Spin and charge dynamics of chromium alloys - Digital Library
Both the spin- and charge-density waves of Cr alloys are produced by the Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes on nearly nested Fermi surfaces. Driven by quasi-particle transitions, transverse spin- wave and longitudinal phason modes are associated with rotational and translational symmetries of pure Cr and its dilute alloys. At low frequencies, both spin and charge phasons have a nearly linear dispersion with a mode velocity which approaches the spin-wave velocity as T approaches T{sub N} or as the mismatch between the Fermi surfaces increases.
In Vitro Release of Elements from Prosthodontic Base Metal Alloys: Effect of Protein-Containing Biologic Environments
PMID: 16752620 Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the release of nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, magnesium, and lead from prosthodontic base metal alloys into protein-containing biologic solutions. Materials and Methods: Dissolution experiments were conducted in either 3% Dulbecco s Modified Eagle Medium or 3% bovine serum albumin solutions for 7 weeks. Results: The protein-containing dissolution solutions and dissolution time did not have a significant effect on release of elements from the alloys (Kruskal-Wallis, P > .05). Conclusions: The amount of the released elements was well below the dietary intake levels of these elements. This study is important given the widespread use of the base metal alloys and the continuing public concerns/questions regarding the health benefits/risks associated with these materials. First-in-Human Evaluation of a Bioabsorbable Polymer-Coated Sirolimus-Eluting Stent | JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions
This first-in-human study was designed to examine the temporal patterns of tissue healing and the proof-of-concept for restoration to a BMS. We chose 4 months post stent deployment as the first assessment point because the polymer coating is completely absorbed at ∼3 months. Repeated imaging at 6, 8, and 18 months allowed a detailed assessment of the tissue strut coverage, strut malapposition, positive remodeling, and other changes that have been associated with some of the durable polymer DES.. Our study confirmed, up to 18 months, the preliminary safety and efficacy of the cobalt chromium thin-strut MiStent SES, from which a poly lactide-co-glycolic acid polymer coating is absorbed in 45 to 60 days. Crystalline sirolimus is delivered locally in sustained, therapeutic concentrations up to 6 months, without initial burst. The small angiographic in-stent LLL at each time point, along with the low neointimal volume obstruction on IVUS, indicates stent efficacy. Of particular interest, and in ...

Safety Study to Assess the FEasibility of Use of the TRYTON Bifurcation Coronary Stent System (SAFE-TRY) - Full Text View -...
Currently available stents were designed for straight lesions, optimised to provide scaffolding (coverage and radial strength) and ease of deliverability. In straight lesions, these stents have been shown to provide superb acute and long-term results. One lesion subset that continues to challenge the interventionalist is bifurcations lesions. A number of different strategies have been employed with standard stents to address bifurcation lesions each of which have significant limitations. Large contemporary registries characterising current stent usage in bifurcating lesions have demonstrated decreased procedural success with increased rates in restenosis and thrombosis (acute, subacute and delayed). The limitations of currently available stents have led groups to develop stents designed specifically to treat bifurcation lesions. The Tryton Side-Branch Stent Stent TM (Tryton Medical, Inc., Newton, MA, USA) is a balloon expandable cobalt chromium stent, designed specifically to treat bifurcation ...

Pharma Law News: December 2011, Conserve Hip Systems and possible failure?
The common component in both systems-and what is at the heart of the lawsuits-is the Conserve cup, which is a cast cobalt chromium molybdenum piece that holds the metal femoral head, mimicking the natural movement of a hip joint. It is that unlined cobalt part that is allegedly causing serious harmful effects to patients who receive the implant device. The problem is that these two metal components cause the release of metal particles around the hip joint and surrounding tissue. As a result, a high percentage of patients have developed metallosis and biologic toxicity and are experiencing a high and early failure rate of the device ...

Dental Materials
Dental Gold and Gold Alloys. Gold, the most noble of metals, seldom tarnishes or corrodes in the oral cavity. Because of the softness of pure gold, it is not indicated for use in the mouth except in the form of gold foil. Gold is frequently used in combination with other metals to produce alloys that can be used to fabricate various types of dental restorations where metal is indicated. The basic types of gold alloys used in dentistry are casting gold, gold solder, wrought gold, and gold plate. The principal metals used to combine with gold to form the alloys are silver, copper, platinum, palladium, and zinc. ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL Controlled items subject to strict accountability and safeguarding are gold solder, platinum foil, and gold, silver, and chromium alloys. In addition, scrap from these controlled items and from amalgam are also subject to the same controls. Certain delegated members of a dental facility control these items. However, all members of the dental care system must be aware ...

Co-Cr wear products derived from metal-on-metal articulations induce apoptosis on monocyte-like U937 cells - Strathprints
Cobalt-chromium alloy (Co-Cr) particles in the nanometre size range are produced by wear at the articulating surfaces of metal-on-metal implants, and are associated with inflammation, bone loss and implant loosening. Additionally, metal implants undergo corrosion inside the human body releasing ions into the surrounding tissue. This led to the withdrawal from the market of the DePuy ASR™ metal-on-metal hip replacements in 2010. Ions released from Co-Cr particles derived from a resurfacing implant and their subsequent cellular up-take have been measured. Moreover, the ability of the metal debris and Cobalt (Co) ions to induce apoptosis was examined. For this purpose, U937 cells and Co pre-treated U937 cells were exposed to Co, metal debris and Co + debris for 24 and 48 h. To measure metal ion concentrations in culture medium and cell lysates Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis was performed. Apoptosis was evaluated with Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) and ...
Biological responses of preosteoblasts to particulate and ion forms of Co-Cr alloy
This study compared the particulate and ion forms of a cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) alloy on the differentiation/activation of preosteoblasts. Mouse preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) were cultured in an osteoblast-induction medium in the presence of particulate and ion forms of a Co-Cr alloy, followed by cell proliferation and cytotoxicity evaluations. The maturation and function of osteoblasts were assessed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay and related gene expressions. Both particulate and ion forms of the metals significantly reduced the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, cells challenged with high concentrations of particles and ions exhibited a marked cytotoxic effect and diminished expression of ALP. Real-time (RT) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) data have suggested that cells with Co-Cr particles dramatically promoted over-expression of monocyte chemo-attractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), whereas Co2+ ions treatment ...

IJMS | Free Full-Text | Early Fixation of Cobalt-Chromium Based Alloy Surgical Implants to Bone Using a Tissue-engineering...
To establish the methods of demonstrating early fixation of metal implants to bone, one side of a Cobalt-Chromium (CoCr) based alloy implant surface was seeded with rabbit marrow mesenchymal cells and the other side was left unseeded. The mesenchymal cells were further cultured in the presence of ascorbic acid, β-glycerophosphate and dexamethasone, resulting in the appearance of osteoblasts and bone matrix on the implant surface. Thus, we succeeded in generating tissue-engineered bone on one side of the CoCr implant. The CoCr implants were then implanted in rabbit bone defects. Three weeks after the implantation, evaluations of mechanical test, undecalcified histological section and electron microscope analysis were performed. Histological and electron microscope images of the tissue engineered surface exhibited abundant new bone formation. However, newly formed bone tissue was difficult to detect on the side without cell seeding. In the mechanical test, the mean values of pull-out forces were 77.15 N

Simultaneous translation on two rods improves the correction and apex translocation in adolescent patients with hypokyphotic...
The aim of this investigation was to describe a new adaptation of the ST2R technique as reported by Clement et al.10 for thoracic hypokyphotic AIS patients. We focused on whether the ST2R technique would improve the TK apex location and outcomes relative to a case-matched cohort treated with RR.. However, one limitation of our study is the discrepancy of rods used in the RR and ST2R maneuvers, i.e., the 5.5-mm titanium versus the 6.0-mm cobalt-chrome alloy rods, respectively. This discrepancy is primarily due to the retrospective nature of the study and the consequential change in materials used over time in our practice. As such, outcome differences between the two techniques may be in part explained by the differences in the rods applied. Nevertheless, the roles of the rods in the RR and ST2R techniques are inherently different. RR uses a single rod to support a rotational correction of the spine at the concavity side, while a second rod is placed after the correction to provide support to ...

Preliminary evaluation of salivary pellicle on nickel-chromium alloy in vivo
Objective: The composition of the salivary interface (pellicle) between dental restorations and oral mucosa may be critical to the biocompatibility of the restoration. The purpose of this study was to examine the molecular composition of the salivary pellicle on nickel-chromium alloy in vivo. Method and materials: The molecular components of nickel-chromium pellicle was examined with sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analyses. Results: Only limited numbers of salivary proteins were found to participate in the formation of nickel-chromium pellicle in vivo. Salivary amylase and secretory immunoglobulin A were among the proteins identified in the pellicle. Conclusion: In vivo, nickel-chromium pellicle consists of selectively adsorbed salivary proteins. Because both salivary amylase and secretory immunoglobulin A are antimicrobial proteins, it is possible that they play a role in modulating the microbial flora on the nickel-chromium prosthesis ...

Second Generation Drug-Eluting Stents: A Review of the Everolimus-Eluting Platform | Semantic Scholar
Everolimus-eluting stents (EES) represent the next generation of drug-eluting stents (DES). Important design modifications include thin strut stent backbones, less inflammatory and more biocompatible polymers, and lower drug dosing. The cobalt chromium EES fluoropolymer XIENCE V stent has been the most extensively studied of such stents. In animal models, this stent demonstrated minimal vessel inflammation, a biologically active endothelium with strut coverage similar to a bare metal stent, and inhibition of intimal hyperplasia comparable to that seen with sirolimus-eluting stents. The SPIRIT family of clinical trials demonstrated low rates of late loss, and clinical restenosis, as well as low rates of very late stent thrombosis. These excellent clinical outcomes addressed limitations of the 1st generation DES, and substantiated widespread clinical use of the EES platform.
Corrosion of implantable materials
Implantable materials or biomaterials are utilized to repair, assist or replace living tissue or organs that are functioning below an acceptable level. A wide range of metals and their alloys, polymers, ceramics and composites are used in surgically implanted medical devices and prostheses and dental materials. These are important materials that provide the best dental implantations for patients. Most implanted devices are constructed of more than one kind of materials. Since the early 1900s, metal alloys have been developed for these applications to provide improved physical and chemical properties, such as strength, durability and corrosion resistance.. Major classes of metals used in medical devices and dental materials include stainless steels, cobalt-chromium alloys and titanium (as alloys and unalloyed). In addition, dental casting alloys are based on precious metals (gold, platinum, palladium or silver), nickel and copper and may in some cases contain smaller amounts of many other ...
Uptake of chromium into red blood cells does not affect the ability of haemoglobin to bind oxygen - Strathprints
Many of the metallic implants used in orthopaedics are made of stainless steel or cobalt-chromium alloys which contain 18-30% chromium. Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) has been shown to be the predominant form of chromium released following in vivo and in vitro corrosion of these metal implants (Merritt and Brown, 1995 K. Merritt and S.A. Brown, J. Biomed. Mater. Res. 29 (1995), pp. 627-633. Full Text via CrossRef , View Record in Scopus , Cited By in Scopus (67)Merritt and Brown, 1995). Blood chromium levels may be elevated between 50 and 250 times in patients with metal hip implants (Lhotka et al., 2003). At physiological pH, Cr (VI) exists predominantly as the chromate anion and as such can enter cells via non-specific anion channels. The anionic Cr (VI) diffuses readily through the red blood cell (RBC) membrane and is bound by the haemoglobin probably after its rapid reduction to the cationic trivalent state within the RBC (Gray and Sterling, 1950). The aims of this study were to investigate the ...
prostheses-upper-limb-hook-myoelectric
Definition : Hook prostheses operated by myoelectric power and designed for partial functional replacement of a missing hand. These prostheses are typically external devices made of metal (e.g., cobalt-chromium alloys), hard plastics (e.g., polyethylene), carbon fibers, or a combination of materials; they may include totally or partially implanted components (e.g., sensors, electrodes). The prostheses are usually fixed with a socket to the wrist and require some degree of customization. Myoelectric controlled hand prostheses typically incorporate small electrical motors and electrodes within the socket to pick up electrical signals that trigger hook operation as the muscles in the residual limb contract. They may be used alone as a replacement for a missing hand or as the terminal component of a below-the-elbow, above-the-elbow, or total upper limb prosthesis in patients who have congenital abnormalities or who suffered amputations due to illness (e.g., diabetes) or traumatic accidents.. Brazing - Wikipedia
For successful wetting, the base metal must be at least partially soluble in at least one component of the brazing alloy. The molten alloy therefore tends to attack the base metal and dissolve it, slightly changing its composition in the process. The composition change is reflected in the change of the alloys melting point and the corresponding change of fluidity. For example, some alloys dissolve both silver and copper; dissolved silver lowers their melting point and increases fluidity, copper has the opposite effect. The melting point change can be exploited. As the remelt temperature can be increased by enriching the alloy with dissolved base metal, step brazing using the same braze can be possible. Alloys that do not significantly attack the base metals are more suitable for brazing thin sections. Nonhomogenous microstructure of the braze may cause non-uniform melting and localized erosions of the base metal. Wetting of base metals can be improved by adding a suitable metal to the alloy. ...

TCT-388 Real World Follow- up one year Of The Novel MeRes100. | JACC: Journal of the American College of Cardiology
Safety concerns with 1st generation of bioabsorbable vascular scaffolds(BRS) have prompted the development of next generation of these devices, focused on thinner struts and faster resorption time. Recently developed, the MeRes100 (Meril Life Sciences) is a sirolimus-eluting (1.25 mg/mm2) BRS, which is built of a thin-strut (100mm) PLLA polymer with a hybrid cell design (closed cells on the edges and open cells on the center). There are couplets of tri-axial radiopaque markets at either end to facilitate scaffold positioning and post dilation. Bioresorption is expected to occur within 2 years. We sought to evaluate the performance of this device in the treatment of real-world, less selected patients. ...
