Iridocorneal Endothelial (ICE) syndrome has three main features: (1) visible changes in the iris, the colored part of the eye that regulates the amount of light entering the eye; (2) swelling of the cornea; and (3) the development of glaucoma, a disease that can cause severe vision loss when normal fluid inside the eye cannot drain properly. ICE is usually present in only one eye.

Abstract: : Purpose: There are two known isoforms of cyclooxygenase (COX): COX-1 is relatively ubiquitously and constitutively expressed, whereas COX-2 has been shown to be robustly induced in various acute, inflammatory-induced pathologies. COX-2 has been detected in sites of inflammation related to a variety of immune and ulcerative diseases, and COX-2 derived eicosanoids have been implicated in local tissue destruction. Despite the plethora of reports on COX-2 in systemic inflammation, its expression has not been characterized in the normal cornea or inflammatory corneal pathologies. Methods: Appropriate IRB approval was obtained to examine corneal buttons from keratoplasty patients exhibiting both acute and resolved inflammation. All specimens were embedded in paraffin and originated from the University of Illinois-Chicago Eye Center. The six specimens included acute fungal infection (2), autoimmune keratolysis (2), alkali burn with keratolysis (1), and quiescent interstitial keratitis with ...

Peripheral neuropathy is a problem that plagues 20 million Americans and its a huge problem with chemotherapy, says HealthQuest founder, Dr. Sol Cogan. The chemotherapeutic drugs, although they can be important at certain times to save your life from the cancer, can really wreak havoc on the body.. The pain caused by Martas neuropathy has been overwhelming at times. Shes experienced sharp pains that she likens to being stabbed as well as sensations that are similar to electric shocks. But, thanks to the treatments shes received at HealthQuest, Marta has noticed significant improvements.. They do things to my hands and back and my hips and my feet, Marta says. Everythings helping.. Her treatment includes wearing gloves that give off pulsating electrodes, as well as placing her feet in a pulsating foot bath. She also receives regular adjustments. Not only is Marta feeling better, she now also has peace of mind. Shes no longer afraid of the pain, and thats made a big difference in the ...

The treatment for Cogans is dependent on the severity of the problem. The first step is to lubricate the cornea with artificial tears to keep the surface smooth and comfortable. Lubricating ointments are recommended at bedtime so the eyes are more comfortable in the morning. Salt solution drops or ointments such as sodium chloride are often prescribed to reduce swelling and improve vision. Gas permeable contacts are occasionally fit for patients with irregular astigmatism to create a smooth, even corneal surface and improve vision ...
Coming this summer is Knife Music, a new thriller from David Carnoy. Heres a sneak preview from Booklist: David Carnoy injects an uncommon level of medical expertise, from physical trauma through hospital hierarchy, into his fine debut thriller about the fraught world of doctors. The novel certainly works as medical drama, but it is also a gripping detective story and a revealing character study about what makes docs tick. We learn, for example, that many doctors lack of empathy can be seen as stemming from the fact that they were trapped in labs and libraries during the crucial social-skills-gaining years. One such doctor may be Ted Cogan, a surgeon, who is questioned by detectives after the death of one of his former patients, a female high-school sophomore. Cogan saved her life after a car accident six months before. Now the girl has taken her own life, and a trail of evidence points to a sexual relationship with Cogan and a motive for him to have killed her. Veteran detective Hank Madden, ...
A commonly encountered difficulty with the genetic engineering of crop plants is that different varieties of a particular species can show great variability in the efficiency with which they can be transformed. This increases the effort required to introduce transgenes into particular genetic backgrounds. The use of Substitution Lines has allowed the finer mapping of three Quantitative Trait Loci (tf1, tf2 and tf3) that explain 26% of the variation in the efficiency of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in Brassica oleracea. Use of an orthogonal set of genotypes (containing all eight possible combinations of positive and negative alleles at the three QTL), along with time course studies of transgene expression, has allowed the determination of the stages at which these genes have their effects during transformation. With regard to control of the level of transient transgene expression, tf1 (on LGO1) alone has no detectable effect, whilst tf2 (on LGO3) and tf3 (on LGO7) have highly significant
Winner of the 2016 Cogan Award Botond Roska, senior group leader at the FMI and project-leader for the NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering, is a renowned expert in the structure and function of retinal circuits in health and disease. His work has contributed in both a fundamental and highly original manner to our understanding of the function of retinal circuits. In addition, he has used his knowledge of retinal processing and the newly available optogenetic tools to reactivate retinal function, at least partially, in mouse models of blinding retinal diseases. Together with scientist from around the world, but particularly the Vision Institute in Paris, he currently tries to bring this method of vision restoration to patients with retinitis pigmentosa, and other late-onset adult blindness diseases. The 2016 Cogan Award from the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology now recognizes and highlights these outstanding contributions to the field. With this he joins Ted Drya and Connie ...

Despite the lack of published data other reactions of reactive monodendrons with different living polymers could be easily envisioned. The use of dendrimers in this type of coupling will be discussed later. The living polystyrene is undoubtedly a versatile reagent for the synthesis of LDBCs, but it requires work at low temperatures, vacuum or inert atmosphere and elaborate laboratory techniques. ^ Therefore alternative strategies were tested in order to facilitate the production of LDBS in ...
Killing Them Softly is a film about incompetent gangsters. Seriously, these gangs certainly arent The Sopranos. We feel for Brad Pitts hitman Jackie Cogan, who is exasperated when he learns the very people he is tracking down almost want to be caught. When you see Cogans frustration, you might even think hes annoyed that theyve made his job too easy. The general stupidity of the gangsters gives the film a darkly witty tone, but when it drifts into social commentary, Killing Them Softly loses sight of what it wants to be.. As a basic gangster movie, this really does get it spot on. It has a delicate blend of old fashioned and modern techniques, that evoke memories of David Mamet while still feeling fresh. And yet, Andrew Dominik doesnt seem satisfied with this. He has to inject social commentary by setting the film in the backdrop of the 2008 Presidential Election. Its like the country has a hangover, but it doesnt say as much about the condition of America as it thinks it does. ...

Protein synthesis and degradation are posttranscriptional pathways used by cells to regulate protein levels. We have developed a systems biology approach to identify targets of posttranscriptional regulation and we have employed this system in Saccharomyces cerevisiae to study the DNA damage response. We present evidence that 50% to 75% of the transcripts induced by alkylation damage are regulated posttranscriptionally. Significantly, we demonstrate that two transcriptionally-induced DNA damage response genes, RNR1 and RNR4, fail to show soluble protein level increases after DNA damage. To determine one of the associated mechanisms of posttranscriptional regulation, we tracked ribonucleotide reductase 1 (Rnr1) protein levels during the DNA damage response. We show that RNR1 is actively translated after damage and that a large fraction of the corresponding Rnr1 protein is packaged into a membrane-bound structure and transported to the vacuole for degradation, with these last two steps dependent ...
In typical Trumpian fashion, it turns out that the morality tale he was trying to tell was just made up. Thats what Page Six has been told by the restaurants former CEO Ken Aretsky and former owner Marshall Cogan, who did not mince words in saying, I have no idea what was in his head. I never have. [...]. Not only did the renovation take half as long as Trump claimed, but Aretsky says they never hired a consultant. The kitchen was 60 years old at the time, ancient by restaurant standards, and they did put in all new equipment and ductwork. Aretsky says that hes proud of the job I did, but got a great kick out of Trumps story. At least someone was amused. As for why Trump spun this yarn? Cogan says that he thinks the president has a psychological problem that only a therapist can define for you. I cant. ...

by James Cogan (Biofuels Digest) Europes bioethanol association ePure just released a renewables policy paper thats something to get excited about.. Its a show of confidence and ambition on the part of Europes ethanol CEOs. Their product delivers climate and bioeconomy benefits, it doesnt come with adverse side effects and it is worth fighting for.. Current 2015 EU ethanol sector output of 5.8 billion litres equates to 3 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe).. The new ePure scenario proposes 6.5 Mtoe of ILUC compliant conventional ethanol plus 2.5 Mtoe of advanced for 2030 (or whenever practicable), which is 9Mtoe. This is virtually a growth parity vision, with conventional and second generation varieties sharing roughly similar growth volumes, taking a big chunk out of fossil petrol and making sure lots of fossil carbon stays where it belongs.. …. Ethanol in Europe is currently yielding 65% certified average greenhouse gas savings over oil, and on a trajectory to 100% by 2030. So ...

After Liam was born, he became a real person and not a diagnosis.. As many people reading this know, finding out something is wrong with your baby in pregnancy is like being plucked off land and dropped in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. No boat, no life vest, no sense of direction. You just try not to panic so you can float. Time passes slowly. At times you are so sad, you just feel like you are drifting aimlessly. Then other times, you are so scared its like every direction you turn, sharks are circling your dangling feet. And then there are the hopeful moments when you feel strong enough to keep swimming.. This is how I felt after October 16, 2015, 18 weeks pregnant with our first baby, when we learned he had spina bifida. So many pervasive questions and paralyzingly thoughts from various points of view kept loitering in my head. Did I cause this? Will I be able to keep working? Will we have enough money if I cant work?. Am I capable of mothering a kid with special needs? Could my ...

PURPOSE: To manufacture and test a set of phase plates for the calibration of ocular aberrometers and apply it to the calibration of an ocular laser ray tracing aberrometer. METHODS: The set of phase plates is made by a greyscale single-mask photosculpture in photoresist method. Each plate induces a given amount of a particular aberration (Zernike) mode. The set contains two subsets: 1) pure Zernike modes to test the accuracy among different orders (from 3rd to 7th, approximately 0.3 to 0.4 μm); and 2) plates having different amounts of the same mode, 3rd order coma ranging from 0.11 to 0.47 μm. After manufacturing, the plates were tested twice, as a crosscheck, measuring the aberration pattern of each plate with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a single-pass Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. The set was then applied to the calibration of an ocular double-pass laser ray tracing aberrometer. RESULTS: Close agreement was found between the three types of measurement. The maximum difference ...
Background: Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) has been employed as a surgical tool to treat corneal disease for more than 10 years. The laser has made it possible to remove superficial corneal opacities and thereby restore vision. The 193 nm ultraviolet light separates molecules and splits molecules in biological tissue, thereby ablating it. About 0.25 ╡m of tissue is ablated by each pulse. The development of the excimer laser technique has been fast. It has principally focused on refractive surgery but has also benefited PTK. Corneal dystrophies: The ability to delay or postpone corneal grafting in superficial corneal dystrophies represents a very important achievement. Map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy or basal membrane dystrophy is a common indication for PTK. Other dystrophies such as Meesmans, Reis-Bⁿcklers, Thiel-Benkes, granular, macular, lattice and Schnyders can be treated, although with differing degrees of success and varying rates of recurrence. TP53BP1 is a DNA damage response protein that acts to preserve genomic integrity through the non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway. BRCA1 mouse mutants result in embryonic lethality and hypomorphic BRCA1 mice and heterozygous for TP53 have slower growth rates and display signs of premature ageing [37]. These phenotypes are almost completely reverted in double knockout mice lacking TP53BP1. The mutant mice showed an almost normal lifespan and displayed a relative absence of various progeroid phenotypes, even though high levels of genomic instability were still observed [2186]. In humans, TP53BP1 has also been implicated in various forms of cancer [2191]. As TP53BP1 is involved in DNA damage responses, along with TP53, ATM and other ageing-associated players, and it might play a role during human ageing. ...
The changes in cheeses texture depend on the kind (species of origin) and chemical composition of milk, the technological routine and ripening conditions [8]. The research done by Sur wka [13] has showed the differentiation in texture of Polish ripening cheeses depending of their kind. Paciorek [10] has stated that properties of oszczypki cheeses produced from raw, not pasteurised milk differed from cheeses in oszczypki type, produced from ewes pasteurised milk. Balcones et al. [1], Calvo and Espinoza [5] found that the level of pasteurisation temperature influences the curd structure. In the opinion of Green & Grandison [7] the higher pasteurisation temperature of milk the more water is left in the curd. Some other researchers [10,2] have pointed that also the kind of starter added influences significantly some ewes cheeses properties. Cogan and Daly [6] concern that thermophilic rods show higher fermentative activity than mesophilic and thermophilic cocci that determines the time of ripening ...
