N2 - Spontaneous contractions, inhibitory responses produced by electrical field stimulation, and some electrophysiologic properties of circular smooth muscle from normal sigmoid colon and from sigmoid colon of ulcerative colitis patients were compared in vitro using simultaneous recordings of mechanical and intracellular electrical activity. In normal colonic circular muscle obtained from 21 patients, the frequency of spontaneous summation contractions ranged from 3 to 7 per 4 min, whereas in circular muscle from 13 patients with ulcerative colitis, the frequency of these contractions ranged from 1 to 9 per 4 min. Nonadrenergic, noncholinergic relaxation produced by electrical field stimulation was recorded in the majority of circular smooth ...

Previous studies have shown that DNA alkylation is a common event in colorectal tissue but the source of exposure to the methylating agents remains to be identified. These results confirm our previous study in a separate population of patients with colorectal disease,8 in demonstrating that colorectal DNA, obtained from individuals with malignant colorectal disease, contains detectable amounts of the pro-mutagenic and pro-carcinogenic lesionO 6-MedG. Furthermore, evidence from the current study indicates thatO 6-MedG levels vary within the large bowel as (i) DNA alkylation was higher in normal tissue from the sigmoid colon and rectum than in the proximal colon, (ii) only 13% of paired normal and tumour DNA samples obtained from the proximal colon were both alkylated compared with 21% in the sigmoid colon and 42% in the rectum, and (iii) O 6-MedG levels in tumour DNA from the proximal colon (but not the sigmoid colon or rectum) were greater than those in normal DNA.. A number of different ...

Premalignant colonic growth. Endoscopic view of a benign (non-cancerous) but premalignant tubular adenoma (lower centre to lower right) in the sigmoid colon. Premalignant conditions are ones which, if left untreated, may develop into cancer. Adenomas are growths that arise from glands. In the colon these are an important early warning of potential cancer development. The sigmoid colon is the final part of the large intestine (colon) and joins to the rectum. The colon is mainly responsible for extracting water and salt from solid wastes before they are eliminated from the body. - Stock Image C001/2427

This is another post not for the squeamish, just so you know.. As my wife noted to me today, its easy to get a bit blasé at the Cancer Agency-everyone there is dealing with cancer, and it almost seems normal. But today, after my final radiation treatment (yay!) and an excellent Mexican lunch with our friend Steven, I took a brief nap in his guest room and then walked to St. Pauls Hospital to meet with my surgeon, Dr. Brown. His news was not unexpected, but it wasnt the best case scenario either.. The upshot: when I have my tumour surgery in July, Dr. Brown recommends removing everything in my bowel from the bottom of my sigmoid colon on down, leaving with me no functioning rectum, and meaning that I will need a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. Yikes.. Now, I figured that might be the case, but it was still difficult to hear straight up. I cant argue with Dr. Browns conclusion. He wants to eliminate every trace of cancer he can get at. All the tissue that was previously found to be ...
The rectum is the most distal segment of the large intestine, and has an important role as a temporary store of faeces. It is continuous proximally with the sigmoid colon, and terminates into the anal canal.
hi hoagiemom,. I also had Stage III colon cancer in my sigmoid colon. I too had 2 positive lymph nodes (out of the 19) that were close to the site. No mets (thank god).. I had my diagnostics and surgery done at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN which is world renowned. The adjuvant chemo that was recommended was 5FU and Leucovorin. My oncologist is wonderful. I declined the chemo and instead went on an alternate route of Eastern Medicine with dietary modifications and juicing of fresh organic veggies being the foundation of my protocol. Cancer likes an acidic blood pH so my goal has been to stay alkaline. Juicing organic green veggies helps me do this. Cancer cannot live in an alkaline environment. Cancer likes sugar and processed foods. Cancer cells have more sugar receptors than healthy cells so it gobbles up the sugar and goes on a feeding frenzy. thats one reason why diet is so vital in healing cancer. Juicing also provides live enzymes which are integral to a healthy body.. I also took many ...

Sigmoid colon volvulus, also known as sigmoid volvulus, is a common cause of bowel obstruction and constipation. It is common in Asia, India (7% of intestinal obstruction) and especially South India because of the high fibre diet. It is very common cause of large bowel obstruction in Peru and Bolivia due to high altitude. Pain in abdomen - initially left-sided, eventually all over Absolute constipation Enormous distension of abdomen Late vomiting and eventually dehydration Features of peritonitis Hiccough and retching may occur Tyre-like feel of the abdomen is diagnostic The condition is more common in males and with old age. It is also common in people with chronic constipation and laxative abuse. It is common in: Ogilvie syndrome Individuals with learning difficulties Chagas disease Hypothyroidism Anticholinergic drugs Multiple sclerosis Scleroderma Parkinsons disease In sigmoid, volvulus rotation is always anticlockwise. It requires one and a half rotation to cause vascular obstruction and ...

Endometriosis is a relatively common condition in women of reproductive age. Malignant transformation of intestinal endometriosis is a very rare event. We report a case in which a patient with a history of endometriosis underwent surgery for malignant intestinal endometriosis. A 55-year-old woman complained of rectorrhagia and intermittent abdominal pain. A neoplasm was revealed by colonoscopy, CT scan and F18-FDG PET/CT of the recto-sigmoidal colon. The patient underwent a rectal anterior resection, hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for treatment. According to the histological and immunohistochemical presentation, the diagnosis of endometriosis-associated recto-sigmoid cancer was confirmed. The patient was treated with adjuvant chemotherapy for 6 months. During the follow-up appointment 22 months later, there was clinical and radiographic evidence of recurrence in the rectum. The patient received chemotherapy again and will receive another surgery after two more cycles of chemotherapy.

Bowel endometriosis is invariably associated with other significant endometriosis (eg endometrioma/chocolate cysts, or adenomyosis). Bowel endometriosis tends to slowly and progressively worsen in women who are pre-menopausal. It is rare for the bowel to be obstructed by endometriosis.. When the bowel is involved, there is generally a range of symptoms that a patient may experience; in particular, a cyclic change in bowel habit (diarrhoea, constipation or both) or cyclic bowel pain, always worst when the period is due. Women with bowel-related endometriosis will almost invariably have reduced fertility. Sometimes it is necessary to correct the pelvic and bowel endometriosis before a woman can conceive naturally. It is usual for patients with documented bowel endometriosis to experience back pain, sex pain and ovulation pain.. Investigating bowel pain by pelvic ultrasound scan or MRI scan is always a good starting point. The scan must be very specific, by an ultrasonologist or radiologist trained ...

OBJECTIVES: To study bowel ischaemia in transfemorally placed endoluminal grafting (TPEG) for abdominal aortic aneurysms, and any relation to cytokine response or postoperative fever. DESIGN: Prospective not randomised. University hospital setting. MATERIAL: Fourteen cases of conventional surgery and 23 cases of endovascular technique for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. METHODS: Tonometry was used for sigmoid colon pH, and ELISAs for serum IL-6. RESULTS: Mucosal pH in the sigmoid colon fell significantly during clamping and reperfusion in both groups. Lowest measured sigmoid colon pH was 7.10 in the open group, compared to 7.22 in the TPEG group (p , 0.05). The IL-6 levels in serum peaked after 4 h of reperfusion; 249 pg/ml in the open group, compared to 89 pg/ml in the TPEG group (p , 0.05). High levels of IL-6 in the postoperative period and persisting low sigmoidal pH were associated with serious complications. Postoperative temperature did not differ significantly between the ...
During an end sigmoid diversion colostomy, the end of the sigmoid colon is brought through the abdominal wall, where it may be turned under, like a cuff. The edges of the colon are then stitched to the skin of the abdominal wall to form an opening called a stoma. Stool drains from the stoma into a bag or pouch attached to the abdomen.
Paul Hengens recent TIBS column (February 1997) has prompted me to clarify points regarding our observation that wooden toothpicks inhibit PCR reactions using Taq or Vent polymerase (BioTechniques 18, 225 1995). We previously used wooden toothpicks to transfer bacterial colonies directly to PCR reactions for screening. It wasnt until we tried to reduce enzyme costs by lowing the amount of Taq per reaction that we noticed inhibition of the reaction by wooden toothpicks. The point of the paper is that by using plastic rather than wood, the amount of enzyme can be significantly reduced resulting in a significant savings for labs that do a lot of screening. We were not saying that all PCR reactions are inhibited by wooden toothpicks, only those using relatively small amounts of enzyme. My guess is that those who have no problems using wooden toothpicks could use less enzyme if they switched to plastic. This is a great technique whether you use wooden toothpicks with more enzyme or plastic ...
The colon extends from the end of the ileum to the rectum. The cecum, ascending colon, hepatic flexure, and proximal transverse colon comprise the right colon. The distal transverse colon, splenic flexure, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectosigmoid comprise the left colon (Figure 30-1). The ascending and descending portions are fixed to the retroperitoneum, and the transverse colon and sigmoid colon are suspended in the peritoneal cavity by their mesocolons. The caliber of the lumen is greatest at the cecum and diminishes distally. The wall of the colon has four layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa (Figure 30-2). The muscularis propria consists of an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer. The longitudinal muscle completely encircles the colon in a very thin layer, and at three points around the circumference it is gathered into thick bands called taeniae coli. Sacculations (haustra) are the result of shortening of the colon by the taeniae and contractions of ...

From the small bowel, the residual material drains into the large intestine (or colon). The colon is about 6 feet in length and begins with the cecum, extends into the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, the sigmoid colon and finally the rectum and anus. The function of the colon is to absorb water and salts and bacteria also interacts with the liquid waste matter in the colon assisting with the conversion to feces or stool. This interaction with bacteria contributes to the formation of gas or flatus. Stool is stored primarily in the descending colon and sigmoid colon where it moves into the rectum ...
