Story by Alia Marsha, The Seattle Globalist. Imagine how hard it would be to access information and resources if you didnt have computer skills. Now imagine if, on top of that, you have just moved to a foreign country and were still learning the predominant language.. The goal for the Coalition for Refugees from Burmas program Nexus: Connecting Newcomers with Technology is to remove those barriers for recently-arrived refugee and immigrant communities.. The Coalition for Refugees from Burma (CRB) has secured a grant from the City of Seattle through the Technology Matching Fund (TMF) for the third time to continue their computer literacy programs. When the CRB began in 2009 there was a larger community of refugees and immigrants from Burma in the Seattle area. Since then, though, a lot of them have moved to more affordable cities. According to the Citys Office of Immigrants and Refugee Affairs, as of October 2015, there are 261 refugees from Burma in Washington state. Five years prior, in ...

STS Information Literacy Committee members selected tutorials that address one or several of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Science and Engineering/Technology and a few tutorials that address the more general Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. Omitted from this list are tutorials where the sole purpose is to demonstrate or instruct in the use of a specific resource-How to Search in PubMed, CINAHL, etc. Also omitted are resources in the format of guides, handouts, traditional web pages, and (most) TILT-based tutorials. Committee members began collecting information literacy tutorials that address the S/ET standards in the fall of 2007, searching the Web generally, as well as the web sites of college and university libraries. By its nature, this list will remain a work in progress. It is by no means exhaustive, nor is it intended to be. Our object is not to create a catalog of all SE/T tutorials, but to find and share useful examples. We encourage ...

Background: The unequal access, challenges and outcomes related to using technology have created the digital divide, which leads to health inequalities. The aim of this study was to apply the Ophelia (Optimizing Health Literacy and Access) process, a widely used systematic approach to whole of community co-design, to the digital context to generate solutions to improve health and equity outcomes. Methods: This was a mixed method study. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken at 3 health organizations in Victoria, Australia using the eHealth Literacy Questionnaire (eHLQ) as a needs assessment tool. Cluster analysis was conducted to identify subgroups with varying eHealth literacy needs. These data, combined with semi-structured interviews with clients, were used to generate vignettes representing different eHealth literacy profiles. The vignettes were presented at co-design workshops with clients and health professionals to generate solutions for digital health services improvement. Expert validation and
We conducted an experimental study to determine to what extent computer skill learners can benefit from generating self-explanation with the aid of different computer-based visualization technologies. Self-explanation was stimulated with dynamic visualization (Screencast), static visualization (Screenshot), or verbal instructions only, and compared to a control group with no self-explanation instructions. Sixty-two subjects were assigned to these four conditions for learning HTML fundamentals. Two quizzes were used to test learning outcomes. In comparison to the control condition, performance was best with dynamic visualization and static visualization. The self-explanation condition without visualization did not attain statistical significance in comparison to the control condition. Qualitative data collected from a learning experience survey regarding the subjects opinions about self-explanation prompts showed that subjects in different treatment groups gave similar responses about how they benefited
Carrie Donovan posted a message to the ili list, about a meeting (24 June at 5pm) to look at good questions to ask in the USAs National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) (in higher education) which could indicate engagement with information literacy. Although most readers of this blog wont be able to attend the meeting, I think its an interesting development (and contrasts sadly with the National Student Survey in the UK, which just has a question about satisfaction with library resources). Carrie Donovan wrote NSSE currently includes questions that gauge students involvement in undergraduate research, higher-order learning, and reflective learning activities, and has experimented with some questions about information literacy, but this new project will be the NSSEs first foray into a fully developed module that is dedicated to measuring information literacy education across the undergraduate curriculum. In preparation, NSSE researchers are hoping to gather input broadly from librarians ...
In response to the increasing call for information literacy instruction in colleges and universities, and the need to address this from the viewpoint of diverse disciplines, the STS Information Literacy Committee (STS-IL) decided to examine, review, and collect relevant science resources that can be used as part of information literacy instruction to science students and faculty. STS-IL chose the wiki format in clear-eyed recognition that no single person or committee can definitively capture the rapidly shifting list of excellent resources, and that those who avail themselves of this particular resource will almost inevitably ask the question, Why didnt they include X? Now you can add X yourself for the enlightenment of your colleagues! We welcome your additions. STS-IL developed this site and manages it. Please contact Committee Co-Chairs Betsy Hopkins and Elizabeth Bermanfor more information. ...
There were the 10 students in my class (100% turnout!) and Pam Bing, from CILASS (see previous entry), so as usual with this class we sat in a circle and Jacqui described her research and in particular, as we were focusing on questionnaires this week, on issues to do with questionnaire design. Jacqui had, as part of her work for her part time MBA, administered a questionnaire to level 3 course leaders at De Montfort University, asking them about how important they thought information literacy was, whether they taught and assessed it etc. Since it had emerged that the lecturers thought that it was pretty important, but teaching and assessing it were not so widely done, it had impacted information literacy policy in the university. She also mentioned some more recent developments: a couple of questionnaires to specific departments, and the fact that information literacy is now being included in the Universitys Programme Development Handbook (which people developing new courses are supposed to ...

One of the key concepts of the NCLB legislation was the improvement of student achievement in academics with the use of technology (NCLB, 2001). Ironically, the NCLB mandate of accountability has not provided the necessary resources for achieving its goals, and students with disabilities are, in fact, being left behind. Therefore, the law is intensifying the digital divide. The impact of legislative policies such as this on students with disabilities, while well intended, has led to barriers of access and equity that prevent teachers from effectively integrating the technology. The focus will be barriers to access and equity in types of special education technology, pedagogy and teacher training, and Universal Design for Learning. This paper will review relevant law, address implications of the digital divide on students with disabilities, and will conclude with recommendations for bridging the gap over the troubled waters of inequity and discrimination.. ...

What sort of information literacy sessions have you run during the last few months?. A lot of my regular work has shifted online - this has included one-to-one tutorials, synchronous sessions for anything from 5-100 students and asynchronous learning materials. Topics have largely been around searching for electronic information, evaluating information and referencing.. For tutorials, I have used whatever works - mostly Microsoft Teams, Blackboard Collaborate and Skype. For synchronous teaching sessions, I have mostly been using Blackboard Collaborate, which has worked really smoothly for the most part. I need to become more familiar with Teams for this.. Whats gone well with shifting to online teaching?. Gratitude! Many people have been really pleased (and surprised) that the library can continue to offer teaching and support and are grateful for everything that we can offer.. Interactive elements have largely gone well, but not always in the way I have expected! Finding ways of facilitating ...

Creating this atmosphere is comes from both class structure and personal attitude. Ive failed plenty of times in front of a class. When I started teaching information literacy a few years ago, I dropped canned searches for our instructions sessions. At the time it was done to increase the relevance of the material and engagement of the students. But what it has created is an atmosphere where failure is okay. Failure is a talking point. I welcome the unsuccessful search (unless its because I cant spell and now the class knows). It provides the opportunity to talk about why searches fail or dont get the desire results and how to adjust for additional searches. Failure in a search shows that the research process is messy and even libraries arent perfect. We try and fail just like them. Ive seen it successful break down barriers for students asking for help. If I got stuck, and they got stuck, they are more willing to ask for help. Failure equalizes the power relationship.. ...

OBJECTIVES: To explore general practitioners attitudes towards and use of a computer program for assessing genetic risk of cancer in primary care. DESIGN: Qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews and video recordings of simulated consultations. PARTICIPANTS: Purposive sample of 15 general practitioners covering a range of computer literacy, interest in genetics, age, and sex. INTERVENTIONS: Each doctor used the program in two consultations in which an actor played a woman concerned about her family history of cancer. Consultations were videotaped and followed by interviews with the video as a prompt to questioning. MAIN OUTCOME MESURESs: Use of computer program in the Consultation. RESULTS: The program was viewed as an appropriate application of information technology because of the complexity of cancer genetics and a sense of guideline chaos in primary care. Doctors found the program easy to use, but it often affected their control of the consultation. They needed to balance their desire to
In this article, we will present computer programing and see the actual way it may be applied to command the way your computer operates. Typically, computer newbies arent worried in controlling your computer, new computer users are commonly concerned in learning more about how it all works. Nonetheless they may be blown away to learn that Matlab仧冘 increases computer knowledge overall and it can help to decrease the fearfulness and intimidation related to utilizing a new computer.. Computer programing is developing a succession of commands which allow your computer to accomplish some measures. The people who system computer systems (known as computer Programers) utilize a programing language to talk with a computer. You might have often heard of a few of these dialects in the past such as Visible Basic, C , or Fortran. There are numerous other programing vocabulary and neither one is best compared to other. Just about all are competent at carrying out the identical tasks and accomplishing ...

We Are Iran is a seamlessly edited multi-voiced portrait of contemporary Iran, translated from Farsi, using that nations weblogs as its primary source. Iran has more web diarists than most countries, and in cyberspace many Iranians find a freedom to express opinions that is not available to them in print. Theirs is not the Iran of bearded ayatollahs and thuggish militias, but a country that has educated itself to the point where it finds the Islamist fundamentalists antiquated and laughable, where adult literacy (and computer literacy) is higher than in many European states, and where 70 per cent of the population is under thirty and keen to usher in a new Iran. Their voices - infused with Persian lyricism - are refreshing, utterly at odds with the grim vision of the country peddled by Western governments. They talk of their conflicts with the law, the condition of women, of repression and its subversion, the police and media, of singing and dancing, of snatched romance and nostalgia for lost ...

Bean Core, core developers of the BitBean Digital Currency and network, have launched new custom DNS servers - that makes it super easy for new users of the network - to stand up new nodes (Wallets).. Up until now, BitBean has relied on hard-coded nodes in its source code, to boot-strap new nodes joining the network. However, nodes come and go, and the original hard-coded nodes in the current release of the BitBean software - are no longer active on the network. This has left many new users joining the network, with only one option - a configuration file with current active nodes. The process of creating and knowing where to place a configuration file, is not always obvious for users of different platforms and different levels of computer literacy.. The new DNS seeder servers, allows new users to automatically join their BitBean nodes to the network. The need and confusion of a configuration file and knowing where to find other active nodes is no longer an issue.. In the last two weeks, ...

This study investigated the effects of data presentation and an educators level in the organizational hierarchy on the acceptance of educational program evaluation findings. Educational administrators, principals, teachers, and evaluators (n=210) read and rated a simulated evaluation report on a pilot computer literacy program. Four types of presentations were used: no data; percentage data; percentage and graphic data; and percentage graphic, and statistical inference data. Subjects rated the report, the fictitious evaluator, and the level of their agreement with four report recommendations. Responses were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance and a post hoc discriminant functioning analysis. Results indicated: (1) the method of data presentation had no effect on the subjects responses; (2) there was a statistically significant effect related to a subjects organizational position; and (3) the interaction between the presentation method and position variables was

Comunicar, 23 (24), 187-194. http://dx.doi.org/10.3916/C45-2015-20 The abstract reads Information Literacy is one of the dimensions of digital competence and, in todays information and media-based society, it should be a skill that everyone develops, especially secondary school teachers due to their influence on this crucial stage of student development. In this investigation we aim to determine the current level of information literacy of secondary school teachers in Spain. For this purpose we have designed a questionnaire (n=2,656) which is divided into two parts: the first asks questions related to belief and self-perception of information literacy indicators, and the second presents practical cases in which the teachers have to demonstrate their skills in information literacy. The results confirm that secondary school teachers beliefs show rather high ...

Whereas the first generation of studies focused only on physical and material Internet access, more recent research has considered the importance of skills and usage gaps. This study seeks to bring to light meaningful insights into first and second levels of the digital divide in the special case of Cuba, which is characterized by a very restricted media environment. Results reveal that in an admittedly socialist country where inequality is very present, increased access to the Internet might particularly benefit those who are already in privileged positions.. ...

It can work with vendors to build apps and platforms; a library of apps would be especially useful.. Students Information Literacy Skills. Candice Benjes-Small, Head, Information Literacy & Outreach, Radford University (RU), wondered if students information literacy skills improve over time. She and her colleagues analyzed citations in papers written by seniors and compared them with those in papers written by first-year students. In general, the first-year students used more popular and general sources, and seniors used a wider variety of sources. There was not much difference between the two groups in the use of quotations and paraphrasing. In papers written by first-year students, 37% of the cited sources could not be found. Some students were afraid to quote and cite because they were afraid of being accused of plagiarism. In departments where information literacy was rigidly enforced ...
While these four arguments are meant to lead to a solution to the digital divide, there are a couple other components that need to be considered. The first one is rural living versus suburban living. Rural areas used to have very minimal access to the Internet, for example. However, nowadays, power lines and satellites are used to increase the availability in these areas. Another component to keep in mind is disabilities. Some people may have the highest quality technologies, but a disability they have may keep them from using these technologies to their fullest extent.[96]. Using previous studies (Gamos, 2003; Nsengiyuma & Stork, 2005; Harwit, 2004 as cited in James), James asserts that in developing countries, internet use has taken place overwhelmingly among the upper-income, educated, and urban segments largely due to the high literacy rates of this sector of the population.[98]:58 As such, James suggests that part of the solution requires that developing countries first build up the ...

Twitter, Facebook, e-publishing, blogs, distance-learning and other social media raise some of the most divisive cultural questions of our time. Some see the technological breakthroughs we live with as hopeful and democratic new steps in education, information gathering, and human progress.
