A system and method for transacting an automated patient communications session is described. A patent health condition is monitored by regularly collecting physiological measures through an implantable medical device. A patient communications session is activated through a patient communications interface, including an implantable microphone and an implantable speaker in response to a patient-provided activation code. An identification of the patient is authenticated based on pre-defined uniquely identifying patient characteristics. Spoken patient information is received through the implantable microphone and verbal system information is played through the implantable speaker. The patient communications session is terminated by closing the patient communications interface. The physiological measures and the spoken patient information are sent.

Participants in the intervention are African American parents or guardians who have children in the 4th or 5th grade that are 12 or younger. Recruitment was done through schools, housing authorities, community based organizations, and churches. Participants were randomly assigned to participate in one of three interventions delivered by community based interventionists. The enhanced sexuality communication intervention consists of five 2.5 hour sessions conducted over 5 weeks with booster sessions at 12 and 24 months post-intervention. The full sexual communication intervention focuses on general parenting skills and sexual communication skills using a variety of presentation modalities: group discussion, video, and role-plays. The brief sexual communication intervention consists of a single 2.5 hour session in which parents are provided with information on general parenting skills and sexual communication skills. Chuanchaisit and Prapphal (2009). The questionnaire was based on the purposive sampling method and distributed to thirty participants, including Human Resources analysts, supervisors, and advisors. The key findings revealed: (1) Thai professionals often used communication mobility in their workplace, and mostly employed Strategy 4: Individual active strategy, Strategy 7: Analytical strategy, and Strategy 2: Schema search strategy; (2) they also often employed communication strategies in workplace communication; and (3) there was no significant difference in the uses of communication mobility and communication strategies among them, even though they used communication strategies that were ranked slightly higher than communication mobility. New findings have confirmed that communication mobility was another strategy for effective communication, which was used in this particular Human Resources setting almost as often as communication strategies which have been used for decades. They also ...

I chose the topic of self-concept through interpersonal communication because I had an interest in it. This interest is because I didnt understand that ones self-concept affected the way one is perceived by others. I learned self-concept through class discussions, but I wanted a better understanding of how communication affects ones self-concept and how it affects ones perception Ones self-concept affects ones perception, attitude and behavior, which can be demonstrated during the process of interpersonal communication. Aspects of ones life influence their self-concept, which not only affect how people perceive them but how they perceive themselves. Such things are gender, motivational level and psychological type. It is widely known that in order to communicate with others one must first understand oneself. This is self-concept, and affects the way one communicates. In the process of communication, self-knowledge and the way one feel about oneself is revealed to others, and affects how ...

Some areas seemed too simplistic-for example, telephone communication whereas other areas new to me and very useful-for example, breaking bad news, gathering information for history taking, presenting info. Excellent resources and management of sessions throughout course. Have picked up lots of useful information. Much better with actors-not comfortable with role plays with colleagues, even though I interact so well with them (very unrealistic). This I found difficult, felt uncomfortable and as though I was acting in a way I wouldnt normally. This didnt happen with the actors scenarios. (1). Early sessions I felt did not always recognise your previous experience in communication; however, this improved as we progressed through the modules. Teaching methods I found good and very thorough leaving us with valuable resources to refer to in our future practice. Role plays not so good among ourselves but excellent with actors/actresses. Learnt a lot about my communication skills. Always better ...

Credibility and transparency are essential to building trust in public health communications. During unfolding public health crises, the problem of what and when to warn is an enduring policy dilemma that goes to the heart of public trust.. Last week the World Health Organization (WHO) persuasively refuted spurious claims from the Council of Europe that H1N1 was a fake pandemic engineered for pharmaceutical companies profit by calmly presenting the timeline of pandemic events. H1N1 turned out to be a pandemic of moderate pathogenicity. However, at the outset clinical indicators revealed a spreading global hazard in the form of a rare but progressively fatal viral pneumonia that was straining intensive care units.. A more complex communications challenge comes from the influential grassroots antivaccine movement, which claims a link between vaccines and asthma, allergies or autism. Concerned parents in small but growing numbers are opting not to vaccinate their children. These decisions weaken ...

ITN use increased dramatically in the district between 2008 and 2010. It is likely that IPC activities in general may have contributed to the observed increase in ITN use, as the increased observed in this study was far higher than the increase observed between 2008 and 2010 malaria indicator survey (MIS) estimates. Contamination across control communities, coupled with linear settlement patterns and subsequent behavioural norms related to communication in the area, likely contributed to the observed increase in net use and null effect in this study ...
Principals of modern Title I elementary schools, where at least half of the student population lives in poverty, must possess a broader set of leadership skills than has been historically necessary. The ability to motivate teachers utilizing effective communication is one such skill set. This qualitative research proposes a division-level training program designed to improve communication skills of principals and aspiring principals based on the self-reported communication strategies of principals at high-performing Title I elementary schools. High performing Title I schools represented just 8% of all Title I schools in Virginia during 2014. This qualitative data was derived from semi-structured interviews with 8 of these principals, surveys of principals, and publicly available data about these schools. Analysis of the self-reported information resulted in 11 specific communication strategies practiced by most or all of the principals in the participating high performing Title I elementary ...

Background Although social norms are thought to play an important role in couples reproductive decisions, only limited theoretical or empirical guidance exists on how the underlying process works. Using the theory of normative social behavior (TNSB), through a mixed-method design, we investigated the role played by injunctive norms and interpersonal discussion in the relationship between descriptive norms and use of modern contraceptive methods among the urban poor in India. Methods Data from a household survey (N = 11,811) were used to test the underlying theoretical propositions, and focus group interviews among men and women were then conducted to obtain more in-depth knowledge about decision-making processes related to modern contraceptive use. Results Spousal influence and interpersonal communication emerged as key factors in decision-making, waning in the later years of marriage, and they also moderated the influence of descriptive norms on behaviors. The average physician conducts between 140,000 and 160,000 medical interviews in the lifetime of his or her practice, making it the most frequently used medical procedure. Strong evidence links interpersonal processes of care to a variety of positive outcomes. For example, in studies done by faculty at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, patients who report greater involvement in medical care are more satisfied with their physicians, report more understanding, reassurance and perceived control over their illness, and have improvements in medical conditions. Patients who explicitly report being treated with respect and dignity have higher trust, are more adherent to care and are more likely to receive optimal preventive care.. Studies that have directly observed patient-physician communication have demonstrated a positive effect of physician communication behaviors on patient outcomes including pain relief, satisfaction, compliance, and recall of information. In their interactions with African-American ...

Mothers voice is a foundational stimulus and is one of the most salient vocal sources in a childs life. Here we have identified the brain structures and network that are sensitive to brief (,1 s) samples of pseudoword speech sounds produced by each childs mother compared to female control voices. We observed distinct representations of mothers voice in a wide range of brain structures, encompassing not only auditory and voice-selective structures in the temporal cortex but also structures of the reward circuit including the NAc, OFC, and vmPFC, structures implicated in affective processes, including the amygdala, and regions associated with visual face processing, including fusiform cortex. Importantly, connectivity analyses revealed that coordinated neural activity between voice-selective regions and structures serving reward, affective, face processing, salience detection, and mnemonic functions predicts social communication abilities. Our results suggest that hearing mothers voice, a ...

TY - CONF. T1 - Turings Menagerie: Talking Lions, Virtual Bats, Electric Sheep and Analogical Peacocks: Common Ground and Common Interest are Necessary Components of Engagement. AU - McKeown, Gary. PY - 2015/9/21. Y1 - 2015/9/21. N2 - This theoretical paper attempts to define some of the key components and challenges required to create embodied conversational agents that can be genuinely interesting conversational partners. Wittgensteins argument concerning talking lions emphasizes the importance of having a shared common ground as a basis for conversational interactions. Virtual bats suggests that-for some people at least-it is important that there be a feeling of authenticity concerning a subjectively experiencing entity that can convey what it is like to be that entity. Electric sheep reminds us of the importance of empathy in human conversational interaction and that we should provide a full communicative repertoire of both verbal and non-verbal components if we are to create genuinely ...
Social and communicative competence is central to success in school, and fundamental to development of peer relationships. As social communication deficits are well documented in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), improving these skills is often a key focus of intervention, particularly in speech-language pathology (SLP).
A full service channel access protocol that supports the integrated transport of voice, video and data communications is provided by dividing a communication channel into a plurality of frames, dividing each of the frames into a plurality of slots, and dividing some of the plurality of slots into a plurality of mini-slots. The mini-slots are provided for use by the multiple communication sources to request the establishment of a new voice, data, or video transmission connection over the communication channel. Additionally, a second one of the plurality of slots is divided into a plurality of second mini-slots for use by the multiple communication sources to request the establishment of a new voice, data, or video transmission connection over the communication channel and for use by the multiple communication sources to augment an existing video connection over the communication channel. The method enables timely and power efficient communications over communication network
Supporting people with episodic health conditions can be challenging from organizational perspectives. The challenges stem from the need to provide accommodation and support while respecting workers right to privacy, and to respond to unpredictable periods of disability while ensuring work units meet productivity demands.

This study was instrumental in better understanding parental practices, attitudes and knowledge, perceived service quality, and preferences for communication strategies in Colombia. The study also helped characterize barriers to immunization, showing that nearly half of the parents and guardians in this study were not adequately demanding vaccination services. Overall, 24.4% of participants primarily associated reasons related to themselves (group one) as immunization barriers, while 24.5% cited adverse events and religious/cultural beliefs (groups five and six). These findings reinforce the notion that re-designed and improved communication strategies on immunization were needed in Colombia to generate increased demand for immunization. Additionally, associations among the types of barriers were observed, including associations between service quality and parental factors, such as forgotten appointments. In this respect, our findings are consistent with a recent assessment of 202 studies on the ...

The participants brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, which they shared in a series of plenaries and two televised debates.
TY - GEN. T1 - Free space optical communication on UAV-Assisted backhaul networks. T2 - 2019 IEEE Globecom Workshops, GC Wkshps 2019. AU - Lee, Ju Hyung. AU - Park, Ki Hong. AU - Alouini, Mohamed Slim. AU - Ko, Young Chai. PY - 2019/12. Y1 - 2019/12. N2 - In this work, we address the trajectory optimization of a fixed-wing UAV using free space optical communication (FSO). Here, we focus on maximizing the service time of FSO-based vertical wireless backhaul networks by considering practical constraints for wireless UAV communication, including limited energy and required data rates. To solve the optimization problem, we use a bisection method and sequential programming and introduce a new feasibility algorithm. Although we design suboptimal solutions due to the non-convexity of the problems, simulation indicates that the proposed schemes exhibit a gain of approximately 123.4% in terms of service-time when compared with the conventional scheme.. AB - In this work, we address the trajectory ...

Time to spread the word! Media Communications Faculties help scholars inspect communications among worldwide communities, and includes courses in digital media, broadcasting, reporting, writing, interpersonal communications, speech, and language.. Students must be aware the terms media communications, journalism, and mass communications mean much the same, or extraordinarily similar, thing. Course outlines in college course catalogues might be more trustworthy than catalogue course titles when thinking about and selecting among the assorted programs in Media Communications.. Media Communications is very different from Media Studies in that Media Studies stems from theatre, film, and speech, and strains the consequences of media on populations. Media Studies, as a discipline, is related to cultural perspectives and the interpretation of communications. Media Communications (or Mass Communications), from another standpoint, embodies ideas and abilities of writing, journalism, radio, TV, and ...
Communication difficulties between individuals with Alzheimers disease (AD) and their caregivers are commonly reported. Caregivers carry the burden of managing breakdowns in communication because people with AD are often unable to modify their communicative behavior. To assist caregivers in this endeavor, clinicians and caregiving professionals have offered a variety of strategies aimed at accommodating the individuals declining abilities. Many of these strategies are intuitively appealing, but they lack empirical support. This study investigated the effectiveness of 10 frequently recommended communication strategies when employed by family caregivers of persons with AD. In particular, we assessed (a) which strategies family caregivers report using and with what degree of success, (b) which of these strategies are used by caregivers in actual interactions with their spouses, and (c) which strategies contribute to improved communication. The study included a self-report questionnaire and ...

By Melanie Lockwood Herman. According to a survey of more than 300 HR managers, a lack of honest and open communication tops the list of factors causing low morale in the workplace. The survey, conducted by Accountemps, revealed that the #1 source of low morale in any workforce is poor communication. Although ineffective communication bears a steep price tag, the cost to remedy the situation is chump change. Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps, noted in a press release that improving workplace communication is one of the most effective-and least costly-ways to combat the problem of a disengaged workforce.. What other common workplace issues threaten your staff morale, and therefore your mission? When asked what has the most negative impact on employee morale? respondents made the following selections:. ...

The way you communicate with someone says a lot about who you are. Knowing how to appropriately communicate with others is vital to healthy relationships and career success. In therapy, we will address and change maladaptive communication patterns and learn healthier and easier ways to communicate with others. Therapy can increase relationship satisfaction, reduce misinterpretation, and can be the difference between keeping or losing your significant other or your job. Together we can identify the communication styles and behaviors that will be helpful in developing better relationships.. Sometimes, it is necessary to have both parties present to work on communication. Relationship counseling requires willingness to accept personal accountability of your own part in the conflict. Disagreements and arguments are normal, but when insults, criticism, intimidation, threats, humiliation, or stonewalling become commonplace, the negative communication can tear down the relationship and can enter the ...
It is often claimed that the early phases of media and communication studies were dominated by a linear conception of communication, modelled as a process of transmission. The hegemony of this model may have been exaggerated - it never prevailed in studies of interpersonal communication, for instance - but it has undeniably provided a favourite target for critics of various stripes. While some communication theorists have proposed elaborations of the well-known sender-message-receiver schema, others have argued for more radical revisions of modelling rooted in e.g. semiotics, constructivism, and the ritual view of communication. At the same time, scepticism regarding the very notion of a model of communication has grown stronger; and in recent decades, the focus has often switched from first-level conceptions to second-order meta-models of the constellations of communication theory.. What is the status and relevance of communication models today? The proliferation of new forms of mediated ...
A method and apparatus whereby a communication unit (10) transmits a first communication channel request signal at a first power level. If a communication link with a base site (12) is not established within a predetermined period, the communication unit transmits a second communication channel request signal at a second level which is higher than the level of the first communication channel request signal. This process may be continued for a predetermined number of times or until a communication link is established. Thus, the probability that a nearby base site, rather than a more distant base site, grants the communication channel is greatly enhanced.
