Some of our pigs have been enthusiastic eaters of comfrey, which is supposed to be an appetite stimulant for them as well as a nutritious feed. So have some of our goats and all of our chickens. Weve never offered them comfrey only; its always been part of a wide range of options. Weve offered comfrey to our rabbits, but they usually refuse to eat it. I have read that animals are more willing to eat comfrey after it has wilted for a day. This seems to work for some farmers; our animals either eat it fresh or dont eat it at all. I have also read that comfrey can be dried and fed, but none of our animals have been willing to eat dried comfrey, although theyre happy to tear into dried burdock.. Comfrey for Soil-Building and Weed-Stopping. Comfreys high nutrient and mineral content also make it an excellent garden or orchard soil-builder, and so far this use remains non-controversial. By Diana Ross, E-RYT 500, Co-Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.. As I watch Comfrey come into full bloom I cant help but appreciate its power to heal. The best remedy I know for wounds and burns of ANY kind, is Comfrey. It is known as the Miracle Herb, and it is unfortunate that the drug companies have, in my opinion, closed off the research into the herb Comfrey, Symphytum officinale, which has resulted in Comfrey being banned just about everywhere in the world. Even though this plant contains poisonous chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), the leaf, root, and root-like stem (rhizome) are used to make medicine. Comfrey leaves are of great value as an external remedy, both in the form of poultice, for sprains, swellings and bruises, and for severe cuts, burns and rashes.. In (TCM) Traditional Chinese Medicine the skin or Wei Chi (which includes the lungs) is the largest organ in the body, and it is understandable that there are so many remedies for dealing with topical troubles. ...
Why do I call comfrey a miracle plant? Well if I said their was one plant that could help heal broken bones, speed wound healing, heal skin ulcers that nothing else could close, provide fertilizer, provide mulch, feed livestock and be as easy to grow as breaking off a piece of a root and sticking it in the dirt, what would you call it?. Comfrey does all of these things and frankly more. It also has a very undeserved bad reputation as being toxic if used internally. In fact some over zealous nanny state types even caution against using it externally. I am not really sure if the misinformation about comfrey is simply tea cup protectionism run a muck or an outright slander campaign. And while I cant advise you to use comfrey internally, because it is illegal for me to do so, what I will say is at times I do and I certainly am not dead or ill from doing so.. Even if you plan to never use comfrey internally it is still a plant every person should grow and be familiar with. Its uses are too many to ...
There are many issues with the way that research is reported on the internet and many people scare themselves by reading badly referenced and poorly interpreted reports. I eat comfrey personally because I cannot find a single published case history of a healthy human actually experiencing (as opposed to theoretically being at risk from) liver damage from eating identified common comfrey. Nor do I intend to ever consume 20,000 leaves nor drink a cup a day for 18 years.. I also have a huge amount of cream-flowered tuberous comfrey growing here in Scotland (less than 0.02% PAs). So this is mainly the species I eat, in season.. Im not saying that comfrey is totally safe or denying the presence of PAs. That would be to discredit science and just be ignorant! However, it is all a question of perspective. I believe that I will be doing less harm to my body by occasionally eating or using comfrey than I would from, for example, drinking caffeinated drinks daily, eating processed foods full of ...

Comfrey is a perennial plant found in moist grasslands in western Asia, Europe, and North America.[7] The hardy plant can grow to a height of 1-3 ft (0.3-0.9 m).[7] It is a perennial herb with a black, turnip-like root and large, hairy broad leaves that bears small bell-shaped flowers of various colours, typically cream or purplish, which may be striped. A common hybrid is formed between Symphytum officinale and S. asperum, Symphytum × uplandicum, known as Russian comfrey, which is widespread in the British Isles, and which interbreeds with S. officinale. Compared to S. officinale, S. × uplandicum is generally more bristly and has flowers which tend to be more blue or violet.[8] The plant produces significant nectar when compared to other UK plants tested.[9] ...

When applied in either a tea or an ointment, Calendula is the first choice for many types of wounds including cuts, abrasions, burns and inflammations, making it an important part of any first aid kit.. Calendula salve is a great choice for rashes, insect bites, eczema and even sunburn, especially when mixed with comfrey or Saint Johns Wort.. Calendula effectively speeds wound healing and relieves pain and inflammation and its antimicrobial properties will also prevent infection. Calendula also promotes healing and tissue reconstruction by stimulating fibroblastic activity.. Be careful not to apply calendula salve to wounds that are oozing or weeping; use watery preparations only, such as calendula tea or tincture, and allow the area to air dry completely between applications.
