A system and method for transacting an automated patient communications session is described. A patent health condition is monitored by regularly collecting physiological measures through an implantable medical device. A patient communications session is activated through a patient communications interface, including an implantable microphone and an implantable speaker in response to a patient-provided activation code. An identification of the patient is authenticated based on pre-defined uniquely identifying patient characteristics. Spoken patient information is received through the implantable microphone and verbal system information is played through the implantable speaker. The patient communications session is terminated by closing the patient communications interface. The physiological measures and the spoken patient information are sent.
Participants in the intervention are African American parents or guardians who have children in the 4th or 5th grade that are 12 or younger. Recruitment was done through schools, housing authorities, community based organizations, and churches. Participants were randomly assigned to participate in one of three interventions delivered by community based interventionists. The enhanced sexuality communication intervention consists of five 2.5 hour sessions conducted over 5 weeks with booster sessions at 12 and 24 months post-intervention. The full sexual communication intervention focuses on general parenting skills and sexual communication skills using a variety of presentation modalities: group discussion, video, and role-plays. The brief sexual communication intervention consists of a single 2.5 hour session in which parents are provided with information on general parenting skills and sexual communication skills. Thus, this intervention seeks to provide the same information as the full sexual ...

I chose the topic of self-concept through interpersonal communication because I had an interest in it. This interest is because I didnt understand that ones self-concept affected the way one is perceived by others. I learned self-concept through class discussions, but I wanted a better understanding of how communication affects ones self-concept and how it affects ones perception Ones self-concept affects ones perception, attitude and behavior, which can be demonstrated during the process of interpersonal communication. Aspects of ones life influence their self-concept, which not only affect how people perceive them but how they perceive themselves. Such things are gender, motivational level and psychological type. It is widely known that in order to communicate with others one must first understand oneself. This is self-concept, and affects the way one communicates. In the process of communication, self-knowledge and the way one feel about oneself is revealed to others, and affects how ...

Credibility and transparency are essential to building trust in public health communications. During unfolding public health crises, the problem of what and when to warn is an enduring policy dilemma that goes to the heart of public trust.. Last week the World Health Organization (WHO) persuasively refuted spurious claims from the Council of Europe that H1N1 was a "fake pandemic" engineered for pharmaceutical companies profit by calmly presenting the timeline of pandemic events. H1N1 turned out to be a pandemic of moderate pathogenicity. However, at the outset clinical indicators revealed a spreading global hazard in the form of a rare but progressively fatal viral pneumonia that was straining intensive care units.. A more complex communications challenge comes from the influential grassroots antivaccine movement, which claims a link between vaccines and asthma, allergies or autism. Concerned parents in small but growing numbers are opting not to vaccinate their children. These decisions weaken ...

ITN use increased dramatically in the district between 2008 and 2010. It is likely that IPC activities in general may have contributed to the observed increase in ITN use, as the increased observed in this study was far higher than the increase observed between 2008 and 2010 malaria indicator survey (MIS) estimates. Contamination across control communities, coupled with linear settlement patterns and subsequent behavioural norms related to communication in the area, likely contributed to the observed increase in net use and null effect in this study ...

Background Although social norms are thought to play an important role in couples reproductive decisions, only limited theoretical or empirical guidance exists on how the underlying process works. Using the theory of normative social behavior (TNSB), through a mixed-method design, we investigated the role played by injunctive norms and interpersonal discussion in the relationship between descriptive norms and use of modern contraceptive methods among the urban poor in India. Methods Data from a household survey (N = 11,811) were used to test the underlying theoretical propositions, and focus group interviews among men and women were then conducted to obtain more in-depth knowledge about decision-making processes related to modern contraceptive use. Results Spousal influence and interpersonal communication emerged as key factors in decision-making, waning in the later years of marriage, and they also moderated the influence of descriptive norms on behaviors. Norms around contraceptive use, which

The average physician conducts between 140,000 and 160,000 medical interviews in the lifetime of his or her practice, making it the most frequently used medical procedure. Strong evidence links interpersonal processes of care to a variety of positive outcomes. For example, in studies done by faculty at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, patients who report greater involvement in medical care are more satisfied with their physicians, report more understanding, reassurance and perceived control over their illness, and have improvements in medical conditions. Patients who explicitly report being treated with respect and dignity have higher trust, are more adherent to care and are more likely to receive optimal preventive care.. Studies that have directly observed patient-physician communication have demonstrated a positive effect of physician communication behaviors on patient outcomes including pain relief, satisfaction, compliance, and recall of information. In their interactions with African-American ...

Yuko Oyama. Professor Keefer. Writing Workshop II. August 1, 1998. Major Factors Affecting Communication Styles of American Children and Japanese Children: the Analog Age and the Digital Age. It is widely known that children develop their language not only by an innate faculty but also through social interaction. Language, a medium of communication, is learned as a side effect of childrens attempts to interact with others and learn about their world. In the process of language acquisition, children encounter various factors, which have great impacts on their communication styles. These factors vary with the passage of time. In this paper, I would like to examine major factors affecting communication styles of the children in the United States and Japan, both in the analog age and the digital age. First, I will compare communication styles of each country, and examine how maternal speech helps children develop culture-specific communication patterns. Next, I will predict how communication styles ...

The research, published in the July/August edition of Annals of Family Medicine, found that after one year of a multi-site randomized controlled trial, Guided Care physicians were significantly more satisfied with patient/family communications than physicians who provide usual care. Guided Care physicians were also significantly more satisfied with their knowledge of their patients clinical characteristics.. "These findings suggest that Guided Care provides significant benefits to physicians by improving communications with chronically ill older patients and their families," said Jill Marsteller, PhD, MPP, the lead author of the study and assistant professor at the Bloomberg Schools Department of Health Policy and Management. "Physician satisfaction is another important element of improving chronic care, in addition to improving the quality of care and reducing costs. The quality of patient-physician communications affects patients knowledge of their illness, adherence to treatment ...

So how do you become a better communicator? The first step is to become a better listener. Too often, especially in trying to talk about something emotional or argumentative, we tend to think more about what were going to say while ignoring what the other person is trying to express. We may assume we know what the other person will say and, without taking the time to really hear and understand what their words, begin our own response. Listening is an active and difficult skill.. ...

The present invention provides a method for improving the communication coverage in a multi-cell communication system (100) which employs neighbor cell lists. A cell site (114) provides a communication unit (128) within its cell (112) with communication and a neighbor cell list. The neighbor cell list (200) informs the communication unit of other cells which are possible hand-off targets. When the fixed network equipment (FNE) detects that a particular communication unit (128) has entered another cell and/or needs to hand-off its communication to another cell site but has been denied, the cell site (114) sends the communication unit the neighbor cell list related to the new cell. With a new neighbor cell list (300), the communication unit (128) can now attempt to maintain its communication by handing-off to cells unknown before. In this manner the effective communication coverage of the system is improved.
JAMA articles on medical communication companies are rife with misperceptions and errors, according to CME advocates; ACCME CEO Murray Kopelow, MD weighs in.
The discovery sheds new light on cell behaviour and could lead to the development on new drugs to combat diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimers disease.. The team led by Monash University Associate Professor Martin Lackmann found that for one particular communicator between cells, an enzyme known as A-Disintegrin-And-Metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10), a change in the shape of its contender (communication partner) will start the communication process.. Scientists are interested in ADAM10 - and the proteins that are split by this protease - because it is critical in cellular mechanisms that underlie several major diseases.. "This communication process between cells forms the basis for the way in which certain diseases progress. This discovery will change how we understand cell behaviour and change how we consider the design of therapeutic drugs in this area" Associate Professor Lackmann said.. "This new concept in understanding of how cells communicate identifies a process that is ...

New data suggest that problems in doctor-patient communication may account for at least some of the disparity. Studies show patients make most medical decisions based on some degree of consultation with their physician and that race influences a patients perception of the quality and quantity of information gathered from the physician consultation. In particular, patients perceive better communication with and support from physicians of the same race.. Led by Howard S. Gordon, M.D. of the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, researchers investigated how race influenced doctor-patient communication in the setting of patients with lung cancer and suspicious lung lesions. The investigators reviewed, transcribed, and analyzed audiotapes from 137 separate doctor-patient consultations.. They found that the degree of patient engagement with the physician impacted the frequency of information provided by physicians but race did not, despite ...

This qualitative interview study explored the way in which information about predictive BRCA1/2 testing and its implications for children is disseminated within the families of at-risk men who undergo genetic testing. Twenty-nine in-depth interviews were carried out with family members [male patients (n = 17), their partners (n = 8) and adult children (n = 4)]. These explored the following themes: experiences of cancer and genetic testing, decision-making about testing and the communication of test results and genetic information within the immediate family. The interviews revealed that both male patients and their partners perceive themselves, rather than health professionals, as responsible for disclosing information about genetic testing and genetic risks to their children. Parents described three different communication strategies for the disclosure of genetic information to their children: complete openness, limited disclosure and total secrecy. The adoption of a particular communication strategy

Several months later, I was attending my first class at W&L, Intro to Environmental Studies, taught by Leah Green. Over the summer, I had been uneasy about my decision to come here, but that course changed everything. One day, we were visited by Ben Eland - who is now Professor Greens husband - and learned about Common Ground, the intentional community where they lived. I was taken instantly. I spoke with Ben after class to inquire about Common Ground, as he had mentioned that they often welcomed students to intern there in the summers, which was a strange calling for me. Even though Id come from a rural area, I was by no means a "farm kid." With Professor Greens recommendation, I wound up doing my environmental service learning placement at Common Ground the following term, and ultimately spent a summer there after my sophomore year. During this time, I was able to truly connect with various members of the university and Common Ground, in addition to Ben and Professor Green. Suddenly, it ...

A method of setting up a communication between a plurality of terminals (T1, . . . , Tn) in a network comprises the activation of at least one chosen node (N1, . . . , Nm) of the network. A node is selected beforehand as a function of predetermined criteria, then the presence of possible means of management of communication on this node (N1, . . . , Nm) is thereafter detected. In case of absence of the means of management on the node, means of management of communication are dispatched to the node. This method applies in particular to computer networks that can support teleconferences.

... plays a very important part in almost to everyones life. This type of communication occurs most often in face-to-face conversations and in telephone speech skills.. The Verbal Aspects of Conversation. Face-to-face conversation is the most common form of one-to-one communication. Conversation consists of talk about various matters of common interest to both of the people involved. Conversations, unlike many other types of communication are usually not planned or rehearsed beforehand.. There are a few rules you should be aware of if you want to be an interesting person to talk with.. Send and Receive Messages Accurately: It is important that when you are conversing that you send and receive accurate messages. Choose words you are sure your receiver will understand. Your word choices should largely depend on who your listener is. You should also consider your listeners age and experience when communicating. For example, you should not use technical words to describe an ...
This research will investigate the effect of a new cognitive intervention designed to improve basic functional communication abilities. The treatment will be nonverbal and involve computer and paperbased tasks ordered hierarchically from basic to more complex tasks. Six to eight participants will take part. All their sessions will take place in their own home. For some this may be a care home. They will first complete a diagnostic communication assessment in order for baseline abilities to be established. Further formal language and cognitive assessments will be conducted over a period of 6 weeks. A relative/friend will complete a questionnaires about mood/communication. The PwGA will also be videoed interacting with the research student e.g. looking at a magazine, completing a jigsaw, answering questions and making choices non-verbally ...
An asynchronous transfer mode inverse multiplexed communication system is disclosed wherein a series of communication cells are multiplexed over a set of communication links. Each communication cell includes a framing bit of a predetermined framing bit stream for each communication link and a control channel bit of a control message for each communication link. Inbound communication cells from each communication link are aligned according to the corresponding framing bit stream. The control message specifies an ordered list of logical identifiers to indicate a multiplexed sequence of transfer of the communication cells over the communication links.

Apparatus includes a communication predelivery receiver, configured to communicate with and relay both IP addressed overhead and IP addressed payload data from an originating communication device. The communication predelivery receiver includes a screener configured to, when the communication predelivery receiver is in communication with the originating communication device, receive certain data including first IP addressed data and second IP addressed data of corresponding first and second initiated communications. The communication predelivery receiver is configured and connected within a network so the first IP addressed data and the second IP addressed data are processed differently. For the first initiated communication, the first payload data is converted, after the point in time at which the screener received the first IP addressed data, from IP addressed first payload data to another network signal. For the second initiated communication, the second payload data is delivered without so

FALL ON ROCK, INADEQUATE PROTECTION, POOR COMMUNICATION, INADEQUATE MEDICAL TRAINING. California, Yosemite Valley, El Capitan. At 0330 on May 15, Matt Christensen (26) and Tony McClane (20) climbed fixed lines to Sickle Ledge on El Capitan and started up pitch 5 of the Nose (31 pitches, VI 5.9 Cl per Super Topo). They traveled light, with one 60-m rope, hoping to summit that night. The climb went smoothly and they were happy with their progress. After completing pitch 24, Tony belayed just below Camp V, at the spot marked "OK bivy for 1" on Super Topo. It was now about 2030, a little after dark.. Matt led pitch 25. To avoid rope drag, he placed no protection on the easier section up to the ledge just above Camp V (marked "OK bivy for 2" on the topo). Then he continued up a thin aid crack toward the Glowering Spot. Tony could not see Matt by this time because of darkness and the shape of the wall. After the rope had paid out for a while Matt seemed to slow or stop for a few minutes. Then Tony ...
Yet, ultimately, when all types of patients are included in managed care plans, I think that patients will choose plans that encourage physicians to understand, counsel, and help them to make wise health decisions. When most patients enrolled in managed care plans are young and healthy, the counseling requested is minimal and the decisions often trivial. Thus, an internists advanced interview skills are undervalued and even demeaned. As older patients with more complex problems enter managed care, their satisfaction will surely decrease if the time limits used for the generally healthy are applied. Some managed care organizations that insure all types of patients are currently investing in training programs to improve their physicians communication skills ...

Or maybe your answer is distracting and "good enough" even if it isnt correct (eg: If your child comes home from school, points to the cabinet, and says "cookie"---thinking about how the girl who sits next to him at school today had the exact cookies that are in that cabinet---and you assume he wants a cookie and give him some on a plate, whats the obvious reply from your kid? Factorial designs are efficient for assessing two interventions when they act independently of each other.40 Our results did not show interaction effects between the C reactive protein test and the enhanced communication skills strategy-that is, the combined effect of the test and training was neither synergistic nor antagonistic. We nevertheless included interaction coefficients in all models to correct for possible undetected interactions.. The sustainability of the acquired communication skills may be questioned. We previously reported sustained competence in implementing these skills.43 A sensitivity analysis of the results by winter period (2005-6 and 2006-7) showed that the observed effects on antibiotic prescribing were similar during both periods. Moreover, most patients seeing general practitioners who had been allocated to communication skills training recalled key topics being covered during the consultation. The enhanced communication skills may therefore have become embedded in the ...

A data communications device includes a supervisory circuit, a power supply, and a power circuit. The power circuit includes a data communications port, a power supply connection coupled to the power supply, and a power controller coupled to the data communications port and the power supply connection. The power controller is configured to provide a power signal from the power supply connection to the data communications port in response to communication with the supervisory circuit. Upon loss of communication with the supervisory circuit, the power controller is configured to selectively continue to provide the power signal from the power supply connection to the data communications port when a local parameter has a first value, and discontinue providing the power signal from the power supply connection to the data communications port when the local parameter has a second value.

An interface (12, 14, or 16) in a service-provider networks transit label-switching router (P2) employs resource-management messages to inform neighbor routers of the bandwidths that it can allocate to various routes that it supports. To allocate its available bandwidth, it employs a weight value set for the route by an ingress router (PE2) in a system to which the label-switching router belongs. The transit router treats the weight as a relative bandwidth: when the sum of the bandwidths requested for various routes exceeds the bandwidth available, the router sets the bandwidths for at least some routes in accordance with the ratio of a given routes weight to the sum of the weights assigned to all routes among which it divides available bandwidth in this manner. That is, it assigns at least some bandwidth to all such routes, regardless of how small the resultant bandwidth may be. In this way, the network can operate with virtually no packet loss and yet remain available to all of its customers.

Part of the hesitancy in initiating these conversations is that death and mortality are scary subjects, and its more comfortable for us not to discuss them with patients and to put them off for as long as possible. But as soon as you tell a patient he has cancer, one of the first things he thinks is, "Am I going to die of it?" So, in some ways, we are playing a silly game of thinking that if we dont mention the word death or mortality to patients, they wont think of it themselves. In reality, patients think about those things long before they come into our office. Death and mortality are exactly what they worry about, so giving patients an opportunity to talk about the topic is not introducing something new. It is acknowledging that death is something patients are already thinking about.. Often it is a relief for terminally ill patients to have the opportunity to talk openly about what they are scared of. It can be helpful to talk about death before it becomes imminent and say something like, ...
