Concept maps were used in 21 schools of the MIUR Pilot Project Le parole della scienza with the participation of 6,000 Italian children to promote meaningful learning. The experience with concept maps described in this paper refers to scientific language teaching to 4-5 year old children in kindergarten. In 2003-2004 school year 56 children built concept maps in two different classes. Children produced a total of about 180 maps on their notebooks regarding manipulation experiences with the following objects: pumpkin, nest, papier-mâché, vintage, cement, water, orange, sand. Another significant aspect of the experience in Falconara Alta is the creation of concept maps with drawings, following manipulation and clinical conversation with the teacher. Concept maps proved useful because they stimulated and facilitated childrens reflection on experience and experience organization, making meanings and knowledge emerge in children. The comparison and sharing of learning favored the development of ...
Between seven and ten months, babies brains experience a huge cognitive stride and they develop something called object permanence. Basically, object permanence is the notion that even though something is not physically present, it still exists. Prior to this stage, babies could only conceptualize what was physically in front of them. Cover a four-month-olds favorite toy with a blanket, and they might look at you briefly but quickly move on to something else. Cover a nine-month-olds favorite toy with a blanket and they will likely try to pick up that blanket to retrieve their toy. How cool is this!?. I also get nerdy and excited when hearing about the development of separation anxiety because it is a sign of a healthy attachment relationship between parent and child. This is the time when babies start to think, Ok, that babysitter can feed me, bathe me, and put me to bed, but Id much prefer my mom so Im going to go ahead and cry to let everyone know.. As your baby begins to grasp this ...
Separation anxiety is common for infants between the ages of eight and fourteen months and occurs as infants begin to understand their own selfhood-or understand that they are separate persons from their primary caregiver. Infants oftentimes look for their caregivers to give them a sense of comfort and familiarity, which causes separation to become challenging.[34] Subsequently, the concept of object permanence emerges-which is when children learn that something still exists when it cannot be seen or heard, thus increasing their awareness of being separated from their caregiver. Consequently, during the developmental period where an infants sense self, incorporating object permanence as well, the child also begins to understand that they can in fact be separated from their primary caregiver. They see this separation as something final though, and dont yet understand that their caregiver will return causing fear and distress for the infant. It is when an individual (infant, child, or otherwise) ...
The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among pre-service science teachers conceptual knowledge of electric current, motivational beliefs, and self-regulation. One hundred and twenty-seven students (female = 107, male = 20) enrolled in the science education program of a public university in Ankara participated the study. A concept map technique was used to determine students conceptual knowledge level of electric current. To determine students motivational beliefs and self-regulation, a scale developed by Velayutham, Aldridge, and Fraser (2011) was first translated into Turkish and adapted to Turkish culture and then used as a measurement tool. Results showed that students motivational beliefs were positively associated with their self-regulation, and students task value, self-efficacy, and self-regulation were positively related with students conceptual knowledge of electric current. These results show that students motivational beliefs and self-regulation have

A concept map is a visual organizer that can enrich students understanding of a new concept. Using a graphic organizer, students think about the concept in several ways. Most concept map organizers engage students in answering questions such as, What is it? What is it like? What are some examples? Concept maps deepen understanding and comprehension.
A concept map can clarify even the most complicated ideas by presenting information in an easy-to-understand visual format. This nervous system concept map example shows the components that make up the human nervous system, along with their various roles. The present study analyses self-regulatory perspectives related to healthy eating behaviour. The research aims to examine the ideas that children and adolescents have about their own self-regulation and what aspects are important in order to resist food temptations. This study it is included in a major European research project named TEMPEST http-//tempestproject.eu/. The qualitative method concept mapping was used. To the sample composed by 100 individuals of both genders, aged between 12 and 17 years old, were applied the three stages of concept mapping process. The students belonged to different schools of districts of Leiria and Santarem, in Portugal. Two classes were selected with students between 12 and 14 years old, one with a low socio-economic status and other with a high socio-economic status. At the same time, two other classes were selected with students with ages between 14 and 17 years and with the same socio-economic status features. Socio-economic status was defined according to ...
Philosophical questions about the mind preoccupied much of Wittgensteins later writing, and his contribution to them is deep and wide-ranging, bearing upon philosophical issues concerning sense-experience, concept formation, perception, introspection, the science of psychology, aspect perception, the self, the understanding of rules, the relation between mind and brain, artificial intelligence, and many other subjects of current concern.
Research has found that declines in temporal information processing (TIP), the rate at which auditory information is processed, underlies the progressive loss of function across multiple cognitive systems in the elderly, including new learning, memory, perception, attention, thinking, motor control, problem solving, and concept formation. In a new study, scientists have found that elderly subjects who underwent temporal training improved not only the rate at which they processed auditory information, but also in other cognitive areas. The study is published in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. Our study showed for the first time significant benefits of temporal training on broad aspects of cognitive function in the elderly. The results were long-lasting, with effects confirmed 18 months after the training, says lead investigator Elzbieta Szelag, Professor, Head of Laboratory of Neuropsychology, Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology (www.nencki.gov.pl), and Warsaw ...

In proto-writing, used for inventories and the like, physical objects are represented by stylized or conventionalized pictures, or pictograms. For example, the pictorial Dongba symbols without Geba annotation cannot represent the Naxi language, but are used as a mnemonic for reciting oral literature.[1] Some systems also use ideograms, symbols denoting abstract concepts.. The term ideogram is often used to describe symbols of writing systems such as Egyptian hieroglyphs, Sumerian cuneiform and Chinese characters. However, these symbols are logograms, representing words or morphemes of a particular language rather than objects or concepts. In these writing systems, a variety of strategies were employed in the design of logographic symbols. Pictographic symbols depict the object referred to by the word, such as an icon of a bull denoting the Semitic word ʾālep ox. Some words denoting abstract concepts may be represented iconically, but most other words are represented using the rebus ...

I have a box of Christmas decorations that has sat unopened for over ten years. I have another box filled with holiday CDs and some two dozen videos. Ill load up my iPod with hours of joyful, nostalgic music and listen while I exercise and take my daily walks. Every evening, and on the more inclement afternoons, Ill watch a holiday movie and get lost in the story. What I cant do is make a connection between what I knew and whats happening now.. Its like object permanence in reverse - my disorder short circuits at the memory bank and the deficit costs me the fullness of the experience.. I cant keep a thing in mind for very long. When an experience is over, I can barely remember it, if at all. Medicine and therapy dont change this. Its a function of my schizophrenia, right in there with cognitive impairment and attention deficit, symptoms that sometimes get overlooked by the professionals.. Medicated, I may be more objective, but this phenomenon remains unaffected by the introduction of ...

Applications of Graph Transformations with Industrial Relevance Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2004, Volume 3062/2004, 90-105, DOI: 10.1007/978-3-540-25959-6_7 In this paper we discuss how tools for conceptual design in civil engineering can be developed using graph transformation specifications. These tools consist of three parts: (a) for elaborating specific conceptual knowledge (knowledge engineer), (b) for working out conceptual design results (architect), and (c) automatic consistency analyses which guarantee that design results are consistent with the underlying specific conceptual knowledge. For the realization of such tools we use a machinery based on graph transformations. In a traditional PROGRES tool specification the conceptual knowledge for a class of buildings is hard-wired within the specification. This is not appropriate for the experimentation platform approach we present in this paper, as objects and relations for conceptual knowledge are due to many changes, implied by ...

Whitehead and Nietzsche, indefatigable process philosophers, march to decidedly different philosophic drums. Yet at a striking junction, they cross paths. Both find human life and the temporal world of becoming plagued by an ultimate evil that is deeply involved with the nature of time -- in particular, with the essential passage of time and the temporal dimension of the past. Time threatens to devour human significance and the humanly good life.. But here the similarities end. At this crossroads, Whitehead and Nietzsche meet face to face, locked in a fundamental quarrel over the particular evil of times passage. For Whitehead, temporal process inevitably destroys worldly achievements. The temporal advance of the universe militates against any lasting permanence, against any realm of final, worldly being (PR 340/ 517). The destruction of a realm of permanence or being is precisely the evil of becoming and process, an evil which Whitehead refuses to accept as final. It must be overcome. Yet this ...

To test the image permanence of prints that are stored in an album, we use an accelerated testing method similar to how the image permanence of silver-halide photo papers are measured when stored in dark places. Print samples are printed with the optical density of 1.0 (each Bk, C, M,Y). The samples are kept in a certain environment of high temperature and 50% humidity. The rate of the decrease in the optical density and rate of yellow discoloration are recorded. The recorded results are then converted to the length of time when print image is kept in an environment of 23℃/ 50% humidity. ,Criteria for estimation of print longevity, The point where monochromatic/ reflective optical density shows loss of 30% (starting density of 1.0). ...
|p style=text-indent:20px;|A non-constant eco-epidemiological model with SIS-type infectious disease in prey is formulated and investigated, it is assumed that the disease is endemic in prey before the invasion of predator and that predation is more likely on infected prey than on the uninfected. Sufficient conditions for both permanence and extinction of the infected prey, and the necessary conditions for the permanence of the infected prey are established. It is shown that the predation preference to infected prey may even increase the possibility of disease endemic, and that the introduction of new resource for predator could be helpful for it to eradicate the infected prey. Numerical simulations have been performed to verify/extend our analytical results.|/p|

Grounded cognition approaches to conceptual representations postulate a close link between conceptual knowledge and the sensorimotor brain systems. The present fMRI study tested, whether a feature-specific representation of concepts, as previously demonstrated for nouns, can also be found for action- and sound-related verbs. Participants were presented with action- and soundrelated verbs along with pseudoverbs while performing a lexical decision task. Sound-related verbs activated auditory areas in the temporal cortex, whereas action-related verbs activated brain regions in the superior frontal gyrus and the cerebellum, albeit only at a more liberal threshold. This differential brain activation during conceptual verb processing partially overlapped with or was adjacent to brain regions activated during the functional localizers probing sound perception or action execution. Activity in brain areas involved in the processing of action information was parametrically modulated by ratings of action ...
Hi Kjetil, Ive tried to read the three mails you posted in the IRC [1] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Jan/0069.html [2] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Mar/0049.html [3] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Apr/0015.html but have some problems understanding the link between them Could you confirm that [1] and [2] are related to the same problem, that is linking SKOS concepts (or tags interpreted as SKOS concepts) to resources denoting real entities? For instance, you would like to say that abstract concepts mythesaurus:henryVIIIConcept are related (by means of some reference link) to concrete things like myontology:henryVIIIPerson where henryVIIIPerson is an instance of foaf:Person This is related (but not equivalent) to the problem I raised in [4] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Jun/0077.html which says that some SKOS concepts could be associated to classes (i.e. set of instances) in an ontology. For example ...
All students need to learn academic language, defined by Zwiers (2014) as the set of words, grammar, and discourse strategies used to decode and encode complex ideas, higher-order thinking processes, and abstract concepts. Academic language in English class can include literary terms (used in literary and nonliterary contexts), morphology concepts, and terms that describe language, common metaphors, folkloric expressions, and English etymology. This may also include allusions to other text and idioms (which can be especially challenging for English language learners (ELLs)). Most students do not acquire academic language naturally but instead learn it as a result of instruction in school (Gee, 1989). Teaching academic language in English studies, especially to ELLs and speakers of nonstandard dialects of English, while maintaining an appreciation for language diversity helps motivate an appreciation for language generally, which becomes necessary in the study of diverse works of literature, ...

Below is the abstract of the paper: Understanding sequential information is a fundamental task for artificial intelligence. Current neural networks attempt to learn spatial and temporal information as a whole, limited their abilities to represent large scale spatial representations over long-range sequences. Here, we introduce a new modeling strategy called Semi-Coupled Structure (SCS), which consists of deep neural networks that decouple the complex spatial and temporal concepts learning. Semi-Coupled Structure can learn to implicitly separate input information into independent parts and process these parts respectively. Experiments demonstrate that a Semi-Coupled Structure can successfully annotate the outline of an object in images sequentially and perform video action recognition. For sequence-to-sequence problems, a Semi-Coupled Structure can predict future meteorological radar echo images based on observed images. Taken together, our results demonstrate that a Semi-Coupled Structure has ...
A mental metaphor is a strategy that consists of completing the representation of a concept with structural components of a correlating concept. Three issues were addressed here to deepen our understanding of this mechanism: the use of mental metaphors between abstract concepts, the simultaneous activation of multiple mental metaphors and the importance of the focus of attention on the relevant dimensions of a mental metaphor. In two experiments, participants made temporal or valence judgments (with their left or right hand) on verbs with a negative or positive meaning and conjugated in the past or future form, allowing for the simultaneous activation of the
In the simplest case of concept learning, one of the classes is referred to as positive (examples belonging to the concept) and the other as negative. For a classification problem with several class values, a set of rules is constructed for each class. When rules for class cj are constructed, examples of this class are referred to as positive, and examples from all the other classes as negative.. The covering algorithm works as follows. We first construct a rule that correctly classifies some examples. We then remove the positive examples covered by the rule from the training set and repeat the process until no more examples remain.. Within this outer loop, different approaches can be taken to find individual rules. One approach is to heur-istically search the space of possible rules top-down, that is, from general to specific (in terms of examples covered, this means from rules covering many to rules covering fewer examples). To construct a single rule that classifies examples into class ci, we ...

The belief that mathematics, because it is abstract, because it is static and cold and gray, is detached from life, is a mistaken belief. Mathematics, even in its purest and most abstract estate, is not detached from life. It is just the ideal handling of the problems of life, as sculpture may idealize a human figure or as poetry or painting may idealize a figure or a scene. Mathematics is precisely the ideal handling of the problems of life, and the central ideas of the science, the great concepts about which its stately doctrines have been built up, are precisely the chief ideas with which life must always deal and which, as it tumbles and rolls about them through time and space, give it its interests and problems, and its order and rationality. That such is the case a few indications will suffice to show. The mathematical concepts of constant and variable are represented familiarly in life by the notions of fixedness and change. The concept of equation or that of an equational system, ...

There are various measures that assess fluid intelligence. The Cattell Culture Fair IQ test, the Raven Progressive Matrices (RPM), and the performance subscale of the WAIS are measures of Gf. The RPM[18] is one of the most commonly used measures of fluid abilities. It is a non-verbal multiple choice test. Participants have to complete a series of drawings by identifying relevant features based on the spatial organization of an array of objects, and choosing one object that matches one or more of the identified features.[19] This task assesses the ability to consider one or more relationships between mental representations or relational reasoning. Propositional analogies and semantic decision tasks are also used to assess relational reasoning.[20][21]. Standardized IQ tests such as those used in psychoeducational assessment also include tests of fluid intelligence. In the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities,[22] Gf is assessed by two tests: Concept Formation (Test 5) in the Standard ...

The thesis deals with the analysis of four serbian ABC books, published between 1965. and 2011. Those abc books were used in schools and prescribed by the state administration. Collected corpus is devided into thematic units: entnicity, gender and generational relashionships, and those are analysed from the aspects of critical discourse analysis, using the social actors approach and social semiotics in diachronic perspective. Analysis firstly deals with the visual elements and then with the verbal. Visual elements are analysed by dividing it on narrative or conceptual representations. Narrative representations are classified into action, speach or mental process, identified actors, their goals, vectors and accompaniment. Conceptual representations are usually analytical processes which relate participants in terms of a part-whole structure. Interaction between the viewer and depicted image can be realised by direct gaze at the viewer (demand). If there is an absence of gaze at the viewer it is ...

Unfortunately, legacy data structures tend to grow over time, and may contain many unrelated fields at the time of migration. We propose a method for ObjectIdentification by semi-automatically restructuring the legacy data structures. Issues involved include the selection of record fields of interest, the identification of procedures actually dealing with such fields, and the construction of coherent groups of fields and procedures into candidate classes. We explore the use of ClusterAnalysis and ConceptAnalysis for the purpose of object identification, and we illustrate their effect on a 100,000 lines of code COBOL ...
In the present study, 24 infants 14 to 16 months old (M=15.3 months) with a history of otitis media (OM) and tube placement were tested for categorical responding within a visual familiarization-discrimination paradigm (cf. Roberts & Jacob, 1991; Roberts, 1995a). Sixteen infants were, on average, 4.6 months post-tubes. At the time of testing, hearing was reported to be normal. During both the familiarization and testing phases, reiterant speech utterances (e.g., ti ti the sasasa, bo bo the sasasa, gu gu the sasasa, sasasa) were randomly presented contingent on infants looking at line drawings of selected animals. The inclusion of the article the in these utterances provides an important grammatical cue signaling an upcoming noun label. Using these same procedures, utterances, and animal stimuli, normal-hearing 15-month-olds without a reported history of OM had categorized successfully in two previous experiments. In contrast, the OM infants did not respond categorically under these ...

Embodied cognition accounts posit that concepts are grounded in our sensory and motor systems. An important challenge for these accounts is explaining how abstract concepts, which do not directly call

Thinking is a flow of associations. As we walk down the street, we may think absent-mindedly and entirely in images, pictures, smells, sounds, and such -- without recourse to language. However, when we do use language for thinking (and communicating), we gain access to abstract concepts that only language can manipulate, and we generate thoughts that can be communicated to other minds. A Picasso painting does not so much communicate as *cause* ideas. , Moreover, how about making decision? Does this also involves language? Decision-making involves ALL the knowledge available to the mind, whether linguistically associated or by non-verbal modalities. My husband and I have tried our best to help Ethan understand what it means to have a life threatening allergy. We take every opportunity that comes up to discuss his food allergy with him -- so that one day he can feel confident in his ability to advocate for himself. Trips to the grocery store usually include a game of whats that -- showing him peanuts / nuts in various forms and packages (i.e. peanuts with or without their shells on, different types of nuts, peanut butter, etc.) While we do this, Ill include questions like, what kind of nut is that?, do we eat nuts?, why dont we eat nuts? etc. When we watch TV and a character makes reference to peanuts or peanut butter, Ill ususally say something like, oh-oh, hes eating peanut butter... and hell usually shoot back, thats ok mommy, hes not allergic. We read books about food allergies. We have him practice with the Epipen trainer (hes very adept at giving mommy and daddy shots!). We talk about reading labels. Weve recently ...

Speculative Speculation on Values. Value of Values (VoV) is a blockchain-based art project. It aims to find out the real, economic value of human values through EEG (Electroencephalography, and biofeedback). VoV is an extension to the acclaimed Brain Factory project. In both, exhibition visitors (aka Brain workers) give - straight from their brain waves - a three-dimensional shape to abstract concepts, like FREEDOM, PEACE, MONEY, LOVE, POWER.. In VoV, the resulting shapes are brought into the context of an ethical realism, an objective representation of individual and collective hierarchy of values. While Brain Factory deals with a wide range of human abstractions, VoV only gives shape to those that could be considered as human values. The neuro-designed shapes, produced by individual visitors, become named and numbered digital 3D models: FREEDOM 0001, FREEDOM 0002… FREEDOM 000X. Each numbered item is an artwork registered on the Blockchain.. At the end of the process, the Brain Worker, the ...
One reason sport psychologists teach psychological skills is to enhance performance in sport; but the value of psychological skills for young athletes is questionable because of the qualitative and quantitative differences between children and adults in their understanding of abstract concepts such as mental skills. To teach these skills effectively to young athletes, sport psychologists need to appreciate what young athletes implicitly understand about such skills because maturational (e.g., cognitive, social) and environmental (e.g., coaches) factors can influence the progressive development of children and youth. In the present qualitative study, we explored young athletes (aged 10-15 years) understanding of four basic psychological skills: goal setting, mental imagery, self-talk, and relaxation. Young athletes (n= 118: 75 males and 43 females) completed an open-ended questionnaire to report their understanding of these four basic psychological skills. Compared with the older youth athletes, ...
Forest School actively develops childrens awareness of risk as well as their confidence in managing risk. One of the first activities children do at Forest School is to take an adult around the boundary of the site showing them all the things we need to be careful of. This exercise uses all their senses to think, see, feel, and share their perceptions of risk.. Therefore risk is not an abstract concept that children are being asked to understand, rather it is something they approach with their whole being and can consider as a direct experience before deciding what action to take. This is a very holistic approach to learning about risk that is applied throughout Forest School. As much of Forest School is child led this method of risk management is continually developed. Initially as children stay close to the adults tentatively exploring and seeking reassurance the adults are able to sensitively encourage consideration of the hazards, to facilitate opportunities for children to engage with and ...

Ancient Indian symbols beautifully express abstract concepts of living cultures. Visual symbols, like music, is an integral part of life in India. The logo of the laboratory is inspired by the Symbol (yantra) of goddess Saraswati. Goddess Saraswati is the Deity of Wisdom, Knowledge, Cognition and Music. The traditional symbol for goddess Saraswati encompasses everything associated to music. The movement, flow which is very intrinsic to music, is represented by the three strokes rhythmically overlaid on the geometry of this particular symbol. The web of lines which looks like triangles also looks like web of electrodes used in electroencephalogram (EEG) recording , used in our research work ...
Setting a table for meal or snack times is another practical life activity that will teach a variety of basic skills. Counting and sorting into sets are obvious skills, but there are more abstract concepts as well, including the use of patterns, and critical thinking. By involving preschool students in setting the table, you also give them a sense of inclusion as they learn to participate in regular family routines ...
Manchester Country Club opened in 1917 originally designed by two famous golf course designers from the early part of the 20th Century; Tom Bendelow and Deveroux Emmet.. Our golf course totals 6,167 challenging yards from the white markers, which are rated at 69.7. Manicured bunkers placed strategically about the fairways and greens demand concentration, skill and a fair amount of local knowledge to score well. Come play Manchester Country Club not only due to the great condition our golf course but for good times, good people and good fun.. The Manchester Country Club golf course is a fine example of what is called old New England design. To the knowledgeable golf buff, this means the natural character of the land has been used to advantage, not bulldozed away to fit an abstract concept. It means challenges that do not require great length or power, but can reward those assets when properly employed. It means greens that are generally small, contoured and well protected-often in subtle ways. ...
Self-esteem is an abstract concept, which has a composite nature. Available measurements of self-esteem usually measure different components of this global entity. For example, the Janis and Field Self-Esteem Inventory primarily measures anxiety in social situations, self-consciousness and feelings of personal worthlessness; three components of what its inventors called feelings of social adequacy. Some investigators like Rosenberg tried to devise a scale that can capture primarily the global entity of self-esteem. In the present study both scales of self-esteem have been used to better capture different aspects of self-esteem. Nonetheless, the high correlation between the two scales in the present study suggests that they measure overlapping aspects of self-esteem.. Before examining the results of the present study two potential concerns need to be addressed. Firstly, the control group was not randomly selected, and its size was small in comparison to the patient population. Furthermore, they ...
At the plays conclusion, a character dressed up as President Enrique Peña Nieto appeared but was grabbed by a towering Uncle Sam on stilts who quickly latched on the puppet strings.. Publicly staging a play like Uniformed Delinquency in Juárez is not the same as many other places, especially just across the Rio Grande in the United States, where forced disappearance is an abstract concept for most. But not too long ago in Juárez, events similar to the scenes depicted in Uniformed Delinquency really happened on a frequent basis and, in fact, on the very streets adjacent to the Plaza de Armas.. After the jarring play, relatives of the disappeared and their supporters marched down Avenida Juárez, chanting and displaying placards with messages like: What is the harvest of a country that plants bodies? Or, simply: If they were your sons?. Eyeballing the approaching crowd, one of the street singers who now enliven Avenida Juárez suddenly changed his tune and belted out an improvisation, ...
A phene is an individual genetically determined characteristic or trait which can be possessed by an organism, such as eye colour, height, behavior, tooth shape or any other observable characteristic. The term phene was evidently coined as an obvious parallel construct to gene. Phene is to Phenotype as Gene is to Genotype, and Similarly Phene is to Phenome as Gene is to Genome. More specifically, a Phene is an abstract concept describing a particular characteristic which can be possessed by an organism. Whereas Phenotype refers to a collection of Phenes possessed by a particular organism, and Phenome refers to the entire set of Phenes that exist within an organism or species. Genome wide association studies use phenes or traits (symptoms) to distinguish groups in the human population. These groups are then employed to identify associations with genetic alleles that are more common in the symptomatic group than in the asymptomatic control group. Allen et al. report that with respect to ...
Many believers said goodbye to their worldly friends, family and goods, such as houses and money in preparation for their ascension. This man, this believer, lost his faith. His deity failed him. Imagine the pain, the loss, the sense of utter abandonment. Now that is a role-playing opportunity! Perhaps it is time to remind clerics and the like that they wield powers at the whim of a deity. A deity that is not an abstract concept, but an in-the-flesh, bad attitude, demanding, fickle and slightly vain deity. RPG deities are not a distant, benevolent force (if they are in your campaign, you are missing a great opportunity to challenge your players.). Losing faith in a god that performs miracles daily is difficult, but not impossible. Gods often ask believers for sacrifices and sacrifice by its nature is a painful experience. Demanding bloody, beating hearts is a dull cliché in gaming. No, the sacrifice should be truly cruel and vicious. Asking the PC to disown a beloved relative or to let an ...
The concept of identity is used both (i) to distinguish a system as a particular material entity that is conserved as such in a given environment (token-identity: i.e., identity as permanence or endurance over time), and (ii) to relate a system with other members of a set (type-identity: i.e., identity as an equivalence relationship). Biological systems are characterized, in a minimal and universal sense, by a highly complex and dynamic, far-from-equilibrium organization of very diverse molecular components and transformation processes (i.e., genetically instructed cellular metabolisms) that maintain themselves in constant interaction with their corresponding environments, including other systems of similar nature. More precisely, all living entities depend on a deeply convoluted organization of molecules and processes (a naturalized von Neumann constructor architecture) that subsumes, in the form of current individuals (autonomous cells), a history of ecological and evolutionary interactions (across
http://www.scielo.br/pdf/reben/v64n6/v64... ). This fact reinforces the need for guidance from nurses regarding measures that minimize or avoid these situations.. Among the adjectives identified in the literature on care for ostomates, there are terms used as generic qualifiers, that is, they can be applied to different situations within the context of nursing practice (for example, present, absent, adequate and impaired), and terms for specific situations (such as in the period of permanence of the stoma - temporary, definitive, provisional and permanent; and the characteristic of the collection bag - transparent and opaque). Of these, only present and impaired are included in the ICNP® in the Time and Judgment axis, respectively. Note that ICNP® includes the term presence or absence in the Judgement axis, which leads to classifying the term absent as more restricted in relation to presence or absence. The term adequate, in turn, was classified as more ...
I once wrote that fascism is a resourceful parasite - that it seeks to exploit the green movement to further its cause of ethno-nationalism and naked racism. I think that this was a somewhat complacent description: now Im interested in the extent to which right-wing nationalism is not a bug in environmentalism but a feature.. For all that the history of countryside writing is a chronicle of change, much of its popular appeal lies in a false sense of permanence. The rustic woodcuts, the unvarying shades of green and brown, the persistence of visual, emotional and ideological countryside tropes - through these things, we feel we might find our way back to the light. The attachment to a fabled lost world is fundamental.. Like all mythologies, however, this one is shaped - or warped - by the values of the storyteller. For some, its the lost wild we long for: eagles on the crags, beavers in the rivers. For others its Morris dancers and Green Man charades; for still others its equitable land ...
Аuthors:. Yulia N. Hristova, Doctor of Economics, Chief Assistant Professor of Economics and Management of Commerce Dept. University of Economics - Varna. Abstract:. The market of new cars in Bulgaria is well developed, but relatively poorly studied. In the turbulent present-day reality, competition dynamics causes constant change in the markets positioning map that is built on an ambiguous set of rivals, metrics and sources of advantage. The paper assesses the sustainability of competitive positions of the five biggest new car importers in Bulgaria for the period of 2015-2019 and discusses the challenges they face. The methodological basis of the study includes the theoretical aspects of competitive positioning, benchmarking and competitive advantages of firms. Methods of descriptive analysis, financial ratio analysis, DuPont and SGR analysis are used to evaluate positions of enterprises by 11 key result indicators. The research results indicate a permanence in intermediaries positions in ...
Options, experts recommendations and identification of questions to be resolved.. Extracts from the main conclusions and recommendations made by the group of experts, who decided to focus on Clean Development Mechanism projects, follow.. 1. Projects must generate enough environmental and societal value for stakeholders - in particular the people living in project areas - to derive clear benefits in terms of food security and sustainability of development.. 2. At the project level, all carbon pools and all fluxes should be included in the verification and accounting. Only a holistic landscape-ecosystem approach has the potential to facilitate the understanding of carbon dynamics in projects as well as the much debated issues of carbon permanence, reversibility of sequestered carbon, leakage, baselines and the links between biomass and soil carbon storage.. 3. The accounting system has to be simple. Process, spatial and temporal consistency in the method used is most important. At the same time, ...
The second key property of a movement in space is its direction. During navigation in physical space, it is thought that the activity of grid cells, whose tuning functions peak at multiple locations following a sixfold periodicity, is key in coding movement direction. In a previous study (Constantinescu et al., 2016), it was observed that the BOLD signal in the mPFC as well as in other regions, including the entorhinal cortex, was modulated following a sixfold periodicity, typical of grid cells (Hafting et al., 2005; Doeller et al., 2010), when human participants processed morphing bird shapes varying continuously in their neck:legs ratio, therefore mimicking a movement in an artificial bidimensional bird space akin to real-world physical space. Although we could only sample eight movement directions with our design, we asked whether we could observe a similar modulation between our four discrete concepts that met both definitional criteria of human-like, high-level conceptual representations: ...
How much should we spend? Its an essential question for all funders and an especially complex one for endowed private foundations. Based on an upcoming issue brief of the same name, this webinar will help you revisit your foundations role as an investment steward. And it will provide ideas for helping your own board or family thoughtfully answer How much should we spend ...
Whenever I wonder how were doing with this whole parenting thing, I have to remind myself that theres a battle over the heart and soul of my children with RAD, and that the battle began well before our kids came to our home. The two children Im referencing here each spent 6 and 8 years of their lives without permanence. They had rotational caregivers, many of whom were not kind to them. The people who had any type of long term relationships with them are the ones that gave discipline-- often harshly-- and who gave them cold baths and stern words to get large groups of intellectually disabled people directions. Those people who came in and out of their lives for a few hours or days at a time-- missionary visitors and other humanitarian volunteers-- are the ones who gave them candies and hugs and kisses, who snuggled them and pushed them on swings, and who whispered and sang and were kind and sweet. The strangers in their lives before their adoptions were the ones they had fun with and who had ...

A new survey from the Pew Internet Project says that one third of US teenagers online have been cyberbullied. The kids say theyve experienced at least one of the following: having a private e-mail, IM or text messaging forwarded or posted where others could see it, the victim of an aggressive email, IM or text message, having a rumour spread about them online or having an embarrassing photograph posted online without permission. Without wishing to downplay these incidents, which can certainly be very damaging, they dont seem particularly different than the sort of bullying kids are subject to in school or elsewhere in the physical world. While there seems to be this desire to look at cyberbullying differently than offline bullying, the implication seems to be that technology is to blame, rather than the bullies. When permanent markers became widely available, allowing bullies to scrawl insults on their victims metal lockers with some permanence, where they singled out for scorn or special ...
If you consider potions to be spells, the answer would likely be generally no; I cant think of any potion used in the series that didnt have a definite (or at least fuzzy) time limit.. If you expand to other magical effects, no seems to be even more prevalent -- see gilliweed.. Its entirely likely that a skilled wizard (or a group of them) that devotes some time and effort to a spell could make it permanent (or nearly so). Surely the Floo Network requires more than just the Floo Powder, for example. Horcruxes and Lilys love protection spell are two other examples of (near-)permanence, and the magic used to animate paintings and photographs lasts for an exceedingly long time, as well.. It seems to me that the answer depends on the scope of what you consider spells, and how long is long enough to be permanent or forever.. ...

On Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at 1:30 pm in the Library of Congress James Madison Memorial Building, Andrew Davis (Chemist, Preservation Research and Testing Division, Library of Congress) will present the lecture: Centuries of Cellulose: Lessons Learned from the Molecular Analysis of Cellulose in Aged Paper Collections. In the mid-1900s, paper chemist William J. Barrow undertook an ambitious study of 1,000 books printed from the 16th through 20th centuries, meticulously measuring their chemical and physical properties and offering systematic predictions of paper aging and permanence. These same test books now reside in the Library of Congresss Center for the Librarys Analytical Scientific Samples. This talk will present results using advancements in scientific tools to reassess and measure Barrows same sample books anew. In particular, new micro-invasive tools provide the ability to quantify the degradation effects of aging, enabling new insights and mathematical methods for ...

Direct infection of your CD4 cells and your immune systems response to acute HIV infection leads to the death of many CD4 cells - casualties of the early battle. These cells act as essential partners with other immune system cells, protecting you from a variety of infections and illnesses. Serious infections that are usually seen in people with fully developed AIDS can occur during the acute infection stage due to this initial loss of CD4 cells.. Although many CD4 cells are killed as your immune system engages in its initial fight against HIV, other HIV-infected CD4 cells survive in a resting state. These cells do not produce new HIV particles but rather become reservoirs of HIV in your body, thereby establishing the permanence of the infection.. Treatment with HIV medications (e.g., antiretroviral therapy) does not rid your body of these HIV reservoirs, which is why the illness is currently incurable. Because it is the time when the permanent viral reservoir is established, researchers ...
Out of these buildings, the Ricreatorio Mario Marinoni is the most prominent. Built in 1921, it was donated by citizens to the Ospedale al Mare complex in order to make more cheerful the permanence of children in the Hospital, improving the care for children through education and art.. Teatro Marinoni was in the forefront of innovative healing procedures, namely by introducing the educative and entertainment aspect in a healthcare typology. In the 1970s decade, after strong lacking of funding the activities were strongly reduced. The Theatre building was closed in 1975 and a slow shutting-down process of the entire hospital would definitely end in 2006.. Many years of abandonment have taken its toll: the buildings have become strongly degraded and vandalized, apart from the strong influence of the elements. With no private financial interest in the abandoned property, no efforts were made to protect or secure the buildings.. The Ospedale al Mare was a great part of the Cultural heritage and it ...
This work takes as its starting point the human desire for permanence, a desire made acute by the inevitability of our passing. If photography itself is a manifestation of this desire, our attempt to arrest or still life, plastic plants and flowers are a low-rent corollary. Suspended mid bloom and scattered throughout graveyards and empty parlors, they offer the promise of perennial youth, an eternal flowering, life ever after. Fake flowers both immortalize and render static the natural world. As such, they articulate a crisis between beauty and horror, desire and loss, artificiality and the natural. Perhaps we are realizing Robert Smithsons frozen actuality, the hallucinatory disjunction where nothing is known but the impenetrable surfaces, where the artificial ingenuity of time allows no return to nature.. Bioposys are reconstituted artificial flowers and plants, mutant strains, improbable and permanent hybrids. The larger pieces attempt to envision a constellation of flower ...
