The green microalgae Chlorella vulgaris has been widely recognized as a promising candidate for biofuel production due to its ability to store high lipid content and its natural metabolic versatility. Compartmentalized genome-scale metabolic models constructed from genome sequences enable quantitative insight into the transport and metabolism of compounds within a target organism. These metabolic models have long been utilized to generate optimized design strategies for an improved production process. Here, we describe the reconstruction, validation, and application of a genome-scale metabolic model for C. vulgaris UTEX 395, iCZ843. The reconstruction represents the most comprehensive model for any eukaryotic photosynthetic organism to date, based on the genome size and number of genes in the reconstruction. The highly curated model accurately predicts phenotypes under photoautotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic conditions. The model was validated against experimental data and lays the ...

A cultivation system in the two-stage photoautotrophic-photoheterotrophic/mixotrophic mode was adapted to maximize lipid productivity of two freshwater strains of Chlorella sp. grown in brewery wastewater (BWW). The endogenous Chlorella sp. isolated from BWW had a higher growth rate than wild-type Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX-265) while C vulgaris (UTEX-265) had a higher maximal biomass and lipid contents than that of endogenous Chlorella sp., resulting in more than 90% of the inorganic nutrients in both total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) was removed during the first stage in the two-stage photoautotrophic-photoheterotrophic mode in each Chlorella sp. The maximal biomass and lipid contents of C vulgaris (UTEX-265) for single stage photoautotrophic cultivation were 1.5 g/L and 18%, respectively. Importantly, during two-stage photoautotrophic photoheterotrophic cultivation for C vulgaris (UTEX-265), the biomass was increased to 3.5 g/L, and the lipid productivity was increased from 31.1 to 108.0 ...
Chlorella sorokiniana CS-01, UTEX 1230 and UTEX 2714 were maintained in 10% anaerobic digester effluent (ADE) from cattle manure digestion and compared with algal cultivation in Bolds Basal Medium (BBM). Biomass of CS-01 and UTEX 1230 in ADE produced similar or greater than 280mg/L after 21days in BBM, however, UTEX 2714 growth in ADE was suppressed by more than 50% demonstrating a significant species bias to synthetic compared to organic waste-based media. The highest accumulation of protein and starch was exhibited in UTEX 1230 in ADE yielding 34% and 23% ash free dry weight (AFDW), respectively, though fatty acid methyl ester total lipid measured less than 12% AFDW. Results suggest that biomass from UTEX 1230 in ADE may serve as a candidate alga and growth system combination sustainable for animal feed production considering high yields of protein, starch and low lipid accumulation ...

The amino acid sequence of the plastocyanin from the green alga Chlorella fusca was determined. The protein consists of a single polypeptide chain of 98 residues, and was determined by characterization of chymotryptic and thermolysin peptides. The amino acid sequence shows considerable similarity to that of higher plant plastocyanins. The protein contains a single cysteine, and the sequence in the vicinity of this residue is similar to that around the cysteine residue of bacterial azurins. The plastocyanin contains some uncharacterized carbohydrate. Detailed evidence for the sequence of the protein has been deposited as Supplementary Publication SUP 50 036 (17pp., 1 microfiche) at the British Library (Lending Division) (formerly the National Lending Library for Science and Technology), Boston Spa, Yorks. Both viral replication and channel activity are inhibited by the ion channel blockers barium and amantadine but not by cesium. Genes encoding Kcv-like proteins were isolated from 40 additional chlorella viruses. Differences in 16 of the 94 amino acids were detected, producing six Kcv-like proteins with amino acid substitutions occurring in most of the functional domains of the protein (N terminus, transmembrane 1, pore helix, selectivity filter, and transmembrane 2). The six proteins form functional potassium ...
Well, well. Let me take on the industrys response in order of appearance:. Certain extracts from chlorella do, but whole Chlorella does not. For instance, a methanolic extract from Chlorella does have inhibitory effect on mast cells. I should point out however that polysaccharides are insoluble in methanol, so it is safe to assume that this extract did not contain the macrophage-activating polysaccharide from Chlorella at all. A whole Chlorella supplement, does contain it. Next, a certain Chlorella-derived peptide does have an inhibitory effect on macrophage activation by LPS and does alleviate inflammation. It may not sound like the most appetising addition to your diet, but the green algae chlorella has been linked to everything from helping increase athletic indurance1 to acting as a powerful anti-oxidant2. 2017 looks set to be the year the algae is propelled to superfood stardom however, as recently scientists have uncovered it could hold the key to preventing weight gain…. In the new study1, Japanese scientists looked at a specific protein found in chlorella and the effect it had when included in a fatty diet.. They discovered that the protein appeared to have an ability to reduce some of the negative effects of fat within the body, including reducing levels of triglycerides in the liver, when a high fat diet was supplemented with the chlorella extract. Perhaps most excitingly the chlorella protein appeared able to reduce the increase in size of the bodys fat cells, normally seen when eating a diet high in fat, highlighting the potential of the algae in helping prevent weight gain.. ...

Chlorella represents a group of eukaryotic green microalgae that has been receiving increasing scientific and commercial interest. It possesses high photosynthetic ability and is capable of growing robustly under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions as well. Chlorella has long been considered as a source of protein and is now industrially produced for human food and animal feed. Chlorella is also rich in oil, an ideal feedstock for biofuels. The exploration of biofuel production by Chlorella is underway. Chlorella has the ability to fix carbon dioxide efficiently and to remove nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorous, making it a good candidate for greenhouse gas biomitigation and wastewater bioremediation. In addition, Chlorella shows potential as an alternative expression host for recombinant protein production, though challenges remain to be addressed. Currently, omics analyses of certain Chlorella strains are being performed, which will help to unravel the biological implications of Chlorella and

This study investigated two wildtype green algae, Micractinium sp. and Chlorella sp., for their growth in high nitrogen wastewater (mixture of sludge centrate and primary effluent wastewater) and subsequent anaerobic digestion under mesophilic conditions. Extraction and analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in both algal species during cultivation showed that Micractinium generated larger quantity of EPS-proteins than Chlorella. Anaerobic digestion of harvested algae showed the opposite trend that Chlorella allowed a higher CH4 yield on the volatile solids fed the digester (VSfed) of 230 dm3 kg−1 than Micractinium (209 dm3 kg−1). These results suggested that different growth patterns of two types of algae, with different quantity of EPS expressed, affected anaerobic digestibility and biogas yield. Co-digestion of algae with waste activated sludge (WAS) improved the volatile solids reduction, hydrolysis efficiency as well as the biogas yields of algae.. ...

Treating biosolids from industrial, urban, and agricultural plants produces high amounts of water. After organic pollutants and non-essential heavy metals have been removed, these wastewaters are still rich in trace elements such as zinc (Zn), copper, or manganese (Mn) and have high conductivity and extremely variable pH. In this study, an isolated Chlorella sp. strain was grown for 21 days in nutrient solutions enriched with known amounts of Zn or Mn to obtain concentrations three (4.0 mg L−1)- and six (1.0 mg L−1)-fold higher than the basal medium levels, respectively, and over the limits permitted in aquatic environments. The green alga exhibited high tolerance to Zn and Mn, with the maximum abatement of Zn (28-30%) and Mn (60-63.5%) after 14 and 7 days of culture, respectively. Mn stimulated the growth rate and biomass production of Chlorella, which showed the highest carbon levels just in the first week. In both treatments, the nitrogen and protein contents ...
Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a freshwater single-celled green algae, is more popular in Japan as a regular supplement than vitamin C. An estimated 5 million Japanese use this medicinal algae every day. Chlorellas broad spectrum health benefits, amply researched by Japanese scientists, include the impressive fact that it contains 60% protein, including all the essential amino acids, and high levels of beta carotene and chlorophyll.. It is to chlorellas high chlorophyll content (more chlorophyll per gram than any other plant) that many researchers and enthusiastic users attribute its multiple health benefits.. Both scientific documentation and reliable anecdotal reports indicate that chlorella is effective in helping to reduce the symptoms of numerous types of cancers, diabetes, low blood sugar, arthritis, AIDS, pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, peptic ulcers, viral and bacterial infections, anemia, and multiple sclerosis.. Aposymbiotic polyps of Hydra viridis were infected with 17 strains of in vitro cultured Chlorella sp. Larvae of Artemia fed with the chlorellae were used as an infecting vector. Of the 17 strains, seven formed stable symbioses and one formed a transient infection that disappeared within several weeks. Chlorellae of the nine other strains were cleared out of the infected hydra within 2-3 days. There was a distinct correlation between the ability of the chlorellae to form stable symbioses and their ability to adapt and grow in media enriched with 0.5% proteose peptone. Only strains that grew in the latter medium formed symbioses with the hydra. The symbioses formed with the different strains of chlorellae differed from one another. Hydra infected with some strains greened completely while those infected with other strains greened only partially. The degree of infection varied also within each population, and there were differences in the distribution of the various chlorellae along the stalk and ...

Of course, there may be gaps in my research, but this is what I came up with. As you can see, I couldnt verify many of the famous claims, but I was able to find at least a few strongly suggestive studies. Theres never anything wrong with getting more animo acid and EFA bang for your buck, nor with boosting your B-vitamin and magnesium intake. So I put chlorella in the category of superfood that Ill use when its available (that is, if Ive been gifted with samples, or if I have been able to work it into my budget), and not worry about when its not.. If youre eating a well rounded and healthy diet, smoothie add-ins like chlorella shouldnt be vital to your health-count on the fruits, veggies, and plant protein for that. But if you have the means to experiment with new, fun ingredients, you can try chlorella out; think of it as an added bonus to your diet.. Note that chlorella must be labeled as cracked cell wall in order for you to assimilate the nutrients-otherwise, theyll just pass ...

N2 - The major capsid protein Vp54 from the prototype chlorovirus Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus 1 (PBCV-1) contains four Asnlinked glycans. The structure of the four N-linked oligosaccharides and the type of substitution at each glycosylation site was determined by chemical, spectroscopic, and spectrometric analyses. Vp54 glycosylation is unusual in many ways, including: (i) unlike most viruses, PBCV-1 encodes most, if not all, of the machinery to glycosylate its major capsid protein; (ii) the glycans are attached to the protein by a β-glucose ...
Role of Chlorella Vulgaris as A Salt Resistant Barrier for Salt Compromised Crops, Jawaher Ahmad, Hoda Ahmed , Reda Moghaieb, Chlorella Vulgaris is a commonly present green alga that is present in freshwater in the form of a single-celled organism with greater photosynthetic efficiency. It is sufficiently rich with macro and micronutrients include carbohydrates and proteins. Previous reports suggested that Chlorella Vulgaris has the potential to survive in a great saline environment. The current research focused on the application of C. Vulgaris at two crop plant includes cherry tomato and chilli pepper. These plants are usually sensitive against salt, while C. vulgaris enhanced the ability of such plants to bear excessive salinity. One-month plant seedlings were treated with 100mM and 1M concentration of NaCl along with C. Vulgaris and observed for two weeks period. The plant growth and gene expression of rbcl and sos1 were collected. Gene expression analyses revealed that plants showed high salt

As noted above, a common assumption is that viruses are molecular pirates, which acquire genes from their hosts (Sinkovics et al., 1998; Christie and Dokland, 2012). While this view of viruses as mere pick pockets (Moreira and López-García, 2009) can explain the origin of some viral genes (Murphy, 1994), it does not explain the origin of all virus genes, including the virus-encoded K+ channel-encoding genes. If the chlorovirus K+ channel genes were acquired from their algal host, one would expect that coevolution occurred between the virus and host K+ channel-encoded genes. This assumption of coevolution was recently tested experimentally because the genomes of two algal virus hosts, C. variabilis (Blanc et al., 2010) and E. siliculosus (Cock et al., 2010), have been sequenced and annotated. The coccal green alga Chlorella spp. and the filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus spp. are evolutionary very distant (Yoon et al., 2004). However, they are hosts for phycodnaviruses PBCV-1 and Esv-1, ...

I began taking Spirulina in February 1997 and I found that there are many benef its to doing so. For one thing, I feel more energy and in particular, at night when I go to bed, many times I feel tired and so I pop open the bottle of powde r (I take it in powder form). And then I pour some powder out and consume it. Immediately, and I ...
Phycodnaviridae are viruses with double-stranded DNA that infect chlorella, algal symbionts of paramecia and hydras. Members and prospective members of the family are large icosahedral viruses that infect eukaryotic algae. It is expected that the Phycodnaviridae will evolve into a large complex family or, more likely, split into a several families as new algal viruses are isolated and characterized. The reason for the complexity can be explained by a recent provocative paper that expanded the phylogenetic analysis and placed phycodnaviridae near the root of all eukaryotic DNA polymerases. So far, the genomes of two phycodnaviruses have been completely sequenced, a Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus (PCBV-1) and an Ectocarpus siliculosus virus (EsV-1) and scientists are in the process of sequencing an E. huxleyi virus (EhV-86). The genomes of these three viruses have only nine genes in common, which is particularly surprising since they are all from the same virus family. ...

Microalgae is an economical and potential raw material of biomass energy, which offer a wide range of commercial potential to produce valuable substances for applications in aquaculture feed, pharmaceutical purposes and biofuels production. However, lack of an economical, efficient and convenient method to harvest microalgae is a bottleneck to boost their full-scale application. Hence, this study was performed to investigate the potentialities of Moringa oleifera seed derivatives as an environmentally bio-coagulant to harvest microalgae Chlorella sp. biomass from the water column, which acts as a binder to coagulate particulate impurities to form larger aggregates. Results shown M. oleifera to have better biomass recovery of 122.51% as compared to 37.08% of alum at similar dosages of 10 mg·L-1. In addition, it was found that the zeta potential values of mixed microalgae-coagulant suspension shows positive correlation on the flocculation parameters. For biomass recovery, the correlation for M. ...
The growth response of Chlorella vulgaris to low concentration of dimethoate, an organophosphorus pesticide, was studied. There are several different species of these two algae, however the ones that I speak of in this book are Spirulina Platensis and Chlorella Pyrenoidosa. Another Chlorella product found on the market is chlorella vulgaris, which is nutritionally inferior to its powerful cousin Pyrenoidosa. The kind of alga found in swimming pools closely resembles chlorella vulgaris, which does not have the broad array of nutrients that Pyrenoidosa has, nor its incredible dietary fiber. The Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) in vulgaris is miniscule compared to Pyrenoidosa. Vulgaris is cultivated by fermentation instead of grown with sunlight. Its growing time is only three days whereas Pyrenoidosa takes seven days to mature because it is a far more complex whole food with a much greater array of nutrients than vulgaris. Cultivating a food with sunlight is a much more natural way to grow a food compared to simply fermenting it. For one thing, chlorophyll can not be created without sunlight, which is not used in the ...
The diversity of green microalgae in subaerial habitats remains largely unexplored and a number of new genus- and species-level lineages have been discovered recently. The traditional green algal genus, Chlorella, which accommodated coccoid unicellular green algal species with globular to oval cells, reproducing entirely by autospores, has been found to be polyphyletic. In this study, we provide a detailed characterization of two strains of microalgae isolated from tree bark in the Mediterranean. These algae share the general Chlorella-like morphology and their 18S rRNA and rbcL gene sequences place them in the Trebouxiophyceae. Strain CAUP H8401 forms an independent trebouxiophycean lineage, together with three previously published 18S rRNA gene environmental sequences of undescribed microalgae, which were retrieved from profoundly different habitats. In contrast, strain CAUP H7902 is related to Kalinella bambusicola in the Watanabea clade of the Trebouxiophyceae on the basis of its 18S rRNA gene
TY - JOUR. T1 - Variation in resistance to spot blotch and the aggressiveness of Bipolaris sorokiniana on barley and wheat cultivars. AU - Al-Sadi, A. M.. PY - 2016. Y1 - 2016. N2 - Bipolaris sorokiniana is the causal agent of spot blotch and other diseases in barley and wheat in different parts of the world. This study investigated the reaction of nine barley cultivars and four wheat cultivars to infection by 11 B. sorokiniana isolates. All B. sorokiniana isolates produced necrotic lesions on the inoculated barley and wheat cultivars, with no significant differences among most isolates in the necrotic lesion size. However, B. sorokiniana isolates induced significantly varying levels of chlorotic lesions and spores eight days following inoculation (P ,0.05). Isolates BsJ53 and BsJ51 were the most aggressive on barley cultivars, while isolates BsJ53, BsJ51, BsWM and BsWS were the most aggressive on wheat cultivars. The aggressive isolates resulted in large chlorotic lesions (, 7 mm) and produced ...
Thymidylate synthase ThyX, required for DNA synthesis in many pathogenic bacteria, is considered a promising antimicrobial target. It binds FAD and three substrates, producing dTMP (2′-deoxythymidine-5′-monophosphate) from dUMP (2′-deoxyuridine-5′-monophosphate). However, ThyX proteins also act as NADPH oxidase by reacting directly with O2. In the present study we investigated the dynamic interplay between the substrates and their role in competing with this wasteful and potentially harmful oxidase reaction in catalytically efficient ThyX from Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus-1. dUMP binding accelerates the O2-insensitive half-reaction between NADPH and FAD by over four orders of magnitude to ~30 s−1. Thus, although dUMP does not have a direct role in FAD reduction, any turnover with molecular O2 requires its presence. Inversely, NADPH accommodation accelerates dUMP binding ~3-fold and apparently precedes dUMP binding under physiological conditions. In the oxidative half-reaction, excess
There are two basic forms of algae that you can easily get your hands on at health food stores, on the internet, or in supplements: chlorella and spirulina.. Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater micro-algae that contains the highest known quality of chlorophyll found in a nature. Chlorophyll has a chemical structure very similar to hemoglobin, and because of these properties, it can carry oxygen around in the blood and increase your red blood cell count. There is even research that shows that a combination of chlorophyll in your bloodstream and exposure to sunlight can allow you to produce ATP without actually eating any calories.. Compared to other commercial sources of chlorophyll like wheat grass, barley, and alfalfa (all popular ingredients in greens supplements), chlorella has five times more chlorophyll than wheat grass, twelve times more than barley and nearly ten times more than alfalfa. Because of its extreme photosynthetic efficiency from the high levels of chlorophyll, chlorella ...

Microalgae are prime targets for research on biofuels. Leading candidates as alternative sources of biodiesel, their culture has the unquestionable advantage, compared to oleaginous land plants, of not competing with cultivated land necessary for human food. Producing fuel from water, sunlight and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere appears as a miracle solution that has fostered numerous research programs since the 1970s. Chlorella is particularly interesting for the development of second-generation biodiesel thanks to its high lipid content (it only contains 30 % dry matter). Although several genomes of green algae (Chlorophyta) have already been sequenced (Chlamydomonas, Micromonas and Ostreococcus), Chlorella had not been analyzed until now, despite its economic role as long-established food supplement. The analysis of the Chlorella genome, coordinated by Guillaume Blanc, CNRS researcher, predicts 9,791 protein genes, a total comparable to that of its cousin Micromonas. This new genomic data ...

Chlorella and Spirulina are superficially similar, being that both are types of algaes that are bursting with nutrients. Yet there are significant differences between each. There are times where it may be best to focus on one as well as times youll want to mix both. Whilst we often summarise by saying that Spirulina has the most rebuilding qualities and Chlorella the most for detoxification, theres a whole load more to find out about each.. In the accompanying paper, we demonstrated that Chlorella kessleri uses prokaryotic and eukaryotic pathways to synthesize sn-1-C18-sn-2-C16 (C18/C16, prokaryotic lipids) and sn-1-C18-sn-2-C18 (C18/C18, eukaryotic lipids) species, respectively, in chloroplast lipids such as monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG). In this study, to examine the effect of CO2 on lipid metabolism, we compared the fatty acid distributions at the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of each major lipid, i.e. MGDG, DGDG, phosphatidylcholine (PC), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and the patterns of incorporation of [14C]acetate into fatty acids and lipids in vivo between cells of C. kessleri grown under ordinary air (low-CO2 cells) and ones grown under CO2-enriched air (high-CO2 cells). Low-CO2 cells, as compared with high-CO2 cells, showed elevated contents of 18:3(9,12,15), especially at both the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of MGDG and DGDG, and also at the sn-2 position of PC and PE. THE OBJECTIVE of this research was to compare physiological response of fresh water algae |i|(Chlorella vulgaris)|/i| and marine algae (Chlorella salina) to different salinity levels. These algae were isolated and cultivated in appropriate media for a period of 8 days.,|i| C. vulgaris|/i| could survive till 0.8 molar NaCl, while the marine strain |i|(C. salina)|/i| survived up to 2 molar NaCl. Thus, the marine alga showed a wide range of salinity tolerance, whereas the fresh water alga showed a narrows range of salinity tolerance. The dry weight of C. salina was 2-folds at 1M NaCl and slightly changed at 2 M NaCl as compared to the control value. In|i| C. vulgaris|/i| dry weight was progressively decreased with increase of salinity. Hypo and hyper saline media induced significant stimulation in photosynthesis pigments, carbohydrate, protein, Na+ and K+ contents in C. salina. On the other hand, free amino acids, proline, MDA contents and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, POD and APX) were
