Background: Historically, the Rod of Asclepius is considered as the correct symbol of Medicine. Unfortunately, many medical/health institutions in the world have erroneously interchanged the Rod of Asclepius symbol with erroneous symbols (e.g. Caduceus) to depict Medicine. This study aims to assess the official logos (i.e. institutional symbols) of university teaching hospitals in Nigeria and determine if these logos actually depict the true symbol of Medicine.. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional online survey of teaching hospitals in Nigeria on their official logos. A total of 40,556 operating hospitals and clinics in Nigeria were identified. After systematic screening, a total of 35 hospitals were identified as university teaching hospitals and used for the survey. Official information about the geopolitical zone, ownership and official logo of the selected hospitals was obtained (via online and offline search). Data collected was analysed using SPSS version 22 software.. Results: Out ...

Natural resistance to infection, which does not depend on antibiotics, is a powerful protective mechanism common to all mankind that has been responsible for the survival of our species during countless millennia in the past. The normal functioning of this complex system of phagocytic cells and tissue fluids is entirely dependent on an extremely low level of free ionic iron (10−18 M) in tissue fluids. This low-iron environment is maintained by the unsaturated iron-binding proteins transferrin and lactoferrin, which depend on well-oxygenated tissues, where a relatively high oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) and pH are essential for the binding of ferric iron. Freely available iron is derived from iron overload, free haem compounds, or hypoxia in injured tissue leading to a fall in Eh and pH. This can severely damage or abolish normal bactericidal mechanisms in tissue fluids leading to overwhelming growth of bacteria or fungi. The challenge for clinical medicine is to reduce or eliminate the presence

This module is a student-led learning module in which students are provided with detailed guidance on the curriculum content to learn, however teaching is limited to graduate group sessions, sessions to support graduate group sessions, plenary sessions and Evidence based medicine sessions. Graduate Group Sessions: Two graduate group sessions per clinical topic week provide a structured format and facilitated session in which students can use group work to support their learning. The first session uses a trigger to introduce, contextualise and motivate learning from which students work together to identify and share prior knowledge, gaps in knowledge and concepts to develop for the rest of the week. Learning outcomes are provided at the end of the session to support students to facilitate their learning in the appropriate direction during the week but should be used by students alongside their own identified learning outcomes from the graduate group session. As the preventable disease and economic burden continues to mount for the United States and the world, it is becoming apparent that embracing prevention strategies is essential. Simply continuing on the same course and infrastructure will not suffice. The future we will leave our children is unsustainable without change. Amid all the partisan political chaos, integrative preventive medicine (IPM) practices are strongly entering the public consciousness, as many are dissatisfied with their traditional health (sick) care delivery systems and the scientific validity of IPM is increasing rapidly. This IPM textbook brings together the science of IPM so that health practitioners have a ready reference containing practices that can delay or prevent disease, decrease cost of care. and improve the quality of life. It is divided into three sections, Public Health and Evolving Science in IPM, Multidisciplinary Nature of IPM. and The IPM Approach of Selected Clinical Problems, providing a continuum of ...

Many forces have influenced the landscape in which medicine is practised. Modern healthcare faces the challenges of rising costs, increasing expectations and changing disease patterns. The physician may not realise that he has a powerful platform that can influence the delivery of healthcare, an area often subconsciously delegated to or blamed on healthcare administrators, insurance companies, pharmaceutical firms, lawyers, politicians, hospitals and even patients.(1) It was estimated that at least 60% of healthcare costs are influenced or determined by physicians.(2) More astounding is the knowledge that, at least in the United States, waste alone may account for 30% of overall healthcare costs.(3) In the era of modern diagnostics, we must not undervalue clinical skills that are sadly dying and in desperate need of resuscitation. Diagnostic tests are necessary, but overutilisation can harm both the sick and the healthy. A clear distinction must be made between what is done to and for the ...

Biobank Laboratory of the University of Łódź is a unit in the organizational structure of the Department of Molecular Biophysics at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, established by the Resolution of the Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of 25/03/2014.. Biobank Laboratory was created as one of the results of the TESTOPLEK project - full name Role of multidrug resistance proteins in pharmacokinetics and toxicology - in vitro tests in pharmaceutical and clinical practice (2008-2014) [3-5].. Over 10.000 individuals nationwide were canvassed to create a retrospective POPULOUS collection (POPUlation - LOdz UniverSity Biobank). The next step was the acquisition of collections of clinical samples, including breast cancer patients (BREAST), patients with pancreatic cancer (PANC), as well as a representative collection of samples from the school-age population from the city of Łódź (PUPILS). Since 2014, the unit belongs to the national ...
Oxford has particular strengths in bioinformatics and statistical genetics in the Department of Statistics and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, which is part of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine. Groups in these departments have developed many of the methods now used worldwide in genetic association studies in humans and rodent models and in high-throughput DNA sequence analysis. DNA and protein sequence analysis and functional annotation is concentrated in the Department of Statistics and the MRC Functional Genomics Unit. There is a strong tradition of protein structure analysis in several groups in Oxford, notably in the Structural Biology Division of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine and the Structural Bioinformatics and Computational Biochemistry Unit in the Department of Biochemistry. An exciting new development is the Big Data Institute, a centre of excellence for the analysis of large and complex data sets for health research aiming to develop, evaluate ...

Escalating prevalence of both diabetes and periodontal disease, two diseases associated with bidirectional exacerbation, has been reported. Periodontal disease represents a modifiable risk factor that may reduce diabetes onset or progression, and integrated models of cross-disciplinary care are needed to establish and manage glycemic control in affected patients. An ad-hoc environmental scan of current literature and media sought to characterize factors impacting status of integrated care models based on review of the existing evidence base in literature and media surrounding: 1) current cross-disciplinary practice patterns, 2) epidemiological updates, 3) status on risk assessment and screening for dysglycemia in the dental setting, 4) status on implementation of quality metrics for oral health, 5) care model pilots, and 6) public health perspectives ...
