Managing stress with relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or biofeedback are things we sometimes ignore when facing a chronic illness. After all, how much can these relaxation techniques really help? I know that question goes through my mind at times. Even though practicing relaxation techniques can feel like a waste of time, practicing them can actually turn genes on and off.. Relaxation techniques change your gene expression. Dr. Herbert Benson did a study comparing 16 people who have regularly evoked the relaxation response for an average of 9 years to 19 people that didnt use these techniques.. The human body has about 30,000 genes. Dr. Bensons experiment found that roughly 2,000 genes differed in expression between groups. Many genes that triggered inflammation and cell death were turned off in the group that regularly practiced relaxation techniques. However, this deactivation doesnt appear to be permanent. The daily practice of relaxation techniques such as meditation is ...

On January 30th, 2010, at exactly 10:23am, large groups of skeptics will gather in the town centres of around a dozen cities in the UK and consume a full bottle of homeopathic pills, in order to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of homeopathy. Marsh explains why…. Homeopathy in the UK is alarmingly pervasive - setting aside the fact that the industry is worth an estimated £40million per year, the National Health Service actually plows £4million per year of taxpayers money into providing sugar pills as a Complementary Alternative Medicine - much of which goes into the upkeep of the four government-run homeopathic hospitals. That figure doesnt even take into account the £20 million spent on the redevelopment of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. According to the British Homeopathy Association, more than 400 GPs regularly refer patients to homeopaths. Homeopathy is everywhere. And then we have the UKs leading pharmacy, Boots…. Boots are as much a British national institution as the ...
Very little research has explored the factors that influence interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments. We surveyed persons with sub-optimally controlled type 2 diabetes to evaluate potential relationships between interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments, current self-care practices, motivation to improve self-care practices and satisfaction with current health care for diabetes. 321 patients from a large integrated healthcare system with type 2 diabetes, who were not using insulin and had hemoglobin A1c values between 7.5-9.5%, were telephoned between 2009-2010 and asked about their self-care behaviors, motivation to change, satisfaction with current health care and interest in trying naturopathic (ND) care for their diabetes. Responses from patients most interested in trying ND care were compared with those from patients with less interest. 219 (68.5%) patients completed the survey. Nearly half (48%) stated they would be very likely to try ND care
Adodo Anselm Gbenga (born 1969) is a Nigerian scholar who is a pioneer of Alternative medicine in Africa. He is also Benedictine monk and priest of the Roman Catholic Church in Edo state Nigeria. He founded Nigerias first Alternative medicine and research laboratory enterprise in Nigeria known as Pax Herbal Clinic and Research Laboratories in 1997. He started the herbal enterprise as a little herbal clinic venture in Ewu Monastery meant to offer herbal remedy to common ailments like cough and malaria to nearby villagers. Successes with treated patients meant information about the nascent herbal clinic at the monastery quickly spread to surrounding towns and beyond in a short space of time. Adodo joined the Ewu Monastery in 1987 where he continues to live, pray, work, and study as a monk and an Alternative Medicine practitioner. As a writer, he has written several books on Alternative Medicine, Nutrition and Health, and Epidemiology. Adodo was born in his family home to a Yoruba family in Akure, ...
Background Complementary therapies are widespread but controversial. We aim to provide a comprehensive collection and a summary of systematic reviews of clinical trials in three major complementary therapies (acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy). This article is dealing with acupuncture. Potentially relevant reviews were searched through the register of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and bibliographies of articles and books. To be included articles had to review prospective clinical trials of acupuncture; had to describe review methods explicitly; had to be published; and had to focus on treatment effects. Information on conditions, interventions, methods, results and conclusions was extracted using a pretested form and summarized descriptively. Results From a total of 48 potentially relevant reviews preselected in a screeening process 39 met the inclusion criteria. 22 were on various pain syndromes or rheumatic diseases. Other topics addressed by ...
The AAN has published a comprehensive review of the state of evidence for complementary and alternative medicine therapies for multiple sclerosis.. Despite the growing number of disease-modifying therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS), a major gap remains when it comes to treatments that are both safe and effective in the long term. So it is no surprise that many MS patients turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to try to reduce the disease burden. These treatments, however, are not without their own unique risks - especially since CAM is largely unregulated and inadequately studied.. In order to provide guidance to neurologists and their patients, the AAN Guideline Development Subcommittee conducted a comprehensive review of the available literature (from 1970 to 2013) on CAM therapies for MS. The review appeared in the March 25 issue of Neurology.. The AAN recognized that people with MS tend to use CAM therapy quite frequently, but that there was a lack of scientifically ...

Background - The prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use and the modalities used by pediatric oncology patients vary widely across studies. In addition, the changes in the use of CAM over the course of treatment are understudied. Thus, this study aimed to explore (1) CAM use by pediatric oncology patients in relation to specific time intervals and (2) communication about CAM use between parents and oncologists. Methods - This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among parents of children diagnosed with cancer at a Swiss pediatric hematology-oncology center by means of an online questionnaire. Questions were related to their childs CAM use over different time intervals, sources of information about CAM use, and communication with the oncologists. Results - Among 140 respondents, CAM was used by 54.3% of patients before diagnosis and 69.3% of patients after diagnosis. During each defined time interval, between 50 and 58.8% of the patients used at least one CAM. ...
A relaxation technique (also known as relaxation training) is any method, process, procedure, or activity that helps a person to relax; to attain a state of increased calmness; or otherwise reduce levels of pain, anxiety, stress or anger. Relaxation techniques are often employed as one element of a wider stress management program and can decrease muscle tension, lower the blood pressure and slow heart and breath rates, among other health benefits. People respond to stress in different ways, namely, by becoming overwhelmed, depressed or both. Yoga, QiGong, Taiji, and Pranayama that includes deep breathing tend to calm people who are overwhelmed by stress, while rhythmic exercise improves the mental and physical health of those who are depressed. People who encounter both symptoms simultaneously, feeling depressed in some ways and overexcited in others, may do best by walking or performing yoga techniques that are focused on strength. Research has indicated that removing stress helps to increase a ...

The yoga system is deemed as a healing practice. It safeguards from the unpredictability and ambiguity of practices and remedies of alternative medicine. Traditionally practitioners of scientific medicine looked down upon alternative treatments as unscientific. 5. Alternative medicines dont just heal ailments.. There are many different types of alternative medicine available today and there is an ever-growing interest in everything from a homeopathic remedy for arthritis to finding qualified complementary alternative medical practitioners in a particular area.. The Alternative Medicine Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides consumers and professionals with responsible, evidence-based information on the integration of alternative and conventional medicine. The faith in alternative medicine is rising very steeply and it is estimated that as much as 50{8fb7b0f26e58d192f131d79bd3f82fb8ca7968d10ee8e181a7f5e8440ce97421} of the American people are using some form of alternative ...
Integrative medicine is a term that refers to the integration of conventional western medicine with more naturopathic approaches such as herbal medicine and the use of nutritional supplements.. Integrative medicine makes use of the best available evidence of both approaches to healing. One of its important characteristics is that it considers the mind-body-spirit connection within the patient and regards the patient as a whole.. Integrative medicine is based on a physician-patient partnership in which both conventional and complementary modalities are used to stimulate the bodys natural healing potential.. It is commonly said that Integrative Medicine combines the best of conventional and evidence-based complementary medicine to optimise the bodys natural healing mechanisms:. ...

To the Editor:. Autonomic dysfunction, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV), predicts outcome after myocardial infarction (1). Medications that enhance parasympathetic tone, such as beta-adrenergic blockers, improve outcomes (2). Although the detrimental effects of emotional stress on both autonomic function and cardiovascular disease are well recognized, the beneficial effects of complementary modalities aimed at reducing stress are less well studied. One-half of Americans report visiting practitioners of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) (3). However, rigorous research evaluating physiologic effects of these therapies is lacking. Reiki, an easily learned healing practice, is given by placing hands lightly on the recipients head and torso in a series of noninvasive positions (4). Psychological benefits include reduction of anxiety and perceived stress (5). Reikis physiologic effects, however, are less well described (5).. To determine whether Reiki treatment would improve HRV in ...
At Advanced Integrative Healthcare, we prefer to use various alternative medicine modalities in combination with conventional medical practices. Our goal is for the patient to heal in the best way possible. As defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, integrative medicine combines mainstream medical therapies and CAM therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness. Basically, we believe in trying to use whatever works best that is least invasive, most natural, cost-effective, and safe. When possible, we try and use complementary therapies that have some significant degree of evidence of efficacy. In other cases, we might recommend a treatment out of the naturopathic community that has been traditionally used for decades.. The following definition of integrative medicine is fairly complete and guides us here at AIH as well integrative practitioners all over the world ...

The swelling will usually get better by itself in a few days, but there are treatments that can help it settle faster and reduce the risk of it happening again. Complementary alternative medicine refers to treatments that are used in conjunction with mainstream or conventional medical care. He reported that by Wednesday, his burning pain v sciatica toes gone, leaving some mild sensitivity where the skin was damaged. It makes good sense to strength the muscles that support your back and certainly has reduced my pain.
If theres one thing that proponents of integrative medicine (or, as its been called in the past, complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM) take great pains to emphasize whenever defending their integration of prescientific and pseudoscientific medicine into medicine, its that they do not recommend using alternative medicine instead of real medicine but in addition to real medicine. Indeed, the gods of integrative medicine, such as Barrie Cassileth at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, not only emphasize that ad nauseam but actually often take umbrage when it is suggested that integrative medicine advocates ever suggest that alternative medicine should be used instead of science- and evidence-based medicine. Shes even written articles attacking cancer quackery, seemingly oblivious to the fact that many of modalities that fall under the rubric of integrative medicine are based on the same mystical or pseudoscientific ideas that the quackery she decries is.. Certainly, thats ...

A new report released by The Bravewell Collaborative finds that integrative medicine interventions produce significant improvements in patient activation and patient-reported outcomes in the treatment of chronic pain, depression, and stress. The findings are based on data collected by the Patients Receiving Integrative Medicine Interventions Effectiveness Registry (PRIMIER), the first-ever patient registry on integrative medicine. Lead author Donald Abrams, MD, an integrative oncologist at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, stated, We are encouraged by these early results, and we see tremendous potential for PRIMIER to provide evidence-based research that will improve healthcare quality by pinpointing the most effective practices in integrative medicine.. The study found that the use of integrative medicine yielded an increase in the Patient Activation Measure (PAM), which assesses the degree to which patients believe they have the ...
Our survey provides the first comprehensive description of the use of complementary therapies by GPs in Victoria. As the large sample is, in nearly all characteristics, similar to Australian GPs as a whole, our findings about GP attitudes and use of complementary therapies are likely to reflect the situation across the country. Nearly 20% of GPs had used acupuncture, meditation or hypnosis, and almost half had considered practising these therapies. Over 80% of GPs had referred patients to practitioners of these therapies. A quarter to a third were interested in training in chiropractic, herbal medicine, naturopathy and vitamin and mineral therapy. Further, around 5% of doctors use therapies, such as osteopathy, homoeopathy, aromatherapy and spiritual healing, which are relatively unknown to most of their colleagues. It is interesting to speculate on the discrepancy between the number of GPs who trained in meditation, hypnosis, herbal medicine and vitamin and mineral therapy and the number who ...

Consumers increasingly are turning to complementary medicine, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathy, massage therapy, dietary supplements and herbs, energy healing, meditation and yoga, and mind-body therapies. This book addresses the growing interest in the legal, ethical, and regulatory aspects of integrating such care into conventional clinical settings.. Integration of divergent philosophies, paradigms, and practices requires responsible investigation, informed judgment, and open-minded yet critical study and analysis of various systems of healing. Michael H. Cohen offers providers and policymakers vitally important information by addressing questions such as credentialing, malpractice, informed consent, and liability for referrals. He describes both practical strategies for minimizing liability, as well as the necessary future evolution of the legal and regulatory structure.. Cohen also probes uncharted ethical and bioethical issues in complementary medicine and integrative health ...

In recent decades, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has become increasingly popular. In the USA, the use of CAM rose from 33.8 to 42.1 % from 1990 to 1997 among the total population [1], while in the 2000s this ratio was 34-37 % [2, 3]. A recent systematic review of surveys in the UK indicated, 51.8 % of the population applied alternative remedies at least once during their lifetime [4]. Among cancer patients the use of CAM grew from 25 % in the 1970s to 49 % in the 2000s [5], and this rate can reach 61 % among orthopaedic cancer patients [6]. In Canada, 27 % of patients waiting for general surgery applied CAM [7], while in the USA the application ratio was 40-67 % [8, 9].. In Norway some forms of CAM treatment were available for patients in 50.5 % of hospitals in 2008 and in 64.4 % in 2013 [10]. Integrative medicine, which uses a holistic approach and CAM has grown popular not only among patients but also among medical professionals as it has gained more developed research basis ...
Background Psychostimulants are first line of therapy for pediatric and adolescent AD/HD. The evidence suggests that up to 30% of those prescribed stimulant medications do not show clinically significant outcomes. In addition, many children and adolescents experience side-effects from these medications. As a result, parents are seeking alternate interventions for their children. Complementary and alternative medicine therapies for behavioural disorders such as AD/HD are increasing with as many as 68% of parents having sought help from alternative practitioners, including chiropractors. Objective The review seeks to answer the question of whether chiropractic care can reduce symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity for pediatric and adolescent AD/HD. Methods Electronic databases (Cochrane CENTRAL register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Index to Chiropractic Literature) were searched from inception ...
Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) has been extensively used as a traditional remedy for male infertility in China. Previous research indicates that Goji berry protects testicular DNA from oxidative damages and restores the production of sexual hormones in damaged animal testes. Regarding BPA harm, an interesting study published in the journal Evidence-based Complementary Alternative Medicine in 2013 shows that Goji berry polysaccharides may reverse the dramatic atrophy of certain male reproductive organs caused by the specific endocrine disruptor, specifically the reduced weight of testis and epididymis. Feeding animals with the healing polysaccharides for 7 days upon BPA exposure recovered the testicular weight to near- normal levels, while fertility-related structures regained the required organisation to support their function. Epididymis weight responded less dramatically to the Goji berry treatment, although there was still a significant improvement. Also, Goji berry polysaccharides increased ...

I think homeopathy may work, but only really by acting as a placebo, but the thing I cant really resolve is, is there a place in mainstream medicine for a flat out placebo approach option for doctors. Somewhere I once read that GPs used to write placebo prescriptions(something like a aspirin), sometimes, but are not allowed to now(well here in the UK); I dont know what the facts are for that. Anyone know? I think basically it is a form of deceit, which doesnt seem right, but on the
Integrative medicine approaches, including meditation, yoga, tai chi, massage, and other practices are widely used by Americans in the hope of obtaining health benefits. Evidence for the health effects of these practices, however, has important limitations. The goal of the fellowship, Training for Research in Integrative Medicine (TRIM), is to train post-doctoral behavioral and social scientists, physicians, and other qualified health professionals to design and conduct rigorous clinical and translational research in CAM and integrative medicine. The program is based at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine (OCIM) within the UCSF School of Medicine. In the present renewal, we detail the rationale for the program and our progress to date, and we propose a program incorporating improvements based on our experience in the first five years. A key change we propose is to expand the training program to include two predoctoral positions in addition to the current four post-doctoral positions. The ...

I know this is an older post but seeing how I am new to this board I felt I would chime in. Having a strong interest in and having a broad amount of ecperience working with acupuncturists both human and veterinary, I think that your fairly gross generalization that most veterinary acupuncturists are out for the quick focal alleviation of pain is just that, a gross generalization. And arent gross generalizations something that the homeopathic and alternative medicine practitioners have been fighting when the very things that they espouse are so often dismissed by traditional western medicine?. Just like all professions, you will find good and bad practitioners. Are all plumbers just out for our money? All used care salemen slick talkers and con artists? Mechanics out to dupe you? Well yes there are some, but to generalize and say that most are, I feel is erroneous. No profession is perfect. Did you know that in a relatively recent survey most pet owners ranked their relationship with their ...

Fertility reflexology is pre-conceptual reflexology for both women and men. It is widely acknowledged that before a couple conceive, they should try to get themselves into good mental and physical shape. Reflexology is a holistic therapy that aims to balance the mind, body and spirit and is an ideal therapy for those wanting to ensure that they can create the best environment in which to start a family.. Reflexology is an extremely relaxing therapy which promotes a sense of health and well being and it can help to calm the mind and ease away stresses.. Reflexology is all about balance. It is based on the belief that energy flows around the body and that if energy can flow freely then the body is in harmony but if the energy flow is blocked then the body is not balanced and illness may result. A reflexologist will work the reflexes of the feet to find energy blockages and then works the blockages to restore energy flow, therefore enabling the body to get rid of toxic waste products and thus heal ...
Hormonal imbalances are often thought of in terms of womens problems, but in fact hormonal imbalances are responsible for controlling many of our body processes and have control over the systems within the body. Hormones control the growth of the skeleton and have an influence on muscles, connective tissues and organs such as the kidneys and liver. Hormones also control the activity of the thyroid gland and regulate water balance within the body by controlling the amount of water in the urine. Hormones enable the release of milk from the breasts during breastfeeding.. How Can Reflexology Help With Hormone Imbalances?. Reflexology does not aim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology is very much an individual treatment which works on a holistic level, so it is not possible to know how an individual will react to a treatment. The theory is that Reflexology helps the body to restore its hormonal balance naturally.. Reflexology is based on the belief that energy flows around the body and that ...

Reflexology is a systematic practice in which applying some pressure to any particular points on the feet and hands give impacts on the health of related parts of the body.1 Each point of the pressure acts as the sensors on the feet and hands and is links with different parts of body specifically.1 These sensors will be stimulated by applying the reflexology technique in order to improve the blood and energy circulation, give sense of relaxation, and maintain the homoeostasis.2 Reflexology session can be improved by other elements such as aromatherapy, peaceful music, and good environment settings.3 There is a term in reflexology called reflex zone therapy. First of all, it is important to be clear on what reflexology is not: reflexology is not a foot massage.. Your reflexologist may incorporate some massage techniques into your treatment. This is simply to relax you, but the bulk of your treatment is far removed from a massage. In fact, you should feel deep pressure from your reflexologists hands.. Now lets find out what reflexology is. In particular Id like to highlight just how effective it is as a treatment for any type of back pain. When the right areas of the feet, or the hands, are treated with the right amount of pressure, the results can be truly amazing for back problems.. How can this be?. The treatment causes the nerve flow to the area of the back causing the pain to improve. Over several sessions, and often in just a few weeks, this nerve flow becomes optimized. The same thing happens to the blood and the lymph flows to the problem area of the back.. Reflexology is known to be of use for both chronic and acute back pain, but it is ...

The short consultation length in primary care is a source of concern, and the wish for more consultation time is a common reason for patients to seek complementary medicine. Physicians practicing anthroposophic medicine have prolonged consultations with their patients, taking an extended history, addressing constitutional, psychosocial, and biographic aspect of patients illness, and selecting optimal therapy. In Germany, health benefit programs have included the reimbursement of this additional physician time. The purpose of this study was to describe clinical outcomes in patients with chronic diseases treated by anthroposophic physicians after an initial prolonged consultation. In conjunction with a health benefit program in Germany, 233 outpatients aged 1-74 years, treated by 72 anthroposophic physicians after a consultation of at least 30 min participated in a prospective cohort study. Main outcomes were disease severity (Disease and Symptom Scores, physicians and patients assessment on numerical

Did you know that water regulates every function in your body? Every part of your body needs water; without it your cells dry up and wither.. When you dont drink enough water, you get dehydrated. Some symptoms might include a burning sensation while urinating, afternoon fatigue, dry skin, constipation, headache, stiff joints, varicose veins, kidney stones, and the list goes on. Every part of your body contains water, even your teeth are composed of 10% water.. So, what type of water does your body need? Pure water. Its really as simple as that.. So what is pure water, you ask. Water that is composed of only hydrogen and oxygen, completely free of chemicals and inorganic minerals.. Inorganic minerals are minerals that are made in a lab that cant be used (at least not in a healthy way) by your body, but could possibly cause harm.. One of the best sources for pure water are fresh, organic vegetables and fruits and the juice that comes from them because they have broken down all the minerals for ...
three years ago, the SIO immediately criticized me for spending so much of it discussing homeopathy, which its leadership properly rejected as being pseudoscience. There were two aspects of this complaint that amused me. First, homeopathy was a far smaller part of the first draft of the article, but reviewers forced me to add more. Second, even more amusing (or disappointing-or both) was that it was clear that the SIO had no clue how integral homeopathy is to naturopathy. I responded by pointing out that naturopathy schools include many hours of homeopathy in their curricula and that naturopaths are tested on homeopathy in the NPLEX, the licensing examination used by states that license naturopaths. I also couldnt resist twisting the knife a little bit by pointing out that one of the authors of the SIO clinical guidelines for breast cancer was a naturopath who at the time had an open clinical trial of homeopathy listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. Basically, you cant have naturopathy without ...
