RUEDA-PUENTE, Edgar O. et al. Bacterial community of rhizosphere associated to the annual halophyte Salicornia bigelovii (Torr.). Terra Latinoam [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.4, pp.345-353. ISSN 2395-8030.. The specie Salicornia bigelovii (Chenopodiaceae) is a halophyte with promising biological and commercial value as a natural resource from arid zones. However, its productivity depends on the nitrogen supply. Nitrogen fixation by bacteria associated with the roots of S. bigelovii is a determinant source of available nitrogen. However, the diversity in Salicomias rhizosphere is unknown. In order to increase the knowledge of the bacterial diversity associated with the S. bigelovii rhizosphere, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis was performed. This study was conducted in La Paz, BCS, Mexico. A random sample of 25 S. bigelovii plants at the flowering stage was collected from 6 areas along the coastal line of La Paz Bay in the southern portion ...
Chenopodiaceae‐Salicornioideae (14-16 gen./c. 90 spp.) are distributed worldwide in coastal and inland saline habitats. Most of them are easy to recognize by their succulent‐articulated stem with strongly reduced leaves and by flowers aggregated in dense, thick spike‐shaped thyrses. ITS and the atpB‐rbcL spacer were sequenced for 67 species representing 14 genera of Salicornioideae and analysed with maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood, a fossil‐calibrated molecular clock using the penalized likelihood method, and lineage through time plots. The evolution of stem, leaf, and flower morphology was traced using MacClade. Both molecular markers indicate that the monophyletic Salicornioideae originated in Eurasia during the Late Eocene/Early Oligocene (38.2-28.7 Mya) and experienced a rapid radiation into its major lineages during the Early Oligocene with Allenrolfea/Heterostachys, Kalidium, Halopeplis and Halocnemum/Halostachys branching off early. Already in the Middle Miocene ...
The ion content of compartments within cortical cells of mature roots of the halophyte Suaeda maritima grown at 200 mom-3 NaCl has been studied by X-ray microanalysis of freeze-substituted thin sections. Sodium and Cl were found in the vacuoles at about four-times the concentration in the cytoplasm or cell walls, whereas K was more concentrated in the cell walls and cytoplasm than in vacuoles. The vacuolar Na concentration was 12- to 13-times higher than that of K. The Na concentration of cell walls of cortical cells was about 95 mom-3 of analysed volume. The cytoplasmic K concentration within the mature cortical cells was estimated to be 55 mom-3 of analysed volume.. ...

Suaeda salsa L. (S. salsa) is an annual euhalophyte with high salt tolerance and high value as an oil crop, traditional Chinese medicine and vegetable. However, there are few comprehensive studies on the metabolomics of S. salsa under saline conditions. Seedlings of S. salsa were cultured with 0, 200 and 500 mM NaCl for two days. Then, widely targeted metabolites were detected with ultra performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 639 metabolites were annotated. Among these, 253 metabolites were differential metabolites. Salt treatment increased the content of certain metabolites, such as nucleotide and its derivates, organic acids, the content of amino acids, lipids such as α-linolenic acid, and certain antioxidants such as quercetin. These substances may be correlated to osmotic tolerance, increased antioxidant activity, and medical and nutritional value in the species. This study comprehensively analyzed the metabolic response of S. salsa under salinity from the

Anaerobic degradation of wild halophytes (Kalidium caspicum, Salicornia europaea and Climacoptera lanata) from solonchaks ofKyzylkum desert in comparison with conventional glycophyte Panicum coloratum was studied. Lab-scale reactors were fed with dried and milled plant biomass. Tests were operated mder batch and continuous mode at mesophilic (M) and thermophilic (T) temperatures. High concentrations of chlorides, sulphates, sodium and potassium and low contents of nutrients were revealed in the biomass. Batch-tests showed that total methane-yields at M and T conditions were similar. Maximum biogas was produced in result of anaerobic digestion of Kalidium caspicum (about 1000 mL C~ from lL of sludge at T and M-conditions); 950/900 mLIL was obtained in result of digestion of Salicornia europaea at T and M respectively; digestion of Panicum coloratum produced about 900/800 mLIL and Climacoptera lanata - 880/700 mLIL. It was revealed that 72-90% of organic fractions of K.caspicum and 54-90% of ...

Ive been on a tomato kick lately, which is odd considering Im not crazy about tomatoes. Unless theyre in a salsa. A good salsa. Im from Texas so Im rather picky about my salsa and have rather missed it lately so I tried this FODMAP free recipe from fodmapliving.com. I have a couple of photos of the prep process, but forgot to take one after. It was good. I promise. Im making it again this week.. My Modifications & Hidden FODMAP Cautions:. I didnt have any pure chili powder as Ive thus far been able to find one without garlic so skipped that, but the salsa really didnt need it in my mind. I also havent been brave enough to re-add onions to my diet yet so skipped those as well. I couldnt find Cento brand roasted red peppers and bought another brand instead. Just read the label to make sure its just peppers and nothing else (maybe some salt or acid for preservation). The same goes for the banana peppers and tomatoes. I also couldnt find fresh bunched herbs, just the ones in the plastic ...
Time to tango with tangy oranges! this green and orange salsa not only looks good but also tastes good, and is healthy as well. There is a tinge of innovativeness at play too… salsa is usually made with tomatoes and capsicum, but here i have made it with citrus fruits. This unique, light-baked dish serves as a nutritive and tasty snack. For the salsa to taste best, ensure that you select just-ripe fruits which are sweet and tangy. You can make the salsa in advance too and store in the refrigerator.
Born in the South Bronx, New York, Willie Colón has been a leader in the salsa tradition for over 50 years. In an interview, he discussed the music and its background.. A lot of people like to characterize salsa as a pastiche of Cuban son. Theres no denying that there is a Cuban influence and a Cuban base to it, but its so much more.. Salsa is not a rhythm, its a concept. Its a way of making music. Its an open concept and the reason that it became so popular is because it was able to evolve and accept all of these other musics. We put the bombas and plenas in it; we put calypso, samba, bossa, and cumbia in it. Its definitely not even a Puerto Rican or a Cuban music. Its a reconciliation of everything you can find.. I think it could have only happened here in New York, where you had so many different kinds of people living and playing together. We used to get a lot of the black jazz players. They wanted to come and play salsa so they can blow over the changes. Where are you going to ...

This review examines hypotheses addressing structural/functional changes occurring during the evolution of C4 Kranz anatomy from C3 species and the role of photorespiration in these processes. In this review, we examine how the specialized “Kranz†anatomy of C4 photosynthesis evolved from C3 ancestors. Kranz anatomy refers to the wreath-like structural traits that compartmentalize the biochemistry of C4 photosynthesis and enables the concentration of CO2 around Rubisco. A simplified version of Kranz anatomy is also present in the species that utilize C2 photosynthesis, where a photorespiratory glycine shuttle concentrates CO2 into an inner bundle-sheath-like compartment surrounding the vascular tissue. C2 Kranz is considered to be an intermediate stage in the evolutionary development of C4 Kranz, based on the intermediate branching position of C2 species in 14 evolutionary lineages of C4 photosynthesis. In the best-supported model of C4 evolution, Kranz anatomy in C2 species evolved ...

Ive read that spinach doesnt transplant well, and that has been my experience, too. There are only four varieties of orache. This mix consists of 10% coconut husk fiber, 10% peat moss, and 80% organic garden soil. Spinach seeds do best planted 1 inch apart in rows 1 foot apart. Both the stems and leaves are edible and are most palatable when young. Ive grown a lot of different plants. As the weather warms in spring, you can direct-sow a second planting. Spinach seeds sprout more quickly when they receive a preliminary soaking, according to the GrowVeg.com website. Spinach seed will germinate in 5 to 9 days at 70°F (21°C) Germination will take longer if the soil is cooler, about 21 days at 50°F (10°C). Swiss chard and spinach are leafy greens in the amaranth family, grown in many Minnesota gardens. Most of the time these unwanted side effects go away on their particular, but if they are severe or dont go away its best to speak with your doctor. Abstract. Ecosystem respiration contributes greatly to carbon emissions and losses in coastal wetlands. To gain a better understanding of gaseous carbon loss from a coastal wetland covered by seablite (Suaeda salsa Pall.) and to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on ecosystem respiration, a multi-year in-situ experiment was carried out during the growing season of 2012 through part of 2014. By partitioning total carbon dioxide (CO2) flux into soil respiration (Rsoil) and plant respiration (Rp), we found that during mid-summer, ecosystem CO2 respiration rates (Reco) were within the range of 844.5 to 1150.0 mg CO2 m−2 −1, while Reco was as low as 31.7 to 110.8 mg CO2 m−2 h−1 at the beginning and the end of growing seasons. Aboveground S. salsa plant material comprised 79.1 % of total biomass on average, and Rp dominated Reco during inundated periods. It is estimated that 1 gram of soil-emergent S. salsa biomass (dry weight) could produce approximately 1.41 to 1.46 mg CO2 per ...

The tonoplast plays a crucial role in ion compartmentation, which is a central feature of the salt tolerance of halophytes, but we do not know the properties of the membrane that confer this ability. A method was, therefore, developed for the isolation of vacuoles from Suaeda maritima (L.) Dum. of sufficiently high purity to enable biochemical characterization of their lipid and protein composition. Tonoplast fractions produced by density gradient centrifugation, as well as vacuoles isolated by a variety of methods (including DEAE dextran lysis, digitonin lysis, and mechanical shear forces) were unacceptably contaminated. A highly pure vacuole preparation was obtained when protoplasts were lysed by a mild hypotonic shock in alkaline buffer, in the presence of the compatible cytosolute glycine-betaine, followed by shear force during ultracentrifugation; cytoplasmic contamination was prevented by the addition of the zwitterionic detergent 3-([3-cholamidopropyl]dimethylammonio)-l-propanesulphonate ...

The brittlestars Acrocnida brachiata and Amphiura filiformis that occur and characterize these biotopes are shallow burrowers. By extending their fragile arms from the sediment to feed, individuals become vulnerable to damage by abrasion. Brittlestars can resist considerable damage to arms and even the disk without suffering mortality and are capable of arm and even some disk regeneration (Sköld, 1998). Bourgoin & Guillou (1994) observed that the frequency of arm regeneration in population of Acrocnida brachiata in the Bay of Douarenez, France was extensive (nearly 70% of total arm population of the study site). Observations of Acrocnida brachiata populations from the west coast of Ireland, where all individuals exhibited scar or ongoing regeneration of damage. This suggests that this species can withstand high levels of arm damage, and is adapted to rotate the arms for feeding with most damaged arms staying buried in the sediment (Makra & Keegan, 1999). Ramsay et al. (1998) suggested that ...
