Introduction. Aims: Deduce the concentration of a saturated solution of chlorine In order to determine the concentration of aqueous chlorine one must firstly reduce the chlorine to its ions, using a reducing agent, in this case Fe(II). I will be using FeCl2 powder for a source of Fe2+. 2FeCl2 (2) + Cl2(aq) --, 2FeCl3 (aq) [ EQUATION 1] 2Fe2+ (aq) + Cl2 (aq) --, 2Fe3+ (aq) + 2Cl-(aq) 2 : 1 ratio Now if one can calculate the amount of reducing agent left over, it will be possible to calculate the initial Cl2 solution concentration. It is possible to do this by titration of the Fe2+ with Potassium Manganate. [ EQUATION 2] MnO4- (aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) +8H+(aq) --, Mn2+ (aq) + 5Fe3+(aq) + 4H2O(l) 1 : 5 ratio Acidic conditions are necessary, because in neutral or alkaline conditions Potassium Manganate is reduced no farther than Mn+4 and a source of H+ is also needed. Sulphuric acid is a good source of H+, and the SO4-2 ions are not reactive. Hydrochloric acid would react with the KMnO4, and chlorine gas ...

0045] In Examples 1-6, a single chlorite precursor solution was used for all Examples. The chlorite precursor solution was prepared by diluting an aqueous 25% sodium chlorite solution with reverse osmosis water. The pH of the resultant solution was measured to be 8.5 with a Hach Sension 1 pH meter. The chlorite concentration in the precursor solution was measured to be 823 mg/L by using a Hach Digital Titrator, Iodometric Test Kit for Chlorine. To begin the measurement, 100 ml of reverse osmosis water was placed in a 250-ml Erlenmeyer flask, and 2 ml of the sample precursor solution was placed into the reverse osmosis water. One Potassium Iodide Powder Pillow and one Dissolved Oxygen Reagent 3 Pillow were added to the solution in the flask, swirled to mix, and placed in the dark for 10 minutes to allow the reaction to go to completion. Using a 0.113 N Sodium Thiosulfate Cartridge in the Digital Titrator, the solution was titrated to a pale yellow. Next, Starch Indicator Solution was added until ...
0050]FIG. 1 is a graph showing a relation between the holding time and the carbon dioxide gas volume shown in TABLE 1. It was understood from FIG. 1 that there is substantial difference in carbon dioxide gas volume before and after elapse of forty eight hours of holding time. As seen in TABLE 1, carbon dioxide gas volume in the beans was not largely reduced within forty eight hours of holding time at room temperature after roasting. In this case, change in flavor of the liquid extract was avoided. No substantial difference in flavor was sensed in two hours after extraction. In the case of the beans kept at room temperature for fifty two hours or more (Reference Example 1-1), carbon dioxide gas volume was decreased to 87% of that of the beans immediately stored after roasting (Embodiment 1-1). Although the decrease in carbon dioxide gas volume was not so large, there was substantial change in flavor in two hours after extraction in the sensory analysis. As the holding time became longer like ...

The first indication in determining the quality of wine is if there is presence of any faults. The more common ones include cork taint (TCA) and oxidation and can be detected when an aroma or flavor in the wine appears off or just wrong. Cork taint occurs when 2,4,6 - Tricloranisole or TCA, generated by naturally-occurring fungi that often exist in the crevices of wood or cork, comes into contact with chlorine compounds present in pesticides, cleaning agents, wood treatments, etc. When cork taint occurs, the wine will have a musty, moldy aroma. Controlling the source of TCA has proven extremely difficult and currently there are no solutions.. Another wine fault is the oxidation or reduction of the wine - which happens when wines are either exposed to too much or too little oxygen respectively. When oxidation occurs, this usually results in a breakdown of its attractive color. Whites go a dull brown/straw, rosés go brown/orange, reds become paler with an orange/brown rim. Chilling grapes and ...

Total chlorine is the remaining chlorine concentration after chlorine demand and is not available for disinfection the range for total chlorine was from 0.82±0.01 to 1.35±0.01mg/L with the significant difference (p,0.05) between these boreholes high the suitable concentration of total chlorine adopted by 19 is 5mg/L but with regards to all the samples analysed, the total chlorine concentration was within permissible range of WHO standard. However, the effect of heavily chlorinated water can lead to increased risk cancer as well as asthma and dermatitis and can also lead to bleeding gums 27. Free chlorine is the chlorine available for disinfection and for deactivating organisms. The concentration of free chlorine ranged from 0.71±0.01 to 1.2±0.01 with a high significant difference (p,0.05) observed in the different borehole water analysed however The 19 standard guideline value for free chlorine is given as 5mg/l and with due consideration to the permissible limit all the water sample ...
A Risk Assessment Report (RAR) conducted by the European Union on sodium hypochlorite conducted under Regulation EEC 793/93 concluded that this substance is safe for the environment in all its current, normal uses.[24] This is due to its high reactivity and instability. Disappearance of hypochlorite is practically immediate in the natural aquatic environment, reaching in a short time concentration as low as 10−22 μg/L or less in all emission scenarios. In addition, it was found that while volatile chlorine species may be relevant in some indoor scenarios, they have negligible impact in open environmental conditions. Further, the role of hypochlorite pollution is assumed as negligible in soils. Industrial bleaching agents can also be sources of concern. For example, the use of elemental chlorine in the bleaching of wood pulp produces organochlorines and persistent organic pollutants, including dioxins. According to an industry group, the use of chlorine dioxide in these processes has reduced ...

Active oxygen (Aquablanc) is a sanitation system that uses Hydrogen Peroxide or Potassium Monopersulfate. It works in a very similar way to chlorine and bromine as it kills bacteria and breaks down contaminants in your water but unlike chlorine, it does not produce by-products which are often the cause for irritated skin, red eyes or that chlorine smell, it also dissipates quickly. Active oxygen is recommended for private domestic pools which are well maintained and looked after. It is not as strong as bromine or chlorine and therefore thorough regular maintenance is required to ensure your pool and hot tub remains in a good condition. However, it has become increasingly popular in recent years since it is odour free and offers a gentle alternative to those with sensitive skin. It is particularly recommended for those with children.. Pros: Gentle on skin, no odour, Aquablanc is an easy to use system, no more red-eye.. Cons: Not as strong, needs you to stay on top of cleaning and dosing. ...
A Conyngham Borough Authority employee required medical treatment after getting blasted with chlorine vapor while checking on a well house Wednesday morning.. The leak also forced the closure of Banks Avenue, from Main Street in Conyngham to state Route 93 in Sugarloaf, for about three hours as emergency responders assessed and neutralized the leak.. A small leak in a hose at the well across the street from 42 Banks Ave. built up chlorine vapor in the cold well house, which is about 6 feet tall, said Kenneth Temborski, authority board chairman. The well house, which resembles a vault, is mostly underground; inside is a 100-gallon drum of water-diluted chlorine to which the hose is attached, he said. However, the tank was not full.. The employee, who has not officially been named, was overcome by chlorine vapors after opening the door of the well house. The employee was taken by ambulance to Hazleton General Hospital for treatment after experiencing a respiratory issue.. As firefighters arrived ...

N2 - The crystal structure of Photosystem II (PSII) analyzed at a resolution of 1.9 Å revealed deformations of chlorin rings in the chlorophylls for the first time. We investigated the degrees of chlorin ring deformation and factors that contributed to them in the PSII crystal structure, using a normal-coordinate structural decomposition procedure. The out-of-plane distortion of the PD1 chlorin ring can be described predominantly by a large doming mode arising from the axial ligand, D1-His198, as well as the chlorophyll side chains and PSII protein environment. In contrast, the deformation of PD2 was caused by a saddling mode arising from the D2-Trp191 ring and the doming mode arising from D2-His197. Large ruffling modes, which were reported to ...
The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) has scheduled a free chlorine maintenance that will be conducted on its water transmission system and customer cities distribution systems for a 28-day period from Feb. 17 to March 17. As a member city, Richardson receives its water from NTMWD.. The free chlorine maintenance does not affect water quality, and water remains safe for use. Consumers who are sensitive to taste and odor changes in drinking water might notice a change during this period. This palatability change does not alter the quality of the drinking water.. Free chlorine maintenance allows water suppliers to maintain the disinfectant residual in their systems without flushing systems, thus conserving water. ...

Chlorine was first added to a community water system in 1908 in Chicago and was instrumental in eliminating many types of water-borne disease such as Cholera and Typhoid fever. Prior to chlorination, many major cities had death tolls of 1 in 1000 people from Typhoid alone. Chlorine has been used to disinfect municipal water for over 80 years and has had some positive effects on public health. In the 1970s it was discovered that chlorine, when added to water, forms Trihalomethanes (chlorinated by-products) by combining with certain naturally occurring organic matter such as vegetation and algae. In 1992 the American Journal of Public Health published a report that showed a 15% to 35% increase in certain types of cancer for people who consume chlorinated water. This report also stated that much of these effects were due to showering in chlorinated water. The National Cancer Institute estimates cancer risks for people who consume chlorinated water to be 93% higher than for people who do not. The ...
To prevent scale formation, calcium hardness should be checked at least once a week. Further, when Calcium hardness is too low, i.e. the water is too soft, it can create a reaction called pH bounce which in turn, can affect the performance of chlorine. The ideal range of calcium hardness is 150 to 400 mg/L.. After examining the key chemicals for maintaining pool water balance and how they interact, you could conclude that chlorine is central to ensuring a healthy pool. We should now drill down and look closer at managing chlorine levels. Measuring Chlorine Measuring chlorine in a pool is a relatively easy task. Chlorine concentrations in the range of 1 to 3 ppm are used in both pools and spas. Since free chlorine is the primary disinfectant used for swimming pools, the choice of the best means of measuring free chlorine for your application is needed.. Test Strips Test strips are small strips, typically produced from plastic, with pads on the end that are chemically impregnated. These pads ...

AU - Rolle, Massimo. PY - 2013. Y1 - 2013. N2 - We propose a self-consistent method to predict the evolution of carbon and chlorine isotope ratios during degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons. The method treats explicitly the cleavage of isotopically different C-Cl bonds and thus considers, simultaneously, combined carbon-chlorine isotopologues. To illustrate the proposed modeling approach we focus on the reductive dehalogenation of chlorinated ethenes. We compare our method with the currently available approach, in which carbon and chlorine isotopologues are treated separately. The new approach provides an accurate description of dual-isotope effects regardless of the extent of the isotope fractionation and physical characteristics of the experimental system. We successfully applied the new approach to published ...

I decided to change over from baquacil to chlorine at the end of the season last year. Everything went well with the change. My question involves the amount of chlorine Im having to add to keep my level between 3 to 5 ppm. Im adding about 80 ounces of 6% bleach about every 2 days. Water is crystal clear and looks great, Im just wondering if thats about normal chlorine consumption. My test results are: FC= 5, CC=.5, PH=7.5, T/A=95, CH=120, CYA=60. To ensure that they are operating correctly, you must calibrate chlorine gas detectors periodically.. ...
Source. Its very clear the rocket in the video is a match for the Iranian examples, with similar colouring and markings. A very interesting detail is the date of manufacture (2016), which can be clearly seen in this screenshot taken from the media office of Al-Marj video.. The design of the munition is close to that of improvised rocket assisted munitions (IRAMs) used by the Syrian military and documented since 2013, which also use 107mm rocket motors. A typical IRAM takes a conventional rocket and replaces the warhead with a much larger one, increasing the destructive power of the munitions while sacrificing range and accuracy. Whats significant about the IRAMs used in the above attack is instead of an explosive warhead, the warhead was reportedly filled with chlorine gas, the first document instance of this in the conflict. While there have been previous claims of chlorine rockets being used in Syria, this is the first time there has been visual evidence. Previous examples of chlorine gas ...

So while were on the topic of these normal carrots being mechanically peeled and shaped to look like baby carrots, lets debunk some misinformation that is being spread about the baby carrots and chlorine causing white marks on the carrots. From the viral piece of Facebook spreading about mini carrots and chlorine it states, You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is the chlorine which resurfaces. This part is just absolutely absurd. The white covering is simply cuts and gashes from the carrot being peeled and mechanically shaped into a cute little baby carrots. You can test this out for yourself by getting an unaltered carrot and cutting it up with a knife and letting it sit out. You will notice that the parts youve cut with the knife will look white as the carrot dries out and the water evaporates.. I put two pictures below of the mini peeled carrots I buy from Costco under the brand Earthbound ...

I have a quick question on how chlorine affects natural hair. I ve been fully natural for 6 years and always thought my hair was mostly 4a with some areas 4b/3c. However I went swimming the other day And didn t wash out the chlorine right away. I already know that chlorine will make any hair type dry and crunchy if not washed but when I woke up the next morning my curls were a lot tighter in diameter (4b or maybe even tighter!). Once I washed my hair my curls loosened up to the size I m used

So you expect to do a lot of swimming this summer. You must know that a day of dipping into a chlorine pool can do some damage to your hair. Chlorine protects swimmers from harmful bacteria that can grow in swimming pools. However, if you soak too long in the water, it can take its toll on your skin and hair. Experts say you have to prepare your hair to save yourself from being sorry that you have ruined your locks. Here are some helpful tips.. Know your hair type. Some hair types are more prone to extreme dryness and tangling. Chlorine in water strips hair of their natural oils, leaving your hair dry and brittle. The curlier and tighter your hair pattern, the more dry and tangled it becomes due to chlorine. Thats because curls are naturally drier than straight or wavy hair.. Be ready before you jump in. Prepare your hair by putting on a rich conditioner or a leave-on conditioner and detangling your hair strands as hair absorbs chlorine. Also, chlorine can turn blonde hair into a greenish ...

Chlorine inhalation elevated chlorine reactants, such as chlorotyrosine and chloramine, in blood plasma. Using heart tissue and primary cardiomyocytes, we demonstrated that acute highconcentration chlorine exposure in vivo (500 ppm for 30 min) caused decreased total ATP content and loss of sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) activity. Loss of SERCA activity was attributed to chlorination of tyrosine residues and oxidation of an important cysteine residue, cysteine-674, in SERCA, as demonstrated by immunoblots and mass spectrometry. Using cardiomyocytes, we found that chlorine-induced cell death and damage to SERCA could be decreased by thiocyanate, an important biological antioxidant, and by ...

We perform first-principles structure optimization, phonon frequency, and finite temperature molecular dynamics calculations based on density functional theory to study the interaction of chlorine atoms with graphene predicting the existence of possible chlorinated graphene derivatives. The bonding of a single chlorine atom is ionic through the transfer of charge from graphene to chlorine adatom and induces negligible local distortion in the underlying planar graphene. Different from hydrogen and fluorine adatoms, the migration of a single chlorine adatom on the surface of perfect graphene takes place almost without barrier. However, the decoration of one surface of graphene with Cl adatoms leading to various conformations cannot be sustained due to strong Cl-Cl interaction resulting in the desorption through the formation of Cl2 molecules. On the contrary, the fully chlorinated graphene, chlorographene CCl, where single chlorine atoms are bonded alternatingly to each carbon atom from different ...
The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority will temporarily substitute chlorine as the disinfecting agent in the drinking water treatment process in place of its regularly used chlorine/ammonia compound, known as chloramines, at the GBRA Port Lavaca Water Treatment Plant.. This action will begin on Monday and will last 21 days, after which the plant will resume the use of chloramines, Herb Wittliff, manager for Port Lavaca operations, stated in a news release.. Chlorine and chloramines are used as disinfecting agents for drinking water to safeguard finished water against bacteria that cause water-borne illnesses, Wittliff said. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality recommends periodically substituting chlorine alone to provide more stability to the disinfecting process and remove any excess ammonia that might have accumulated in distribution systems over time.. As part of the process, the three wholesale customers of GBRA - the City of Port Lavaca, the Calhoun County Rural Water System of GBRA ...

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is currently being considered as an alternate to chlorine as a disinfectant for public water supplies. Studies were conducted to determine the toxicity of ClO2 (0, 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg/L) and its metabolites, ClO2(-1) and ClO3(-1) (10, 100 mg/L) in drinking water in rats. After 9 months treatment the osmotic fragility of the red blood cells was decreased in all treatment groups, while a decreased blood glutathione was only observed in the metabolite groups. At 2, 4, and 6 months no significant hematologic changes were noted in treated rats compared to control. However, after 9 months RBC counts, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were decreased in all treatment groups. ClO2, ClO2(-1), and ClO3(-1) administered chronically in drinking water for 3 months inhibited the incorporation of (3)H-thymidine into nuclei of rat tests. The treatment with Cl compounds decreased rat body weight in all groups after 10 and 11 months treatment ...

The majority of the barium present in the pulping process exits the digester as barium carbonate. Barium carbonate dissolves in the bleach plant when the pH drops below 7 and, if barium and sulfate concentrations are too high, begins to precipitate as barium sulfate. Barium is difficult to control because a mill cannot avoid this carbonate-to-sulfate transition using common bleaching technology. An advantage in controlling barium scales is that the sulfate, once formed, will not redissolve to any appreciable extent, and this reduces the rate at which barite scale can form in other locations in the bleach plant. A mill has relatively few options for controlling barium sulfate scale. The first is to ensure very good debarking to minimize barium entering the mill with the wood. The second option is to minimize sulfate content of the first chlorine dioxide stage in the bleach plant. Sulfate is minimized through good brown stock washing and by using sulfuric acid for pH control instead of chlorine ...
Reduction/oxidation (Redox) reactions chemically convert hazardous contaminants to less toxic compounds that are less mobile and/or inert. Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons from one compound to another. One compound is oxidized (loses electrons) and one is reduced (gains electrons). Oxidizing agents most commonly used for treatment of hazardous contaminants are ozone, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite, chlorine, and chlorine dioxide. The reducing agents most commonly used for treatment of hazardous waste are ferrous sulfate, sodium bisulfite, and sodium hydrosulfite. Experimental systems have been used to oxidize trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE ...

The kinetics, products, and reaction pathways of triclosan/free chlorine reactions were investigated for the pH range 3.5-11. Although pH dependent speciation occurs in both triclosan and free chlorine, only the reaction between HOCl and the phenolate-triclosan was found to play a significant role in the kinetics. The second order rate constant for the reaction between phenolate-triclosan and HOCl was found to be 5.40 (±1.82) à 103 M-1s-1. Three chlorinated triclosan intermediates were tentatively identified based on mass spectral analysis. Additionally, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, and chloroform formed under excess free chlorine conditions. The majority of the chloroform formed during the reactions does not form via 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol oxidation. Therefore, the majority of chloroform is likely formed via the oxidation of triclosanâ s phenolic ring. Based on the identified products, a reaction pathway was proposed for the oxidation of triclosan in the ...
My pack space for my Thursday trip is at a severe premium, so if I can leave behind my filter kit, that would really help. Chlorine dioxide (Aquamira) is effective against cysts, but it is relatively expensive, plus its not available in stores in my town. If I were to pick some up on the way it would add about an hour to my trip. If I order online, I have to pay shipping, and it might not get here on time. The local WM does have an iodine based treatment (yuck), but I was thinking maybe bleach would fit the bill. Ive read the US recommendations for sanitizing drinking water with bleach, and Im comfortable with it. I also have a couple of in-bottle charcoal filters to help with the taste. However, bleach is not effective against giardia and cryptosporidium. Does anyone know if these are an issue in the Caney Creek Wilderness ...

This study describes the use of alkaline fusion by sodium peroxide to dissolve chlorine and bromine in rocks to produce a solution which, with appropriate pre-treatment, is suitable for analysis by ion chromatography. Results are given for a selection of sedimentary and igneous rocks. The accuracy of the fusion method is evaluated by analysis of Geological Survey of Japan reference materials. Additionally, a spike recovery rest is performed to show that the fusion process is quantitative for chlorine and bromine. The results for chlorine are in the range 58-3860 mg kg(-1) and show good agreement both with results obtained by pyrohydrolysis with flow injection colorimetric detection and results obtained by aqueous leaching of the samples with ion chromatography detection. Results for bromine are in the range ,3-4.5 mg kg(-1). Because of the relatively few data obtained in this study and the relative paucity of published data for reference materials, an assessment of the accuracy of the fusion ...

New in-line diffusion and injection technology overcomes maintenance, efficiency and cost obstacles long associated with using carbon dioxide to bring concrete operations process or storm water to pH levels suited for environmental release or municipal sewer discharge. The subject of late-2011 patent filings by Wendell, N.C.-based Fortrans Inc., the technology positions producers to trade safety concern-clouded acid treatment methods for one using benign CO2. We have a unique way of mixing carbon dioxide gas into flowing water, where gas bubbles convert to carbonic acid and lower the pH, says Fortrans CEO Bob Cooke. Water from concrete plants too easily fouls the diffusers or sparger assemblies producers have traditionally tried for imparting carbon dioxide gas into high pH water.. Conventional, clog-prone diffusers mimic the sieve-like, layered-screen design of faucet aerators, he adds. Injecting CO2 through such devices in ready mixed or precast concrete plants tends to yield a gas ...
At usual pressure it will not melt from a solid to a liquid but instead changes directly from a solid to a gas. This is called sublimation. It will change directly from a solid to a gas at any temperature higher than extremely cold temperatures. Dry ice sublimates at normal air temperature. Dry ice exposed to normal air gives off carbon dioxide gas that has no color. Carbon dioxide can be liquified at pressure above 5.1 atmospheres. Carbon dioxide gas that comes off of dry ice is so cold that when it mixes with air it cools the water vapour in the air to fog, which looks like a thick white smoke. It is often used in the theater to create the appearance of fog or smoke. ...
The concentration of carbon dioxide gas in todays atmosphere is 417ppm (parts per million). There are 10^44 gas molecules in the entire atmosphere (78% diatomic nitrogen, 21% diatomic oxygen, 1% everything else), so 1ppm is equivalent to 10^38 gas particles. The 417ppm of CO2 represents a total of 4.17×10^40 molecules.. Some people hope for new technology to remove carbon dioxide gas from Earths atmosphere, and then forestall the advance of global warming, or even completely eliminate it. I see this as improbable because I think any such technology would be extremely inefficient at CO2 removal, and be energy intensive as well. The process of gaseous diffusion, as with the release of CO2 into the atmosphere, requires no energy; the gases just mix, spread and dilute, and the entropy of the atmosphere increases. It is an irreversible process in the parlance of chemical thermodynamics. This means that the spontaneous un-mixing of gases and their re-concentration into separate volumes has never ...
In the water treatment cycle chlorination can be performed at any point-there is not one particular period that chlorine must be applied. The point of application of chlorine would then monitor a particular water contaminant issue, thereby providing a full treatment continuum from the moment the water enters the treatment facility until it leaves. Pre-chlorination happens as chlorine is added almost directly to the water after it leaves the treatment plant. The chlorine is normally applied directly to the raw water in the pre-chlorination step or applied to the flash mixer.. To eliminate algae and other forms of aquatic life from the water, chlorine is added to raw water, so that they will not cause problems in the later stages of water treatment. Also, disinfection can occur just before filtration and after sedimentation. This would control biological growth, remove iron and manganese, remove taste and odors, control the growth of algae, and remove water colour. The amount of biological growth ...

Chlorine, a disinfectant commonly used in most wastewater treatment plants, may be failing to completely eliminate pharmaceuticals from wastes. As a result, trace levels of these substances get discharged from the plants to the nations waterways. And now, scientists are reporting preliminary studies that show chlorine treatment may encourage the formation of new, unknown antibiotics that could also enter the environment, potentially contributing to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.

In solid substances used as fuels, bromine originates mainly from flame retarded plastics and textiles, as well as from wastewater sludge. It has been indicated that bromine behaves in a similar way as chlorine with respect to ash forming matter, aerosol formation and high temperature corrosion in biomass and waste fired boilers. In this work, a measurement campaign was carried out in a 20 kW(th) bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) bench scale reactor to characterize the fate of Cl and Br in BFB combustion conditions. Spruce bark was used as the base fuel -serving as a source of alkali metals (mainly K, little Na). The gases HCl and HBr were fed with the fluidization air at different proportions into the BFB unit. In total, six experiments were done. The fate of bromine and chlorine was evaluated by means of several measurements including: FTIR (flue gas measurement), a low-pressure impactor (size distribution and chemical composition of aerosol particles) and deposit probe sampling (deposit growth ...

MAIN CONCLUSION - Banning the use of chlorine chemistry in the manufacture of only three of the major uses of chlorine (steel, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Titanium Dioxide) would result in a requirement to landfill an additional 24.6 billion pounds of waste each year (4.2 billion pounds auto related), raise serious issues regarding recycling with regard to PVC substitutes and raise the cost of related parts by some $2.0 billion a year. In addition, the use of available substitutes for chlorine-based compounds would result in a serious degradation in the quality and performance of automobiles manufactured in North America.PROCESS - Essentially, the process consisted of a micro economic analysis of the impact on the cost and performance of a representative automobile manufactured in North America and the differential environmental impact arising from the use of available substitutes. This entailed breaking the representative car down into its major systems, subsystems and 12,500 components to ...
