetic and environmental risk factors are independent and additive, but the interactive effects at the epigenetic interface are largely ignored. Genomic technologies have radically changed perspective on the human genome and how the epigenetic interface may impact complex human disorders.. Here, I review recent genomic, environmental and epigenetic findings that suggest a new paradigm of "integrative genomics" in which genetic variation in genomic size may be impacted by dietary and environmental factors that influence the genomic saturation of DNA methylation.. Human genomes are highly repetitive, but the interface of large-scale genomic differences with environmental factors that alter the DNA methylome such as dietary folate is under-explored. In addition to obvious direct effects of some environmental toxins on the genome by causing chromosomal breaks, non-mutagenic toxin exposures correlate with DNA hypomethylation ...

In 2014, the US Department of Veterans Affairs practice guidelines recommended nonfasting lipid testing for cardiovascular risk assessment.1 Other recent clinical guidelines and expert consensus statements from Europe and Canada now also recommend nonfasting lipid testing for most routine clinical evaluations.. Physiologically, we spend most of our lives in the nonfasting state, yet fasting lipid testing was standard practice advocated by earlier clinical guidelines. The rationale for fasting before measuring lipids was to reduce variability and to allow for a more accurate derivation of the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration using the Friedewald formula. There was also concern that an increase in triglyceride concentrations after consuming a fatty meal would reduce the validity of the results. However, numerous studies have found that the increase in plasma triglycerides after normal food intake is much less than that during a fat-tolerance test, making this less of a ...

on the William & Mary campus.. Algae are good candidates for use as biofuel because of their rapid growth rates, ability to take-up nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, and some of these aquatic plants have as much as 50 percent oil content, depending on environmental factors. ChAP differs from other algal biofuel initiatives in two ways.. "In the first place, were going to work with many species of algae, as opposed to concentrating on farming a monoculture, or attempting to contain genetically modified algae in open-water environments," Manos said. Most current algae studies focus on one high-yield species or strain of algae, but Manos explained that using a polyculture approach makes the algae less susceptible to disease and generally more robust. One of the goals of ChAP will be to develop processes to maximize the effective energy yield from a harvest that varies in oil content.. The other difference is that the process is designed to work without competing with either fresh-water ...

History Upside Down from the May 15, 1997 issue To the Editors:. After warmly praising my book Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies as "artful, informative, and delightful" [NYR, May 15], the distinguished historian William H. McNeill identifies two contrasting approaches to history: the traditional emphasis on autonomous cultural developments that he favors, versus my books emphasis on environmental factors. Without disputing the value of McNeills approach, I believe that our differences arise from the different historical scales that we consider. My focus is on trends over whole continents since the last Ice Age; his, on much smaller areas for shorter times.. Historys broadest pattern is its different unfolding on different continents over the last 13,000 years. In 11,000 BC, all societies everywhere were bands of preliterate hunter-gatherers with stone tools. By 1492 AD, that was still true in all of Australia, much of the Americas, and some of sub-Saharan Africa, but ...
Enter the theory of baselining. A baseline is a starting point. For example, a baseline on a clean, new vehicle would be the PCMs base operating data, at warm idle or any given load range with no miles and no deposit buildup.. The vehicle technically leaves its designed baseline when it reaches its equilibrium point, which is the point at which the fuel control system must begin to adjust for deposits and environmental operating variables. So, for technicians in this context, baseline diagnostic theory seeks to figure out two things:. •Where should a vehicles operating data be running (if it were new, clean and baselined) based on environmental factors, current altitude, temperature, etc.?. •Where is a vehicles current operating data (both scanner and mechanical data) taking us in relation to our problem?. The onboard engine subsystems constantly adjust for these environmental and depositing changes. Our job gets tougher when we need to consider and test for these engine depositing ...

The present invention uses a list management server for specifying conference participants in an IMS environment. More specifically, a conference list can be established for a standard list management server. The conference list can be a group list that is identified with a unique public URI. The group list can include multiple members, where each member can be identified by a member URI. Members can be specific participants associated with a user specific URI and/or can be a group of participants. When the conference is initiated, a new communication session can be instantiated and a conferencing application execute. After session instantiation, participants included in the conference list can join the session.
The Peoples Charter for Health is a statement of the shared vision, goals, principles and calls for action that unite all the members of the PHM coalition. It is most widely endorsed consensus document on health since the Alma Ata Declaration. The Peoples Health Charter was formulated and endorsed by the participants of the First Peoples Health Assembly held at Dhaka, Bangladesh in December 2000.. In 1978, at the Alma-Ata Conference, ministers from 134 countries in association with WHO and UNICEF called for Health for All by the Year 2000 and selected Primary Health Care as the best tool to achieve it.. Unfortunately, that dream never came true. The health status of Third World populations has not improved. In many cases it has deteriorated further. Currently, we are facing a global health crisis, characterised by growing inequalities within and between countries. New threats to health are continually emerging. This is compounded by negative forces of globalisation which prevent the ...

Summary: Managing the shift from manual to robotic compounding of i.v. therapies requires an awareness of how automation affects practice and how to best implement robotics into current practice. An international panel of pharmacy professionals, researchers, and technology leaders with experience in i.v. robotics collaborated during a two-day meeting in August 2014 to define a general set of principles to broaden the understanding of the fundamental elements of robotic compounding worldwide. Participants were divided into four working groups (technology and safety; drugs and products; personnel; and facilities and quality) to analyze specific aspects of robotic compounding practice. The four working groups produced an initial list of 92 statements. This list was condensed to 35 statements by consolidating similar and overlapping statements from the different work groups. Participants were surveyed again to assess agreement with the 35 statements and solicit additional clarification. Respondents ...

The inaugural conference was held on the 10th anniversary of the Asian financial crisis and examined the impact of that crisis on Asian economies, and the financial and banking reforms that led to economic recovery and renewed growth throughout the region. Conference participants discussed lessons from the crisis, including lessons relevant to the United States and other Western economies.
Classification criteria are standardised definitions with the primary aim of creating homogeneous cohorts for research [25]. In this way, they favour high specificity over sensitivity. In 2015, the IPAF criteria [6] were created via consensus opinion by an expert international panel of 13 pulmonologists, four rheumatologists, one thoracic radiologist and one pulmonary pathologist. Importantly, the panel was largely composed by the same investigators who had previously put forth criteria for ILD with autoimmune characteristics. The IPAF criteria, endorsed by the ATS and ERS proposed a research classification for interstitial pneumonia patients who presented at least one specific feature from at least two of the following three domains: clinical, serological and morphological. The proposed IPAF classification has the advantage of removing previous nomenclatures, creating a framework to study a more uniform population in a readily applicable manner worldwide.. Comparing the already reported IPAF ...

Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is a safe, effective treatment for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and allergic asthma. However, AITs clinical effect is still contested - primarily due to heterogeneity in clinical trial designs, study populations, therapeutic formulations and efficacy criteria. After discussing current concepts and unmet needs, an international panel of experts made several recommendations: (i) explore and validate definitions for [clinical] responders in AIT-trials; (ii) use of well-documented, standardized provocation tests prior to inclusion of subjects with relevant diseases in AIT trials; (iii) monitoring neo-sensitizations and occurrence of new allergy in extended AIT trials, and exclusion of polyallergic participants; (iv) validation of allergen exposure chambers with regard to natural exposure; (v) in studies of seasonal allergies, focus on peak exposure but also consider organising two parallel, geographically distinct but otherwise identical trials; (vi) discuss adaptive ...
Chemists in research and development laboratories have relatively few published resources on the design and analysis of experiments. In recent years massive changes have occurred in the tools and instrumentation at their disposal, in the scale of databases linking the properties of pure materials, solutions or other mixtures to molecular structure, and in the sheer ability to collect data through automated data acquisition systems. Despite these advances, many chemists still apply only rudimentary data analysis techniques and remain unaware of the advances made in information extraction over the last decade. Design and Analysis in Chemical Research provides the means to overcome that problem. An international panel of contributors addresses the principles of design and analysis in chemical research and development, with a thoughtful, user-friendly approach. Organized in chapters dealing with major activities, this volume generates understanding through numerous examples and practical ...
An international panel of doctors has decided that a type of tumor that was classified as a cancer is not a cancer at all.. As a result, they have officially downgraded the condition, and thousands of patients will be spared removal of their thyroid, treatment with radioactive iodine and regular checkups for the rest of their lives, all to protect against a tumor that was never a threat.. Their conclusion, and the data that led to it, was reported Thursday in the journal JAMA Oncology. The change is expected to affect about 10,000 of the nearly 65,000 thyroid cancer patients a year in the United States. It may also offer grist to those who have been arguing for the reclassification of some other forms of cancer, including certain lesions in the breast and prostate.. The reclassified tumor is a small lump in the thyroid that is completely surrounded by a capsule of fibrous tissue. Its nucleus looks like a cancer but the cells have not broken out of their capsule, and surgery to remove the entire ...

During the decision conference participants assessed weights within each cluster of criteria. The criterion within a cluster judged to be associated with the largest swing weight was assigned an arbitrary score of 100. Then, each swing on the remaining criteria in the cluster was judged by the group compared with the 100 score, in terms of a ratio. For example, in the cluster of four criteria under the category physical harm to users, the swing weight for drug-related mortality was judged to be the largest difference of the four, so it was given a weight of 100. The group judged the next largest swing in harm to be in drug-specific mortality, which was 80% as great as for drug-related mortality, so it was given a weight of 80. Thus, the computer multiplied the scores for all the drugs on the drug-related mortality scale by 0.8, with the result that the weighted harm of heroin on this scale became 80 as compared with heroins score of 100 on drug-specific mortality. Next, the 100-weighted swings ...

Attendees to the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundationchr(39)s conference on women in insurance said organizations are more likely to develop innovative products and services if they include a range of people with different backgrounds.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the first Interdisciplinary Workshop on Security and Human Behavior at MIT this week. Organized by Alessandro Acquisti, Ross Anderson, George Lowenstein, and Bruce Schneier, the workshop brought together an aggressively diverse group of 42 researchers from perspectives across computing, psychology, economics, sociology, philosophy and even photography and skepticism. As someone long interested in security on the human scale [pdf], it was exciting to meet so many like minded people from outside my own field. And judging from the comments on Ross and Bruces blogs, theres a lot more interest in this subject than from just the attendees. There wasnt a single climactic insight or big result from the workshop; the participants mainly gave overviews of their fields or talked about their previously published work. The point was to get people with similar interests but widely different backgrounds talking (and hopefully collaborating) with one another, and it ...
As I was reading your email and post it made me think to ask you this question. It may have nothing to do with it, but I would really love your expert opinion and thoughts on this. I am teaching ELA for summer school to 6th-8th grade. Mind you that they are students who either dont do well during the school year, dont like school, therefore they dont care and dont do well, or they really do struggle. I get a mix of grades and of course each student is different in their needs. They also come from different backgrounds with different issues. I have taught summer school for 14 years now. In the beginning they had a curriculum for us to use. However, it became outdated and was not beneficial to all students of different levels and abilities. That was for the first two years. After that, I used what I could find online or from other teachers. The last couple of years I have been using MobyMax because it is leveled, self-paced, and gives students variety. It has everything that I need: Reading ...

I suspect this independence comes in large part because Pendola has a very different background then most of the people who write financial news. One of the big recurring themes at West Coast Stat Views is just how insular and inbred the journalistic community has become. This is if anything a bigger problem for financial journalists. A majority of the voices you read in Forbes or Business Insider or Bloomberg have basically the same background, were educated at the same very small set of schools, have had similar career tracks, live In the same region (and often in the same neighborhoods), read the same publications, and frequently have a common social circle ...

Exploring new places like Nova Roma and giving characters like Amara and Selene different backgrounds is part of what makes developing the X-men Supreme fanfiction series so much fun and such a challenge. I dont want X-men Supreme to tell the same stories with the same characters. I want these characters to stand apart while still adhering to the core of who they are. These are characters that can only be accessed through X-men Supreme and I want to make them as memorable as possible. Amara Aquilla will be the latest, but she wont be the last. And as I develop these characters, its very important that people provide feedback so that I know Im developing them in all the right ways. I know I have a lot of reasons for requesting feedback, but this is an especially important reason because the strength of every X-men story comes from the characters. So please let me know Im doing these characters justice. Either post your feedback directly in the issue or contact me directly. I would love to ...

But back to art class. When I walked in yesterday to pick up Thing 4 and her friend, it struck me that this is the way I want my children interacting with other children. On this day, my daughter was sitting in a class of 17 children of many different ages. A couple were close to her age, and most were at least 3-4 years older. It was such a diverse group of kids. I appreciate that she has kids in her class who have been at this art thing longer...kids she can look up to. I appreciate that she has the opportunity to interact with children (and adults) of many ages. February 2, 2015. THE points race for sought-after college courses is set to be hotter than ever this year, as demand for third-level places hits a new high.. When the main deadline for CAO applications closed yesterday, 74,499 people had applied for a place, which is a record for this time of year.. It is up about 1,500 on the same time in 2014, reflecting the ongoing rise in school-leaver numbers and the general growth in demand for college places.. A degree or similar qualification is increasingly being seen as essential to meet the needs of the modern workplace.. Despite recent measures to cool the points race, the surge in applications for college is likely to trigger a rise in points needed to get on courses with increased competition for places this year.. Catering for such numbers will also sorely test our higher education system - which has been stretched with a 9pc cut in income, an 11pc cut in staffing but a 16pc increase in student numbers over recent years.. While 5.15pm yesterday ...

One of the most important tools for tracking the usage of files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons is BaGLAMa, which provides a summary of pageviews of Wikimedia pages that contain images from specific categories on Commons (see January 2012 report). It also provides for an easy way to compare the stats for any two months on record (see February 2012 report).. The tool has had trouble finishing its job in recent months, due to the stressed Toolserver. Magnus Manske, the developer behind BaGLAMa, has taken this as an occasion to review and rework his code, with the result that the tool can now be used again. He also re-calculated the stats for those earlier months where a record was missing, which resulted in an overestimation of the respective pageviews, since category membership was taken as of the time of running, not as of the month in question (which is difficult to implement and would drain even more sources from the Toolserver). The stats for December 2012 had been computed within a few days, ...
