Waste oil fly ash (OFA) collected from disposal of power generation plants was treated by physicochemical activation technique to improve the surface properties of OFA. This synthesized material was further used for potential hydrogen sulfide (H2S) adsorption from synthetic natural gas. The raw OFA was basically modified with a mixture of acids (20% nitric acid [HNO3] and 80% phosphoric acid [H3PO4]), and it was further treated with 2 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) to enhance the surface affinity as well as surface area of synthesized activated carbon. Correspondingly, it enhanced the adsorption of H2S. Crystallinity, surface morphology, and pore volume distribution of prepared activated carbon were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. South African coal-fired power stations produce about 25 million tons of fly ash per annum, of which only approximately 5% is currently reused. A growing concern about pollution and increasing landfill costs stimulates research into new ways to utilize coal fly ash for economically beneficial applications. Fly ash particles may be used as inorganic filler in polymers, an application which generally requires the modification of their surface properties. In order to design experiments that will result in controlled changes in surface chemistry and morphology, a detailed knowledge of the bulk chemical and mineralogical compositions of untreated fly ash particles, as well as their morphology and surface properties, is needed. Medical experts at Oak Ridge Associated Universities and Vanderbilt University Medical Center released their findings today. "Over an eight-month period, we conducted independent comprehensive evaluations of more than 200 residents who opted to undergo a medical evaluation at no cost to the resident," said Donna Cragle, a Ph.D. epidemiologist and vice president of Occupational Exposure and Worker Health for ORAU. Owing to its importance in the assessment of reinforced concrete structures, it is essential to determine the chloride diffusivity of fly ash concrete. This paper presents an investigation into the diffusion characteristics of chloride ions in fly ash concrete. Through experiment, the relationship between chloride diffusivity and curing age up to 1800 days is measured and the effects of curing age, water/binder ratio, aggregate volume fraction, and fly ash content (i.e., percentage of total cementitious material by mass) on chloride diffusivity are evaluated. It is found that the chloride diffusivity decreases with the increase of curing age, aggregate volume fraction, and fly ash content, but increases with the increase of water/binder ratio. In analytical modeling, an equivalent aggregate model is constructed and the equivalent interfacial transition zone (ITZ) thickness is derived analytically. Abstract (EN): The approach to residual oil saturation during the immiscible displacement of oil as predicted by the multiphase Darcy equations is studied. It is well known that when the capillary pressure term is neglected, one arrives at the Buckley-Leverett formulation according to which the inlet face attains residual oil saturation instantaneously. This result may, however, be strongly influenced by the inclusion of the capillary pressure term. In this paper it is shown that when the relative permeability and capillary pressure functions have power law dependencies on the saturation deviation from residual oil condition, the long time solution exhibits a power law decay toward residual saturation. Moreover, the power law decay solution is found to be unique and independent of the initial condition. The relationship of this solution to the classical Buckley-Leverett result is shown. The pictures show that the contact angle for water displacing kerosene did not change with changes in velocity, but when kerosene surfactant solutions were used to change the wetting and interfacial tension, the contact angle increased with velocity. A synthetic core saturated with kerosene or kerosene surfactant solutions in the presence of minimum interstitial water and in adsorption equilibrium with the respective surfactant solution was water flooded at various rates. Changes in flood rate caused changes in the residual oil saturation, having opposite effects on the residual saturations for kerosene and kerosene surfactant solutions. Clay liners have been widely used to contain toxic and hazardous waste materials. Clays absorb contaminant cations due to their exchange capacity. To improve the performance of the clay liner, fly ash, a waste material arising from the combustion of coal has been studied as a pre-filter material. In particular, the retention of lead by two different fly ashes was studied. The influence of pH on retention as well as leaching characteristics are also examined. The results obtained from the retention experiments by the permeameter method indicate that fly ash retains the lead ions through precipitation in the pores as well as onto the surface when the ambient pH value is more than 5.5, and through adsorption when the pH value is less than 5.5. It has been observed that fly ash did not release the retained lead ions when the pH value is between 3.5 and 10.0.
