NIOSHTIC-2 Publications Search - 20022523 - Airborne microbial ecology in an underground coal mine.
Underground coal mines may be an environment with exposures to airborne fungi and bacteria. The environments are often water-laden due to dust-suppression systems, ground water seepage and/or high relative humidities. We investigated the airborne microbial ecology at the longwall face of an underground coal mine. Samples for bacteria and fungi in air were collected in duplicate on 0.2 micrometer p
Large Numbers Of Birth Defects Seen Near Mountaintop Mining Operations - Redorbit
Study is 1 of first to see outsized health effects on nearby residents. Birth defects are significantly more common in areas of mountaintop coal mining and are on the rise as the practice becomes more common, according to a study by researchers at Washington State University and West Virginia University.. The researchers, led by Melissa Ahern, health economist and associate professor in WSUs College of Pharmacy, found 235 birth defects per 10,000 births where mountaintop mining is most common in four central Appalachian states. Thats nearly twice the rate of 144 defects per 10,000 in non-mining areas.. Previous studies have found low birth weights and increased levels of adult disease and death in coal mining areas. This study offers one of the first indications that health problems are disproportionately concentrated specifically in mountaintop mining areas.. The findings contribute to the growing evidence that mountaintop mining is done at substantial expense to the environment, to local ...

The late West Virginia activist on fighting to save her home from mountaintop removal coal mining.. Yet, while EPA administrator Lisa Jackson has openly admitted the unacceptable health consequences of mountaintop removal, the Obama administration has chosen to follow an admittedly failed compliance policy and 40-year record of criminally neglectful regulatory practices that have left central Appalachian communities in desperate ruin. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that mining permits are being issued despite the preponderance of scientific evidence that impacts are pervasive and irreversible and that mitigation cannot compensate for the losses.. While providing less than 5-8 percent of our national coal production, the millions of pounds of daily explosives detonated for mountaintop removal operations in West Virginia, Kentucky, southwest Virginia and eastern Tennessee have resulted in nothing less than the unrecognized reality of regulated child abuse and manslaughter. A recent ...

Coal Mining Machinery Causing Excessive Noise: Worker Deafness Claims UK | Accident Claim Solicitors
There are various different types of machinery used in the coal mining industry which produce excessive noise. The type of machinery used can often depend on the type of mine which is in operation - compare an open cast mine with a deep pit mine and compare working on the surface with working underground.. Some of the typical machinery used underground in coal mining which is known to produce damage to hearing to miners, include:. 1. Face shearers. This machinery is known to produce noise levels sometimes as high as 120 DB and is used to cut along the face of the coal seam - allowing the coal to collapse into a space beneath whilst miners remain at a safe distance in areas supported by beams.. This technique of coal mining is sometimes known as long wall mining as the face shearer runs along the length of the coal face in an underground mine.. 2. Heading cutters. Heading cutters are a type of boring machinery used to bore out tracks in mines for trains to operate along and for other facilities ...
Valuing the Non-Market Impacts of Underground Coal Mining - AgEcon Search
A strategic inquiry into underground coal mining in New South Wales, Australia, identified the need for non-market valuation studies and recommended increased use of benefit cost analysis in assessing individual mining proposals. This paper reports on the results of a choice experiment undertaken for a mine in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales. Results from the study are used to aid the government decision by evaluating alternative proposals to continue underground coal mining operations. Results show that community wellbeing declines with increases in the kilometres of streams, the hectares of swamp, and the number of Aboriginal sites affected by mine subsidence. Community wellbeing increases with the length of time that the mine provides 320 jobs. Implicit price estimates from the choice experiment were incorporated into a benefit cost analysis of continued mining at the mine to assess the economic efficiency of a range of environmental restrictions on the proposed mining operations. Even
Plan targets fallout from mountaintop mining
The whole permitting process has become much more complicated, more uncertain, and it is clearly going to take longer, said Carol Raulston, a spokeswoman for the National Mining Association. Hours before the announcement, Obama administration officials called regulators in the affected states to deliver a much different message. The purposes stated today was to actually make (the permit process) more effective, make it more efficient, make it more transparent. And say yes more quickly and no more quickly, said Len Peters, Kentuckys energy and environmental secretary. President Barack Obama, as a candidate, expressed concern about the mountaintop mining although he stopped short of calling for an outright ban. His administration has cast a more critical eye on the process than did the Bush administration, which was accused of granting permits with little scrutiny. In March, the EPA announced it would more take a closer look at about 150 mountaintop mining permits pending before the Army Corps ...

Tuberculosis in coal mine workers in Mpumalanga.
Introduction Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a disease which is both curable and preventable, with recognised complications such loss of lung function and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). It is a major cause of pulmonary disability and mortality in the South Africa mining industry. Tuberculosis has a high social and economic cost, both for the individual concerned and for the industry as a whole. However, notwithstanding the extensive literature on TB in the mining industry, given the size and economic importance of coal mining in South Africa, there is surprisingly scanty information available on TB and other occupational lung diseases in coal mines. A strong correlation was reported in Canada, the USA and China between coal usage and TB. This highlights the possibility of the direct impact of coal usage on TB. Although black miners have historically done jobs with the highest exposure in the coal mining industry, there have been remarkably few studies reporting the prevalence of TB and the ...

CDC - Mining - Summary of Longwall and Continuous Miner Section - NIOSH
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in mine workers, especially underground coal miners, continues to be a problem in the mining industry. The recently enacted MSHA noise standard, Part 62 - Occupational Noise Exposure (Federal Register, 1999), is aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures to address NIHL in various aspects of coal mining including surface mining, coal preparation plants and underground mining. In underground bituminous coal mining, noise surveys, consisting of full-shift worker noise exposure, time-motion studies and equipment noise profiling, have been completed on longwall and continuous miner sections in six underground coal mines. The studies revealed widely varying shift-to-shift worker exposures, with workers in certain occupations routinely exposed to potentially hazardous levels of noise. A summary of these studies ...

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is offering a series of free, confidential health screenings to coal miners throughout the United States.. The screenings are intended to provide early detection of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP), also known as black lung, a serious but preventable occupational lung disease in coal miners caused by breathing respirable coal mine dust.. The health screenings will be provided through the state-of-the-art NIOSH mobile testing unit at convenient community and mine locations.. NIOSH will provide the health screening for these coal miners under its Enhanced Coal Workers Health Surveillance Program. This public health outreach is in response to a well-documented increase in serious disease, and in response to new regulations requiring that health screenings be offered to surface miners.. This years first focus started the week of April 11 and ends on May 20, 2016, in coal mining regions throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, ...
Coal mining - Academic Kids
Other methods of mining include continuous highwall mining and highwall auger mining. These methods are generally applied in an open cast mine, once open cut mining becomes uneconomic. Coal mining historically, has been a very dangerous activity. Open cut hazards are principally slope failure, underground mining roof collapse and gas explosions. Most of these risks can be greatly reduced in modern mines, and multiple fatality incidents are now rare in the developed world. Improvements in mining methods ie. longwall mining, gas drainage and ventilation have reduced many of these risks. In lesser developed countries, thousands still die in coal mines. China in particular is the world leader in coal mining related deaths, with official estimates of around 6000 fatalities in 2004. Unofficial estimates place the figure much higher, at around 20,000 deaths. China is also the world leader in coal production and consumption. Chronic lung diseases, such as pneumoconiosis are common to miners, causing a ...

MSHA Webinar: Blurring the lines: Will Coal Mine Operators Become Mine Inspectors?
On August 6, 2012, MSHAs final rule on Examinations of Work Areas in Underground Coal Mines for Violations of Mandatory Health or Safety Standards takes effect. Implementation of the final rule marks the end of an 18-year crusade by MSHA to revise pre-shift, on-shift, weekly, and supplemental examination of nine regulations to include a requirement that operators examine, identify, and correct violations of mandatory health and safety standards. Historically, federal regulations have required underground coal mine operators to employ certified mine examiners to conduct examinations for hazardous conditions, and to test for methane and oxygen deficiency and determine if air is moving in the proper direction and at normal volumes ...

What is driving the spike in black lung disease among coal miners? | UIC Today
Rates of severe coal workers pneumoconiosis - also known as black lung disease - among coal miners have been on the rise recently despite regulations on exposure to dusts associated with mining. Researchers believe the higher rates of more severe lung disease may be due to greater exposure to silica, likely as a byproduct of going after ever-narrowing coal seams that require cutting through more rock to reach. Silica dust is much more toxic to the lungs, but little is known about its contribution to black lung disease at the molecular level, and researchers dont know how silica and coal or other dusts together might interact to influence the development of disease.. A new $750,000 grant from the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mining Safety and Health will support researchers in the University of Illinois at Chicago Mining Education and Research Center working to find out how various mining dusts contribute to lung disease. The center, which is housed in the UIC School of Public ...

Coal mine rules changes to go into effect this summer, draw criticism
GRAND JUNCTION - New coal mining rules that go into effect in August are designed to decrease the hundreds of deaths that still occur from black lung disease. But the costly new rules are not popular with all miners and mine operators.. Officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration spent more than five hours Thursday explaining the new regulations to dozens of coal mine operators and miners. The gathering in Grand Junction was the last of a series of seven meetings held around the country in states with coal mines.. We still see miners getting black lung, said Kevin Stricklan, administrator of Coal Mine Safety and Health for MSHA. Two hundred and eighty people die every year from respirable illness. Since 1968, over 76,000 miners have died.. To drop the numbers of what is medically called pneumoconiosis and to cut the $45 billion paid out in federal compensation, MSHA is instituting the first changes to coal mine dust rules since 1969.. Surface Composition of Respirable Silica Particles in a Set of U.S. An by J. C. Harrison, P. S. Brower et al.
Respirable particles of high-percentage silica content from anthracite and bituminous coal mine dust samples were analyzed for aluminosilicate clay surface coating, by measuring silicon and aluminum X-ray spectra using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS). Silicon and aluminum elemental ratios were determined with incident electron energies of 20 and 5 keV to reveal whether surface occlusion was present. Some 20 respirable-sized, non-agglomerated particles with silicon fraction of signal of 75% or more (for elements above sodium) were analyzed for each of 12 coal mine dust samples. Mine dust samples were from U.S. anthracite and bituminous coal mining regions involved in epidemiological studies of the U.S. National Study of Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis. Some particles of high-percentage silica content exhibited a decrease in the ratio of silicon-to-aluminum K-alpha line intensities with decreasing electron beam accelerating voltage, consistent with aluminosilicate clay

Mountaintop Mining Poisons Fish Supply - Organic Authority
Mountaintop mining involves blasting off the top of a mountain so excess rock can be pushed to a neighboring valley. This allows miners to more easily reach coal. The eco-obnoxious practice, which has doubled in the last 8 years, has buried more than 1,000 miles of Appalachian streams over the last 20 years. Now, residents in states like West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky are finding huge numbers of dead and deformed fish, a result of toxic selenium that leaches into rivers and streams. High selenium levels threaten fish survival and reproduction, and contaminated fish have offspring with serious birth defects-from crooked spines to deformed heads. Ultimately, the fish population could be wiped out. Selenium pollution affects fish first, so they serve as a barometer for future damage to ecosystems and human health. ...
Investor Malasia Looking Coal Mining In Indonesia
During the lucrative 2000s commodities boom many new coal mining companies were established in Indonesia while existing coal miners raised investment to expand production capacity. This caused a severe supply glut that was exacerbated by coal miners eagerness in the years 2010-2013 to produce and sell as much coal as possible - amid low global coal prices - in order to generate revenue and profit.. ...
Particle sizing of coal mine dust by pattern recognition of laser diffraction | (1996) | Zhao | Publications | Spie
Particle sizing by laser diffraction provides a prospective method for real-time detection of weight and size information of coal mine dust. Quickness, accuracy and ability to measure total and respirable dust weighs are some of the basic requirements for inversion method of the coal mine dust transducer. This paper presents a quick inversion scheme that can be referred to as pattern recognition of laser diffraction field. Single-chip computer system simulation results show that this method not only furnishes excellent estimates of both total and respirable dust weights in a very short time but also features high anti- noise ability and stability ...
Mountaintop removal mining - Wikipedia
Critics contend that MTR is a destructive and unsustainable practice that benefits a small number of corporations at the expense of local communities and the environment. Though the main issue has been over the physical alteration of the landscape, opponents to the practice have also criticized MTR for the damage done to the environment by massive transport trucks, and the environmental damage done by the burning of coal for power. Blasting at MTR sites also expels dust and fly-rock into the air, which can disturb or settle onto private property nearby. This dust may contain sulfur compounds, which corrodes structures and is a health hazard.[33] A January 2010 report in the journal Science reviews current peer-reviewed studies and water quality data and explores the consequences of mountaintop mining. It concludes that mountaintop mining has serious environmental impacts that mitigation practices cannot successfully address.[34] For example, the extensive tracts of deciduous forests destroyed by ...

Underground Coal Mining: Relationship between Coal Dust Levels and Pneumoconiosis, in Two Regions of Colombia, 2014
In Colombia, coal miner pneumoconiosis is considered a public health problem due to its irreversibility, high cost on diagnosis, and lack of data related to its prevalence in the country. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of pneumoconiosis in underground coal mining workers in two regions of Colombia. The results showed a 35.9% prevalence of pneumoconiosis in the study group (42.3% in region 1 and 29.9% in region 2). An association was found between a radiologic diagnosis of pneumoconiosis and a medium risk level of exposure to carbon dust (OR: 2.901, 95% CI: 0.937, 8.982), medium size companies (OR: 2.301, 95% CI: 1.260–4.201), length of mining work greater than 25 years (OR: 3.222, 95% CI: 1.806–5.748), and a history of smoking for more than one year (OR: 1.479, 95% CI: 0.938–2.334). Progressive massive fibrosis - Wikipedia
Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF), characterized by the development of large conglomerate masses of dense fibrosis (usually in the upper lung zones), can complicate silicosis and coal workers pneumoconiosis. Conglomerate masses may also occur in other pneumoconioses, such as talcosis, berylliosis (CBD), kaolin pneumoconiosis, and pneumoconiosis from carbon compounds, such as carbon black, graphite, and oil shale. Conglomerate masses can also develop in sarcoidosis, but usually near the hilae and with surrounding paracitricial emphysema. The disease arises firstly through the deposition of silica or coal dust (or other dust) within the lung, and then through the bodys immunological reactions to the dust. According to the International Labour Office (ILO), PMF requires the presence of large opacity exceeding 1 cm (by x-ray). By pathology standards, the lesion in histologic section must exceed 2 cm to meet the definition of PMF. In PMF, lesions most commonly occupy the upper lung zone, and are ...

Small-for-Gestational Age Prevalence Risk Factors in Central Appalachi by Hamid Ferdosi, Steve H Lamm et al.
OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors for small-for-gestational age (SGA) for counties in central Appalachian states (Kentucky (KY), Tennessee (TN), Virginia (VA), and West Virginia (WV)) with varied coal mining activities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Live birth certificate files (1990-2002) were used for obtaining SGA prevalence rates for mothers based on the coal mining activities of their counties of residence, mountain-top mining (MTM) activities, underground mining activities but no mountain-top mining activity (non-MTM), or having no mining activities (non-mining). Co-variable information, including maternal tobacco use, was also obtained from the live birth certificate. Adjusted odds ratios were obtained using multivariable logistic regression comparing SGA prevalence rates for counties with coal mining activities to those without coal mining activities and comparing SGA prevalence rates for counties with coal mining activities for those with and without mountain-top mining activities. A Discrete Event Simulation and Data-Based Framework for Equipment Performance Evaluation in Underground Coal Mining
2021, Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc.Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the efficiency of the system by investigating the effects of operational factors on equipment. This paper investigates the shearer performance for a longwall top coal caving operation by discrete event simulation that includes modeling the double-drum shearer, belt conveyors, stage loader, and armored face conveyors (AFC) to evaluate system performance by considering the amount of daily coal production of the shearer. As a result, the most influential factor on mine production is determined and a ...

It wasnt supposed to happen to coal miners in Mark McCowans generation. It wasnt supposed to strike so early and so hard. At age 47 and just seven years after his first diagnosis, McCowan shouldnt have a chest X-ray that looks this bad.. Im seeing more definition in the mass, McCowan says, pausing for deep breaths as he holds the X-ray film up to the light of his living room window in Pounding Mill, Va.. The mass is larger and more defined in the right upper lobe, he continues, clinically describing the solid streak that shows up white on the X-ray of his lungs. If you know white is bad and black is good, Im in a lot of trouble.. McCowan went from a clean X-ray at age 35 to progressive massive fibrosis - an advanced stage of coal workers pneumoconiosis, or black lung - in just five years.. You go from being normal to where … one day you try to do something you used to do, and you cant do it and youre just heaving to catch your breath, McCowan says. And you say this is crazy. ...
Minerals | Free Full-Text | Coupling Effect of Intruding Water and Inherent Gas on Coal Strength Based on the Improved (Mohr...
When employing hydraulic processes to increase gas drainage efficiency in underground coal mines, coal seams become a three-phase medium, containing water intruding into the coal pores with the inherent occurrence of gas. This can change the stress state of the coal and cause instability. This work studied the mechanical properties of coal containing water and gas and derived an appropriate failure criterion. Based on mixture theory of unsaturated porous media, the effective stress of coal, considering the interaction of water and gas, was analyzed, and the failure criterion established by combining this with the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. By introducing the stress factor of matrix suction and using fitted curves of experimentally determined matrix suction and moisture content, the relationships between coal strength, gas pressure, and moisture content were determined. To verify the established strength theory, a series of triaxial compression strength tests of coal containing water and gas were carried
When Kentucky mines reopen, coal will come back - Alex Coal Mine
Kentuckys coal mines have been shut down for weeks after the state began cracking down on leaks and explosions.. But the mines reopened Friday.. The coal industry will resume operations as planned.. Gov.. Matt Bevin said he is not calling a special session to pass a new bill to reopen the states coal industry.. But he is calling on the state legislature to convene to consider the idea.. We need to get the ball rolling, Bevin told reporters.. This is something that is absolutely critical for our economy.. The states economy is already strong and we need to have the confidence that Kentuckys economy can go forward and thrive in the 21st century, he added.. Bevin has proposed a bill that would extend the coal industrys operating hours.. The legislation, which would be voted on in the Kentucky House on Thursday, would provide the state with a one-time $2 billion budget to allow the state to hire more coal miners and help businesses recover from the shutdown.. Black lung claims by 1,100 coal miners may have been wrongly denied - Center for Public Integrity
In an extraordinary rebuke to a doctor at one of Americas top hospitals, the U.S. Department of Labor has informed about 1,100 coal miners that their claims for black lung benefits may have been wrongly denied because of the actions of a powerful physician at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the departments deputy secretary told senators Tuesday.. That doctor, Paul S. Wheeler, systematically found that miners did not have black lung when, in fact, many of them did. Medical opinions by the doctor should be assumed not to be credible, senators and affected miners were told.. The governments outreach and the Senate hearing were both prompted by a series of stories released last year by The Center for Public Integrity in partnership with ABC News.. Miners who get black lung, a debilitating and incurable disease caused by breathing in coal dust, are entitled by federal law to compensation, often from their former employer. But the series, which was the result of a yearlong investigation, ...

Coal mining - Wikipedia
Coal was mined in America in the early 18th century, and commercial mining started around 1730 in Midlothian, Virginia.[69]. The American share of world coal production remained steady at about 20 percent from 1980 to 2005, at about 1 billion short tons per year. The United States was ranked as the second highest coal producing country in the world in 2010, and possesses the largest coal reserves in the world. In 2008 then-President George W. Bush stated that coal was the most reliable source of electricity.[70] However, in 2011 President Barack Obama said that the US should rely more on clean sources of energy that emit lower or no carbon dioxide pollution.[71] For a time, while domestic coal consumption for electric power was being displaced by natural gas, exports were increasing.[72] US net coal exports increased ninefold from 2006 to 2012, peaked at 117 million short tons in 2012, then declined to 63 million tons in 2015. In 2015, 60% of net US exports went to Europe, 27% to Asia.US coal ...

Deadly 1921 coal miner revolt in West Virginia remembered - ABC4 Utah
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Fed up with poor wages, work and living conditions, thousands of coal miners a century ago marched in an effort to unionize in West Virginia, resulting in a deadly clash and the largest U.S. armed uprising since the Civil War. On Friday, some descendants of those involved will join others in retracing the steps that culminated in the 12-day Battle of Blair Mountain. The miners - whites, Blacks, and European immigrants - banded together, bent on doing something about their treatment by coal operators. They became known as the Red Neck Army for the distinctive bandanas they wore around their necks. At least 16 men died before the miners surrendered to federal troops in September 1921.. Bloody conflicts in the mining industry in the early 20th century, known as the West Virginia Mine Wars, have been overlooked in public schools. But recently Blair Mountain has received much greater attention in the public. In 2018, the Blair Mountain Battlefield was restored to the ...
Coal Industries Should Finally Adapt to Air Quality Standards - Electric Car Expert, Guru - Green Living Guy
1. Coal dust is a problem wherever there are coal mines or wherever coal is transported through residential areas and cities. That and other particulate matter released during the different processes involving coal can cause a number of health problems, some of them fatal, if in excess.. Very small particulate matter carried by the air can enter our lungs and affect our health, sometimes leading to hospitalisation. If the people breathing in this air already have lung problems, they are going to bear the brunt of it. Other health problems include black lung disease (or coalworkers pneumoconiosis) among miners and treatment plant workers, congestive heart failure, asthma attacks, chronic bronchitis and reduce life expectancy. Young children are also very susceptible to chronic lung problems. It has been found that coal trains passing through a citys outskirts can raise particulate air pollution by as much as 120% in many cases. Also, in general, coal trains were found to cause much more ...

However, in lesser developed countries and some developed countries, many miners continue to die annually, either through direct accidents in coal mines or through adverse health consequences from working under poor conditions. China, in particular, has the highest number of coal mining related deaths in the world, with official statistic 6,027 deaths in 2004. To compare, the USA reported 28 deaths in the same year. Coal production in China is twice that of the United States, while the number of coal miners is around 50 times that of the USA, making deaths in coal mines in China 4 times as common per worker (108 times as common per unit output) as in the USA ...

The Northampton Generating Facility is located in the anthracite coal mining region, in the Town of Northampton, Pennsylvania. The facility is designed to convert the anthracite mining refuse (culm or coal refuse) left over from decades of coal mining in the region into energy while also engaging in the remediation of the former refuse sites. Employing state-of-the art Ahlstrom Pyroflow circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler technology, the facility efficiently burns low BTU refuse in an environmentally safe and beneficial manner. Along with other coal refuse reclamation to energy facilities, Northampton provides a unique and profound environmental benefit by consuming coal refuse from mining activities as well as from abandoned coal refuse piles. As a consequence, abandoned mining sites can be reclaimed and restored to usable land and environmental damage from acid mine drainage, fugitive dust and harmful air emissions, along with human health and safety issues, derived from these coal refuse ...
