Thirty-six percent (108/302) met the criteria for constipation, including the following subtypes: 19% outlet constipation, 5% functional constipation, 5% constipation predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and 7% IBS-outlet. Nineteen percent (56/302) of subjects had IBS or 1 of its subtypes. Functional diarrhea was seen in 6% (17/302), fecal incontinence in 19% (58/302), and anorectal pain disorders in 25% (77/302). After controlling for age, parity, diabetes, constipating medications, and previous pelvic surgery, there were no differences in the prevalence of constipation or any of its subtypes between patients with UI and those with stage 3 or 4 POP. Fecal incontinence was independently associated with UI (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 6.3; 95% CI 2.6 19.1), but not advanced POP. Neither overall stage of POP nor stage of posterior vaginal prolapse was significantly associated with any of the functional bowel disorders, including constipation and its subtypes. Perineal body measurement was ...

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disease with a prevalence of 10.000 - 20.000/100.000 across cultures. So far, no single physiological or psychological reason has been identified. Nevertheless, reduced rectal pain thresholds represent a sensitive and specific marker. Alterations in cerebral viscerosensory and nociceptive representation have been addressed using neuroimaging studies. Processing of stimuli below conscious perception level seems to differ from consciously perceived stimuli. Thus, we examined sub- and supraliminal rectal perception in 8 patients with IBS and 8 healthy matched control subjects. Perception thresholds were assessed by a tracking paradigm. In an functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study using a block design, stimuli below, above, or around the subjective perception threshold were presented in pseudo-randomized order. At supraliminal stimulation in healthy controls, results of previous studies were replicated and confirmed a spinothalamic and ...

We are normally unaware of the complex signalling events which continuously occur within our internal organs. Most of us only become cognisant when sensations of hunger, fullness, urgency or gas arise. However, for patients with organic and functional bowel disorders pain is an unpleasant and often debilitating reminder. Furthermore, chronic pain still represents a large unmet need for clinical treatment. Consequently, chronic pain has a considerable economic impact on health care systems and the afflicted individuals. In order to address this need we must understand how symptoms are generated within the gut, the molecular pathways responsible for generating these signals and how this process changes in disease states.

Because unexplained functional symptoms are a major cause of referral to gastroenterologists, the efficiency of the medical history to lead to a positive diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, without resorting to the use of expensive tests, remains a key question. Whilst the six criteria of Manning et al are widely used, data on their validity in discriminating irritable bowel syndrome from healthy controls, irritable bowel syndrome from non-ulcer dyspepsia and especially among irritable bowel syndrome subgroups, are not available. To evaluate this, we studied 361 outpatients who completed a bowel disease questionnaire, which objectively measured Mannings (and other) criteria. The group included 82 patients with irritable bowel syndrome, 33 with non-ulcer dyspepsia, 101 with organic gastrointestinal disease, and 145 healthy controls. Diagnoses were based on a full and independent clinical evaluation, not on responses to the bowel disease questionnaire. Reliability was assessed by a ...
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of temporary sacral nerve stimulation in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. Symptoms of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome and disease-specific quality of life was evaluated in six patients before and during percutaneous sacral nerve evaluation test. Primary end points were differences between total irritable bowel syndrome symptom score and total quality of life score before and during stimulation. Secondary end points were differences between the variable domains. Percutaneous sacral nerve evaluation test was performed in five women and one man (median age, 33 (range, 26-54) years). The irritable bowel syndrome symptom score decreased from 48.9 to 28.3 (P = 0.004). Pain, bloating, and diarrhea were significantly reduced from 7.9, 13.5, and 17.3 to 4.4, 7.2, and 10.6, respectively (P = 0.02, P = 0.01, P = 0.03). The irritable bowel syndrome quality of life score decreased

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or also known as colitis, is an inflammatory bowel disease regarding bowels motility accompanied by a series of painful and annoying symptoms. According to reports, about 5-10% of population suffers from irritable bowel syndrome. It concerns relatively young people 20-45 years old, while its occurrence is more frequent among women.. Irritable bowel syndrome is associated with psychological causes. Studies suggest that stress is a major causative factor for the onset of IBS. Most people have some degree of psychological symptoms, such as anxiety or depression.. Poor nutrition plays an important role in the pathogenesis of the irritable bowel syndrome. A diet low in fibers which does not maintain the health and integrity of the intestinal mucosa, along with heredity, can lead to disruption of bowel motility and bloating, pain, cramp, diarrhea or constipation.. Absorption of nutrients from the intestine is affected. People who suffer from IBS exclude from their diet ...

Irritable bowel syndrome is the most common functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract and is frequently treated by family physicians. Despite patients worries about the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, it is a benign condition. The diagnosis should be made using standard criteria after red flags that may signify organic disease have been ruled out. An effective physician-patient relationship is vital to successful management. Episodes of diarrhea are best managed with loperamide, while constipation often will respond to fiber supplements. Antispasmodics or anticholinergic agents may help relieve the abdominal pain of irritable bowel syndrome. Refractory cases are often treated with tricyclic antidepressants. Newer agents such as tegaserod and ondansetron target neurotransmitter receptors in the gastrointestinal tract Some forms of psychologic treatment may be helpful, and gastroenterology consultation is occasionally needed to reassure the patient. Comorbid conditions such as depression or

The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome, irrespective of the type, is unclear. It is classified as a functional bowel disorder meaning that the condition is due to an alteration in physiology but not an actual disease process (pathology) or structural abnormality. Functional bowel disorders are only diagnosed when other related conditions have been investigated and excluded as a possible cause of the symptoms.. It appears that the intestinal motility is altered in irritable bowel syndrome. In the cases of IBS-D the problem may be that the muscles that are responsible for intestinal motility are hyperactive. As a last the bowel transit time (movement of food and waste through the bowel) is increased. However, there are many theories about the mechanism behind IBS which may therefore also to diarrhea-predominant IBS.. Although many possible causes have been postulated, the exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still unknown. There are instances where it arises after a bacterial infection ...
Candida albicans was sought in stool samples from 38 patients with irritable bowel syndrome and 20 healthy controls. In only three patients with irritable bowel syndrome was C. albicans discovered and these patients had either recently received antibiotics or the stool sample had been delayed more than 24 hours in transit. C. albicans was isolated from none of the control stool samples. We conclude that C. albicans is not involved in the aetiology of the irritable bowel syndrome.. ...

BACKGROUND: Although irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not a life-threatening condition, it can have a serious impact on a patients daily activities and quality of life. This effect on quality of life has not been compared previously across different cultures.. METHODS: We compared measures of health-related quality of life and health care resource utilization using a cross-sectional point-in-time postal survey of a random sample of 500 members of the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in the US and 500 members of the IBS Network support group in the UK. The analysis was limited to persons who reported that a physician had told them they had IBS. A general health status questionnaire, the SF-36, and a disease-specific questionnaire, the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life questionnaire (IBSQOL), were self-administered as part of the survey to measure health-related quality of life. Results on the SF-36 were compared with published normative data for adults ...

Q. I have irritable bowel syndrome; what dietary remedies might help?. A. There are many to try, though not all will help everyone. Certainly, you are not alone. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most frequently diagnosed digestive disorder in the U.S. It is characterized by abdominal pain, cramps, bloating and diarrhea alternating with constipation. Women are two to three times as likely to have the condition as men. Many other disorders mimic the symptoms of IBS, including food allergies, colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. These should be ruled out first.. Most people with IBS are able to control symptoms with diet and stress management, but may need medication. The most promising, alosetron hydrochoride (Lotronex), was taken off the market in November 2000 due to dangerous side effects. With both drug therapy and diet management, relief varies with the individual.. Individualize Your Eating. "There really isnt a specific diet per se ...
A patient suffering from Irritable Bowel syndrome, better known as spastic colon is diagnosed with chronic abdominal pain, bloating and changed bowel habits. Have you suddenly felt uncomfortable with a sharp abdominal cramp and felt like running to the washroom after eating out? You may be having Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) which is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). IBS is a chronic condition that you will need to manage with long term changes in diet, lifestyle and stress levels, besides exercise, plenty of fluid intake, good sleep, medication and counselling. Signs and triggers vary from case to case, can be very severe at times, may improve or even disappear completely - not all with this condition react to the same stimuli. We still do not know what exactly causes irritable bowel syndrome, but a variety of factors play a role. Common triggers include certain kinds of food like chocolate, spices, fats, fruits, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, milk, carbonated beverages and alcohol to name a few; stress; hormonal changes; abnormalities in the gastrointestinal nervous system and other illnesses like diarrhoea or ...

IBS Causes and Treatment - Irritable bowel syndrome can be detrimental to your overall health. Learn more about irritable bowel syndrome from HowStuffWorks.
No one knows exactly what causes irritable bowel syndrome. The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract and relax as they move food from your stomach through your intestinal tract to your rectum. Normally, these muscles contract and relax in a coordinated rhythm. But if you have irritable bowel syndrome, the contractions may be stronger and last longer than normal. Food is forced through your intestines more quickly, causing gas, bloating and diarrhea. In some cases, however, the opposite occurs. Food passage slows, and stools become hard and dry.. Some researchers believe IBS is caused by changes in the nerves that control sensation or muscle contractions in the bowel. People with IBS may have a heightened sensitivity to stretching of the bowel with gas leading to pain or bloating. Others believe the central nervous system may affect the colon. And because women are twice as likely to have IBS, researchers believe that hormonal changes also play a role. Also, many ...
A problem with fecal matter is that it can become backed up in the colon, so keeping the colon cleansed is a major part of keeping it healthy, and gaining the benefits of a healthy colon for the rest of the body. Imagine if you will the walls of the colon lined with aging and deteriorating fecal matter. Not a pleasant thought, but a necessary one. This fecal matter contains bacteria which multiply. They in turn release toxins into the body. These toxins are poisons that can make you sick. This results in a condition called spastic colon, or irritable bowel syndrome. This irritable bowel syndrome can result in constipation, diarrhea, headache, body ache, water retention, bloating, cramping and abdominal pain and discomfort. These symptoms can be alleviated through proper cleansing of the colon. Proper colon cleansing is done through a healthy diet, high in fiber, low in fact, containing healthy foods like whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, brown rice, green leafy vegetables like spinach and ...
