The goal of The investigators community-based participatory research study is to identify the nature and extent of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among HIV-positive Latinos on the San Diego/Tijuana border. CAM use among US Latinos living with HIV is associated with delayed utilization of and poor adherence to antiretroviral therapies (ARVs) that may exacerbate health disparities in HIV care access and health outcomes. This study will lead to development of culturally-effective interventions to improve access and adherence to HIV care in Latinos who face health disparities. The investigators hypothesis is that greater use of CAM will be observed among HIV-positive Latinos who report a) crossing the U.S. border more frequently, and b) having migrated to Tijuana or San Diego (e.g. from southern Mexico). The investigators also hypothesize that compared to HIV-positive Latinos who report using herbal CAM, those who do not use herbal CAM are more likely to be receiving ARVs and ...

This paper reports the findings of a large population-based survey on the knowledge, recommendation and practice of CAM among GPs in Tuscany. Unlike previous studies, the random sampling strategy and the high response rate ensure that the sample is representative and that the results can be generalised. Tuscany is one central region of the country where the populations use of CAM, which in Italy decreases gradually from the North to the South of the country [18], is similar to the national average [9]. Should the same geographical gradient apply to physicians, our findings may be considered indicative of GPs level of knowledge and behaviours regarding CAM throughout the entire country.. In the present study over half of the respondents reported to recommend CAM to their patients while a far smaller fraction (13%) acted as CAM practitioners themselves. Published figures on the practice of CAM by primary care physicians vary greatly across countries, ranging from 8% [19] and 13% in Israel [20]; ...

Background Portugal has a strong tradition of conventional western healthcare. So it provides a natural case study for the relationship between Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Western Medicine (WM). This work aims to test the relationship between CAM and WM users in the diagnosis and treatment stages and to estimate the determinants of CAM choice. Methods The forth Portuguese National Health Survey is employed to estimate two single probit models and obtain the correlation between the consumption of CAM and WM medicines in the diagnosis and treatment stages. Results Firstly, both in the diagnosis and the treatment stage, CAM and WM are seen to be complementary choices for individuals. Secondly, self-medication also shows complementarity with the choice of CAM treatment. Thirdly, education has a non-linear relationship with the choice of CAM. Finally, working status, age, smoking and chronic disease are determinant factors in the decision to use CAM. Conclusion The results of this work

Race has been reported to affect the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), but there is very little research on the use of CAM by ethnicity in Korea. This study explores the prevalence of CAM use among ethnic minorities in South Korea. The design is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of ethnic minorities was recruited from two public healthcare centres in Gyeonggi province. The survey instrument included 37 questions regarding CAM use, factors influencing use of CAM, self-health management, and the socio-demographic profile of study participants. Sixty-two percent of study participants reported the use of CAM. Multivitamins (53.3%), acupuncture (48.9%), and traditional Korean herbal medicine (38.9%) were popular CAM modalities in our sample. Other notable CAM modalities included herbal plants, therapeutic massage, and moxibustion therapy. The majority of CAM users (52.2%) received CAM services to treat diseases or as a secondary treatment while receiving

Note: This is a slightly modified version of an article that was published in the magazine Skeptical Inquirer, Volume 34, No. 1, January/Februrary 2010. It is reprinted here with the kind permission of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.. ------. Chiropractors, homeopaths, naturopaths, acupuncturists, and other alternative medicine practitioners constantly criticize mainstream medicine for "only treating the symptoms," while alternative medicine allegedly treats "the underlying causes" of disease.. Nope. Not true. Exactly backwards. Think about it. When you go to a doctor with a fever, does he just treat the symptom? No, he tries to figure out whats causing the fever and if its pneumonia, he identifies which microbe is responsible and gives you the right drugs to treat that particular infection. If you have abdominal pain, does the doctor just give you narcotics to treat the symptom of pain? No, he tries to figure out whats causing the pain and if he determines you have acute appendicitis he ...

The investigators used data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, according to a press release published on www.pubmed.gov.. Among the results:. • Approximately 6 percent of the U.S. population used CAM to treat their back pain in 2002.. • Sixty percent of respondents who used CAM for back pain perceived a "great deal" of benefit. • The factor associated with perceived benefit from CAM modalities was reporting that a reason for using CAM was that "conventional medical treatment would not help.". • The two factors associated with less perceived benefit from CAM modalities were fair-to-poor self-reported health status and referral by a conventional medical practitioner for CAM.. "The majority of respondents who used CAM for back pain perceived benefit," the investigators noted. "Specific factors and therapies associated with perceived benefit warrant further investigation.". Detoxification also referred to as body cleansing is an alternative medicine or natural remedy that consists of an approach aiming to rid the body of toxins that are an accumulation of harmful substances that can exert undesirable effects on health and wellbeing both in the short and the long term. Detoxification can exist in various forms, including dieting, fasting, consuming or avoiding specific foods, and colon cleansing. By the 18th-century, medical practitioners had begun to question the efficacy of detoxification-based approaches and 20th-century detoxification-based approaches to healing the body fell out of favor with Western medicine. Even though abandoned by mainstream medicine, detoxification has remained popular amongst alternative medicine practitioners and followers. And with good reason. The main point of a natural detox remedy is to make the body s pH more alkaline. A body being alkaline is crucial to a person s overall health since diseases tend to thrive in acidic ...

Background: Cancer patients have been documented to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) frequently, a subject that has been extensively researched. There is however a lack in the current literature of controlled studies that investigate the prevalence of CAM use among cancer patients compared to non-cancer controls. Aim: To assess and compare the prevalence of dietary related CAM use among adult cancer patients and non-cancer controls in the Norwich area, England. Methods: Self-administered questionnaires were used to survey cancer patients attending a comprehensive cancer centre in Norwich, and non-cancer controls attending three dental surgeries also in the Norwich area. Questions addressed patient demographics, information relating to cancer diagnosis (cancer cases only) and information on CAM use. CAM users were asked about types and duration of CAM use, reasons for use, information sources used, disclosure to health professionals, reported side effects and benefits and ...

Unfortunately the only way to get the prescription and IV services described above is to go to an alternative medicine practitioner who is also a General Practitioner (Doctor) or an ME/CFS expert specialist. Mainstream medicine provides no treatment at all and the ME/CFS specialists are difficult to find unless you are able to travel overseas and attend a specialised clinic. A naturopath or osteopath may be able to service some of these recommendations. Lyme disease experts usually have a background in ME/CFS and fibromyalgia as well as tick-borne diseases. There is growing scientific evidence about complementary and alternative treatments. Interest in complimentary and alternative medicine, or CAM, is growing as consumers and health care professionals search for additional ways to treat anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders.. Complementary medicine is used along with conventional medicine. An example is in-home treatment to help modify symptoms of panic attacks. Alternative medicine can include a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy recommended by a medical doctor.. Clarithromycin (CAM), a 14-membered macrolide, has some effects as a biological response modifier in addition to its antibiotic effects. Long-term CAM treatment has been shown to improve the prognosis of patients with unresectable non-small cell lung cancer, including their quality of life. In the present study, I examined the suppression of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell proliferation, expression of mRNAs for integrin and TGF -β in LLC cells, suppression of lung metastasis and cytokine mRNA in spleen cells of mice lung cancer model by CAM. Proliferation of LLC cells and the expression of mRNAs for integrin (α4, α6, β1) and TGF-β were suppressed by CAM, CAM decreased the number of lung metastasis nodules in LLC-bearing mice. The expression of mRNAs for IL-12 and IFN-γ in spleen cells was increased after CAM treatment. On the contrary, the expression of mRNAs for IL-6 and IL-10 was decreased. Furthermore I determined the in-vivo effect of CAM on metastasis in unresectable non -small cell ...
