N2 - The chicken B cell line DT40 undergoes hypermutation of immunoglobulin variable region (IgV) genes during culture, thereby constituting an antibody (Ab) library. We previously established an in vitro Ab generation system using an engineered line DT40-SW whose hypermutation machinery can be switched on and off. Abs for various antigens (Ags) can be obtained from the DT40-SW library and the specificity of the Ag-specific clones can be stabilized by stopping hypermutation. Furthermore, the affinity of obtained monoclonal Abs (mAbs) can be improved through further mutation followed by selection, a process analogous to affinity maturation that occurs in vivo. Although gene ...
MTILENI, B.J. et al. A comparison of genetic diversity between South African conserved and field chicken populations using microsatellite markers. S. Afr. j. anim. sci. [online]. 2010, vol.40, n.5, pp.462-466. ISSN 2221-4062.. The objective of the study was to determine genetic diversity within South African indigenous chicken populations and the effectiveness of the current conservation flocks in capturing the available diversity in the founder populations. Two chicken populations, Venda (VD_C) and Ovambo (OV_C) conservation flocks (n = 56) from the Animal Production Institute in Irene and two founder population from which these conservation flocks were sampled; Venda (VD_F) and Ovambo (OV_F) field populations (n = 72) were genotyped for 29 autosomal microsatellite markers. All microsatellites typed were found to be polymorphic. A total of 213 alleles were observed for all four populations. The mean number of alleles per population ranged from 3.52 ± 1.09 (VD_C) to 6.62 ± 3.38 (OV_F). Mean ...
It is postulated that chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) became domesticated from wild junglefowls in Southeast Asia nearly 10,000 years ago. Based on 19 individual samples covering various chicken breeds, red junglefowl (G. g. gallus), and green junglefowl (G. varius), we address the origin of domestic chickens, the relative roles of ancestral polymorphisms and introgression, and the effects of artificial selection on the domestic chicken genome. DNA sequences from 30 introns at 25 nuclear loci are determined for both diploid chromosomes from a majority of samples. The phylogenetic analysis shows that the DNA sequences of chickens, red and green junglefowls formed reciprocally monophyletic clusters. The Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation further reveals that domestic chickens diverged from red junglefowl 58,000±16,000 years ago, well before the archeological dating of domestication, and that their common ancestor in turn diverged from green junglefowl 3.6 million years ago. Several shared ...
Chickens are bred all over the world and have significant economic value as one of the major agricultural animals. The growth rate of commercial broiler chickens is several times higher than its Red Jungle fowl (RJF) ancestor. To further improve the meat production of commercial chickens, it is quite important to decipher the genetic mechanism of chicken growth traits. In this study, we found that broiler chickens exhibited lower levels of E3 ubiquitin ligase muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx or Atrogin-1) relative to its RJF ancestor. As a ubiquitin ligase, Atrogin-1 plays a crucial role in muscle development in which its up-regulation often indicates the activation of muscle atrophic pathways. Here, we showed that the Atrogin-1 expression variance partly affects chicken muscle growth rates among different breeds. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the reduced expression of Atrogin-1 in broiler chickens was ascribed to a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), which inhibited the binding of ...
VENTURA, Adriana et al. Histological Description of Morphogenesis of the Gastroesophageal Mucosa of Gallus gallus domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758). Int. J. Morphol. [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.4, pp.1331-1339. ISSN 0717-9502. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-95022013000400030.. The ontogenesis of the gastroesophageal mucosa involves morphological alterations related to its structure and the function of each segment. The present study describes the histogenesis of the mucus-secreting epithelium and glands of the esophagus, gizzard, and proventriculus of the chicken (Gallus gallus), and identifies alterations in the secretion pattern of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). We analyzed 38 chicken embryos, processed the material collected following the histological routine, and then stained it with hematoxylin-eosin for the analysis of tissue structure and with Gomoris trichrome for the identification of conjunctive tissue and collagen fibers. We used the PAS histochemical technique for the analysis of neutral ...
Antibiotic growth promoters that have been historically employed to control pathogens and increase the rate of animal development for human consumption are currently banned in many countries. Probiotics have been proposed as an alternative to control pathogenic bacteria. Traditional culture methods typically used to monitor probiotic effects on pathogens possess significant limitations such as a lack in sensitivity to detect fastidious and non-culturable bacteria, and are both time consuming and costly. Here, we tested next generation pyrosequencing technology as a streamline and economical method to monitor the effects of a probiotic on microbial communities in juvenile poultry (Gallus gallus domesticus) after exposure to several microbiological challenges and litter conditions. Seven days and repeated again at 39 days following hatching, chicks were challenged with either Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis, Campylobacter jejuni, or no bacteria in the presence of, or without a probiotic (i.e.,

Bicephalia is one of the scarcest malformations reported in birds and needs to be fully investigated in chick embryos. Among 1500 fertilised eggs used to examine the primordial germ cells in 2-day and 5.5-day chick embryos Gallus gallus domesticus, bicephalia was found and the condition of the heads, the heart and other parts of the body was fully described. Each twin had its own head; hearts were not completely separated from each other and the rest of the bodies were externally unique. This investigation urges others including poultry farms to share their data on a bigger scale. It may also encourage the monitoring of abnormalities randomly seen during early chick embryogenesis and consideration of environmental factors when poultry farms are faced with high percentages of unsuccessful hatching. The report can shed some light on developmental processes and may also help to clarify why bicephalia is not more common. ...
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 remains an enzootic disease of village chickens in Indonesia, posing ongoing risk at the animal-human interface. Previous modelling showed that the fast natural turnover of chicken populations might undermine herd immunity after vaccination, although actual details of how this effect applies to Indonesias village chicken population have not been determined. We explored the turnover effect in Indonesias scavenging and mixed populations of village chickens using an extended Leslie matrix model parameterized with data collected from village chicken flocks in Java region, Indonesia. Population dynamics were simulated for 208 weeks; the turnover effect was simulated for 16 weeks after vaccination in two best case scenarios, where the whole population (scenario 1), or birds aged over 14 days (scenario 2), were vaccinated. We found that the scavenging and mixed populations have different productive traits. When steady-state dynamics are reached, ...

An adult layer chicken was brought for necropsy examination with the history of sudden death. Upon opening the abdominal cavity, there was a shell-less egg in the abdominal cavity, the oviduct was highly congested and the mucosa of the anterior portion of oviduct was seen prolapsed through a tear in the oviductal wall. Microscopically, the mucosal epithelium revealed severe degenerative to necrotic changes with severe congestion. Based on the gross findings, the case was diagnosed as oviduct rupture with prolapse.
Juvenile chickens of less than 28 days of age at slaughter in the United Kingdom are marketed as poussin. Mature chicken is sold as small, medium or large. Whole mature chickens are marketed in the United States as fryers, broilers, and roasters. Fryers are the smallest size (2.5-4 lbs dressed for sale), and the most common, as chicken reach this size quickly (about 7 weeks). Most dismembered packaged chicken would be sold whole as fryers. Broilers are larger than fryers. They are typically sold whole. Roasters, or roasting hens, are the largest chickens commonly sold (3-5 months and 6-8 lbs) and are typically more expensive. Even larger and older chickens are called stewing chickens but these are no longer usually found commercially. The names reflect the most appropriate cooking method for the surface area to volume ratio. As the size increases, the volume (which determines how much heat must enter the bird for it to be cooked) increases faster than the surface area (which determines how fast ...

Chickens have become increasingly popular around urban and suburban areas as more people have discovered the benefits of having chickens. While their boisterous personalities make them entertaining pets, their ability to provide your family with fresh eggs truly make them an asset. In addition, chickens also benefit your yards and gardens through their droppings, which make for a rich and hardy fertilizer. Requiring chicken nesting boxes along with other coop accessories, chickens also need chicken feeders filled with nutritionally balanced chicken feed. As chickens have innate tendencies to dig and forage for worms, its important to provide them with an enclosed chicken run or pen to allow them to wander about freely. Allowing your chickens to safely and freely roam within a chicken run not only helps to promote their well-being, but it also helps to enhance their ability to lay eggs. Naturally weary of predators, chickens must also feel secure and safe enough to relax in order to lay an egg. ...

Study: Gene mutations transformed jungle fowl to chickens we eat, LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of genetic mutations accumulated over thousands of years have transformed the red jungle fowl of South Asia into the domesticated chickens that are a fixture on farms - and dining tables - worldwide, according to an analysis of poultry DNA published this week in the journal Nature.
A 1-day old chick has the potential to become a broiler chicken, a layer or breeder. Given this versatility, the quality of day old chicks (DOCs) matters immensely to poultry businesses. This article addresses key development stages, focusing on most frequent disturbances in the field and relevant solutions.
The previous literature had suggested that all oil droplets act as light-collecting lenses to increase the delivery of on-axis propagating light into the outer segment, by up to six times in some cases [5-8]. Our modelling suggests that in chickens, only the transparent oil droplet in the violet cone fits with this conclusion, increasing the transmission of light for wavelengths to which the violet cone is sensitive, by a factor of 1.5-2 (figure 4a). In contrast, the pigmented oil droplets reduce light delivery to the outer segment by as much as 20-30% at wavelengths to which the cone is sensitive (figure 4a).. Clearly, there appears a difference here between our results and the literature. However, the difference is due to two main reasons: (i) the reflection of light from the oil droplet-inner segment interface, caused by the abrupt transition in the refractive index that occurs at the boundary of the carotenoid-pigmented droplets (figure 4b), is greater in the chickens owing to the higher ...
The trend in the meat chicken industry is to produce more chicken meat from less feed in less time. The most common chicken breed used in commercial enterprises today, the Cornish Cross, can put on weight twice as fast as domestic chickens could a century ago.. Consumers will recognize this bird by its huge breast and white feathering. Most Cornish Cross industry chickens reach market weight sometime between four and eight weeks, depending on the desired weight for slaughter.. Unfortunately, fast-growing breeds of chicken are associated with a host of issues; both producers and consumers are becoming more concerned.. First, the quickly accumulated weight can overwhelm the young chickens bone structure, causing deformity, pain, and difficulty walking. The Cornish Cross large breasts also make them heavy in the front, complicating their mobility even more.. Other than the physical issues faced by fast-growing breeds, there is also a welfare component to their short lives. To accommodate their ...
Summary Three-month-old and 8-month-old chickens were inoculated subcutaneously with a single, small dose of WE virus calculated to represent that which could be inoculated by a naturally infected mosquito. Each chicken was bled for determination of the viremia and antibody pattern. A similar study was made with SLE virus. The viremia period for WE virus in the majority of adult chickens lasted only 2 days. SLE virus was present in the blood of about half of adult chickens on the 2nd and 3rd days after inoculation and persisted in a few individual birds for longer periods of time. Most of the chickens inoculated with WE virus had HI titers of 1:320 or greater by the 2nd week after inoculation. Although there was some decrease in HI-antibody titers to WE, this antibody persisted at detectable levels for at least 1 year. In these chickens strong neutralization indices developed by the 2nd week, and this type of antibody persisted for at least the 9-week observation period. In adult chickens inoculated

Chickens have a core body temperature between 104 and 107 degrees, she explained. Even if theyre completely bald, they dont need sweaters, and sweaters are actually counterproductive to them being able to regulate their own body temperature.. Mormino blames the way people anthropomorphize their pets. Fido wears a winter coat, why not a sweater for Foghorn Leghorn?. Theyre making ladders and swings for chickens - ridiculous, she added.. Backyard chicken farmers are also making their animals fat, Mormino said. Chickens lay eggs every day, so their dietary needs are very specific. Theres a reason commercial poultry farmers hire PhDs to figure all this out. So use quality commercial chicken feed, Mormino suggests, not some recipe from the Internet.. Chicken keepers are spending exorbitant amounts of money on designer mealworms and organic kale, she said. Theyre over treating their chickens like crazy.. Chickens need about 2/3 cup of chicken feed per day to be maximally productive, ...

Abstract: Background and Objective: Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains causing systemic disease in poultry (avian colibacillosis) are termed avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC). Colibacillosis is a disease of severe economic significance to all poultry producers worldwide and is characterized by a diverse array of lesions. Escherichia coli that cause infections usually possess one or more virulence properties that may help in establishment of the infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the virulence genes in E. coli isolated from broiler chickens. Methodology: A total number of 125 chicken samples from apparently healthy broiler chickens (25 and 15), diseased broiler chickens (25 and 15) and freshly dead ones (25 and 20) were collected in winter (from December, 2014 to February, 2015) and summer (from June, 2015 to August, 2016), respectively from Kafr El-sheikh Governorate. Results: In winter season, E. coli was recovered from 43 broiler chickens with an incidence of 57.3% and the ...

Intensification of the broiler chicken industry started in the late 1950s, when the use of dual purpose chickens for egg and meat production ceased and new poultry strains were produced specifically for meat production. For example, in 1950/51, only 3 million broilers were raised commercially, and now over 400 million are raised and killed in Australia each year. In addition to the breeding program to grow chickens faster (and so cheaper), demand was also growing, and for example Kentucky Fried Chicken opened its first Australian store in 1968, and increased chicken consumption radically. In the early 1970s in just 12 months as 75 Kentucky Fried Chicken stores opened, Australian production of chicken increased 38%. The result of the narrowly focused breeding programs has been a bird which grows twice or three times as fast as a normal chicken and converts its food into meat in a much more efficient way. Most are raised under intensive systems and reach slaughter weight at 5-7 weeks of age. ...
Background:The publication of the first draft chicken sequence assembly became available in 2004 and was updated in 2006. However, this does not constitute a definitive and complete sequence of the chicken genome, since the microchromosomes are notably under-represented. In an effort to develop maps for the microchromosomes absent from the chicken genome assembly, we developed radiation hybrid (RH) and genetic maps with markers isolated from sequence currently assigned to chromosome Unknown (chrUn). The chrUn is composed of sequence contigs not assigned to named chromosomes. To identify and map sequence belonging to the microchromosomes we used a comparative mapping strategy, and we focused on the small linkage group E26C13. Results:In total, 139 markers were analysed with the chickRH6 panel, of which 120 were effectively assigned to the E26C13 linkage group, the remainder mapping elsewhere in the genome. The final RH map is composed of 22 framework markers extending over a 245.6 cR distance. ...
PETA is especially concerned about poultry packing plants, which have received less scrutiny than beef and pork processors though more than 90% of animals killed for food in this country are chickens. The standard method for slaughtering chickens -- at a rate of 11,000 birds an hour -- involves shackling them upside down from a conveyor belt that runs along the ceiling. Their heads are dunked in a shallow stun bath to anesthetize them. A revolving blade then slices their necks. Chicken processors defend their methods as humane, arguing that its a lot less traumatic than the old-fashioned farm-boy method of wringing the birds neck. But activists contend that many chickens are not properly stunned or sliced, and end up boiling to death in the scalding tank meant to loosen their feathers. Ive stood there on the kill floor and seen how they look at you. They try everything in their power to get away. They may not be able to read and write, but they know whats going on, said Virgil Butler, a ...

Minga et al 1989; Bell 1992; El Zubeir 1990; Sonaiya 1990; Musharaf 1990; Yongolo 1996). The one chicken ecotype from Tabora that had severe nervous symptoms, survived the challenge, which is in agreement with the literature that birds showing nervous signs have a tendency to recover (Cole and Hutt 1961; Bell 1992; Yongolo 1996).. The current investigation has shown that chickens of the Kuchi ecotype are resistant to Fowl typhoid, as all five chickens from this group survived the challenge without any visible clinical signs of the disease. The other two chickens (one each from Morogoro-medium and Ching wekwe ecotypes) that also survived the challenge indicate that resistance to Fowl typhoid may be a trait among the free ranging local chicken ecotypes in Tanzania. These results are in agreement with work by Bumstead and Barrow (1993), who reported genetic resistance to Fowl typhoid in lines of White Leghorn chickens. It is likely that the differences observed in this experiment on resistance to ...
You may know it or not, boiled chicken is one of the tastiest yet versatile type of food that you can ever eat. When we say versatile, it means that boiled chicken can be eaten in many ways, in soup or along with green salads or even with mouthwatering sauces. However be careful while eating boiled chicken as you can easily risk adding o a few extra pounds when you eat too much of chicken and not take enough precautions for measuring your calorie intake.. Still if we compare between other chicken recipes, where chicken is fried or cooked with spices, boiled chicken comes with many benefits since it has much lesser calories than spicy and fried chicken recipes, but nevertheless boiled chicken can effectively curb your appetite.. ...

Genetic variability was studied on five Iranian native chicken populations using Random Amplified Polymorphism DNA (RAPD) markers. The purpose of this study was for the analysis of variation within and between Iranian native chicken populations and for the reconstruction of a phylogenetic tree for these populations using the RAPD marker assay. The populations surveyed were from five provinces including Mazandaran (MZD), Isfahan (ISF), Yazd (YZD), Fars (FRS) and West Azerbaijan (WAZ). On the base of results of this study, the FRS and MZD populations had the highest genetic distance (0.182) and the FRS and ISF populations the lowest one (0.066). The YZD and MZD populations had the highest (0.208) and lowest (0.156) within-population genetic diversity. The phylogenetic tree was reconstructed on UPGMA method and showed two main separated groups. The ISF and FRS populations were first clustered into one group and, then, were clustered into a larger group with YZD and WAZ. Another consists MZD ...
Purpose: While White Leghorn chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) have been used to study physiological optical properties of the eye and conditions such as myopia, there is a lack of in vivo studies that look at the potential of chicken as a model of ocular hypertension or glaucoma. When advanced imaging techniques are to be used in such models, chicken have an advantage over rodents, having bigger eyes with less optical aberrations. The induction of elevated IOP in chicken via anterior chamber injections of microbeads has thus been investigated.. Methods: Animals of both genders and varying ages (n=15:12-124 days old) were subject to one of 12 combinations of anterior chamber injections of microbeads: magnetic (4.5 µm) or non-magnetic (12 µm) in one or both eyes with saline as a control. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was monitored frequently before and after injections with Tonopen. In 4 out of the 17 animals A-scan ultrasound was used to measure ocular parameters including anterior chamber depth ...

N2 - In newly hatched chicks, gene expression in the brain has previously been shown to be up-regulated following filial imprinting. By applying cDNA microarrays containing 13,007 expressed sequence tags, we examined the comprehensive gene expression profiling of the intermediate medial mesopallium in the chick cerebrum, which has been shown to play a key role in filial imprinting. We found 52 up-regulated genes and 6 down-regulated genes of at least 2.0-fold changes 3 h after the training of filial imprinting, compared to the gene expression of the dark-reared chick brain. The up-regulated genes are known to be involved in a ...
In this work we have determined molecular signatures of oviduct epithelial and progenitor cells. We have proposed a panel of selected marker genes, which correspond with the phenotype of oviduct cells of a laying hen (Gallus gallus domesticus) and quail (Coturnix japonica). We demonstrated differences in characteristics of those cells, in tissue and in vitro, with respect to different anatomical and functional parts of the oviduct (infundibulum (INF), distal magnum (DM, and proximal magnum (PM)). The following gene expression signatures were studied: (1) oviduct markers (estrogen receptor 1, ovalbumin, and SPINK7 - ovomucoid), (2) epithelial markers (keratin 5, keratin 14, and occludin) and (3) stem-like/progenitor markers (CD44 glycoprotein, LGR5, Musashi-1, and sex determining region Y-box 9, Nanog homebox, OCT4/cPOUV gene encoding transcription factor POU5F3). In chicken, the expression of oviduct markers increased toward the proximal oviduct. Epithelial markers keratin14 and occludin were high in

In the present study, an on-farm test based on voluntary water consumption from an unfamiliar open drinker was validated in a (semi-)commercial setting. To investigate the effect of thirst on water consumption, we subjected 4 flocks of 1,500 broilers to either 0 or 12 h of water deprivation and subsequently measured the amount of water that small subgroups consumed after the deprivation period (first experiment). Broilers that were water deprived before the test drank more than control broilers (P , 0.001). In a second experiment, a similar ...
Random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) technique was applied to detect genetic similarity between seven local chicken strains selected for eggs and meat production in Bangladesh. Conservation and improvement strategies ought to be based on proper genetic characterization in association with phenotypic characterization. White Leghorn, White Rock, Rhode Island Red, and Barred Plymouth Rock fall under recognized strain and Hilly, Deshi and Necked Neck fall under native bird group. Based on four oligonucleotide primers, the genetic similarity between the eggproducing strains (White Leghorn; White Rock; Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock) was between 81.3 to 89.3 %. While the genetic similarity of three native chicken strains selected for meat production (Hilly, Deshi and Necked Neck) was 69.0 to 78.7 % similar based on the RAPD Marker. So, RAPD markers appeared to be effective in detecting similarity between chicken strains and they provide a potential tool for studying the inter-strain genetic

The most common connective tissue research in meat science has been conducted on the properties of intramuscular connective tissue of meat. The purpose of this study was to investigate histological properties of intramuscular connective tissues of left and right Quadriceps femoris muscle and Pectoralis superficialis muscles in the native chickens and the influence of sex on these properties. A total of 40 adult healthy native chickens (56 days) of both sexes (20 female and 20 male) were used. After fixation in 10% buffered formalin sections were prepared, using routine histological techniques. Tissue samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and a variety of special techniques for the determination of types of connective tissue fibers. The conventional histological study revealed that except the endomysium which was similar in both muscles, the other intramuscular connective tissues layers varied between leg and breast muscles and were affected by sex. All the connective tissue fibers ...
We quickly looked up first chicken egg and found your Web site. I will only link to products I know and believe in! Some chickens may start laying eggs as early as 16 to 18 weeks old, while others may take upwards of 28 to 32 weeks (closer to 8 months old)! Check out this article to learn more about providing essential calcium for laying hens. If this happens very early on (under 8 weeks old) it could be a sign that the chicken is a young rooster! Do you have young spring chickens at home? Thats your best bet to get a pullet starting to lay early. Chicken breeds that are developed primarily for high egg production may start laying soon after they reach four months of age. However, it isnt uncommon for young chickens to continue laying eggs right through their first winter! and I dont blame you! In the weeks leading up to the first egg, a young hen will usually start to show more interest in the nesting box area than ever before. So, before your young chickens start laying eggs, they may ...

Genetic Diversity and Relationships of Korean Chicken Breeds Based on 30 Microsatellite Markers Korean Native Chicken;Microsatellite;Genetic Diversity;Genetic Relationship; The effective management of endangered animal genetic resources is one of the most important concerns of modern breeding. Evaluation of genetic diversity and relationship of local breeds is an important factor towards the identification of unique and valuable genetic resources. This study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity and population structure of six Korean native chicken breeds (n = 300), which were compared with three imported breeds in Korea (n = 150). For the analysis of genetic diversity, 30 microsatellite markers from FAO/ISAG recommended diversity panel or previously reported microsatellite markers were used. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 15 per locus, with a mean of 8.13. The average observed heterozygosity within native breeds varied between 0.46 and 0.59. The overall heterozygote deficiency ($F_{IT}$) in
Cathelicidins are essential in the protection against invading pathogens through both their direct antimicrobial activity and their immunomodulatory functions. Although cathelicidins are known to modulate activation by several TLR ligands, little is known about their influence on DNA-induced macrophage activation. In this study, we explored the effects of cathelicidins on DNA-induced activation of chicken macrophages and elucidated the intracellular processes underlying these effects. Our results show that chicken cathelicidin (CATH)-2 strongly enhances DNA-induced activation of both chicken and mammalian macrophages because of enhanced endocytosis of DNA-CATH-2 complexes. After endocytosis, DNA is liberated from the complex because of proteolytic breakdown of CATH-2, after which TLR21 is activated. This leads to increased cytokine expression and NO production. Through the interaction with DNA, CATH-2 can play an important role in modulating the immune response at sites of infection. These ...
BETHESDA, Md., Wed., Dec. 8, 2004 - An international research consortium has found that chickens and humans share more than half of their genes, but that their DNA sequences diverge in ways that may explain some of the important differences between birds and mammals. The consortiums analysis is published in the Dec. 9 issue of the journal Nature.. The International Chicken Genome Sequencing Consortium analyzed the sequence of the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus), which is the progenitor of domestic chickens. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, provided about $13 million in funding for the project, which involved researchers from China, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.. The chicken is the first bird, as well as the first agricultural animal, to have its genome sequenced and analyzed. The first draft of the chicken genome, which was based on 6.6-fold ...
The aims of this study was to find out the histological differences of the mucosa and comparative analysis of Ig-containing plasma cells among the different segments of the gastrointestinal tract of broiler and native chickens of Bangladesh. The conventional histological study revealed that the lining epithelium of the proximal segments (esophagus, crop, and proventriculus) were thicker in the broiler. The esophageal glands were more in the broiler than the native chickens. The villi of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were slender and longer in the broiler in comparison to the native chickens. The number of goblet cells in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum was more in the native chickens than the broiler. The indirect immunohistochemistry revealed that very few immunoglobulin (Ig)-containing plasma cells were present in the epithelium and lamina propria of esophagus, crop, and proventriculus of the broiler and native chickens. The frequency of the population of these cells were abundantly located ...

Sequencing of the chicken genome began in March 2003 with funding from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHRGI), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Researchers led by Richard Wilson of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis assembled the genome of the red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus), an ancestor of domestic chickens. The analysis showed that chickens and humans share about 60 percent of their genes, as opposed to the approximately 88 percent shared by humans and rodents. The chicken is really in an evolutionary sweet spot, said Wilson. Its at just the right evolutionary distance from all the other genomes we already have to provide us with a great deal of fresh insight into the human genome ...

New York Citys chicken farms are growing by the day, and theyre making their mark on the world.. The city is home to some of the nations most renowned breeders of chickens, and with them come the newest, most nutritious chicken mealworms.. While the insects are easy to grow and grow fast, they can be a little hard on the environment.. So if youre planning to feed birds in the city, here are 10 ways to feed them a healthy meal.. 1.. Chicken mealworms can be used in a variety of ways.. Many farmers are turning to the mealworms to provide their chickens with calcium-rich, protein-rich chicken feed.. They also feed them to the chicken to help it absorb nutrients, and some even sell the products at the market.. While these ingredients arent necessarily better, theyre often healthier for the animals.. And because mealworms are so easy to farm, theyre becoming more popular, too.. Weve seen that the popularity of the mealworm has grown in recent years, says Mark E. Kwon, executive director ...

Q: Can I feed raw chicken or cooked chicken to my ferrets as part of their diet? Is chicken meat even healthy?. A: Chicken is the healthiest meat to feed ferrets, as it contains taurine, which is essential to their health. Chicken guts and organs of all kinds should be okay, but double check with your vet first.. But the ONLY (raw) chicken bones that they should eat are the neck bones. Beef, lamb, and poultry bones are good as well! For your ferrets health, steer clear of things with sugar in them and also avoid fruits and vegetables ...
Once onions start to cook, add in one cup of chicken stock to deglaze the pan. Stir the onions and stock and make sure you get all the brown bits off the bottom. BACKGROUND: Studies on transmission of Enterococcus faecalis among chickens during hatch have not been carried out so far. Information about vertical transmission and subsequent spreading and colonization of the cloacal mucosa through cloacal drinking during hatch are important to understand the epidemiology of E. faecalis infections. In the present investigation vertical transmission and subsequent spreading and colonization of the cloacal mucosa of chickens by E. faecalis through cloacal drinking were examined. METHODS: Two different batches of layer chickens originating from 45 weeks old Brown and White Lohmann parents, respectively from the same farm were sampled in the hatcher. Isolates were confirmed to be E. faecalis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and further by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to state their population structure and comparison made to sequence types previously obtained from chicken. RESULTS: A total of 480 chickens were swabbed from the cloacae just after hatch ...
Hanks Saisai. Farming is an activity that primarily focuses on the production of food and fiber inclusive of commodities such as wool and cotton for example. In Namibia, chicken farming is an emerging venture that is on the rise with a focus on producing table eggs and meat to supplement the daily protein needs of many households.. For one to farm successfully with chickens for either egg production (layers) or meat (broilers), it is of great importance to implement a certain production system. By definition, a chicken production system is the way or method in which chickens are kept and raised in order to produce eggs or meat in a specific period.. Chickens can be reared in one of the following production systems; free-range, semi-intensive and intensive. In most rural areas of Namibia, the free-range production system is commonly practiced.. In this system, the farmers responsibility is to buy the chickens and he/she does not have to provide them with shelter. The chickens must find their own ...

The term refers to a kind of grain as well as to the broad range of recipes - a combined dish of broth, vegetables and red meat, chicken or fish - served with that grain. The stew here consists of chicken thighs, frozen artichoke hearts crisped up in the chicken fat, green olives, chicken broth and lemon wedges. Why lemon wedges instead of lemon juice? Because as they bake among the other ingredients, the wedges impart a more lemony flavor to the dish. Return the chicken to the pan, skin side up, add the olives, lemon wedges and chicken broth. While the chicken is baking, prepare the couscous following the instructions on the back of the package, adding the remaining tablespoon oil as instructed.
