The Red Wattle hog, or Red Wattle pig, is a breed of domestic pig originating in the United States. It is named for its red color and distinctive wattles or tassels, and is on the threatened list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC). Red Wattle hogs are characterized by their red coat and distinctive wattles. They typically weigh 600-800 pounds (270-360 kg). Large specimens can reach 1,200 pounds (540 kg) in weight, 4 feet (120 cm) in height and 8 feet (240 cm) in length. They normally have 10 -15 piglets per litter. They grow fast, forage well, and are hardy, mild-tempered and resistant to disease. They are suitable for extensive management. The early history of the Red Wattle hog is not clear. The modern breed descends from animals found in East Texas in the late 1960s and early 1970s by H. C. Wengler, who cross-bred two wattled red sows with a Duroc boar to start the "Wengler Red Waddle" line. Other animals were found, also in East Texas, about 20 years later by Robert ...
Also known as Red Wattle or Scratchy Wattle, this large shrub is a common component of the pindan vegetation in the Dampier Peninsula. Its reddish brown bark that continuously peels in small curly flakes leaves the tree looking like it has a coat of red curly hair. Traditionally Kimberley Aboriginal people made digging and clapping sticks, boomerangs and spear heads out of…
Comb type in poultry is controlled by two pairs of genes. They are the rose loci and the pea loci where P represents the gene for a rose comb and p the gene for single comb and P the gene for pea comb and p the gene for single comb. A single comb bird will carry the following genes (rrpp), a rose comb bird will carry (RRpp or Rrpp) a pea combed bird will carry (rrPP or rrPp) and a walnut combed bird will carry (RRPP or RrPP or RRPp or RrPp). If a bird carries at least one rose comb gene and one pea comb gene( R_P_) it will have a walnut comb. Further evidence to support the view that Australian Silkies (and possibly those shown overseas) are rose comb (R_pp) and not true walnut comb is provided by the size of the wattles and the absence of a breast ridge in our Silkies. Birds carrying two copies of the pea comb gene (PP) have very small wattles, birds carrying one copy of the pea comb gene (Pp) have a significant reduction in their wattle size and birds not carrying the pea comb gene (pp) have ...

Acacia pubescens, also known as the downy wattle, is an endangered species of wattle found in the Sydney Basin in central New South Wales. Much of its habitat has vanished with the growth of the city of Sydney. French botanist Étienne Pierre Ventenat described the downy wattle in 1803, in his Jardin de la Malmaison as Mimosa pubescens. It had been grown at the Château de Malmaison in the garden of the Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais. Robert Brown gave it its current name in 1813 in Hortus Kewensis. Common names include downy wattle and hairy-stemmed wattle. Derived from the Latin pubescens "hairy", the species name relates to the hairy stems. George Bentham classified A. pubescens in the series Botrycephalae in his 1864 Flora Australiensis. Queensland botanist Les Pedley reclassified the species as Racosperma pubescens in 2003, when he proposed placing almost all Australian members of the genus into the new genus Racosperma. However, this name is treated as a synonym of its original name. ...

Acacia neriifolia (Oleander wattle). This species is from the woodlands of Eastern Australia. It is a tall tree or a small shrub. It has an upright open habit producing golden yellow flower-heads and narrow straight greyish phyllodes.
Acacia decurrens (Green wattle). A fast growing, tall tree with dark green, bipinate leaves and clouds of yellow pom-pom flowers, each with five petals and conspicuous stamens, giving a fluffy appearance.
Also known as Soap or Coles Wattle or Soap Bush this open shrub can grow up to 5 m tall. Its long yellow flowers appear June-July. Tradionally the sticky and unripe pods were crushed up, moistened and rubbed between palms to produce a soap-like lather which removes dirt and was used to clean hands. The pods…
Rockford - Rosecrance President/CEO Philip Eaton has named longtime Janet Wattles Center administrator Mary Ann Abate to the position of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Mental Health Services for Rosecrance Health Network.. In this role, Abate will head up the mental health side of Rosecrances behavioral health services. Late last year, Rosecrance and Janet Wattles Center entered into a formal affiliation that created the most comprehensive network of behavioral health care in the state of Illinois.. "She understands fully that behavioral healthcare is primary healthcare-that it is equally essential to wellness," Eaton said. "Thats the direction this nation is going, and Mary Ann is going to help Rosecrance lead the way in the Midwest.". Abate is uniquely qualified for the post, given her nearly 30-year tenure with Janet Wattles. In addition, she was second in command to long-time Janet Wattles Center President/CEO Frank Ware, who died in February. Most recently, her title with ...

Its worth bearing in mind that if daytime temperatures stay below freezing then large combed birds or birds with large wattles can get a touch of frostbite and this is most uncomfortable. The most noticeable symptom of this is darkened /black areas on the comb or wattle. One of the preventative measures, other than keeping them inside (something that you may already be doing due to the Avian Influenza), is to apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the comb or wattle. The badge of the Order of Australia is a convex disc (gold for AKs, ADs and ACs, gilt for AOs, AMs and OAMs) representing the Golden Wattle flower. At the centre is a ring, representing the sea, with the word Australia below two branches of golden wattle. The whole disc is topped by the Crown of St Edward. The AC badge is decorated with citrines, blue enamelled ring, and enamelled crown. The AO badge is similar, without the citrines. For the AM badge, only the crown is enamelled, and the OAM badge is plain. The AK/AD badge is similar to that of the AC badge, but with the difference that it contains at the centre an enamelled disc bearing an image of the coat of arms of Australia.[note 1]. The star for knights and dames is a convex golden disc decorated with citrines, with a blue royally crowned inner disc bearing an image of the coat of arms of Australia.[note 1]. The ribbon of the order is blue with a central stripe of golden wattle flower designs; that of the military division has additional ...
The present study illustrates several striking features of the genetic diversity present in domestic animals. Firstly, the R2 allele exemplifies the evolution of alleles by two or more consecutive mutations. Other examples include the Dominant white allele in pigs which involves a 450 kb duplication encompassing the entire KIT gene combined with a splice mutation in one of the duplicated copies [31] and black spotting in pigs which is determined by the combined effects of two mutations in MC1R, a missense mutation associated with black colour and a somatically unstable two base-pair insertion [32]. Secondly, it represents a new example of how structural rearrangements have contributed to rapid phenotypic evolution observed in domestic animals [33], [34]. The majority of the structural changes reported to be associated with phenotypic effects, like the effects of R1 and R2 on comb morphology, constitute cis-acting regulatory mutations. The altered configurations of regulatory elements on the ...

Everything is done in a split second - in light of the lighting bubble on chin wattle longbeard sees its prey for few moments: it is pale and translucent phantom ray. At the same moment its bait faded off, wattle has moved downwards, and awful jaws have swung open. As if blades from sheath, from epithelium plicae in depth of mouth four acute fangs were straightened. They were stuck in cartilaginous skull of phantom ray and have pierced through it. One top fang has pierced rays brain. But the ray, like the majority of fishes, is remarkable in amazing survivability: while life left its body gradually, mighty fins began flapping like birds wings, and the translucent ghost has rushed off through depths of the ocean, carrying on its body the terrible rider seized its head. But it had last for some minutes only. Movements of fins gradually turned slower and slower, and then rays body has become soft and has hung lifelessly in thickness of water. But the saber-toothed longbeard has begun to move: it ...
A concerned member of the public found the koala above in her yard, and had the insight to feel she was not right as she had been in the same tree, a wattle over a week. She was monitored overnight and was not seen to move from the same branch, or to come down and move to a suitable eucalyptus tree to eat (wattle is not a tree koalas feed from.) When she was taken to the vet it was found she was in very poor body condition. Under anaesthetic it was discovered she had "one of the largest ovarian cysts ever seen." Furthermore, she had advanced stages of renal failure and was actually slowly dying. Unfortunately the kindest thing to do was to euthanaise her. This goes to show how easily koalas can mask their symptoms. Although she may look fine to the inexperienced eye, their thick fur disguises the underlying poor condition of the body. This koala had not eaten in days, was very weak and was slowly dying.. Another sad story. A young male koala was seen to be not moving from the one tree for over ...
First - here are "we 4" at Colbys yesterday. We look about the same as the last picture, but its always fun to be together and commemorate the little parties with pictures. I need a little bit of help on this one. I have a Light Brahma X Orpington cross...thing. I dont know if its a male or a female. It has no wattles and barely has a comb...so I have no clue. Hes almost 7 months ( I call it a he because it has the feathering of a male, but the voice and maturity rate of a female?) Anyway...the problem is, the males that I had placed "Frodo" with apparently abused him. I saw it wasnt moving around much, so I went and saved it. I picked the bird up and I bet you it weighed less than a pound. Poor thing. I noticed he also had trouble walking, and after a good look, noticed that his toes are cold to the touch, and turning purplish black. Not one of the other roosters or any other birds for that matter have ANY issues with their feet right now. Im assuming Frodo used to sleep on the ground, where it would be warmer than on the fencing...where the other roosters slept ...
I saw a chicken shaped card at Mitchygitchygooys and thought Id try one myself for this weeks Simon Says Wednesday challenge - a shaped card. So I hand sketched the shape onto brown folded card and then cut a beak and two red hearts for the comb and wattle and a large one in light brown for her wing. I stamped music over her body and and some red stripes. Then on her wind I stamped three small feathers in different colour browns and a red, and gave her a punched eye. I finished off the card with an insert and die cut feather. I think shes pretty cute and have left off a sentiment for now. Thanks for taking a ...
This wacky, green-ish 20" long glow-in-the-dark rubber chicken is permanently in the missile position with an open mouth, as if he or she is rocketing through space and loving it. The body is somewhere in the neighborhood of chartreuse, and the feet, beak, eyes, wattle and comb are forest green. Yes, you read that right: glow-in-the-dark.
The comb and wattles are outgrowths of skin that are highly vascularized, making them a useful way to assess the birds overall health. They are normally bright red but their color will quickly fade after death. However, they should remain firm and uniform on palpation. look for abnormalities such as edema, petechiae, necrosis, cyanosis, papules and ulcers ...
This means rich compost! Every coop should have the bedding and manure stripped out periodically. If you are using the deep litter method, you can add new bedding on top of the old, as needed, to reduce any odors. The chickens will scratch around and keep it mixed. Whether you choose to use sawdust or straw on the floor of your coop, it all can go into the compost pile. After a little decomposing action, this nitrogen-rich mix will be ready for your gardens. This is another reason why feeding your chickens well ultimately feeds your soil well (as well as your body!).. 4. Dont forget deep litter for heat. Depending on where you live, winters can be tough for chickens. Ideally, with a self-sustainable farm you want to have as many natural sources of heat as possible. As long as the chickens combs and wattles are not getting frost bitten or frozen, and they can come into the coop to stay dry, then they should be able to handle the weather.. A concern, however, is keeping their water from ...
how did the eye infections start? i am not sure but i suspect that it might have been triggered by the round of foul pox traveling through the flock. foul pox is transmitted by mosquitoes and its been a bad mosquito season down here - part of the reason for my mulching efforts which helps to control mosquito populations by removing open water areas and by supporting microorganisms and insects that eat mosquitoes and mosquito larvae. foul pox once in a flock transfers quickly from chicken to chicken by contact. it moves through the flock in a matter of a few weeks. most chickens survive quite well as the virus rests primarily on the exterior parts of the chicken. one will notice dark wart like lesions on combs and wattles. the virus can kill a chicken if the virus travels inside the chickens mouth and/or throat and lungs. your chicken will show signs of asthma type wheezing and slow lethargic movements. it is hard to bring a chicken back when this ill. i keep b12 on hand and at the earliest ...
Need some advice. I bought a dozen started pullets from and individual and a week after bringing them home, our one year old hens are getting sick with Coryza. They have stopped laying, watery eyes, swollen wattles, and some are coughing. Have lost two so far. I have them on antibiotics in the drinking water and am hoping for the best. Can anyone tell me what I should be doing? Been keeping their house really clean and disenfecting it. From what I have read so far, sounds like eliminating the entire flock and cleaning out the house and waiting to replace the flock is the only cure. My hope is that they will get better, then I will let them all hang around so the new Hens can lay this year, then do the replacement next spring when I start new chicks myself ...
I cannot impart that particular wisdom to Necie until she is much older and a grandma herself. She keeps reminding me Ill be dead by then. No doubt. But my obit will proclaim I passed away prematurely - at age 18. In the meantime, I cocooned her in my arm flab and warmed her with a hot flash. She snuggled down into her favorite solar plexus sink hole as I explained that when she reaches her 18th year of perpetuity, she, too, will understand the complexities of marking out ones life in female years. Why, we can trace our evolutionary chain clear back to Eve, who died at 18 after 930 years of prolific begetting, multiplying and suckling. Necie listened, while she lazily swatted at my neck wattles as if shooing flies on a summer afternoon. Her small body fits comfortably into all the folds and pockets so generously provided by Mother Nature as a special gift to grandmas who are old. I guess in that respect, Im well endowed. ...
The historical importance of West End Woods lies primarily in the old-time use of Saltwater Pond Trail connecting the two coasts of Cayman Brac. But it is also obvious that the trail led to the valuable traditional trees that sustained pioneer life here. The woods (as well as the sea) served as a source of everything needed to sustain pioneer life - firewood; wood to keep fire overnight (candlewood); to keep away mosquitoes (smokewood); for oars and masts (Spanish elm); knees and other boat-building uses (pompero and several others); wattles for the earliest houses (cabbage tree and others); house posts (ironwood, mahogany, bitter plum); tool handles (bull hoof); soap (washwood); and medicines of all kinds (bush teas, poultices, even one to stop bleeding from a cut (pepper cinnamon). All of these trees are to be found in West End Woods.. The location of this woods in West End will give that area a native stand just as the Parrot Reserve provides the central island. Ultimately, one quarter of ...

TUGURIUM a peasants hut or cottage (Varro, R. R. 3.1, 3; Cic. pro Sest. 43, 93). It is probable that these dwellings in country districts long retained the primitive material for the walls of wooden planks, or sometimes wattles, stuffed with turf. (For the same material generally in ancient times, see Fest. Ep. p. 12; cf. TABERNACULUM) The roof was of thatch (Vitr. 2.1, 5; Isid. Orig. 15.8, 4 cf. Ov. Fast. 3.184); sometimes of bark (Plin. Nat. 16.35). As regards shape, in the earliest times there is no doubt that the hut was circular [for the origin of this shape, see DOMUS Vol. 1. p. 654], with a conical roof covered with thatch, turf, or skins, and kept in place by branches or logs slung over it, as is. seen in the pottery "hut-urns," of which an example is given. From this shape was derived ...
It is important to understand that success is not achieved through changes on the outside of your life. A chinampa plot was constructed by staking out a rectangular enclosure into the marshy lakebed. The enclosure would then be fenced in by joining the stakes with wattle. After that, the fenced in area would be filled with mud and decaying vegetation. In order to prevent the roots from becoming water-logged, it was important that the fill brought the chinampa plot above the lake level. Canals surrounding the chinampa plots formed an illusion that these agricultural lands were floating on water, hence its misattribution as floating gardens. To further stabilise these plots of land, willows were planted around the perimeter. This is due to the dense root system which, over time, anchored the retaining walls of the structure and reduced the effects of erosion. In order to ensure that the chinampas produced good harvests throughout the year, it was vital that the supply of water was well managed. During the rainy season, flooding would have been a problem. Hence, a sophisticated drainage system, ...
