Washington, DC) The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) today released the results of the 2013 Follow-Up Spring Valley Public Health Study and Community Health Assessment Survey for Zip Codes 20016 and 20015. The study was conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Todays report builds upon the Public Health Screening Study conducted by Johns Hopkins investigators in 2007. The 2007 study found that Spring Valleys overall community health status was very good. However, additional analysis was recommended for several health outcomes. The current follow-up project consisted of three components:. 1) Community Outreach Survey for Zip Codes 20016 and 20015;. 2) Community Health Assessment; and. 3) Environment and Exposure Analysis. Hopkins researchers concluded that residents can be assured that community health is very good and most environmental indicators are in compliance with established standards or are similar to conditions in other urban areas. 395. Thats the number of counties where the poverty rate has been at or above 20 percent for three decades in a row. We call this persistent poverty. That means for the 6.9 million people who live in these communities, the deck is stacked against them-they face enormous barriers to health and opportunity. And when we allow these gaps in rural areas to persist, the whole nation suffers.. But we dont think of persistent poverty as a permanent state or as a given. These communities have been structurally and systematically left behind and disinvested, but theyre also home to enormous strength and resilience. We know this because we live and work in these communities. With intentional investment, we can right these wrongs. The members of PRT have come together to provide the basics every community needs - quality jobs, housing, infrastructure and other vital needs . With and through the people who live here, we are creating healthy communities with access to healthcare, financial security, ...

This dataset provides key health indicators for local communities and encourages dialogue about actions that can be taken to improve community health (e.g., obesity, heart disease, cancer). The CHSI report and dataset was designed not only for public health professionals but also for members of the community who are interested in the health of their community. The CHSI report contains over 200 measures for each of the 3,141 United States counties. Although CHSI presents indicators like deaths due to heart disease and cancer, it is imperative to understand that behavioral factors such as obesity, tobacco use, diet, physical activity, alcohol and drug use, sexual behavior and others substantially contribute to these deaths.. ...

CAM has been used in the state of Iowa for over 150 specific cases since June, 2005. The implementation of CAM has been a voluntary process, initiated by the farmer and implemented through a joint effort between the Coalition to Support Iowas Farmers (CSIF), the Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC), and faculty with Iowa State Universitys College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The use of CAM requires on on-site visit to assess and map community receptors and existing animal-related odor sources.. The mapped data is then brought to the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering where one of two faculty members implement CAM. A one-page report is generated and this report is given to the farmer, through a follow-up on-site visit with an IPIC staff member. At the conclusion of a CAM modeling run, a staff member from IPIC conducts a follow-up site visit with the farmer to explain results of CAM predictions. The estimated total expense (currently free to the farmer) to implement CAM is ...

A second overarching theme at the conference centered on health data. The biggest buzz was generated by the newly launched Community Health Data Initiative (CHDI), highlighted by Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Office of Science and Technology Policy, The White House; and Todd Park, CTO of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).. The CHDI data set will ultimately consist of thousands of measures of health care quality, cost, access, and public health (e.g., obesity rates, smoking rates). It will include data produced for the Community Health Status Indicators, County Health Rankings, and State of the USA programs. Data will be available at the national, state, regional, and county levels, as well as by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and income (where available). This initiative is part of HHS.gov/OPEN, and is in search of a better name (vote here to rename the CHDI).. Useful health data abound, but tend to be tucked into nooks and crannies. The key is to unlock the mojo ...

Nomadic livestock production is the backbone of the economy of pastoral communities in the Karamoja cluster. However, widespread and uncontrolled livestock raiding is currently threatening the success of this enterprise. In fact, raiding has been named as the single most important impediment to the development of the cluster generally and particularly in the delivery of animal health services. Efforts are being made by national and international agencies to remedy the situation. One of these agencies is the CAPE Unit of OAU-IBARs PACE Programme whose mandate in the area includes the control animal diseases through community-based initiatives. Following the realisation of the negative impact of livestock raiding on animal health service delivery, the PACE with the assistance of the donor community, particularly REDSO, DFID and CDTF, initiated a Pastoral Community Harmonisation (PCH) project to find solutions to this problem in order to enable it fulfil its mandate. One of the steps taken in this ...
In three districts, a USAID-funded grant1 enabled ChildFund International to introduce a new method of contraceptives to rural areas through community-based distributors (CBDs). To meet growing demand, the injectable contraceptive Dep-Provera was added as a third option to condoms and contraceptive pills. In the context of human resource shortages, the provision of family planning services at the community level has shifted from health workers to CBDs. The project established a learning site through which other NGOs could witness best practices for CBDs, which has facilitated broader distribution of Depo-Provera.. The CBDs program has been instrumental in increasing the uptake of family planning services, with the number of users increasing over six-fold in just four years - from 1,822 in 2012 to 11,700 users in 2015. Ruth Mushili, a 33-year-old woman from Kamoba village commented, Access to family planning [before CBDs] was never easy. The distance to the facility used to discourage me and the ...

Isolating genetic markers for crippling hereditary diseases is, without a doubt, a health innovation. So is manufacturing prosthetic limbs that respond to the neural stimuli of patient brains. But as one local neighborhood is determined to show, important health innovations dont always occur in the laboratory or in the hospital. Sometimes they occur when a community health project decides to sit down and listen to more than 1,500 residents talk about health issues in more than a dozen languages.. That is just one of the innovative health practices employed by the Building Healthy Communities Project in San Diegos City Heights neighborhood. Supported by a 10-year funding commitment from the California Endowment, the City Heights project is one of 14 neighborhoods involved in the statewide Building Healthy Communities Initiative. Steve Eldred, program manager at the California Endowment, said one of the main factors that makes this initiative so unique is a commitment to community health that is ...
