The private sector also has significant incentives to improve CS education. Technology vendors hire computer science students, so developing a pool of strong candidates has an effect on the quality of their products. A recent cap on H1-B workers visas has created a shortage of labor for these companies. Furthermore, policymakers have recently turned their attention to technology. In the recent encryption debate, much confusion has been caused by a general lack of technical knowledge on the part of the public and lawmakers. Companies like Apple have had to make significant efforts to try to raise awareness of the need for encryption, gaining significant media attention in their recent battle with the FBI. Improved general computer knowledge would greatly aid in policy decisions and PR needs related to these companies. In light of these incentives, the private sector has been a leader in bolstering computer science education. Tech companies have also worked to improve computer literacy and ...
Access to computers and the Internet and the ability to use this technology is crucial for full participation in the countrys economic, political and social life.. People are using the Internet to find better prices, work from home, acquire new skills through distance learning, and make informed decisions about their healthcare.. In the 21st century, the ability to use technology means access to a wider range of jobs - and with the demise of many newspapers, access to job openings themselves.. Through Tech Horizons we strive to eliminate the digital divide where poor and disabled people lack access to the skills, knowledge and resources that come with the Internet and computer literacy.. Urgently needed items ...
According to the findings of the survey, the computer literacy among male is 30.7 percent which is higher than that of female (26.1%). Who invented the computer? is not a question with a simple answer. The real answer is that many inventors contributed to the history of computers and that a computer is a complex piece of machinery made up of many parts, each of which can be considered a separate invention. This series covers many of the major milestones in computer history (but not all of them) with a concentration on the history of personal home computers. ...

And this is an issue with a lot of education, so the problem wont go away just by throwing some courses into the curriculum, or by ranting sarcastically on the internet (especially as the educational rant has little or no chance to get back to the people it is about, since they dont have the know-how to get to it, as argued by the rant). Like many other things, computers are not intuitive for a lot of people, and neither is the culture around them (the lingo, the close interaction with the computer etc). Things that work: an approach which is designed around learners and their learning styles (for example, I learn a lot via analogy - the hardware is like the brain and the OS is like the nervous system - or by doing, so someone SHOWING me an ms-dos command panel + action and the equivalent in the normal environment did wonders for my understanding of GUI and what it is, etc), building on learners previous experiences/ knowledge, and an ability on the part of the expert to go out of her/ his ...

Significant differences in awareness of self-rated fat intake compared to others and intention to change were found between intervention and control at posttest. Tailored intervention was better appreciated, rated as more personally relevant, and had more subjective impact on opinion and intention to change than general nutrition information. Both groups read most of information and rated them attractive to read. Tailored program was more likely to be used again and rated information as more personally relevant and newer to them. No effect of computer literacy on perceived attractiveness of computer program; however, those with lower computer literacy also reported that the program was more difficult to use ...

Negative for all was the blind mass mailings from within the organisation.. ...
In 1991, the virus problem was sufficiently interesting to attract the large marketing companies. Symantec launched Norton Anti-Virus in December 1990, and Central Point launched CPAV in April 1991. This was soon followed by Xtree, Fifth Generation and a couple of others. Most of these companies were rebadging other companys programs (nearly all Israeli). The other big problem of 1991 was glut. In December 1990, there were about 200-300 viruses; by December 1991 there were 1,000 (there may have been even more written that year, because by February, we were counting 1,300).. Glut means lots of viruses, and this causes a number of unpleasant problems. In every program, there must be various limitations. In particular, a scanner has to store search strings in memory, and under DOS, there is only 640KB to use (and DOS, the network shell and the programs user interface might take half of that).. Another Glut problem, is that some scanners slow down in proportion to the number of viruses scanned ...

I had basic computer skills but yet I consulted certain friends who could assist me in refining my computer skills. It was only after a while that I realized that I needed to have a plan and schedule to achieve results in a time-bound manner. Hence I prepared a detailed plan and time table. It was a step by step guide that I gave myself to go about my research work. I also trained myself to become a persistent investigator rather than being frustrated by initial failures and giving up easily. In dealing with problems, I developed myself a method. First I would think about the problem and with the assistance of relevant information, arrive at a solution that seemed to me most effective and appropriate. I did not end my problem-solving exercise at this point. Instead, I then thought about what other possible solutions could be. I also thought about the negative aspects and possible errors in the solution of my choice. Only after this process is completed did I finalize my solution option. I was ...
In their introduction to the edited collected Race After the Internet, Lisa Nakamura and Peter A. Chow-White trace the emergence of multiple digital divides in the wake of what they call at different moments the biotechnical turn, the technobiological turn, and the techno-genetic turn-a cultural, institutional, and scholarly transformation that privileges the technological and specifically the digital over other forms of knowledge, mediation, and interaction(4). They open the collection by declaring the importance of an expansion of critical race scholarship that addresses the conceptual and experiential imbrication of race and the digital. Turning to the African American Lives series produced for PBS by Henry Louis Gates as a paradigmatic example, Nakamura and Chow-White argue that Gates investment in digitally distributed genealogical inquiries about racial identity highlights the ways in which race has itself become a digital medium, a distinctive set of informatic codes, networked ...

When attempting to tutor seniors in computer literacy, one is well advised to first assess the clients awareness. By awareness, I mean a general tendency to look at the environment and to see what is there. We are all creatures of habit who work with observed patterns to reduce our mental workload. For instance, every day I call my dog and say, Lets go check the mail. He bounces around and happily walks with me to our communal mailbox. Of course he has no idea of what mail is or why one should check it. His knowledge of English is limited, but he does recognize the pattern of sounds in Lets go check the mail, and he associates it with a short walk and sniffing exercise. People are the same way.. Many times I have watched new clients do simple tasks in their normal way without my help. I do this to try to understand their current level of expertise and awareness. Often they will have a pattern of clicks and mouse moves that gets a job done, but if I interrupt the flow of their clicks, they ...

Many replies asked if I could convert my code so it would take advantage of one of these clusters. Unfortunately the steps in the simulation are all very sequential; each takes information from the previous step and generates information for the next step. Even if they could be run in parallel, I dont have the computer skills to rewrite the code to take advantage of this. But I realized that I can quite easily do multiple slow runs with small sub-genomes instead of one run with a big genome, and then manually combine the outputs. For my present goals I only need to get data for a few slow runs with big genomes, so doing this manually wouldnt be a big deal (much easier than learning how to automate it). The only concern is edge effects, but I think these will be minor and I can run a test to confirm this ...

Story by Alia Marsha, The Seattle Globalist. Imagine how hard it would be to access information and resources if you didnt have computer skills. Now imagine if, on top of that, you have just moved to a foreign country and were still learning the predominant language.. The goal for the Coalition for Refugees from Burmas program Nexus: Connecting Newcomers with Technology is to remove those barriers for recently-arrived refugee and immigrant communities.. The Coalition for Refugees from Burma (CRB) has secured a grant from the City of Seattle through the Technology Matching Fund (TMF) for the third time to continue their computer literacy programs. When the CRB began in 2009 there was a larger community of refugees and immigrants from Burma in the Seattle area. Since then, though, a lot of them have moved to more affordable cities. According to the Citys Office of Immigrants and Refugee Affairs, as of October 2015, there are 261 refugees from Burma in Washington state. Five years prior, in ...

STS Information Literacy Committee members selected tutorials that address one or several of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Science and Engineering/Technology and a few tutorials that address the more general Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. Omitted from this list are tutorials where the sole purpose is to demonstrate or instruct in the use of a specific resource-How to Search in PubMed, CINAHL, etc. Also omitted are resources in the format of guides, handouts, traditional web pages, and (most) TILT-based tutorials. Committee members began collecting information literacy tutorials that address the S/ET standards in the fall of 2007, searching the Web generally, as well as the web sites of college and university libraries. By its nature, this list will remain a work in progress. It is by no means exhaustive, nor is it intended to be. Our object is not to create a catalog of all SE/T tutorials, but to find and share useful examples. We encourage ...
Background: The unequal access, challenges and outcomes related to using technology have created the digital divide, which leads to health inequalities. The aim of this study was to apply the Ophelia (Optimizing Health Literacy and Access) process, a widely used systematic approach to whole of community co-design, to the digital context to generate solutions to improve health and equity outcomes. Methods: This was a mixed method study. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken at 3 health organizations in Victoria, Australia using the eHealth Literacy Questionnaire (eHLQ) as a needs assessment tool. Cluster analysis was conducted to identify subgroups with varying eHealth literacy needs. These data, combined with semi-structured interviews with clients, were used to generate vignettes representing different eHealth literacy profiles. The vignettes were presented at co-design workshops with clients and health professionals to generate solutions for digital health services improvement. Expert validation and
We conducted an experimental study to determine to what extent computer skill learners can benefit from generating self-explanation with the aid of different computer-based visualization technologies. Self-explanation was stimulated with dynamic visualization (Screencast), static visualization (Screenshot), or verbal instructions only, and compared to a control group with no self-explanation instructions. Sixty-two subjects were assigned to these four conditions for learning HTML fundamentals. Two quizzes were used to test learning outcomes. In comparison to the control condition, performance was best with dynamic visualization and static visualization. The self-explanation condition without visualization did not attain statistical significance in comparison to the control condition. Qualitative data collected from a learning experience survey regarding the subjects opinions about self-explanation prompts showed that subjects in different treatment groups gave similar responses about how they benefited
Carrie Donovan posted a message to the ili list, about a meeting (24 June at 5pm) to look at good questions to ask in the USAs National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) (in higher education) which could indicate engagement with information literacy. Although most readers of this blog wont be able to attend the meeting, I think its an interesting development (and contrasts sadly with the National Student Survey in the UK, which just has a question about satisfaction with library resources). Carrie Donovan wrote NSSE currently includes questions that gauge students involvement in undergraduate research, higher-order learning, and reflective learning activities, and has experimented with some questions about information literacy, but this new project will be the NSSEs first foray into a fully developed module that is dedicated to measuring information literacy education across the undergraduate curriculum. In preparation, NSSE researchers are hoping to gather input broadly from librarians ...
In response to the increasing call for information literacy instruction in colleges and universities, and the need to address this from the viewpoint of diverse disciplines, the STS Information Literacy Committee (STS-IL) decided to examine, review, and collect relevant science resources that can be used as part of information literacy instruction to science students and faculty. STS-IL chose the wiki format in clear-eyed recognition that no single person or committee can definitively capture the rapidly shifting list of excellent resources, and that those who avail themselves of this particular resource will almost inevitably ask the question, Why didnt they include X? Now you can add X yourself for the enlightenment of your colleagues! We welcome your additions. STS-IL developed this site and manages it. Please contact Committee Co-Chairs Peter Larsen and Roxanne Bogucka for more information. ...
There were the 10 students in my class (100% turnout!) and Pam Bing, from CILASS (see previous entry), so as usual with this class we sat in a circle and Jacqui described her research and in particular, as we were focusing on questionnaires this week, on issues to do with questionnaire design. Jacqui had, as part of her work for her part time MBA, administered a questionnaire to level 3 course leaders at De Montfort University, asking them about how important they thought information literacy was, whether they taught and assessed it etc. Since it had emerged that the lecturers thought that it was pretty important, but teaching and assessing it were not so widely done, it had impacted information literacy policy in the university. She also mentioned some more recent developments: a couple of questionnaires to specific departments, and the fact that information literacy is now being included in the Universitys Programme Development Handbook (which people developing new courses are supposed to ...

One of the key concepts of the NCLB legislation was the improvement of student achievement in academics with the use of technology (NCLB, 2001). Ironically, the NCLB mandate of accountability has not provided the necessary resources for achieving its goals, and students with disabilities are, in fact, being left behind. Therefore, the law is intensifying the digital divide. The impact of legislative policies such as this on students with disabilities, while well intended, has led to barriers of access and equity that prevent teachers from effectively integrating the technology. The focus will be barriers to access and equity in types of special education technology, pedagogy and teacher training, and Universal Design for Learning. This paper will review relevant law, address implications of the digital divide on students with disabilities, and will conclude with recommendations for bridging the gap over the troubled waters of inequity and discrimination.. ...

25 September 2020, London For the fifth year in a row the mobile industry has increased its impact across all 17 SDGs enabling essential services for people and businesses. 2019 was the industrys most impactful year as the industry increased its SDG impact score by 4.7 percentage points. With over half of the worlds population in lockdown this year, the worlds dependence on digital technology to access essential communications has become acutely evident.. The rapid expansion of mobile coverage in recent years resulted in 5.1 billion individuals using a mobile phone and 3.8 billion using mobile internet. Compared to 2015 levels, this represents an increase of 600 million and 1.1 billion people respectively. We are making headway in closing the digital divide through robust investment made by the mobile industry.. Despite these efforts, there is more to do. The UN is calling the next ten years, the Decade of Action. Mobile technology is fast becoming a fundamental part of our lives, yet 600 ...

Creating this atmosphere is comes from both class structure and personal attitude. Ive failed plenty of times in front of a class. When I started teaching information literacy a few years ago, I dropped canned searches for our instructions sessions. At the time it was done to increase the relevance of the material and engagement of the students. But what it has created is an atmosphere where failure is okay. Failure is a talking point. I welcome the unsuccessful search (unless its because I cant spell and now the class knows). It provides the opportunity to talk about why searches fail or dont get the desire results and how to adjust for additional searches. Failure in a search shows that the research process is messy and even libraries arent perfect. We try and fail just like them. Ive seen it successful break down barriers for students asking for help. If I got stuck, and they got stuck, they are more willing to ask for help. Failure equalizes the power relationship.. ...

OBJECTIVES: To explore general practitioners attitudes towards and use of a computer program for assessing genetic risk of cancer in primary care. DESIGN: Qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews and video recordings of simulated consultations. Up until now, BitBean has relied on hard-coded nodes in its source code, to boot-strap new nodes joining the network. However, nodes come and go, and the original hard-coded nodes in the current release of the BitBean software - are no longer active on the network. This has left many new users joining the network, with only one option - a configuration file with current active nodes. The need and confusion of a configuration file and knowing where to find other active nodes is no longer an issue.. In the last two weeks, ...
