Parrots ( order: Psittaciformes) are the most common captive birds and have attracted human fascination since ancient times because of their remarkable intelligence and ability to imitate human speech. However, their genome organization, evolution and genomic relation with other birds are poorly understood. Chromosome painting with DNA probes derived from the flow-sorted macrochromosomes (1-10) of chicken (Gallus gallus, GGA) has been used to identify and distinguish the homoeologous chromosomal segments in three species of parrots, i. e., Agapornis roseicollis (peach-faced lovebird); Nymphicus hollandicus (cockatiel) and Melopsittacus undulatus ( budgerigar). The ten GGA macrochromosome paints unequivocally recognize 14 to 16 hybridizing regions delineating the conserved chromosomal segments for the respective chicken macrochromosomes in these representative parrot species. The cross-species chromosome painting results show that, unlike in many other avian karyotypes with high homology to ...
In addition to that quick fix, i decided to test the accuracy of SupportMixs chromosome paintings by juxtaposing them over the MDLP-World22 chromosome graphs. Due to time limitations, i used only first 7 chromosomes of my own SNP data. At first, i ran the MDLP-World22 modification of DIYDodecad v2.1 in byseg mode on "windows" of 500 contiguous SNPs along a chromosome, slided by increments of 50. After that i cut out chromosome paintings of each chromosome from SupportMixs graphic output and aligned them to the scale of corresponding DIYDodecad chromosome graphs: ...

CHO cells have become the most important cell system for the biotechnological production of pharmaceuticals. Reasons for that are described in the article The increasing potential of chinese hamster ovary cells. A critical feature of a cell line used for production of therapeutics is to be clonal, which means origination from a single cell, to ensure a homogenous therapeutic product. The demonstration of clonal derivation can be a big effort for the pharmaceutical industry, but does it really ensure a homogenous product quality?. ...
Rice yield is a highly complex trait and is controlled by a large number of QTLs with small individual effects. CSSLs are appropriate for detecting QTLs with both large and small effects, and reciprocal CSSLs confer the advantage of enabling evaluation of differences in allelic effects of QTLs in both genetic backgrounds. If a detected QTL shows the same gene activity in reciprocal genetic backgrounds, that locus should have no genetic interaction or epistasis with other background factor(s). QTLs that show different gene activity in the reciprocal backgrounds may be involved in genetic interaction or epistasis with other background factor(s) [21]. By using reciprocal CSSLs derived from a cross between Takanari and Koshihikari, we detected a number of QTLs underlying brown rice yield and its components. Among these loci, we confirmed that the Takanari alleles of GN1a and APO1 increased the number of spikelets per panicle in the reciprocal backgrounds (Figures 5 and 6). A QTL for the number of ...

Many mesenchymal neoplasms are often associated with some nonrandom cytogenetic abnormalities (36) . In the case of ALT, several studies have observed the presence of supernumerary ring and/or long marker chromosomes in 93% of these neoplasms (3 , 37) . Interestingly, chromosome painting by fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that these marker chromosomes mostly contain DNA sequences from the long arm of chromosome 12 (3) . In particular, the 12q13-15 region is found to be amplified within these aberrant chromosomes. This region contains several genes (such as MDM2, CDK4, and HMGA2) that play a direct role in human tumorigenesis (4 , 38 , 39) . These cytogenetic findings are consistent with previous data that describe the HMGA2 gene as a frequent target of rearrangements because of chromosomal translocations that involve the 12q13-15 region (11, 12, 13, 14) .. In this study, we analyzed HMGA2 gene expression in 12 primary cell cultures derived from ALTs. RT-PCR showed 58% of these tumors ...

This study presents a whole-genome comparison of human and a representative of the Afrotherian clade, the African elephant, generated by reciprocal Zoo-FISH. An analysis of Afrotheria genomes is of special interest, because recent DNA sequence comparisons identify them as the oldest placental mammalian clade. Complete sets of whole-chromosome specific painting probes for the African elephant and human were constructed by degenerate oligonucleotide-primed PCR amplification of flow-sorted chromosomes. Comparative genome maps are presented based on their hybridization patterns. These maps show that the elephant has a moderately rearranged chromosome complement when compared to humans. The human paint probes identified 53 evolutionary conserved segments on the 27 autosomal elephant chromosomes and the X chromosome. Reciprocal experiments with elephant probes delineated 68 conserved segments in the human genome. The comparison with a recent aardvark and elephant Zoo-FISH study delineates new ...

The Klimt University of Vienna Ceiling Paintings, also known as the Faculty Paintings, were a series of paintings made by Gustav Klimt for the ceiling of the University of Viennas Great Hall between the years of 1900-1907. In 1894, Klimt was commissioned to paint the ceiling. Upon presenting his paintings, Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence, Klimt came under attack for pornography and perverted excess in the paintings. None of the paintings would go on display in the university. In May 1945 all three paintings were destroyed by retreating SS forces. Philosophy was the first of the three pictures presented to the Austrian Government at the seventh Vienna Secession exhibition in March 1900. It had been awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris, but was attacked by those in his own country. Klimt described the painting as follows: "On the left a group of figures, the beginning of life, fruition, decay. On the right, the globe as mystery. Emerging below, a figure of light: ...

Nijmegen breakage syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by microcephaly, immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity to X-irradiation, and a high predisposition to cancer. Nibrin, the product of the NBN gene, is part of the MRE11/RAD50 (MRN) complex that is involved in the repair of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs), and plays a critical role in the processing of DSBs in immune gene rearrangements, telomere maintenance, and meiotic recombination. NBS skin fibroblasts grow slowly in culture and enter early into senescence. Here we present an incidental finding. Skin fibroblasts, derived from a 9 year old NBS patient, showed a mosaic of normal diploid cells (46,XY) and those with a complex, unbalanced translocation. The aberrant karyotype was analysed by G-banding, comparative genomic hybridization, and whole chromosome painting. The exact breakpoints of the derivative chromosome were mapped by whole genome sequencing: 45,XY,der(6)(6pter → 6q11.1::13q11 → 13q21.33::20q11.22 → 20qter),-13.

Why care about painting as an art? Does it offer to engage our aesthetic interest in ways that other art forms do not, or does it merely reproduce the aesthetic satisfactions they provide? Most paintings involve both marks on a surface, and something represented by those marks. Some attempts to say what is distinctive about painting concentrate on the former feature, understanding the art as an exploration of the two-dimensional picture plane. Others concentrate on the representational aspect, seeking to find something special about the things painting can represent, or the way in which it achieves this. The most promising approaches acknowledge both aspects, and do so as essential elements in the experiencewe have of painting. One such approach turns on the idea that the configurational aspect inflects the representational, so that what we see in the picture itself somehow involves the marks from which the painting is composed. Another sees painting as offering aesthetic values found ...
The first burst of energy can be frantic when performing in front of the camera because I am trying to paint over a large area in a short time. The second stage is where specific areas do not measure up to favorite areas. Quick fixes invite picking at the painting. To avoid picking, I kept saying I wanted to keep the whole painting in mind and work all over but I could not avoid this stage. The next step is obvious - a rest where the painting is put away or just left in view where the mind can subconsciously work on it. The next stage is returning to the canvas after working on others so the canvas is no longer precious and I can try painting all over the canvas to resolve perhaps a new goal. The last step should be the signing of the painting in which a few details are carefully selected for revision. Revisions are to be consistent and important to the meaning of the painting. Sometimes after the signing, I continue to want to make changes ...

Italian artist Agostino Arrivabene uses antique painting techniques to create a foundation from which metamorphic figures emerge in moments of creation. The time-consuming labor of grinding pigments and layering paints is evident in the complex, heavily textural works. New worlds hide beneath and within cracks and crinkles as human-like figures manifest above ground and often out of water.. The Milan-based artist is strongly influenced by 16th century Italian Mannerism, an anti-classical style in which body forms were elongated and light was intrinsically important. In one painting, a man with lifeless pale-blue skin looms like a giant over green moss. Oceanic vegetation rises from his shoulders and illuminated critters surround his head like a halo, as if to suggest a Jesus figure rising from the depths of the ocean. This is not the only image focused on the human head, as several paintings by Arrivabene creating moments of struggle and heaviness around the cranium of his figures - perhaps as a ...

This report will relate about the main results of the analyses carried out on the rock paintings of several Cappadocia churches. The analyses have been carried out within the survey "Rock paintings in Cappadocia. For a project of knowledge, conservation and valorization of the church of the Forty Martyrs at Şahinefendi and its territory" directed by Prof. Maria Andaloro of Tuscia University (Italy) . Such analyses have been carried out according to a methodological path tested during the several years of surveys in Turkey, particularly on the island of Küçük Tavşan and on many other sites in the territory of Mandalya Gulf and also on the occasion of other research projects . This research mission is part of a bigger project called "For a data bank of wall paintings and mosaics of Asia Minor (4th-15th centuries: images, materials, techniques of execution (1996-2010)" directed by Prof. Maria Andaloro. The aim of this work concerns the understanding of the constitutive materials, the execution ...
Starting from the problems of describing non-Western visual aesthetic systems ethnographically, this article provides a basic account of yonata, painting with design, among the Piro people of the Bajo Urubamba river in Eastern Peru. Yonata, and its product yonchi, `design, is the Piro variant of the Amazonian practice of painting surfaces with designs of `geometric type. Placing this practice in the context of the Piro lived world, I argue that painting with design encodes the ideal life trajectory of a Piro woman. For Piro people, design is beautiful, and through design women demonstrate the success of their own lives as beauty on the bodies of others and certain material objects. In the conclusion, I extend the analysis presented here to Australian Aboriginal and Melanesian cases, and to the Western tradition.. ...
In terms of the painting process, mostly are on the color mixing. Massive masking needed for the armors (the plastic for this kit is a bit too soft so i decided not to separate those part that have connected). As i mention, I painted ZZ gundam before which mean painting this kit without armor can be a lot faster than painting the armors. Leg unit is the most tricky part for painting which make my compressor overheat during the painting process. I usually separate the painting process into few session which chest, waist, arms and head in one session, legs in one session, armor piece in one session and backpack with weapon one session. All armor piece were painted in one session and my compressor overheat for two times during the painting process. The only thing i feel from the painting process was it need lot of time and patient as there are lot of large size parts ...
Possessing a multi-faceted set of interests, Davis began painting in 1997, and attributes much of his inspiration to watching his mother pursue craft projects during his childhood, and immersing himself in art history throughout his career," the gallery says. "From helping his mother with activities ranging from woodworking, hand-tooling leather, and remodeling the familys home, to engaging with ancient art and Netherlandish painting from the Northern Renaissance, Davis is a self-taught painter, who continues to render complex paintings of surrealist life, embedded with symbols of mortality, folly, and hubris, fixated within whimsical compositions.". A new process for producing a reproduction of a painting or the like wherein the reproduction has a relief surface which imitates the relief surface of the painting or the like. Heat and pressure are applied simultaneously to an assembly consisting of a mold of the painting, a colored sheet for coloring the reproduction and a substrate to retain the reproduction. Subsequent to this step, shock cooling is applied. The reproduction thus produced does not suffer from the rebound effect of the prior art and good color integrity is maintained.
