Todays computer games have thousands of agents moving at the same time in areas inhabited by a large number of obstacles. In such an environment it is important to be able to calculate multiple shortest paths concurrently in an efficient manner. The highly parallel nature of the graphics processor suits this scenario perfectly. We have implemented a graphics processor based version of the A* path finding algorithm together with three algorithmic improvements that allow it to work faster and on bigger maps. The first makes use of pre-calculated paths for commonly used paths. The second use multiple threads that work concurrently on the same path. The third improvement makes use of a scheme that hierarchically breaks down large search spaces. In the latter the algorithm first calculates the path on a high level abstraction of the map, lowering the amount of nodes that needs to be visited. In this thesis, we investigate two problems in computer vision and graphics that rely on the same tool, namely energy optimization with graph cuts. In the area of computer graphics, we address the problem of generating artificial classic mosaics, still and animated. The main purpose of artificial mosaics is to help a user to create digital art. First we reformulate our previous static mosaic work in a more principled global optimization framework. VA Linux Systems, Nvidia and SGI are to bring workstation-class graphics to Linux through the joint development of an OpenGL 1.2-based 2D and 3D graphics acceleration sub-system. Long-time collaborators Nvidia and SGI will provide Nvidias GeForce 256 3D graphics chip -- presumably in its pro-oriented Quadro form -- and the first official version of OpenGL 1.2 on Linux. OpenGL, while a de facto standard 3D rendering technology, isnt open source, and so has only made an appearance on Linux in the form of technologies such as Mesa, which essentially provide an OpenGL-style API. And they work very well -- the only snag is that, not being official ports of the SGI technology, they cant claim to be 100 per cent OpenGL compatible, primarily because they cant be put through SGIs compliance testing procedure. Thats true even for machines with NVIDIA ION graphics. Because Adobe Flash doesnt currently take advantage of the GPU. Instead it relies on the CPU, and the Intel Atom processor just isnt up to these tasks. At the same time we continually complain about meetings that bog down our productivity. Is communication really a quantity issue? Maybe we should be investing in quality of communication? Boa Constructor has some code in their UML view that I contributed to do this using topological sorts. I think that this direction is a good one for laptops, to have both incredible battery life and enough power to get stuff done. Especially with both Intel and AMD working on SoCs that integrate the graphics onto the processor, I really hope they continue to work on this sort of hybrid graphics; it is probably more important for Intel chips since they have repeatedly shown that they could care less about graphics performance. This version of the characters performance allows the director and animators to discuss how the character will play his/her role in each scene. However, blocked-in animation is also quite time consuming to construct, with short scenes requiring many hours of preparation between presentations. In this paper, we present a puppeteering interface for creating blocked-in motion for characters and various simulation effects more quickly than is possible in a keyframing interface. The animator manipulates one of a set of tracked objects in a motion capture system to control a few degrees of freedom of the character on each take. We explore the design space for the 3D puppeteering interface with a set of seven professional animators using a "think-aloud" protocol.
