This paper reviews the literature on the nature and incidence of child sexual abuse, explores the link between child sexual abuse and later sexual exploitation, and reviews the literature on prevention strategies and effective interventions in child sexual abuse services. Our understanding of the international epidemiology of child sexual abuse is considerably greater than it was just 10 years ago, and studies from around the world are examined. Childhood sexual abuse can involve a wide number of psychological sequelae, including low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Numerous studies have noted that child sexual abuse victims are vulnerable to later sexual revictimization, as well as the link between child sexual abuse and later engagement in high-risk sexual behaviour. Survivors of child sexual abuse are more likely to have multiple sex partners, become pregnant as teenagers, and experience sexual assault as adults. Various models which attempt to account for this inter-relatio... ...
Sinn Féin TD for Limerick City Maurice Quinlivan this evening challenged the Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh on the treatment of survivors of child sexual abuse by this government.. Deputy Quinlivan called on the Minister to stop using the courts to fight survivors of child sexual abuse and provide them with compensation that will allow them to get justice and move on with their lives.. Speaking in the Dáil this evening, the Limerick City TD said:. "This is a topic that I have a deep personal interest in, having worked closely for a number of years now with members of VOCADS and survivors of abuse from Creagh Lane National School.. "To be honest, Im absolutely disgusted at how survivors of historical child sexual abuse have been treated by Fine Gael and by previous governments.. "These men are currently barred from accessing compensation for the horrific abuse they suffered, and the government has steadfastly stood in their way of justice.. "Last July the Dáil instructed this ...
With the rise in reporting of sexual abuse of children, the Baptist Standard is stepping away from our normal year-end round-up to publish something different than the ongoing and important news coverage of these tragedies.. In a Dec. 27 special edition on child sexual abuse, we hope to open the door to healing and restoration for victims and survivors and to help individuals, families and churches to become safer for the most vulnerable among us.. We realize sexual abuse is a very sensitive topic. There are those who have been sexually abused who cannot read one more story about this traumatizing experience being inflicted on yet one more child. There are those who mourn the hurt done to their children and being betrayed by people they trusted. There are those who have worked hard to overcome their experience and are ready to move on. There are those who have never told a soul about their terrible secret. There are those fortunate enough not to understand child sexual abuse but who care very ...
It could be argued that critical conversations are the mechanism in which tangible social change can occur. The art of sharing, arguing, or deconstructing theoretical concepts, until they become more malleable for practice, is not easy, but moves us in the field of child sexual abuse prevention to the places we want to go. As an example, the Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation has released the Six Pillars of Prevention to build a dialogue around the creation of a comprehensive policy agenda to benefit children and prevent sexual abuse. In this web conference, participants will learn how policy matters in prevention work, and what tools they can use to bridge the theory of action with the practice of action. The prevalence of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) is estimated at an alarming 19% domestically (CDC 2010), rates comparable to endemic settings in certain regions of sub-Saharan Africa where approximately 20% of the adult population is HIV infected. Studies have also demonstrated a staggeringly high prevalence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in MSM, and shown an association between CSA and HIV risk in MSM. A successful intervention for MSM with a CSA history to prevent HIV has the potential to avert infections among some of the riskiest members of the most HIV vulnerable group in the U.S. Notwithstanding the ability of the existing HIV prevention interventions to show reductions in sexual risk taking, the recent successes of chemoprophylaxis, current policy initiatives, and empirically supported recommendations, all support development of combination prevention interventions that can specify multiple prevention targets, address related risk factors and barriers, and are grounded in a ...

Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Martin Kenny TD has welcomed Judge Iarfhlaith ONeills report finding that an ECHR ruling had been misinterpreted and had denied victims of historical child sexual abuse access to a redress scheme to which they are entitled. Deputy Kenny said:. "Judge ONeills report is welcome and should serve to encourage survivors of historical child sexual abuse in their struggle for justice and for compensation.. "The state has been guilty of obstructing victims in that struggle and one Minister for Education after another, including Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, despite his statements now, have forced victims of abuse to protest publicly in order to be heard.. "Then they were obliged to go to the European Court of Human Rights to highlight the injustice they were fighting.. "I hope the government will not delay another day in acting on this report and ensure that compensation is paid to those survivors who have waited so long and fought so hard.. "The state has ...
Family structure is the most important risk factor in child sexual abuse. Children who live with two married biological parents are at low risk for abuse. The risk increases when children live with step-parents or a single parent. Children living without either parent (foster children) are 10 times more likely to be sexually abused than children that live with both biological parents. Children who live with a single parent that has a live-in partner are at the highest risk: they are 20 times more likely to be victims of child sexual abuse than children living with both biological parents (Sedlack, et. al., 2010 ...

Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program CSAPP began in 1995 and aims to reduce the incidence and impact of child sexual abuse among Australian children.
Like children and youth, adults experience a range of affects from childhood sexual abuse. Some individuals work through their abuse and experience minimal current impact. Others are devastated by the abuse and deal with the ramifications of it every day of their adult lives. Still others grow as a result of the abuse, even becoming advocates or helpers for other victims of abuse.. Researchers Laura Murray, Amanda Nguyen and Judith Cohen point out in their article "Child Sexual Abuse" in the journal Child and Adolescents Psychiatric Clinics of North America that adult survivors of sexual abuse can experience health problems, may struggle with drugs and alcohol, face marriage and family relational challenges, and are at increased risk for future sexual victimization and high-risk sexual behaviors.. Commonly, victimized adults have strong feelings of shame, which can lead to feelings of embarrassment and of being exposed. Adult survivors often are quite secretive about their abuse histories, ...

Historical child sexual abuse victim receives $435,000 in compensation for sexual abuse suffered at a NSW youth group in 1980s with the help of GMP Lawyers.
Background The disclosure of widespread sexual abuse committed by professional educators and clergymen in institutions in Germany ignited a national political debate, in which special attention was paid to church-run institutions. than those who had been in secular institutions. Almost half the victims had been abused physically as well as sexually, and most victims reported that the abuse had occurred repeatedly and that the assaults had been committed by males. Patterns of abuse (time, type, and extent), and the gender of the offenders did not differ between the three groups. Intercourse was more frequently reported by older victims and by females. Similar percentages of victims in all groups reported current psychiatric diagnoses (depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD). Significantly more victims from Protestant institutions reported having current psychosocial problems. Conclusion The results suggest that child sexual abuse in institutions is attributable to the nature of institutional ...
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Definitions Childhood sexual abuse can be defined as any exposure to sexual acts imposed on children who inherently lack the emotional, maturational, and cognitive development to understand or to consent to such acts. These acts do not always involve sexual intercourse or physical force; rather, they involve manipulation and trickery. Authority and power enable the perpetrator to coerce the child into compliance. Characteristics and motivations of perpetrators of childhood sexual abuse vary: some may act out sexually to exert dominance over another individual; others may initiate the abuse for their own sexual gratification (5, 6). Although specific legal definitions may vary among states, there is widespread agreement that abusive sexual contact can include breast and genital fondling, oral and anal sex, and vaginal intercourse. Definitions have been expanded to include noncontact events such as coercion to watch sexual acts or posing in child ...

Child sexual abuse in the United Kingdom has been reported in the country throughout its history. In about 90% of cases the abuser is a person known to the child. However well-publicised cases in recent years have involved popular entertainers, politicians, military personnel, and other officials. Around 23,000 cases were identified during 2012/2013, the latest year for which records exist: these the figures exclude 16- and 17-year-olds, and many cases of abuse go unreported. In 2012, celebrity Jimmy Savile (who had died the previous year) was posthumously identified as having been a predatory child sexual abuser for the previous six decades. Subsequent investigations, including those of Operation Yewtree, led to the conviction of several prominent "household names" in the media, allegations against prominent politicians (mostly deceased), and calls for a public inquiry to establish what had been known by those responsible for the institutions where abuse had taken place. An Independent Inquiry ...

In the United States, one in 10 children will be sexually abused before the age of 18, and children with disabilities are three times more likely to suffer this kind of abuse. Confronted daily with child sexual abuse, health care workers are distinctly aware of this plight.
Recent events, including the conviction and sentencing of George Pell for sexually abusing two children in the 1990s and the documentary airing allegations about Michael Jacksons abuse of two young boys, have made prominent the topic of child sexual abuse. Many parents may be concerned about the safety of their child, and whether they are missing signs the child may be being groomed, or sexually abused.

This edited collection aims to address directly and offer new insights into this debate. It responds directly to Kuehnle and Connells edited volume, The Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse Allegations: A Comprehensive Guide to Assessment and Testimony (2009), which included chapters which advocated strong specificity positions at the expense of sensitivity. The chapters in this collection feature both challenges to, and replies by, the authors in Kuehnle and Connells book, making this an essential resource that moves the debate forward.. ...

In the present study, our aim was to examine longitudinal posttraumatic stress symptom (PTSS) trajectories in a Norwegian sample of adults who had experienced sexual abuse during childhood, and to identify predictors of PTSS-trajectory belongingness. The sample consisted of 138 adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (96.4% women, mean age=42.9years, mean age at the first abuse=5.9 years), recruited from support centers for sexual abuse survivors. The majority (78.3%) reported penetrative abuse, and a large proportion of the sample reported that the perpetrator was a biological parent (38.4%) or someone they trusted (76.1%), reflecting a high severity level of the abusive experiences. Latent Profile Analyses revealed the best overall fit for a two PTSS-trajectories model; one trajectory characterized by sub-clinical and decreasing level of PTSS (54.9%), and the other by high and slightly decreasing level of PTSS (45.1%). Increased odds for belonging to the trajectory with clinical level ...
It is a contributing cause of 17 per cent of cases of psychotic illness including schizophrenia, Professor Paul Bebbington, Head of the Department of Mental Health Sciences at UCL (University College London), told the Congress.. "The worse the abuse, the more it increases the risk of developing psychosis. Someone who has experienced non-consensual sexual intercourse before the age of 16 is 10 times more likely to develop the mental disorder," Professor Bebbington said.. He continued: "This is especially significant because sexual abuse is common in childhood. Eight in every 100 people have experienced molestation while one per cent of men and three per cent of women report having had non-consensual sexual intercourse under the age of 16. It is possible to calculate that if childhood sexual abuse ceased, there might be as much as a 17 per cent reduction in people suffering from schizophrenia.". Professor Bebbington is lead researcher on the new research which is published today (Friday, 1 July) ...
Finally, and most importantly, at the heart of every child sexual abuse case are the child victims. We should not minimize the trauma child victims suffer as a result of abuse by youth with sexual behavior problems. Whether the offender is a sibling, friend, or extended family member, the victims suffer a betrayal of trust and a loss of personal safety that is deeply wounding. Similar to other forms of child sexual abuse where the offender is within the family, these child victims struggle with both their fear of continued abuse and their love for the family member that has harmed them. As a society, we have failed to protect these victims, and we owe them the evidence-based treatment needed to heal, as well as our support as they go through the challenging healing process. ...
Child-on-child sexual abuse is a form of child sexual abuse in which a prepubescent child is sexually abused by one or more other children or adolescents, and in which no adult is directly involved. While this includes when one of the children uses physical force, threats, trickery or emotional manipulation to elicit cooperation, it also can include non-coercive situations where the initiator proposes or starts a sexual act that the victim does not understand the nature of and simply goes along with, not comprehending its implications or what the consequences might be.[1] Child-on-child sexual abuse is differentiated from normative sexual play or anatomical curiosity and exploration (e.g. "playing doctor") because child-on-child sexual abuse is an overt and deliberate action directed at sexual stimulation, including orgasm.[2] When sexual abuse is perpetrated by one sibling upon another, it is known as "intersibling abuse".[3] When victims grow up, they often have distorted recall of the act, ...

This is a guest post by Wiley R. Wiley R. uses female pronouns and masculine honorifics. She sporadically dispenses gems of wisdom on Twitter.. In addition, I want to emphasize that this piece is explicitly about *my* process, and I will be focusing on outlining the difficulties I encountered in my recovery, and discussing what I believe could have helped me heal more quickly and fully. When I was about fifteen my cross-country coach was accused of child molestation. The girls he was accused of molesting looked like me-blonde, blue-eyed runners. I was confused and angry about the whole situation, and I remember asking my mother why I wasnt targeted. She responded that predators can tell when a child is properly looked after, and that they avoid those children. She said that Mr. Vespie* could tell that I had a mother who was my fierce advocate and that no ...
Underreporting of childhood sexual abuse is a major barrier to obtaining reliable prevalence estimates. We tested the sensitivity and specificity of the face-to-face-interview (FTFI) method by comparing the number of disclosures of forced sex against a more confidential mode of data collection, the sealed-envelope method (SEM). We also report on characteristics of individuals associated with non-disclosure in FTFIs. Secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2014, with n = 3843 children attending primary school in Luwero District, Uganda. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated, and mixed effects logistic regression models tested factors associated with disclosure in one or both modes. In the FTFI, 1.1% (n = 42) of children reported ever experiencing forced sex, compared to 7.0% (n = 268) in the SEM. The FTFI method demonstrated low sensitivity (13.1%, 95%CI 9.3-17.7%) and high specificity (99.8%, 95%CI 99.6-99.9%) in detecting cases of forced sex, when compared to ...

AMY GOODMAN: So, that is Common raising two points about this film. One is to show there is another kind of man, outside of the sexual abuser, you might say "rapist." Youve chosen not to say "rapist" at this point. You were 13, he was 40. And the other is the issue of therapy. And hes talking about in communities of color.. JENNIFER FOX: I mean, two things. First of all, language matters. I just want to point out the word "rapist" versus "sexual abuse." Sexual abuse has a very specific paradigm, that takes time, that is about the manipulation of an adult and a child. It is not using violence to get the end means. And thats why dont use the word "rape." And I think we have to be very specific with language here.. In terms of the good man, I think we really do need men like Martin, who actually represents my true boyfriend, now husband, who can tolerate a woman going through something very, very difficult, and not fly off the handle and not leave her. And thats the character Common is ...

FRIDAY, Nov. 22, 2019 (HealthDay News) -- Two in three survivors of childhood sexual abuse have good mental health, but a new study suggests that social isolation, chronic pain, substance abuse and depression can hinder recovery.. Researchers looked at 651 Canadian survivors to identify factors associated with what the researchers call complete mental health.. "Remarkably, two-thirds [65%] of the childhood sexual abuse survivors in our sample met the criteria for complete mental health -- defined as being happy or satisfied with life most days in the past month, having high levels of social and psychological well-being in the past month, and being free of mental illness, suicidal thoughts and substance dependence in the past year," said lead author Esme Fuller-Thomson. She is director of the Institute for Life Course and Aging at the University of Toronto.. "While the prevalence of complete mental health among childhood sexual abuse survivors is higher than we had expected, it is still ...
