This is the first prospective study comparing the diagnostic accuracy of cineradiography and infused intraluminal manometry in approximately equal numbers of patients with scleroderma, polymyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and rheumatoid arthritis. Major criteria for inclusion of patients were as follows: scleroderma, characteristic generalized skin and visceral lesions; polymyositis, proximal muscle weakness and characteristic biopsy, rash, or electromyogram; SLE, positive antinuclear factor with several of the following-polyarthritis, butterfly rash, unexplained nephritis, or polyserositis; and rheumatoid arthritis, classical disease as diagnosed by American Rheumatism Association criteria. No patients had dysphagia at the time of evaluation. After classification, esophageal manometry and cineradiography ...
Many names exist in the medical literature for moving pictures taken with X-rays. They include fluoroscopy, fluorography, cinefluorography, photofluorography, fluororadiography, kymography (electrokymography, roentgenkymography), cineradiography (cine), videofluorography, and videofluoroscopy. Today the word fluoroscopy is widely understood to be a hypernym of all the aforementioned terms, which explains why it is the most commonly used and why the others are declining in usage.[33] The profusion of names is an idiomatic artifact of technological change, as follows: As soon as X-rays (and their application of seeing inside the body) were discovered in the 1890s, both looking and recording were pursued. Both live moving images and recorded still images were available from the very beginning with simple equipment; thus, both "looking with a fluorescent screen" (fluoro- + -scopy) and "recording/engraving with radiation" (radio- + -graphy) were immediately named with New Latin words-both words are ...
Frog locomotion has attracted wide scientific interest because of the unusual and derived morphology of the frog pelvic girdle and hind limb. Previous authors have suggested that the design of the frog locomotor system evolved towards a specialized jumping morphology early in the radiation of the group. However, data on locomotion in frogs are biased towards a few groups and most of the ecological and functional diversity remains unexplored. Here, we examine the kinematics of swimming in eight species of frog with different ecologies. We use cineradiography to quantify movements of skeletal elements from the entire appendicular skeleton. Our results show that species with different ecologies do differ in the kinematics of swimming, with the speed of limb extension and especially the kinematics of the midfoot being different. Our results moreover suggest that this is not a phylogenetic effect because species from different clades with similar ecologies converge on the same swimming kinematics. We ...

A variation in the total transsection area of walls in a single radial row of tracheids as well as the dependence of the transsection area of walls of single tracheids on the cambial age of growth rings and on the tree growth rate in a 52-year even-aged pine stand were determined. The total area of transsection walls of tracheids ranges from 77⋅103 µm2 in the outer rings of the stem. This value changes with the cambial age of the growth ring according to a negative exponential curve. Due to the worsening of the conditions of tree growth in a stand, the total area of transsection of walls in a single row of tracheids for a given growth ring increases. There is a linear dependence between the total area of transsection of walls in a single row of tracheids and the number of tracheids in the growth ring. The mean area of transsection of walls of a single tracheid is constant within ±10%, irrespective of the type of tracheid (early or late), of the tree growth class, and of the zone of the stem ...
INTRODUCTION: Myocardial contraction fraction (MCF) is the ratio of left ventricular (LV) stroke volume to myocardial volume and may serve as a measure of appropriateness of LV mass. We sought to determine whether depressed MCF predicts major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in healthy adults.. METHODS: 318 Framingham Heart Study (FHS) Offspring cohort members (60±9 yrs, 158 men) underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in 1998-1999. Subjects were free of clinical cardiovascular disease and were recruited from equal strata of age, sex and quintile of Framingham Coronary Risk Score (FCRS), with double sampling of the top quintile. LV and myocardial volumes were determined from volumetric breathold-cine SSFP CMR datasets. MACE were: CV death, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke or new heart failure (HF). A Cox proportional hazards model adjusting for FCRS was used to estimate hazard ratio (HR) for MACE in the lowest within-sex quartile (Q1) of MCF vs. other quartiles (Q2- 4). ...

Almost all such valves were explanted, presuming that full failure would likely follow. Inasmuch as the clinical setting only rarely permits examination of normally rated valves, the accuracy of radiographic detection cannot be clinically defined. This report contrasts the diagnostic precision of cardiac catheterization technics with selective cinefluorography in 37 consecutive patients with suspected congenital heart disease and demonstrates the increased diagnostic precision gained by combining the technics in the individual patient.. The complete diagnosis was correctly determined preoperatively by combined study in 13 of the 14 patients operated upon. Neither technic completely diagnosed a cor triatiorium with anomalous pulmonary venous drainage. Of these 13 patients the precise diagnosis could be established solely by catheterization in 11 and solely by cinefluorography in eight. Catheterization studies failed to distinguish a coronary A-V fistula from other causes ...
Background-The impact of abdominal arterial calcific deposits on the prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) over a long follow-up interval deserves greater scrutiny.. Methods and Results-Lateral lumbar radiographs were studied as a predictor of incident coronary heart disease (CHD), CVD, and CVD mortality in 1049 men and 1466 women (mean age, 61 years) who were followed from 1967 to 1989. Anterior and posterior wall calcific deposits in the aorta at the level of the first through fourth lumbar vertebrae were graded according to increasing severity using a previously validated rating scale for abdominal aortic calcium (AAC) that ranges from 0 to 24 points. There were 454 cases of CHD, 709 cases of CVD, and 365 CVD deaths. Proportional hazards logistic regression was used to test for associations between AAC and later events after adjustment for age, cigarette use, diabetes mellitus, systolic blood pressure, left ventricular hypertrophy, body mass index, cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol. The Center for Vertebrate Genomics (CVG) was created to enhance research and education in vertebrate genetics and functional genomics at Cornell University. As part of that overall goal, the CVG aims to foster research interactions amongst vertebrate geneticists and other faculty. The monthly "Verge" meetings were started to increase awareness among CVG members of the different research programs that currently exist on campus, to share up-to-date information from conferences and the scientific literature, and to encourage interactions between CVG members. The symposium is an outgrowth of these monthly meetings, where we will learn more about the exciting research in vertebrate genomics that is being conducted outside of Cornell, through presentations from distinguished invited speakers, and within Cornell, through a poster session where graduate students and post-doctoral fellows of CVG labs can showcase their own research. The symposium is held alternating-years in July. ...
We present a noninvasive technique for high-speed measuring of eye retraction and eyelid position during blinking. The anterior chamber of the eye is illuminated by the slit lamp of a biomicroscope and eye dynamics during a blinking sequence are captured with a high-speed camera working at 500 frames per second. Digital image processing allows quantitative analysis of cornea and eyelid positions during the closing and opening phases of the blinking process. Our method allows simultaneous measuring of corneal retraction, duration of down and up phases, total blinking duration, and average and peak speeds of the eyelids in both phases, thus providing a complete analysis of the blinks transversal motions.. © 2010 Optical Society of America. This experimental study first demonstrated feasibility of a novel echocardiographic parameter that represented regional deformation measured as change in an endocardial area. The parameter, which had significant correlations with both LS and CS components, showed greater changes in ACR compared with 1D strain.. Recently introduced 3D-STI is a robust technology for strain measurements and can provide regional 1D strain (6,7). In addition, the usefulness of 3D-STI in assessing regional wall displacement and strain, LV volume measurements, and LV dyssynchrony has been reported in clinical studies (8-10). In addition, the 3D-STI can track regional endocardial area and calculate changes in an area through the cardiac cycle, because of a 3D imaging system. The unique parameter, ACR, can be measured on the basis of the deformation of regional rectangular or trapezoidal area measured by orthogonal directional data, just as the present study has confirmed that area tracking had significant relations with ...

X-ray Talbot interferometry, which uses two transmission gratings, has the advantage that broad energy bandwidth x-rays can be used. We demonstrate the use of white synchrotron radiation for high-speed X-ray phase imaging and tomography in combination with an X-ray Talbot interferometer. The moiré fringe visibility over 20% was attained, enabling quantitative phase measurement. X-ray phase images with a frame rate of 500 f/s and an X-ray phase tomogram with a scan time of 0.5 s were obtained successfully. This result suggests a breakthrough for time-resolved three-dimensional observation of objects that weakly absorb X-rays, such as soft material and biological objects.. ©2009 Optical Society of America. We investigated whether the quality of myocardial collagen associates with elevated left-sided filling pressures in 38 hypertensive patients with stage C chronic heart failure. Filling pressures were assessed invasively measuring pulmonary capillary wedge pressure. Left ventricular chamber stiffness constant was calculated from the deceleration time of the early mitral filling wave. The fraction of myocardial volume occupied by total collagen tissue and collagen type I fibers was assessed histomorphologically. The degree of collagen cross-linking (CCL), which determines the formation of insoluble stiff collagen, was assessed by colorimetric and enzymatic procedures. The expression of lysyl oxidase (LOX), which regulates CCL, was assessed by Western blot. Compared with patients with normal pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (≤12 mm Hg; n=16), patients with elevated pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (,12 mm Hg; n=22) exhibited increases of left ventricular chamber stiffness constant, fraction ...

1. In the anesthetized dog, end-diastolic, end-systolic and stroke volumes for the left ventricle have been calculated according to the method of Holt from dilution curves recorded at the aortic root. For heart rates of less than 120 beats per minute, the catheterdensitometer systems used gave 90 to 95 per cent of the true concentration in the aortic root at the end of diastole.. 2. Average volumes of 2.96, 1.63 and 1.33 ml./Kg. of body weight were calculated for each of these parameters. The interindividual and intraindividual variations about these means amounted to ± 30 to 50 per cent.. 3. In approximately 15 per cent of the dilution curves the concentration of dye in the aortic root during early systole (phase of maximal ejection) showed a transient, markedly low value compared with that of the end of diastole. This can be explained only on the basis of the preferential ejection from the heart in early systole of the undyed, newly entering blood from the left atrium, which had mixed poorly ...

The opposite pattern of VISI is seen in triquetrolunate dissociation. Because of the loss of ligamentous constraint the lunate comes under the now uncontested influence of the palmar- flexing scaphoid. Both scaphoid and lunate appear palmar flexed on PA radiographs, the scaphoid is foreshortened (ring sign) and the lunate is triangular in shape, coexisting with a dorsiflexed triquetrum in a "low" or distal position in relation to the lunate, leading to interruption of the proximal arc. This type of instability is more frequent in the rheumatoid wrist. Dynamic forms of carpal instability can only be recognised during cineradiographic studies.2 8 Patients with lesions of the triangular fibrocartilage complex complain of a painful click during wrist motions and tenderness is clearly localised to the dorsal anatomic depression, which is immediately distal to the ulnar head. Passive manipulation of the carpal condyle against the head of the ulna, with the wrist in ulnar deviation, will frequently ...
In order to study the pattern of clonal myocyte distribution during mammalian heart development, we have exploited embryo aggregation chimeras using, as cellular markers, an enhanced jellyfish green fluorescent protein (eGFP) transgene and a desmin-promoter-driven, nuclear-localized beta-galactosidase (nlacZ) knock-in. In neonatal, weanling, and adult chimeric atria and ventricles, irregularly formed patches of various sizes rather than highly dispersed cardiomyocytes were observed. Most of the smaller patches and single cardiomyocytes were found in spatial neighborhood of large patches. This indicated largely coherent clonal growth during myocardial histogenesis combined with tangential displacement or active migration of myocytes. The patterns of ventricular walls were simpler than those of the septum and the atria. In the adult heart, large myocardial volumes devoid of eGFP-positive cardiomyocytes indicated a lack of secondary immigration of blood-borne stem cells into the myocardium. The ...
Results Thirty patients were included, 20 female (66%), mean age 50 years (±11). On X-ray, calcifications were type A in 11 patients (36%) and type B in 19 patients (64%). Calcific deposits were mostly in the supraspinatus tendon (96%). Mean length, width and height of the calcific deposit were 15 mm (±6), 12 mm (±5.7) and 5.2 mm (±1.9) respectively. On US, calcification were arc shaped in 12 cases (40%), fragmented with shadowing in 15 (50%), without shadowing in one case and nodular in 2 cases (6.7%). Type A calcification on X-Ray were mainly arc shaped on US (80%) whereas type B on X-ray were fragmented or nodular on US in 79% of the cases. Bursitis was associated in 12 patients (40%). A significant correlation was found between the size of the calcification recorded on US and X-Ray (length (r=0.78), width (r=0.65) and height (r=0.59); p,0.01). A 3 months, 12 calcifications (40%) had completely disappeared on X-Ray, 3 (10%) were reduced between 50 and 90%, 9 (30%) reduced by less than 50% ...
Most patients spend a couple of hours in the recovery unit following a cardiac catheterization. If your procedure was done via the large artery in the groin, your doctor may have inserted a device or stitch to seal the hole that was made. If this is the case, he will lay flat for a couple of hours. If the tube was left in the groin and had to be pulled, he will lay flat for 4 hours or so following the procedure. You should not drive or lift heavy objects for a few days following the procedure. If your procedure was done via the small artery in the wrist, he or she will have a band over the artery in the wrist hold pressure on the artery. In the days following the procedure, you may feel some discomfort at the access site. There will also possibly be some bruising in the groin or over the wrist. If you feel a lump form, you should call your doctors office to let them know. If there is significant bleeding, you should hold pressure and call your doctors office or 911.. ...

In almost all species, the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints display biphasic angular movements during one step cycle for both symmetrical gaits and in-phase gaits (except for the wrist in Procavia and the shoulder in Tupaia; Fig. 2A,B). Phase relationships between different joints indicate that extensions in the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints are not synchronised. Flexion of all joints starts before touch-down, causing retraction of the segments. Flexion in the elbow joint reaches its maximum at 10-20 % of step duration (20-40 % of stance duration) (Fig. 2A,B), when the hand passes underneath the shoulder joint. Shoulder extension starts at midstance. The maximal dorsiflexion of the hand is reached at 65-70 % of stance duration. The second flexion of the shoulder joint coincides with the beginning of scapula protraction at the end of the stance phase. The elbow flexion initiates protraction of the forearms while maximum plantarflexion of the wrist joint occurs only in the first half of swing ...
Traditional treatments for transsphincteric perirectal fistulae rely upon an immediate (fistulotomy) or delayed (seton) transsection of the sphincter muscle possibly resulting in fecal incontinence, take a long time to heal, and/or are associated with significant failure rates (ex. fibrin glue).. Newer treatment concepts such as the collagen plug do not physically interrupt the sphincter muscle, avoid and minimize the risk of fecal incontinence, and decrease the time to fistula healing. Exciting initial reports have confirmed the collagen plugs utility in treating perirectal fistulae, but a systematic scientific comparison is needed to validate the new, less invasive plug method.. The primary goal of this study is to show that the collagen plug heals transsphincteric perirectal fistulae as well as the conventional seton method. ...

Good morning. So we are going to talk about genetic susceptibility to GI cancers today. As Dr. Brand just said, the first part will be about colon syndromes and then hell talk to you a little bit about pancreatic syndromes as well. So this is interactive, Im going to give you guys some case scenarios and ask you to tell me what you think the genetic syndrome is. So please participate.. All right. So just a little bit of an overview for you first. Indicator-dilution curves were recorded from the femoral and dorsalis pedis arteries of five normal men after injections of indocyanine green into the superior vena cava or thoracic aorta. By considering the femoral curves as inputs to a mathematically linear system and the dorsalis pedis curves as outputs, transfer functions (the distribution of transit times) for the arterial segment between these sites were obtained in terms of a four-parameter model, the lagged normal density curve, over a sixfold range of flow rates. The parameters of the spread (dispersion) of 57 transfer functions were proportional to the mean transit time. The mean difference between transit time and appearance time was 0.30 t; the square root of the variances was 0.18 t. These linear relationships suggest that flow rate has no significant influence on dispersion and that, since no transition from laminar to turbulent flow was apparent, arterial flow characteristics were not significantly changed over a wide range of ...
