The present invention is for crosslinked membranes and in particular for crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide)-cellulose acetate-silsesquioxane (PEO-CA-Si) organic-inorganic hybrid membranes and their use in gas separation. These crosslinked PEO-CA-Si membranes were prepared by in-situ sol-gel co-condensation of crosslinkable PEO-organotrialkoxysilane and CA-organotrialkoxysilane polymers in the presence of acetic acid catalyst during the formation of membranes. The crosslinkable PEO- and CA-organotrialkoxysilane polymers were synthesized via the reaction between the hydroxyl groups on PEO (or on CA) and the isocyanate on organotrialkoxysilane to form urethane linkages under mild conditions. The crosslinked PEO-CA-Si membranes exhibited both increased selectivity of CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 permeability as compared to a CA membrane, suggesting that these membranes are very promising for gas separations such as CO 2 /N 2 separation.

Solution processed organic-inorganic bulk hybrid heterostructures are nowadays considered as the most promising elements to perform efficient optoelectronic functions. In this regard, In2O3 based hybrid heterostructures were fabricated using polypyrrole and their role as efficient interfacial layers was studied using polypyrrole/ZnO nanowires. The In2O3 nanostructures were synthesized through a facile wet chemical approach at an average scale of less than 10 nm in cubic phase. The presence of O and In related defects was studied through emission spectra; these were also found to exhibit their predominance in Raman measurements. The n-type characteristics and donor density value of around 10(20) cm(-3) were evaluated for the In2O3 specimens via Mott-Schottky plots. To identify further AD susceptibility genes, we have screened genes that map to chromosomal regions with high logarithm of the odds scores for AD in full genome scans and are related to cholesterol metabolism. In a European screening sample of 115 sporadic AD patients and 191 healthy control subjects, we analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms in 28 cholesterol-related genes for association with AD. The genes HMGCS2, FDPS, RAFTLIN, ACAD8, NPC2, and ABCG1 were associated with AD at a significance level of P ≤ 0.05 in this sample. Replication trials in five independent European samples detected associations of variants within HMGCS2, FDPS, NPC2, or ABCG1 with AD in some samples (P = 0.05 to P = 0.005). Efficient and selective oxidation of alcohols with NaIO4 catalyzed by an organic-inorganic hybrid material in which manganese(III)5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin chloride, MnIII(TAPP)Cl, is covalently linked to a Lindqvist structure of polyoxometalate, Mo6O192-, at room temperature is reported. The effect of various parameters such as catalyst amount, solvent and oxidant were studied. The catalyst, MnP-POM, showed high activity not only in the oxidation of benzylic and linear alcohols but also in the oxidation of secondary alcohols and their corresponding ketones were obtained in good yields. A good selectivity observed in the case of cinnamyl alcohol and the only alcoholic group is oxidized and no epoxide was obtained. The mechanism(s) of endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization (i.e., EDHF-mediated relaxation) seems to be heterogeneous depending on several factors (e.g., size and vascular bed), surrounding environment (oxidative stress, hypercholesterolemia) and demand (compensatory). We have investigated conditions for chemically modifying the inorganic core of these nanoflowers through substitution of Mg2+ with Mn2+, Co2+ or Zn2+ and have characterised the resulting particles. These have a range of novel nanoarchitectures, retain the enzymatic stability of their magnesium counterparts and the Co2+ and Mn2+ DNA nanoflowers have added magnetic properties. In this study, two outstanding subgroups of organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been investigated. The first part covers the design, synthesis, characterization and application of seven novel Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) containing functionalized biphenyl dicarboxylates as linkers. In the second part, the surface modification of the metal oxides ZrO2, TiO2 and Al2O3 using phosphonate derivates is reported. Firstly three functionalized MOF structures; ZnBrBPDC, ZnNO2BPDC and ZnNH2BPDC were synthesised using 4,4´-biphenyldicarboxylic acid derivatives with different functional groups (-Br, -NO2, -NH2) Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements indicated that the synthesised MOFs posses the interpenetrated IRMOF-9 structure with a cubic topology, which was also confirmed with single crystal X-ray measurements. This study presents the evaluation of seven pharmaceutical compounds belonging to different commonly used therapeutic classes in seawater samples from coastal areas of Gran Canaria Island. The target compounds include atenolol (antihypertensive), acetaminophen (analgesic), norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin (antibiotics), carbamazepine (antiepileptic) and ketoprofen and diclofenac (anti-inflammatory). Solid phase extraction (SPE) was used for the extraction and preconcentration of the samples, and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used for the determination of the compounds. Under optimal conditions, the recoveries obtained were in the range of 78.3% to 98.2%, and the relative standard deviations were less than 11.8%. The detection and quantification limits of the method were in the ranges of 0.1-2.8 and 0.3-9.3 ng·L−1, respectively. The work presented in this thesis describes the influence of the endothelium on smooth muscle cells, and how the structure of the internal elastic lamina (IEL) affects this relationship in mesenteric and saphenous arteries. This was enabled by the study of functional and confocal microscopy dye transfer experiments. Normotensive (WKY) and hypertensive (SHR) rats of 12 weeks and 6 months of age were used to assess the effect of hypertension and ageing on endothelial and smooth muscle cell communication. The endothelium-derived hyperpolarising factor (EDHF) response in mesenteric arteries was investigated using wire myography, and the involvement of myoendothelial gap junctions (MEGJs) was assessed using the putative gap junction inhibitor carbenoxolone. Carbenoxolone attenuated the EDHF response in the WKY, suggestive of the involvement of myoendothelial gap junctions in EDHF. Currently there are several cumbersome methods used in the determination of percent spike recovery in pharmaceutical analyses performed in various laboratories including the FDA laboratories around the world and especially in USA. In this paper we have compared the Quick & Easy Method using Pals formula against the method suggested by ORA Manual. The efficacy of this new formula has been demonstrated by seven examples including the main example of Pilocarpine hydrochloride discussed in detail. This Quick & Easy method is very simple, efficient and convenient way of determining percent spike recoveries and RPD values of duplicate spike solutions in drug analyses by HPLC, GC or UV methods.
