Between January and February 2007, diel variability in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O) exchange with leaf temperature on four potted 5-year-old navel orange trees [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] on an open-air laboratory on the roof of the Physics Department (University of Zimbabwe) was measured. Two of the four trees were of the Baianinha variety while the other two were Navelina. An automated dynamic chamber (cuvette) was installed sequentially on each of the four trees with flux measurements on a selected branch of each tree typically taking ten days. Out of the ten days on each tree, three days consisted of measurements under full solar radiation, three days under a single layer plastic mesh shade net whose transmittivity was found to be 24 % of full solar radiation, and the remainder of the ten day period under a double layer net (7 % transmittivity). Leaf temperature was measured as well as branch and stem sap flow rates. Results showed that photosynthesis was highest when leaf ...

Volatile oils were extracted from aqueous leaf suspensions of sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.] cultivars Hamlin, Navel, and Valencia and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) cultivars Marsh and Ray Ruby. Pressurized air was used as the sparging gas, and volatile oils were collected in a C-18 cartridge. Gas-liquid chromatography was used to separate and quantify 17 volatile components. Significant quantitative differences for individual components made it possible to distinguish sweet orange from grapefruit (four components), `Marsh from `Ray Ruby grapefruit (two components), `Hamlin from `Valencia or `Navel orange (six components), and `Valencia from `Navel (three components). The simplicity and sensitivity of the procedure suggest potential use for Citrus taxonomic, genetic, and breeding research. ...
You must water your tree at least one time a week if not twice. Orange trees are prone to citrus rust mites in addition to spider mites. Navel orange trees are simple to grow in the correct climate.. Dube waters once every week during the winter, once the trees are semi-dormant. Trees in more compact pots get less. If your older orange tree doesnt produce fruit in abundance, have a soil test of the region where growing orange trees reside to learn what fertilizer ratio is necessary.. Your trees might be planted even when temperatures are absolutely cool. A dwarf tree may suit better even in the event that you dont intend on making use of a container. Its possible to grow orange trees directly from seeds, but they could possibly be infertile or produce fruit that may differ from its parent. Tree Care Orange trees require a lot of plain water.. Generally, so long as your soil is workable, its fine to plant. In case you havent tested your soil, its almost always a great point to do. If you ...

Fruit ripening is a highly coordinated, genetically programmed and irreversible process which involves a series of physiological, biochemical, and organoleptic changes allowing for the development of an edible ripe fruit [31]. Fruit ripening in citrus is accompanied by carbohydrate build-up, acid reduction, carotenoid accumulation and chlorophyll degradation [32]. The bud mutant MT produces fruit with high sucrose and lycopene, but low citric acid content [20]. Here, transcriptome changes over the course of fruit development and ripening in MT and WT were monitored and annotated. We must point out that we collected samples from three different trees and pooled for RNA-seq analysis for each developmental stage. We did not include biological replicates considering that we used a pair of genotypes (WT and MT) and the data from WT and MT could corroborate to each other to some extent. We sequenced each pool once technically since the next generation sequencing data are highly replicable with ...

The sweet orange is not a wild fruit,[15] having arisen in domestication from a cross between a non-pure mandarin orange and a hybrid pomelo that had a substantial mandarin component. Since its chloroplast DNA is that of pomelo, it was likely the hybrid pomelo, perhaps a BC1 pomelo backcross, that was the maternal parent of the first orange.[7][38] Based on genomic analysis, the relative proportions of the ancestral species in the sweet orange is approximately 42% pomelo and 58% mandarin.[39] All varieties of the sweet orange descend from this original cross, differing only by mutations selected for during agricultural propagation.[38] Sweet oranges have a distinct origin from the bitter orange, which arose independently, perhaps in the wild, from a cross between pure mandarin and pomelo parents.[38] The earliest mention of the sweet orange in Chinese literature dates from 314 B.C.[2] In Europe, the Moors introduced the orange to Spain which was known as Al-Andalus, modern Andalusia, with large ...

Oranges (Citrus sinensis) are the citrus fruit we are most familiar with. They do not exist in the wild, but were cultivated in Asia since ancient times. It is thought that the first oranges were hybrids of the pomelo and the mandarin. Oranges were brought to the Middle East in the 9th century, and into Italy by 11th-century Crusaders. By the 15th century, they had been introduced to Europe, and soon after, trees were being grown in the Caribbean Islands and in Florida. However, orange trees are temperature sensitive and the fruit was difficult to transport over long distances, so the fruit was rather expensive for most people. They were considered a real treat for the holidays, which explains their association with Christmas. Your parents or grandparents will likely remember how special it was to see an orange in the toe of their Christmas stocking.. That changed in the 1920s, when canned orange juice began to be marketed as a health drink. Vitamins were pushed as the new miracle cure, and the ...

Polysaccharides are high molecular weight polymers that have functional groups, which can be used as sites to derivate or bind specific ligands. Pectin is a polysaccharide that is obtained from plant resources mainly from citrus plants. It is a widely used product in the food and in the pharmaceutical industry for its thickener, stabilizing and gelling properties. The objective of this work was to establish a pectin drying process obtained by acid hydrolysis from citrus waste by spray dry. An acid extraction process with the dry and ground plant material was used. The influence of the inlet and ...
This article is shared with permission from our friends at Dr. Mercola.. Oranges are one of the most popular fruits in the U.S., but very few consume the peel, which is arguably the healthiest part of the whole fruit. Orange peels are rich in flavonoids, like hesperidin and polymethoxyflavones (PMFs), and other phytochemicals, which contribute many of their health benefits.. Flavonoids - antioxidant compounds found in certain fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices - are known for their role in helping to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.. In addition, orange peel contains higher amounts of certain nutrients than its flesh. For instance, 3.5 ounces of orange peel provides 136 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, while the flesh contains about 71 mg.1. Orange peel also contains considerable amounts of calcium, copper, magnesium, vitamin A, folate and other B vitamins and dietary fiber.. They have an intense orange and bitter flavor, but the latter is often a clue that a food is ...

Citrus greening disease [Huanglongbing (HLB)] is the most destructive disease of citrus. In this work, we have established a metabolite-based mass spectrometry (MS) method for rapid detection of HLB in navel orange trees. Without sample pretreatment, characteristic mass spectra can be directly obtained from the raw plant samples using the direct MS method. The whole detection process can be accomplished within 1 min. By monitoring and comparisons of the healthy and infected plants throughout a whole year, characteristic MS peaks of metabolites are found to be specific responses from infected plants and, thus, could be used as biomarkers for detection of HLB. Therefore, HLB could be directly detected in the asymptomatic samples, such as stems, using this metabolite-based direct MS method. In addition, principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis modes of metabolites from healthy and infected trees were established for investigating differentiation and seasonal ...

Microbial biotransformation is a relevant strategy to obtain high added value natural compounds under controlled environmentally friendly conditions. In this research work, the use of agro-residues (orange peel oil) in the biotransformation of D-limonene by a native Penicillium italicumAUMC13045 species isolated from decayed orange was evaluated. The chemical analysis of water-steam distilled orange peel oil was determined by Gass Chromatography (GC) and D-limonene was shown to be the predominant constituent, representing 82.87% of the total content. It was investigated that the highest α-terpineol yield was obtained by Malt Yeast Broth (MYB) medium at the second day after the first addition of orange peel oil. The highest α-terpineol selectivity obtained when bioconversion media inoculated with fungal conidia at the early stage of the exponential growth. The investigated samples gave higher α-terpineol yield when extracted by mixture of (1:1) diethyl ether and pentane.
