Introduction. Modern History Essay Confucianism Identify the main beliefs of Confucianism Confucianism is the essential element in the common culture and was the philosophy of Kong Qui (Kung Chiu). He was known as Confucius and all his life he hoped for a major government post, but the rulers were not impressed by these hopes. Instead he became a wandering teacher by which he contributed to the mould of an entire culture. Although his teachings did posses some truth, he merely passed on existing wisdom as well as making original contributions to the culture. Confucius stressed many beliefs including belief in family, the role of women in society, education, Mandate of Heaven, Yin-Yang, the 5 relationships and Ancestor worship. The traditional Chinese family was a larger unit that the nuclear family of today that consisted of 3-4 generations all living in the same home. With a response from: Susan Blake (Bard College). Please join on us at Columbia Universitys Religion Department on FRIDAY, March 29th at 5:30 PM for his lecture entitled:. Confucian Approaches to Intergenerational Ethics. ABSTRACT: Since Confucianism is an intergenerational phenomenon, it should have unique insights into ethical issues surrounding our obligations to future generations. In the first part of this discussion, I examine two contemporary Confucian perspectives on intergenerational ethics. Proponents of Confucian Role Ethics have developed an interpretation of xiao 孝 as intergenerational reverence that binds the community together over time by reference to shared cultural models and evolving ethical values. The Chinese thinker Jiang Qing in turn argues for a political constitution in which the state depends not just on the will of presently existing citizens, but also serves to preserve and transmit the values of the past for the sake of future generations. While both ...

The word autonomy comes from the Greek autos-nomos meaning self-rule or self-determination. According to Kantian ethics, autonomy is based on the human capacity to direct ones life according to rational principles. He states, Everything in nature works in accordance with laws. Only a rational being has the capacity to act in accordance with the representation of laws, that is, in accordance with principles, or has a will. Since reason is required for the derivation of actions from laws, the will is nothing other than practical reason. (In Korsgaard, 2004). Rationality, in Kants view, is the means to autonomy. Autonomous people are considered as being ends in themselves in that they have the capacity to determine their own destiny, and as such must be respected. For John Stuart Mill, the concept of respect for autonomy involves the capacity to think, decide and act on the basis of such thought and decision freely and independently. Mill advocated the principle of autonomy (or the ...
zhong 中 is a very important philosophical concept in early Confucianism. Both the received ancient Confucian classics and the newly discovered ancient bamboo manuscripts tell us that adhering to the principle of zhong was an important charge that had been transmitted and inherited by early ancient Chinese political leaders from generation to generation. Confucius and his followers adopted the concept of zhong and further developed it into a sophisticated doctrine, which is usually called zhongdao 中道 (the Way of zhong) or zhongyong 中庸. Being a polysemous word, zhong has several different but philosophically related meanings. However, for a long time, people usually understood zhong in the sense of only one of its meanings, and zhongdao or zhongyong has been commonly interpreted as

Neo-Confucianism. Neo-Confucianism: The synthesis of Taoist cosmology and Buddhist spirituality around the core of Confucian concern with society and government, a synthesis which predominated in the intellectual and spiritual life of China, Korea, and Japan prior to the modern period.. History. 1) Confucianism: There were two interrelated facets in the tradition founded by Confucius (551-479 B.C.): government and proper social order were a major concern on the one hand, and on the other it presented a profound vision of the qualities and modes of conduct necessary to be a full and worthy human being. These were intimately linked, for in the Confucian view morality or humanity consisted primarily in the cultivation and conduct of proper social relationships, and the essence of government was morality. Confucius was Chinas first private educator. His role was to train young men for service in government and his most fundamental conviction was that the essen-tial preparation for such service must ...
A common argument is that the revival of Confucianism as Neo-Confucianism during the Song dynasty resulted in the decline of the status of women, and that in addition to promoting the seclusion of women and the cult of widow chastity, it also contributed to the development of footbinding.[80] According to Robert van Gulik, the prominent Song Confucian scholar Zhu Xi stressed the inferiority of women as well as the need to keep men and women strictly separate.[81] It was claimed by Lin Yutang among others, probably based on an oral tradition, that Zhu Xi also promoted footbinding in Fujian as a way of encouraging chastity among women, that by restricting their movement it would help keep men and women separate.[80] However, historian Patricia Ebrey suggests that this story might be fictitious.[82]. Some Confucian moralists in fact disapproved of the erotic associations of footbinding, and unbound women were also praised.[83] The Neo-Confucian Cheng Yi was said to be against footbinding and his ...
Many Chinese families use traditional Confucian values to teach their only child. Confucianism considers Ren (love and social responsibility) the core emotion that inspires other moral concepts in personal motivation. The child often receives too much love and has been highly mentally and physically restricted to devote themselves to a heavy load of schoolwork, considering that the economic future of the family depends on their success. Such a situation can directly lead to the overindulgence of the child thus reversing traditional Confucian values of Ren (仁) and filial piety (xiao 孝). There is also evidence that many young Chinese feel heavily burdened[8] and a huge sense of responsibility toward their parents, understanding that their success can have crucial consequences for their family.[9] Depending on specific family conditions and a childs outlook, this burden can lead to a diligent lifestyle by youngsters or to a more rebellious attitude to traditional codes or to not being able to ...
In contrast to the South China field site where issues of national migration and factory labour are core concerns, the North China field site happens to particularly well embody more traditional Chinese characteristics, but ones that nonetheless remain foundational to understanding contemporary Chinese society. The North Chinese field site is a single township with a population of approximately 30,000 people. The township features a mostly local population where the majority of people prefer to stay in the town and work wherever possible on local farmland, or in the towns shops or factories. As such, this fieldsite offers a particularly promising opportunity to understand how social media is affecting Chinese family life.. The fieldsite also happens to be in an area of particular religious and traditional significance, being strongly associated with Confucianism and Daoism.. Furthermore, the field site has still experienced a number of significant changes in recent years including new road ...
Presented by Aimee B. Biller, M.D., Ethics facilitator, CTSI, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, UPSOM. To achieve the goals of precision medicine it is imperative that human subjects research be inclusive and conducted in a way that inspires trust in all populations. Bioethical principles require vigilance both in the design of, and consent for, clinical trials in many special populations. Attendees will learn the moral reasoning behind current safeguards for certain populations as well as consider emerging bioethical issues in human subjects research. (subject matter: human participant research). ...
Biological testing in population-based research also raises important ethical considerations, for which the bioethical principles (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice), set out by Beauchamp and Childress, provide a framework.8 Beauchamp and Walters also identified four secondary principles: fidelity, confidentiality, utility and veracity.9 The WHO and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) applied these standards to guide the design of population-based surveys measuring HIV prevalence.10 First, respondents should be protected from any harm, which includes safeguarding respondent confidentiality. Second, respondents should participate in the benefits of the research. This is more complex because there may be no direct benefits for respondents in population-based surveys, but rather indirect societal benefits.11 12 Direct clinical benefits may occur where results are returned to respondents with advice and/or treatment. WHO/UNAIDS guidelines therefore ...
by John D. Lantos, MD. Pullman and Hodgkinson present a case that, it seems, should have been an easy one. A competent adult makes a simple request to discontinue a medical therapy. Further, it was a therapy that hed already tried so personal experience informed his preference to discontinue therapy. His request was repeated over time. He was determined to have adequate decisional capacity. So why did both the physicians and the bioethicists consider this to be a difficult case?. There are certain cases that lead to such dilemmas. They are cases in which emotions tug us in one direction and reason tugs in another. The best example of this type of situation is the difference between withholding a treatment and withdrawing the same treatment. Bioethical principles suggest that these two actions are ethically equivalent. Legal precedent shows that the law treats them as comparable actions. Yet both health professionals and families say that the two actions feel very different. Another example is ...

I dont think the term history should succeed state sponsored. Dynastic records were many things, but history, as understood in common Western parlance, they were not. They definitely fall outside primer definitions on the discipline written by the Teutonic vons (Ranke @ Humboldt), EH Carr and others.. For Mao, who spent a lot of sack time reading dynastic histories, they had bugger all to do with what took place and how, and everything to do with being cautionary tales on how to maintain power and shaft wannabee contenders for the top job. And as we know, the Great Helmsman topped his class in the maintenance and shafting department.. The conflicts between science and morals which still continue to arise despite the apparent hegemony of atheistic scientism over traditional Judeo-Christianity in the twentieth century reflect a basic contradiction in the metaphysical foundation of Western lives. As was set forth by Machiavelli, the contradiction inherent in Western ethics is that it is based on the simultaneous belief in both objectively valid moral truths and purely relative values of communal purpose. The achievements of twentieth century science have intensified these contradictions. Modern physics has put in question the validity of its own metaphysical basis, namely the belief in Natural Law, and modern biology has been unable to come to terms with the Cartesian dualism of body and soul. By contrast, Chinese lives are comparatively free of these contradictions, being founded on the philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism, to which the concepts of objectively valid truth or Natural Law are foreign. Recent developments in ...

Ancestor worship is a practice that occupies a supreme role in the religious and social life of Chinese society. Deeply rooted in the all-important virtue of filial piety, much of its associated rites have remained unchanged since Confucian times. Medical futility refers to diagnostic، treatment، and rehabilitation interventions that are unlikely to produce any positive outcome for patients. Doctors should beware of such actions due to their professional commitments. There are ambiguities in the definition of futility that have been the subject of many studies. In this paper، relevant literature was reviewed to find a definition for futility from the perspective of the four bioethical principles. Determining the futility of an action، whether it is the request of the patient، their family or service providers، is a highly sensitive matter that can lead to unethical decisions in the medical profession. Autonomy is a concept that is related to the diverse views on treatment objectives. In this paper we investigated the issues of physician and patient autonomy، and the differences between the values of the people involved. We have also discussed the concept of palliative care with an attempt to clarify the difference between this type of care

It is generally believed that America faces the double economic problem of controlling rising health care costs and efficiently allocating resources to satisfy needs. The ethical issue this creates is how to structure a system that addresses these problems fairly. The role, if any, of government is at the center of all such discussions. The issue is typically framed as one of social justice.. Justice involves fairness of treatment. Similar cases ought to be treated in similar ways. Social theorists identify four principles of justice: equality, need, contribution, and effort.(10) Disagreements about distribution of health care generally result from the different importance people ascribe to these four principles. Marxist theories, for example, emphasize the principle of need. Libertarian theories, in contrast, put greatest weight on contribution. Some theorists attempt to combine principles. Utilitarian theorists, for example, combine those principles that maximize private and public interests. ...
Purpose - This paper aims to discuss and demonstrate the synergies between the western concept of corporate social responsibility that is emerging from a background of individualism and market competition, and the traditional values of Chinese Confucianism, as applied to managerial practice. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is primarily theoretical in perspective. It also draws upon interview data derived from an in depth study of a large state-owned corporate group in China in order to demonstrate the model that is known as modern Confucian entrepreneurship. Findings - Adherence to Confucian values was demonstrated by both manager and employee interviewees. However, Chinese managers also need to reform some practices as they move into the international market place. As western managers, at the same time, increasingly seek to increase their social capital it is clear that Chinese and western managers can learn from each other. Research limitations/implications - The examples drawn upon in ...
The view of evil human nature is important in Chinese and western cultures. The thesis chooses evil human in St. Augustines thoughts and Hsun Tzus thoughts to compare and analyze evil in these two. St. Augustine, who is called the Saint of God, views the definition of evil, the resource of it, and salvations of it from the aspect of religious beliefs. He considers that evil is the privation of goodness and is not created by God. Because God is omnipotent (...) and all-good, it is impossible for God to create evil. Evil results from the free will of human beings themselves. If people want to attain their salvations, they should use their free will to choose good will and follow the goodness given by God. Hsun Tzu, one of Confucian scholars, puts forward evil human nature which is totally different from good human nature in Confucianism. He views the definition of evil, the source of it, and ways to change evil into good from the angle of social reality in Warring States Period. In Hsun Tzus ...

Add to basket. Chinese Anarchists were inspired by the ideas of Pierre Proudhon, Michael Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin and Elisée Reclus. Many were exposed to Anarchist ideas while they were students in Europe and Anarchist books were soon translated into Chinese and Esperanto, a popular language among Chinese students. They used the term Anarchist Communist interchangeable with the word Anarchist. The Chinese words for Anarchist-Communist (Wu-Zheng-Fu Gong-Chan) literally meant Without Government Common Production and in no way implied Bolshevism or Maoism. On the contrary, theirs were the Libertarian Socialist ideas of the First International which reflected the traditional Chinese Anarchistic teachings of Lao Tzu while Maoism reflected the authoritarian bureaucracy of Confucianism.. Like the word communism, the word collectivism also has a different literal meaning in Chinese than when it is commonly used in English. In Chinese, the word for a collective enterprise (Ji-ti Qi-ye) ...

My research straddles three disciplinary realms: demography, contemporary Chinese society and global health. I focus on a range of population and health issues in developing countries that intersect frontline public policy, such as the role of Chinas population control program in lowering fertility preferences and fertility rates in China, the social and behavioral determinants of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases and the methodological evaluation and implementation of network-based approaches to sample hard-to-reach and hidden populations such as those at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases as well as undocumented migrants. In one of our previous posts I have already introduced the limited set of designated national holidays celebrated throughout China with rest days included. At this point, let me also touch upon the concept of working weekends, which, inevitably, follow the days-off. For example, lets say that the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on a Thursday, in this case what will happen is that you will have both Thursday and Friday off, but as a pay-off (or punishment) you will have to work the following Sunday, and then the entire week after that. So, essentially, a six-day workweek. It is hard to say which option is the best, certainly the six-day working week cannot do much for your motivation and efficiency, but the rationale behind this is clear. The two days are meant for the people close enough to their hometowns to be able to return and see their parents. As you might already now, disappointing your parents is one of the biggest sins in Chinese society! Ok, besides the national holidays, there are three other

This is a post for discussion. My main thesis is that the largest threat to China is not social turmoil, but social decay. This idea is very preliminary, so this post is a work in progress. I welcome interested friends to participate in a constructive discussion. . 1. Are we worried about the wrong issues? Many people are now concerned about social conflicts, confrontations, mass incidents, etc. The reason why there is such a concern is fear of major social turmoil. However, I think the biggest threat to Chinese society may not be social turmoil, but social ...

I have to admit that I did not know of the Heart Mountain Resisters prior to working on this piece. I did know that there were those who refused to acknowledge loyalty to the U.S. in questionnaires given to internees, leading to their labeling as No No Boys, and even some who chose to be sent to live in Japan. I was to learn that this group has long had a controversial position within the Japanese American community, especially to those who elected to serve in the 442nd. In a classic case of the Confucian belief that the nail that sticks out gets hammered down, the fact that the 63 were attempting to take a patriotic stand against the interment was not appreciated by many. It was seen as making unnecessary waves for some, and even an insult to those who chose military service ...

Monday. First thing, the laundry. So no one spoke English. The sign said the laundry would be back tomorrow, but we needed it today. I kept wr iting the time down and the woman lowered the price by a little less than half. Then another woman came and saw the amount and shooed us out. I wrote down the original price and kept pointing to the clock. Finally the woman pointed to the 11 and to the 4. Then off to the Literary Garden. A long walk. On the way, we stopped at a small store to buy a rain jacket for me. Of course, for the 85th time I hadnt packed a rain jacket. The Literary Garden was a bit farther than I had thought, but it wasnt terribly hot, so the longer walk was fine. The Literary Garden is a large park where the first university in Vietnam was situated. It was a Confucian academy founded around 1100. There are four courtyards. The first one is mainly an entrance way. Through a gate is a large central pool with arches. On one side are steles with the names of the graduates. A group ...
