Janusz Korczak, whose original name was Henryk Goldszmit, is seen as the father of the very idea that children also have rights - human rights. His thinking had a profound impact on the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and continue to influence the child-friendly programmes of the Council of Europe.Korczak´s message was about respect for children, respect for their inherent value as human beings but also for their capacity and competence. Though continuously practicing as a medical doctor and assisting in orphanages, he was also a writer. His essay The Childs Right to Respect in which he analyses the role of adults and the place of children in society is published in this volume.Korczaks vision about childrens rights is still relevant. What can we learn from his ideas when tackling todays problems? Five childrens rights activists analysed current problems in the spirit of Korczak. This book conveys the deeper meaning and importance of the rights of children. Janusz
Melanie: I tell my kids every day how much I love them and kiss them good night before bedtime!. Micelle: I correct my children and hold them accountable for their choices and actions. My children know they are loved, but it is when I parent them and guide them in the right direction that I feel like I am being a good parent.. Rosa: I read to my children every night at bedtime. My parents never read to me, and I fall asleep if I tried to read anything bigger than a magazine. But my children love reading, and I believe it is because I read to them nightly.. Lori: I feel like a good parent because of the rapport I have with my three children. They know they can tell me anything, and I will tell them my honest opinion or what I feel is in their best interest, and I will love them regardless of their choices.. Shari: I hold the gospel out to my children on a daily basis and let them see what Christ has done for me and is doing in me. That means being quick to repent and trying to show them grace and ...

The timeline of childrens rights in the United Kingdom includes a variety of events that are both political and grassroots in nature. The UK government maintains a position that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is not legally enforceable and is hence aspirational only, although a 2003 ECHR ruling states that, "The human rights of children and the standards to which all governments must aspire in realising these rights for all children are set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child."[1] Eighteen years after ratification, the four Childrens Commissioners in the UK (including those for the three devolved administrations) have united in calling for adoption of the Convention into domestic legislation, making childrens rights recognised and legally binding.[2]. Opponents of childrens rights often raise the objection that rights must entail responsibilities.[3] The childrens rights movement asserts rather that children have rights which adults, states ...
In July and August of 2009, Child Rights International had the opportunity to collaborate with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) on a project that provided 100 laptop computers to school in Okorase in the Eastern region for an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) project. This innovative project was also developed and implemented in collaboration with the National Program for the Elimination of Child Labour in the Cocoa Sector.. As part of the project, three student experts from the University of City University of New York, Hunter College, Monroe College, and New York University trained the students on how to use the computers. The objective of the project was to make information technology available to rural children in the cocoa growing areas, to assist them in acquiring critical ICT skills, and to influence the attitudes of parents and children in terms of the value and relevance of education.. The training aimed to empower and enable students to learn about ICT and to utilize those ...

Childrens rights on the global stage: 1990-99. The Declaration of the Rights of the Child had been adopted in 1959 by the UN General Assembly. After a period of limited progress in formally articulating child rights, the International Year of the Child, held in 1979 on the 20th anniversary of the Declaration, succeeded in rekindling interest. NGOs working on behalf of children argued that child rights should be enshrined in law, and helped establish an intergovernmental group to begin drafting a convention to replace the 1959 Declaration.. During the 1980s, UNICEF had been involved with analysis and policy responses for what were then called children in especially difficult circumstances - children living or working on the streets, those affected by armed conflict, suffering from exploitation or with disabilities. Recognizing the convergence among this work, the child survival and development revolution, and the movement for child rights, UNICEF threw its weight behind the work on a new ...

By turns a distiller, a lawyer, and an extremely successful business entrepreneur, Zanvyl Krieger made his name best known as an extraordinary philanthropist. His greatest single gift was a $50 million challenge grant, made in 1992, to the School of Arts and Sciences of the Johns Hopkins University. The gift is one of the largest ever directed exclusively to a U.S. school or college of arts and sciences, the division of a university that focuses on the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. To pay fitting tribute, Hopkins renamed its core institution, so that it is now the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.. Krieger was a life-long Baltimorean with committed civic ties. He played an ownership role in both the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Colts. His charitable concerns included the Krieger Childrens Eye Center at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute; the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a world-renowned clinic for ...

CALGARY-The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre is launching a month-long campaign aimed at promoting support for child abuse victims and the prevention of sexual and physical abuse.. The announcement came Monday as the centre marked its five-year anniversary and October as Child Abuse Prevention Month in conjunction with the provincial government.. "(Its) a bittersweet moment," said the centres CEO Sara Austin. "In our first five years, we served more than 7,500 children and youth. And we see, on average, 130 new cases of child abuse every single month.". She said the campaign uses a broad definition of child abuse that encompasses all forms - physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, and neglect.. But the centres mandate, she said, is to support the prevention of "all forms of sexual abuse of children, as well as the most severe forms of physical abuse or neglect.". Thats why the day is bittersweet - the 7,500-plus children served by the centre represent victims of sexual abuse and the most ...

[Helping Others Understand is an open-ended, intermittent series designed to support stroke survivors and family caregivers with helping friends and family better understand the nuances, complications and realistic expectations for common post-stroke conditions. If there is a specific post-stroke condition youd like to see us address in future issues, we invite you to let us know: [email protected]] Stroke is unpredictable both in its arrival and in the consequences it leaves, but one common stroke deficit is fatigue. Some studies indicate that as many as 70 percent of survivors experience fatigue at some time following their stroke. Unlike exertional fatigue that we feel after working in the yard, post-stroke fatigue occurs from doing typical everyday tasks or sometimes from not doing anything.

The 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN Convention)1 provides children with the right of the highest attainable standard of health (article 24). All countries in the world except the United States have now ratified this convention, which has implications for national health policy and priorities regarding health care for every child. The convention places an obligation on all public and private health institutions to ensure that the best interest of the child is assessed and taken as a primary consideration in all actions affecting children. The important point emphasized by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child is that, based on the UN Convention, each child has a right to be assessed individually before a decision is made regarding proper treatment. As a consequence, the UN Convention may change practice in handling of newborns in a wider perspective.. In neonatology, decisions to initiate or forego intensive care for certain infants such as the ...
Ethics and Law at McGill University. Childrens Human Rights to Natural Human Origin. Some old and new phenomena - adoption is old, new reproductive and genetic technologies and same-sex marriage are new - have recently thrown the issue of childrens rights with respect to their biological origins and biological families into the public policy spotlight and public square debate. Adoption has long challenged childrens rights with respect to their biological families. Early in the 20th century, societally condoned sperm donation presented a similar challenge. In the last thirty years new reproductive and genetic technologies (NRTs) have brought, and will continue to bring, unprecedented challenges. And, most recently same-sex marriage has done so. Millions of children have no access to education, work long hours under hazardous conditions and are forced to serve as soldiers in armed conflict. They suffer targeted attacks on their schools and teachers or languish in institutions or detention centers, where they endure inhumane conditions and assaults on their dignity. Young and immature, they are often easily exploited.
What should be expected of religious people?. What could such people do that they have not already tried? Are religious people miracle workers? For what is needed is transformation. And for this we must upset and upturn our understanding of what is acceptable in our world. Not just as it affects children, but for everyone.. I hope to focus my enquiry on a new indicator of worth rather than on the specifics of the various rights. My hypothesis is that it is not only the little world of the child s immediate survival, health and safety that has to be changed; it is the world s overall character that cries out to be rescued and transformed.. The present condition and future prospects for children depend on more than the Convention that has been written for them. Much else must change. Otherwise we help our children through their childhood years but leave them a damaged world to live in, with a poisoned manifesto on how to run it.. What is gained for either the world or its people --- save for ...

The State of Our Children is not a new playbook or set of recommendations to address the complex challenges facing our rapidly growing county. And while it constitutes a toolset crafted by, and for, the child-serving community, its reach should not end there.
