Introduction. Contents Title Page Number Mainframes 2 Midrange Computers 3 Personal Computers 4 Palmtops (Personal Digital Assistants) 5 Glossary Information Technology Coursework Mainframes Mainframes have been around for decades. They were the first systems to power businesses. They often took up extremely large spaces, were expensive to buy and required large amount of power and effort, using water-cooling or air conditioning systems to keep them at optimum temperature. Mainframes are multi-user systems. They allow many users, from hundreds to thousands to work at the same time on different tasks. Mainframes use the CISC instruction set. This stands for Complex Instruction Set Computer. It uses 18 different instruction formats, with system instructions being of variable length, 16bits, 32bits and 48bits. The instructions run directly between memory and the registers, and internally within the registers and the memory. Originally the x86 was had 64kb of RAM which was expandable to 640kb. As ...

We introduce an innovative method that uses personal digital assistants (PDAs) equipped with global positioning system (GPS) units in household surveys to select a probability-based sample and perform PDA-based interviews. Our approach uses PDAs with GPS to rapidly map all households in selected areas, choose a random sample, and navigate back to the sampled households to conduct an interview. We present recent field experience in two large-scale nationally representative household surveys to assess insecticide-treated bed net coverage as part of malaria control efforts in Africa. The successful application of this method resulted in statistically valid samples; quality-controlled data entry; and rapid aggregation, analyses, and availability of preliminary results within days of completing the field work. We propose this method as an alternative to the Expanded Program on Immunization cluster sample method when a fast, statistically valid survey is required in an environment with little census

0003] Many businesses have a very structured product item categorization. The clear categorization, presentation and in this case even numbering of product items makes such businesses an ideal use case for taking advantage of this concept and the associated technology offering. For a structured business like the Fast food industry, the order can simply be defined as an enumeration of one of the unique permutation of items offered along with the quantity of each item and possible customer customizations. In this case, the Fast Food vendor would offer a software component that would enable the customer to capture their orders without being physically present at the order fulfillment location using smart handheld device based technology (Android or IPhone device for example). The customer can place an order either at their home, office or even en route to the fast food location without any human to human conversation using a software component on their smart handheld device with no connectivity ...

Tracing just-in-time compilation is a technique used by virtual machines to optimize the execution of a program at runtime. This is done by recording a linear sequence of frequently executed operations, compiling them to native machine code and executing them. This is opposed to traditional just-in-time (JIT) compilers that work on a per-method basis. Just-in-time compilation is a technique to increase execution speed of programs by compiling parts of a program to machine code at runtime. One way to categorize different JIT compilers is by their compilation scope. Whereas method-based JIT compilers translate one method at a time to machine code, tracing JITs use frequently executed loops as their unit of compilation. Tracing JITs are based on the assumptions that programs spend most of their time in some loops of the program ("hot loops") and subsequent loop iterations often take similar paths. Virtual machines that have a tracing JIT are often mixed-mode execution environments, meaning that ...

While smartphones and other digital assistants have been found to help people with mild memory impairment, their use by those with greater impairment has been less successful. However, a training program developed at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care has been using the power of implicit memory to help impaired individuals master new skills.. The study involved 10 outpatients, aged 18 to 55 (average age 44), who had moderate-to-severe memory impairment, the result of non-neurodegenerative conditions including ruptured aneurysm, stroke, tumor, epilepsy, closed-head injury, or anoxia after a heart attack. They all reported difficulty in day-to-day functioning.. Participants were trained in the basic functions of either a smartphone or another personal digital assistant (PDA) device, using an errorless training method that tapped into their preserved implicit /procedural memory. In this method, cues are progressively faded in such a way as to ensure there is enough information to prompt the ...

Almost every project in rural development, disaster management and community awareness calls for field surveys for the collection of primary data. In low income country like Pakistan where capacity and administrative problems with the collection of data are common, surveys are often the only way to collect reliable data. Paper based data collection has been the standard method for decades but errors are frequent, storage costs are prohibitive, and the costs of double data entry are high. Recent advancement in communication technology has introduced the electronic methods of data collection in order to merge the process of data collection and data entry. Handheld devices such as personal digital assistants and smart phones are increasingly being used instead of paper and pencil methods of data collection.. In 2008 Pakistan was the worlds third fastest growing telecommunications market. Pakistans telecom infrastructure is improving dramatically with foreign and domestic investments into ...

In recent years, the increasing use of active matrix flat-panel displays and bio-medical imagers in commercial electronic products has drawn a significant attention to thin-film transistors (TFT) and technologies. TFTs on amorphous- and poly-silicon as well as newly emerging organic, transparent metal oxide and nano-composite semiconductor technologies are becoming increasingly common. For example, flat panel displays are finding widespread use in many products such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), camcorders, laptop personal computers (PCs), to name a few. The active matrix display is composed of a grid or matrix of picture elements called as "pixels". Thousands or millions of these pixels together create an image on the display, in which the TFTs act as switches to individually turn each pixel. More increasingly TFTs are starting to be used as analog circuit elements for rudimentary signal conditioning. Therefore, physically-based compact modeling of TFTs for circuit ...

The personal digital assistant (PDA) is a notebook-sized electronic device with a touch-sensitive screen that can display text or graphics and accept input using a stylus or by finger touch. The ability to program such devices means that they can be used to administer psychological performance measures, including both traditional computerised tests, and many of those normally given as pencil and paper tests. The latter are often difficult or impossible to program on conventional computer systems, at least without making significant modifications to the test. The small size of the device makes it suitable for use in those situations where the portability of pencil and paper tests is valuable, e.g. in testing patients on hospital wards. Data are automatically collected, avoiding the need for manual scoring of test sheets by the experimenter. A further advantage for many tests is that multiple test versions can be automatically generated, an important factor when some published tests have only one ...

With this program, participants could set goals, track their physical activity progress twice a day and get feedback on how well they were meeting their goals. After eight weeks, the researchers found that while participants assigned to the PDA group devoted approximately five hours each week to exercise, those in the control group spent only about two hours on physical activities-in other words, the PDA users were more than twice as active.. One surprise was the participants positive response to the programs persistence. The PDA users liked the three additional "reminder" beeps that went off if they failed to respond to the first one. In fact, almost half of them wound up responding to the PDA only after being beeped for the fourth time.. "The PDAs can really keep on you," King observed with wry humor. "We were surprised by that; we thought by the time they heard the fourth beep, they might find it annoying and not respond at all.". The study targeted people interested in health changes, but ...
Most people think that distracted driving is limited to driving while texting, but it takes many other forms as well-putting a CD in the stereo, trying to break up a fight in the backseat, or simply watching the scenery, rather than the road. The bulk of accidents involving distracted drivers, though, involve the use of handheld devices. According to a U.S. Department of Transportation website-www.distraction.gov-nearly 700,000 drivers may be texting, talking or looking up something on a handheld device at any given moment.. The numbers are even higher for people under the age of 30. One out of four teenage drivers admitted to sending or receiving a text message almost every time they get behind the wheel. Even worse, one in five said they routinely engage in lengthy text message exchanges while driving. A study found that approximately 10 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents involving teens also involved the use of a handheld device by one of the drivers.. Others startling ...

The market for medical applications for PDAs is set to explode. Millions of Palm OS devices have been sold, leading to Palms establishment as a potential de-facto standard for healthcare professionals. There are many and varied reasons for this. The number of medical applications written for and by medical professionals for Palm OS is growing at an exponential rate. This makes sense. Application developers want to create programs for market leading devices and at this point in time Palm PDAs are it. This will change soon with the revamping of Windows CE. I am sure that medical developers will give CE the attention it deserves given the rate at which CE devices are improving with a very rich feature set. Having said that, do not discount Psions EPOC handhelds. I have recently discovered what all the talk was about after purchasing a Psion Series 5. Its an excellent machine worthy of the title "handheld computer" for its built-in applications alone. I am not a physician. However, my experience, ...
A second argument for why people would be more rather than less healthy in an era of on-demand 3-D food printing is the massively granular physical tracking and biofeedback tools that could exist for each person. Smarthouse and smartclothing data collection through scanning and air, toilet, and unnoticeable blood stick diagnostics could be inputs to a continuously updating personal digital health model (e.g.; the future analog to Enteloss virtual patient or Archimedess virtual twin). A personal digital health model could be used to assess exactly which real-time nutritional adjustments are needed by an individual. An automated menu plan from the kitchen printer may be preferable for creating meals based on an individuals known preferences and reactions together with real-time needs. The portable personal digital health model could be permissioned into restaurant settings to similarly allow for customized meal synthesis ...
