Objectives - To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a critical care nursing outreach service in facilitating discharge from the intensive care unit and providing follow-up in general care areas. Methods - A before-and-after study design (with historical controls and a 6-month prospective intervention) was used to ascertain differences in clinical outcomes, length of stay, and cost/benefit. Patients admitted to intensive care units in 3 adult teaching hospitals were recruited. The service centered on follow-up visits by specialist intensive care nurses who reviewed and assessed patients who were to be or had been discharged to general care areas from the intensive care unit. Those nurses also provided ...

Introduction. Community involvement is one of the crucial principles in the implementation of community-based education (CBE) programmes, if they are to achieve what they set out to achieve (Calleson, Seifer & Maurana 2002:79). Community involvement in CBE should be seen as an active process in which the community makes investments in terms of ideas, experience and skills, and takes risks (Williams et al. 1999:730). The role of partners should be to make joint decisions in determining mechanisms for action (Wojtczak 2002:5). The community is commonly viewed as a geographically-designated setting with a specific group of people. In this article, the community refers to a clinical setting that is used as a non-traditional clinical learning site for community-based learning experiences (Carter et al. 2005:168), and it includes both the study participants and non-participants who are sharing resources. This setting offers students an opportunity to learn about socio-economic, political and ...

When high schools reach out to families, are parents more likely to support their teenagers as learners? This research examines whether high school outreach programs can help sustain family partnerships that tend to decline as students transition from middle to high school. Predictors of parental involvement in various partnership activities at the high school level are examined. Analyses indicated significant relationships among several school outreach activities and a variety of parent involvement measures. Results indicated that high school outreach programs significantly and positively predicted parent involvement in a variety of learning-at-home, parenting, and volunteering activities, regardless of the students background and achievement. School contacts concerning postsecondary planning, as well as other outreach measures, had a positive influence on parents reports of college-planning discussions. Analyses also showed that school outreach to parents regarding how to assist students ...

By their nature, first episode programs involve a number of challenging methodological issues that differ from traditional programming. First, these programs must identify individuals who may not be known to the specialty behavioral health system and then engage them in a program of care and support. Understanding the effectiveness of the program in meeting the needs of these unidentified individuals requires estimates of the incidence of first episode events. These estimates must be derived from the epidemiological literature based on the characteristics of the population in the service area. Second public education and outreach efforts must be launched targeting the various venues where individuals are likely to be seen. These include parents, educators, police officers, hospitals and primary care settings among others. Monitoring the effectiveness of these outreach efforts and better targeting educational materials involves ongoing monitoring of the referral network. Engaging young adults ...

Dr. Lathan helped to administer the Health Information Trends Survey (HINTS), which revealed that overall knowledge of lung cancer among all races is limited. Neither black nor white respondents realized mortality was so high, and both groups had general misconceptions about prevalence. However, black patients were more likely than white patients to agree that it is difficult to follow recommendations about preventing lung cancer, to avoid an evaluation for lung cancer for fear they have the disease, and to believe patients with lung cancer would have pain or other symptoms before diagnosis.2. Following the quantitative analysis, Dr. Lathan conducted a focus group consisting of African American patients in a housing project in Boston. The qualitative results from the study suggested that African American smokers are aware of the relationship between smoking and lung cancer, are interested in smoking-cessation treatment, and desire more compassion from their physicians. According to Dr. Lathan, ...
