The key new findings from the present study include the following. (1) Healthy but sedentary seniors exhibited substantially greater LV stiffness compared with healthy, sedentary young control subjects, providing evidence that cardiac compliance decreases with aging. (2) Ventricles of Masters endurance athletes were much more compliant than those of the age-matched sedentary subjects and virtually identical to those of the young control subjects. Thus, prolonged and sustained endurance training seems to be an effective means of preserving cardiac compliance with aging.. Aging is associated with numerous changes and adaptations in the cardiovascular system. Vascular and ventricular wall thickness increase, whereas arterial compliance, endothelial function, and ventricular contractility decline.6,8,9 Each of these changes is related to an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. There is controversy, however, about to what extent these adaptations are of intrinsic nature, ie, part of a ...
Objective: To investigate the association between peripherally measured arterial compliance and cardiovascular and total mortality in an elderly cohort.. Background: There is limited evidence that systemic indices of elasticity and stiffness in the carotid and femoral arteries can predict incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. Little is known about the associations between systemic arterial compliance and CVD events.. Methods: Between 1997 and 1999, 849 community dwelling participants in the Rancho Bernardo Study (mean age 74, 39% male, 4.2% with type 2 diabetes) underwent noninvasive pulse wave measurements. Systemic and brachial artery compliance were estimated using the PulseMetric device applying an algorithm previously validated by angiography. Data on cardiovascular risk factors and fasting blood samples were obtained at the same visit as the compliance measurements, as well as at a follow-up visit conducted within one year. CVD and overall mortality were recorded through January ...
Healthy seniors (n = 102, ,64 years of age) were recruited from pre-identified populations, screened for lifelong patterns of exercise training, and stratified into 1 of 4 groups based on their lifelong histories of endurance exercise training. "Sedentary" subjects (n = 27) exercised no more than once per week during the previous 25 years; "casual" exercisers (n = 25) engaged in 2 to 3 sessions per week during the previous 25 years; "committed" exercisers (n = 25) performed 4 to 5 sessions per week during the previous 25 years; and "competitive" Masters level athletes (n = 25) trained 6 to 7 times per week and participated in regular competitions sponsored by U.S. Masters organizations during the previous 25 years. Exercise sessions were defined as periods of dynamic activity lasting at least 30 minutes.. Subjects were recruited primarily from the CCLS (Cooper Center Longitudinal Study) (5), a cohort of more than 80,000 individuals in whom physical activity and CV risk factors have been ...
title: Differential Impact of Net Atrioventricular Compliance on Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Mitral Stenosis According to Cardiac Rhythm, doi: 10.1016/j.echo.2017.01.014, category: Article
Recent epidemiological studies have shown that pulse pressure is a stronger predictor of the risks of cardiovascular disease compared with diastolic or mean blood pressure in those over 50 yr of age (16-18). Pulse pressure arises as a consequence of blood flow ejected by the left ventricle and a buffering or cushioning function of the entire arterial tree, that is, systemic arterial compliance. Thus systemic arterial compliance or its reciprocal, arterial stiffness, is, in essence, characterized by the relationship between pulse pressure and stroke volume. In the present study, we used the ratio of pulse pressure to stroke volume as an index of static systemic arterial stiffness, according to previous reports (9, 12, 43). Since animal studies have shown that the proximal aorta accounts for 60-80% of static systemic arterial compliance (27, 43), this index is considered to reflect primarily central aortic stiffening. Indeed, several recent studies have shown that the ratio of pulse pressure to ...
To the editor: In the March 1999 issue of The American Journal of Physiology, Hardt et al. (1) presented an elegant experimental study on the validation of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in assessing changes in the pressure-diameter relationship in the aorta of dogs. They compared measurements of abdominal aortic diameters derived from IVUS with those obtained at the same site using implanted sonomicrometers. They then calculated the "arterial compliance as the ratio of systolic to diastolic amplitude of the diameter to the amplitude of the pressure" (1). The unit used to express "compliance" is micrometers per millimeter of mercury (μm/mmHg).. The classic definition by Spencer and Denison (3) of compliance (C) is the change in arterial blood volume (ΔV) due to a given change in arterial blood pressure (ΔP), i.e., C = ΔV/ΔP. This definition is still accepted (and therefore, C is expressed in μm3/mmHg or m3/kPa).. In clinical practice, cross-sectional compliance (CC) is utilized, assuming ...
Degenerative aortic stenosis (AS), a disease of the elderly, frequently coexists with concomitant diseases, including type 2 diabetes (T2DM) which amplifies the cardiovascular (CV) risk. T2DM affects left ventricular (LV) structure and function via hemodynamic and metabolic factors. In concentric LV geometry, typical for AS, indices of LV midwall mechanics are better estimates of LV function than ejection fraction (EF). Effects of T2DM coexisting with AS on circumferential LV midwall systolic function and large artery properties have not been reported so far. Our aim was to compare characteristics of AS patients with and without T2DM, with a focus on LV midwall systolic function and arterial compliance. Medical records of 130 electively hospitalized patients with moderate or severe isolated degenerative AS were retrospectively analyzed. Exclusion criteria included clinical instability, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease and relevant non-cardiac diseases. From in-hospital echocardiography and
Chest wall compliance is the opposite of elasticity, and elasticity is the tendency of lung tissue to return to its original (or relaxed) position after an applied force has been removed. Compliance is essentially the ability of the lung tissue to "absorb" the same applied force, which generally results from a change in intrathoracic pressure.. Chest wall compliance can be calculated by this formula:. Compliance = Δ V / Δ P. Where change in volume is in liters and change in pressure is in cm H20.. There are two different types of compliance: static and dynamic. Static compliance is a measured during plateau (rather than peak inspiratory) pressure. PEEP should be subtracted from plateau inspiratory pressure in making this calculation. Because the pressure-volume curve (see below) is not linear during inspiration and expiration due to changes in the lung tissue, Dynamic compliance varies and is a calculated with a measurement of tidal volume at a given intrathoracic pressure during which there ...
Title: Possible Links of Age Related Hypertension and Evolution Imposed Features of Heart and Aorta. VOLUME: 1 ISSUE: 3. Author(s):Sven Kurbel. Affiliation:Osijek Medical Faculty, J Huttlera 4, 31000 Osijek, Croatia.. Keywords:Hypertension, diastolic aortic pressure, subendocardial muscle, Ageing, Heart and Aorta. Abstract: The left ventricle thickness is a limiting factor of optimal heart size and strength. Due to disappearance of all the features compromising left ventricular compliance, mammalian heart has decreased vascular density and coronary vessel diameter and it requires sufficient diastolic aortic pressure for the left ventricle perfusion. Atrial muscle and the right ventricle are perfused during the entire heart cycle. The systolic pressure in the left ventricle forces blood vessels in the muscle wall to collapse, particularly in the subendocardial muscle layer. This makes the most active part of the heart prone to hypoxia. Optimal perfusion of the left ventricle wall requires ...
Results: CHU significantly increased body mass (P , 0.001) compared with age-matched control rats but was without effect on relative cardiac mass. For incremental increases in left ventricular balloon volume, diastolic pressure was preserved. However, systolic pressure was significantly greater following CHU for balloon volume = 50 μl (P , 0.01) and up to 200 μl (P , 0.05). For higher balloon volumes systolic pressure was not significantly different from control. Developed pressures were correspondingly increased relative to controls for balloon volumes up to 250 μl (P , 0.05).Left ventricular free wall capillary density was significantly decreased in both epicardium (18%; P ,0.05) and endocardium (11%; P , 0.05) despite preserved coronary flow. Western blot analysis revealed no change to the expression of SERCA2a or nNOS but immuno-detectable eNOS protein was significantly decreased (P , 0.001) in cardiac tissue following chronic hypoxia in utero ...
We developed a method to measure the compliance, defined as ΔVΔP, of the total systemic vascular bed (Ct) without stopping systemic flow. In 10 open-chest dogs, venous return (and cardiac output) was maintained at a constant level by inserting a perfusion pump (with no reservoir) between the caval veins and the right atrium. About 5% of the estimated total blood volume was withdrawn from the dog within 45 seconds. Resultant changes in central venous pressure were measured 10, 30, 60, 120, and 180 seconds after the volume change. The bled volume was then reinfused to repeat similar venous pressure measurements for another 180 seconds. The measurements were repeated after slightly increasing the blood volume or sectioning the vagi. The mean value of Ct measured 10 seconds after hemorrhage or reinfusion was 1.96 ± 0.10 (SE) ml/mm Hg/kg body weight before vagotomy. Paired t-tests indicated no significant difference between measurements of bleeding and reinfusion, measurements with different ...

Here, we reveal a novel mechanism whereby loss of wall distensibility blunts endothelial cell protection to oxidant stress-induced apoptosis. Bovine aortic endothelial cells cultured in compliant or stiff silastic tubes were pulse perfused by arterial pressure/flow waveforms generated by a servo-pump. Pulse perfusion induced time-dependent Akt activation peaking ,6-fold after 2 hours in compliant tubes and a similar time course but half the magnitude in stiff tubes. This was accompanied by quantitatively similar disparities in phosphoinositide-3 kinase activation and in Akt-stimulated suppressors of apoptosis: glycogen ...
I would like to use kind of a windkessel model (or something similar) as outlet boundary conditions at my coronary artery model. Does anybody have experience with this? We have shown previously that input impedance of the pulmonary vasculature provides a comprehensive characterization of right ventricular afterload by including compliance. However, impedance-based compliance assessment requires invasive measurements
A method for diagnosing, monitoring and treating hypertension uses the parameter C2 of the modified Windkessel model as an indication of the hypertensive disease condition. Apparatus for determining the parameter C2 (i.e. distal vascular compliance) of the modified Windkessel model includes means for obtaining a pressure pulse contour and a cardiac output value and for determining the model parameters.

This study evaluated the effects of a single dose of pregabalin on colonic sensation and motor function in healthy adults and demonstrated that 200 mg of pregabalin reduces mean gas and pain sensation ratings in response to four random-order phasic distensions over the range of pressures, with the highest pressures reaching around 50 mmHg. These significant reductions in sensation ratings of gas and pain were observed in the absence of any significant effects on relaxation and only small effects on energy and drowsiness, the latter being significant on unadjusted comparison. These data suggest that the effect of pregabalin is mediated by a decrease in peripheral or spinal afferent functions. In our study, the two doses of pregabalin tested did not significantly affect sensation thresholds, colonic compliance, colonic fasting tone, or phasic MI.. A reduction in rectal pain sensation in response to distension was also reported by Houghton et al. (16) in patients with IBS. Human and rodent studies ...
