If you have a question about this talk, please contact Alison Quenault.. Complex behaviour in many systems arises from the stochastic interactions of spatially distributed particles or agents. Stochastic reaction-diffusion processes are widely used to model such behaviour in disciplines ranging from biology to the social sciences, yet they are notoriously difficult to simulate and calibrate to observational data. On the other hand, spatio-temporal point processes offer several computational advantages from the statistical perspective, and can be coupled to dynamics via an evolving intensity field. In this talk, I will discuss how joint time marginals of a stochastic reaction-diffusion process can be approximated in a mean-field sense by a spatio-temporal Cox process. The resulting approximation allows us to naturally define an approximate likelihood, which can be optimised with respect to the kinetic parameters of the model. We show on several examples from systems biology and epidemiology that ...

We present the derivation of the continuous-time equations governing the limit dynamics of discrete-time reaction-diffusion processes defined on heterogeneous metapopulations. We show that, when a rigorous time limit is performed, the lack of an epidemic threshold in the spread of infections is not limited to metapopulations with a scale-free architecture, as it has been predicted from dynamical equations in which reaction and diffusion occur sequentially in ...

Gantacurium chloride (formerly recognized as GW280430A and as AV430A) is a new experimental neuromuscular blocking drug or skeletal muscle relaxant in the category of non-depolarizing neuromuscular-blocking drugs, used adjunctively in surgical anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation. Gantacurium is not yet available for widespread clinical use: it is currently undergoing Phase III clinical development. Gantacurium represents the third generation of tetrahydroisoquinolinium (THIQ) neuromuscular blocking drugs in a long lineage of compounds invented by medicinal chemists and scientists at Burroughs Wellcome Co., Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Unlike all other clinically used tetrahydroisoquinolinium agents except cisatracurium, gantacurium is a stereo- and regioselective single isomer. And unlike any other traditional symmetrical predecessors in the family of bisbenzyltetrahydroisoquinolinium ...
This is a multicenter, randomized, controlled, observer-blinded, dose-response study to evaluate the efficacy in tracheal intubation and safety of gantacurium chloride for injection in healthy adult patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia.. Gantacurium chloride for injection (previously referred to as AV430A) is a new, investigational non-depolarizing ultra-short acting neuromuscular blocking agent (NMB). Preliminary results in animals and healthy human subjects (Phase 1 studies in adult volunteers) suggest that gantacurium chloride for injection may provide a useful adjunct to general anesthesia by permitting rapid intubation. This Phase 2 study will provide more definitive information on the ultra-short acting profile of the compound by determining the quality of intubation in patients, at 60 seconds, as assessed by a blinded intubator. In addition, the safety of the compound will be assessed. In this study, the efficacy and safety of gantacurium chloride for injection will also be ...

The computational ability to accurately predict the dynamic behavior of a nuclear reactor core in response to reactivity-induced perturbations is an important subject in reactor physics. Space-time and point kinetics methodologies were developed for the purpose of studying the transient-induced behavior of the High Flux Isotope Reactors (HFIR) compact core. The space-time simulations employed the three-energy-group neutron diffusion equations, and the basic nuclear data required was derived from the NEWT and MCNP neutron transport codes.. The neutron diffusion equations, delayed neutron precursor equations, domain movement expressions, etc. were coded into COMSOL via the coefficient form PDE application mode, the ODE application mode, and algebraic equations. Transients initiated by control cylinder and hydraulic tube rabbit ejections were studied.. ...

Combining design and simulation allows the designer to understand the behavior of complex system and explore design alternatives, and on this basis to propose effective innovative solutions. 1 Economic Incentives Conceptual design designates that part of the design project dealing with the basic elements defining a process: flowsheet, material and energy balances, equipment specification sheets, utility consumption, safety and environmental issues, and finally economic profitability. Therefore, in conceptual design the emphasis is on the behavior of the process as a system rather than only sizing the equipment. In the last two decades, a number of powerful systematic techniques have emerged to support the integrated process design activities. These can be classified roughly as: • heuristics-based methods, • thermodynamic analysis methods, • optimization methods. Note that so-called heuristics does not mean necessarily empirical-based rules. Most heuristics are the results of ...
The brain works on an electrical and chemical process. The chemical process comprises only 2% of the brains activity, leaving 98% as electrical activity. Alpha-Stim treatments are safe and effective therapy to treat anxiety, insomnia, depression, and pain. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) device delivers a natural level of microcurrent, using small clips worn on the earlobes, through the brain to stimulate and modulate specific groups of nerve cells. The microcurrent so gentle and small, just millionths of an ampere, most people dont even feel it.. Alpha-Stim treats patients with microcurrent technology using two protocols: Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) and Microcurrent Electrical Therapy (MET). CES process uses a microcurrent of less than one-half milliampere, delivered directly into the brain with ear clip electrodes for 20 to 60-minute sessions and treats anxiety, insomnia and depression. MET used the Alpha-Stim Smart Probes or self-adhesive AS-Trodes to deliver a ...

Abstract - We report finite-element simulations of gas-liquid two-phase flows through a model porous medium made of corrugated tubes. By resolving the pore-scale fluid dynamics and interfacial morphology, we compute the relative permeability of the porous medium by averaging over a pore-size-distribution of a real porous medium. A constant pressure gradient is applied on both fluids to simulate a pressure-driven creeping flow, and a diffuse-interface model is used to compute the interfacial evolution and the contact line motion. We observe a number of flow regimes in the micropores, depending on the pore size, imposed pressure gradient and other geometric and physical parameters. The flow rates vary nonlinearly with the pressure gradient, and the extended Darcys law does not hold in general. The interaction between the two phases, known as viscous coupling, is a prominent feature of the process. As a result, the relative permeability depends not only on saturation, but also on the capillary ...
The key idea for using nanocrystals for biomedical diagnostics is to benefit from their outstanding physical properties in the visualization of biological events or malignant cells or tissues. This requires a special design of the ligand shell, which preserves the fluorescent, magnetic and plasmonic properties of the particles in the biological environment on one side and allows a specific targeting on the other. The lecture reports on different chemical approaches and describes factors determining the biological response on fully synthetic nanocrystals. We will highlight concepts based on PEGylation and show how small deviations in the ligand shell alter the behavior in biological environment substantially. Moreover, we will present combinatorial approaches for the functionalization of the nanocrystals with biological affinity molecules to improve targeting specificity and concepts to optimize the physical properties of the inorganic core to increase the sensitivity for the respective imaging ...
The body produces them in masses during an infectious disease. They are able to bind to specific surface structures of bacteria and viruses, dock themselves to them and mark the disease trigger for depletion. Antibodies are small wonder weapons that the body uses to protect itself. They also play an important role outside the body. Antibodies are routinely used in biomedical diagnostics and therapy. Producing them, however, is time-consuming and expensive. Potsdam biologists want to simplify the procedure.. Flat culture flasks, Petri dishes, and microplates filled with orange and red liquids are stacked in the culture cabinet of cell biology laboratories. Katja Hanack takes a vial from the incubator and places it under the microscope. Millions of tiny cells are swimming in the nutrient fluid, invisible to the human eye. Only at a 10-20x magnification do the small transparent spheres become visible. They produce the precious cargo the biologist is looking for: antibodies. The immune cells had to ...

The fundamental cellular parameters of cell volume (Vc) and resting membrane potential (Em) profoundly influence cellular, tissue, organ and whole-body physiology. Earlier work has identified a wide range of mechanisms that maintain, regulate, or otherwise influence the values of each parameter individually. However, both Vc and Em change during normal activity in skeletal muscle, and their resting values are interdependent. New quantitative theoretical and experimental techniques were developed to permit an investigation of the interrelationships between Vc and Em, in order to study the determination, maintenance and short-term regulation of each parameter in skeletal muscle. Thus a cellular model was developed that permitted accurate theoretical analysis of the influences upon both Vc and Em of the diverse mechanisms known to maintain and regulate Vc, and a laser-confocal microscope technique was developed for the dynamic measurement of Vc in viable whole-muscle preparations. These new ...

In this paper we present the analogous electrical model for analyzing and determining the precise time dependence of concentrations in general first and zero order chemical reactions. In addition, the applicability of this analogous electrical model for investigating the optical and bio chemical processes is also presented. By constructing the proper analogous electrical circuit experimentally or with the help of special electrical software, the time behavior of the analyzed parameter even for extremely complicated processes can be obtained.

The natural process of ageing is so gradual that it is hardly perceptible. The vast reserves in our body do not let us feel difference of age. In fact the elderly person should normally fell fit and fine, and only under stress of sudden or severe physical effort should there be any difference between him and a younger person. The bodys ability to adapt to ageing is great. But this ability should not be misused; it should be put to judicious and optimal use to enhance health and longevity. In order to do so, we must first understand the changes which occur with age.. REGULATION OF BODY CHEMISTRY. Life consists of series of chemical reactions occurring in each of the millions of cells of which our body is made. Chemical processes constantly regulate the blood chemistry within narrow limits on a moment to moment basis. For example, if a person has eaten too much of sugar and there is danger of inordinate rise of sugar in blood, the pancreas immediately releases more insulin into Circulation; if a ...
Living organisms must continually capture/acquire, store, and use energy to carry out the functions of life. The most important unit operation in a chemical process is generally a chemical reactor. Chemical reactions are either exothermic (release energy) or endothermic (require energy input) and therefore require that energy either be removed or added to the reactor for a constant temperature to be maintained. Exothermic reactions are the most interesting systems to study because of potential safety problems (rapid increases in temperature, sometimes called "ignition" behavior) and the possibility of exotic behavior such as multiple steady-states (for the same value of the input variable there may be several possible values of the output variable). In this module we consider a perfectly mixed, continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR ...
What gives each of us the illusion of being alive is a runaway chemical chain reaction that has been going on for some 3.67 billion years. This is the longest continuous, unbroken chemical reaction of its kind known to modern science, one that has replicated itself to the point where it may soon be forced to jump across the vacuum of space to reach new, untapped troves of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen.. One of the key events in the self-actualization of this chemical process was the invention of the amino acid, which occurred 3,658,752,000 years ago today. (The time of day when it occurred has been lost, partly due to time zones having shifted because continents had not yet been invented.). First of the amino acids was lathioalamate, which has sadly been superseded by other amino acids in all extant earthly lifeforms. And yet lathioalamate was not a dead end, but rather played a key role in the construction of its successors. To be sure, all of those archaic aminos were subtly different from the ...

Enzymes are the important group of globular proteins which acts as a biological catalyst that catalyses biochemical reactions in the living organism.. A typical cell contains about 3000 different kinds of enzymes. Unlike the chemical processes in the laboratory, most of the biochemical reactions in the living systems occur in aqueous solution with PH around 7.00 and at the physiological temperature of 37oC. These reactions are catalysed by enzymes. In the absence of enzymes, such biological process would take place extremely slowly. For instance, hydrolysis of amides or peptides in the laboratory require drastic condition like prolonging heating with an alkali solution, but hydrolysis of proteins (present in food) occurs quite rapidly in the presence of enzymes in the living systems.. One of the most remarkable characteristics of enzymes is specificity. It implies that the catalytic action of enzymes is highly specific. For example, maltose is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of maltose ...
A large number of fundamental chemical processes require the activation or cleavage of strong bonds in small, inert molecules. In the biologically essential process of nitrogen fixation, the enzyme nitrogenase manages to break one of the strongest chemical bonds in nature under mild conditions. In stark contrast, the corresponding industrial process, the Haber-Bosch method, requires extreme temperatures and pressures to perform the same function.
However, in order to be considered for industrial uses, a chemical process needs to work on a concentrated solution that ranges from 10-20 wt percentage. The neuron: At the very lowest level, the sensory processing, movement, and memory functions of complex life on Earth is built on neurons. For our purposes, neurons are cells that can quickly send messages between one another. (All cells send messages to each other in multiple ways, but on a much slower time scale than neurons.) The chemical processes that mediate this operate in millisecond range. Interpretation of high-bandwidth sensory input like humans have requires a lot of computational processing by the brain and each channel of sensory input is processed in parallel. The computational requirements of balancing and moving bodies with as many joints as we have are massive and also done in parallel. Finally, human memory requires a lot of wetware. Thus, to support all these functions, humans have billions of neurons with trillions of connections. Perhaps an alien race possesses neurons that operate either faster or slower than ours do. Perhaps their neurons are somehow more or less ...
Cancer tumors develop, in part, by feeding on sugar in the bloodstream. If you eat lots of sugary snacks loaded with simple carbs, youre loading your bloodstream with the chemical energy needed for cancer cells (and tumors) to proliferate. No biological system can live without fuel for its chemical processes, including cancer cells. Thus, one of the strategies to pursue for any anti-cancer diet is to eat low-glycemic diet. That means no refined sugars... ever! No refined grains (white flour, for example), no heavy use of sweeteners and the lifetime avoidance of sugary soda pop. Aside from starving tumors, eating foods low in sugar and avoiding simple carbs will also keep your weight in check while helping prevent blood sugar disorders such as type-2 diabetes ...
The black oxide finish forms a protective layer for steel parts. In a multistage chemical process, the surface layer of the treated parts is converted into a 1 to 2 micrometer thin mixed ferrous oxide layer that causes the characteristic black appearance. Black oxide finished bearing components feature a set of special technical characteristics, especially in the case of components that move relative to each other. Multiple protective effects can be achieved if only one functional element (typically the rolling elements) is treated. For best effect, however, all functional surfaces of a rolling element bearing, including the inner and outer ring as well as the rolling elements, should be black oxide finished. Black oxide finishing is already an established method in other industries. NKE uses this technology to further improve the technical properties of rolling bearings. The method has proven itself in practice especially with full complement cylindrical roller bearings, but other types of ...
Proteins can also act as catalysts, or enzymes, and speed up some chemical processes. A protein can have a special site on it, called the active site, that something else (called a substrate) fits into. The protein tightens around it, stressed its composition and changes it into something else. (For example, it might remove an electron, break a bond, or otherwise make an alteration to the substrate). There is a tiny on and off switch too, to let the protein known when to stop working. And, proteins can line up in a little chain called a biochemical pathway where the first guy makes what the second guy needs and the second guy makes what the third guy needs and so on until finally whatever the cell needs is manufactured. Its a tiny assembly line! And whats more, you have to have those to get energy and to use the other stuff in your body that you need to live ...

Berkeley Lab and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have announced that the NIH-sponsored National Tritium Labeling Facility (NTLF) will end operations in December after more than 19 years of service to medical and chemical science research.. Berkeley Lab Director Charles V. Shank and NCRR Director of the Division of Biomedical Technology Michael T. Marron made the joint announcement September 14.. In its almost two decades at the Laboratory, the NTLF and its outstanding staff have served the nation well, said Shank. It was an important tool for biological and medical research and provided immense value in our understanding of chemical processes in disease development and suppression.". Marron agreed, noting that the NIH will focus its investments on alternative techniques for detection and imaging at the cellular and molecular levels. "What we learned from the NTLF was invaluable in developing the new techniques, as well ...
metalmark. This is not to say that Im already to give up on the rule of tincture. McKenzie Wark: "Impressionism, for example, was among other things exploring the possibilities of new kinds of industrially produced pigments. Modern chemistry was really changing the substance of our world at the molecular level. One expression of that is the experiments conducted by artists with those materials." Young certainly seems all too well acquainted with the prevalence-cum-virulence of chemical processes, whether we are considering plants consuming minerals as they snake towards life, or the market forces of our cultural technologies: "the metaphorical / fund we would be chemically / composed in" (saccade). Orpiment, one of the eponymous yellows, is a seething arsenic sulphide compound beneath its clear-bright implementation. Gules, the term for the red heraldic tincture, derives from Old French goules (c.f. gullet), and likely has its metaphorical origin in the slit throats of animals: "White ...

Ribonucleic acid. (1) is a molecule present in the cells of all living beings and is essential for the synthesis of proteins . There are different types of RNA, including messenger RNA (mRNA), and transfer RNA (tRNA). mRNA transmits information encoded in DNA, while tRNA uses this information to manufacture proteins. (2) Science: molecular biology) A nucleic acid found in all living cells. Plays a role in transferring information from dNA to the protein-forming system of the cell. (biochemistry) a long linear polymer of nucleotides found in the nucleus but mainly in the cytoplasm of a cell where it is associated with microsomes; it transmits genetic information from dna to the cytoplasm and controls certain chemical processes in the cell; ribonucleic acid is the genetic material of some viruses.A nucleic acid similar to that of dna, thought the deoxyribose acid is replaced with ribose sugar and all thymine bases are replaced with uracil. Rna is a vital component of protein synthesis as it is ...
Chemically cross-linked polymeric particles are formed using mechanical rather than chemical processes, facilitating production of small-diameter particles in a manner largely independent of the viscosity or density of the polymer. For example, an uncross-linked resin may be provided in particulate form, agglomerated, and compressed into a mass of a desired shape with a desired diameter, and subsequently cross-linked.
No way. Life follows the Rules! To maintain an ordered state requires a constant input of energy. Just like keeping a room tidy requires a constant energy input, life requires a constant energy input. Life is an open system - meaning it exchanges energy with its environment (constantly replenishing energy needs). Life could not persist isolated in a closed system (one that doesnt exchange materials with the environment). Death can be considered loosing the battle to entropy and metabolism can be considered the process by which life battles the Second Law - the collective chemical processes by which energy is acquired and utilized. Remember the Morowitz article, Six Million Dollar Man ...
Since the first discoveries on the structure of cells, it has been already known that the basic elements of cells are nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. However, the question of which of them evolved first at the beginning of life, has been a very important problem for the evolutionists. It was apparent that the most essential elements for life were the most complex molecules which had the largest structure, that is, nucleic acids (DNA-RNA) and proteins. The evolutionists had a hard time in explaining how these evolved by themselves. Proteins are the mechanisms which control and organize the most basic functions of the cell. Constructive proteins form the cell, catalytic proteins or enzymes carry out numerous chemical processes in the cell, break up the incoming food, provide energy to the cell, or undertake many important duties including the synthesis of DNA and RNA. These at the same time, they carry out very important tasks during the interaction of cells among themselves ...
Mitochondria are unusual structures that most cells possess. They are organelles, which means they are structures that have explicit functions within the cell, yet they are also relatively autonomous. In the case of mitochondria, they have their own genetic sequences and their division (proliferation) process is independent of the global division process of the cell they inhabit. The cause for this anomaly is probably a by-pass in the evolutionary process, where the separate single cell organisms which exhibited a penchant for energy production have been incorporated into larger organisms in a mutually beneficial symbiosis.. Energy produced by mitochondria is the result of a chemical process involving the oxidation of pyruvic acid, glucose and a co enzyme called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) in a complex sequence of events involving the inner core of the mitochondria, eventually resulting in ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is then transported through the whole cell because it is the ...

BeautySkin is a highly effective procedure for cosmetic reduction of pimples and blackheads. It is based on the positive effect of certain wavelengths of light on human skin. Normal skin is rich in bacterial flora. In a healthy skin pore the unbalanced growth of bacteria such as propioni bacteria, is held in check by oxygen present in the pores internal environment. However, if this pore is blocked, the environment becomes anaerobic (deprived of oxygen) and bacteria can undergo explosive growth. As a result pimples and blackheads form. Irradiation with blue light of a wavelength of 415nm triggers reduction, a chemical process that creates free oxygen returning the aerobic condition, and stopping the bacterias growth. Thus the main cause of the inflammation of the skin pore is removed ...
THOMAS:. Wash. Rock. Aspirate. Repeat.. Six weeks of diligent work had culminated with six delicately miniscule mouse embryos, so transparent that my eyes often lost track of them as they sloshed around in solution. My mentor and I had spent the past month running PCRs, conjuring up gels, and transforming plasmids into bacteria, all in preparation for this final step: the in situ hybridization. The purpose of this complicated sounding process was to insert RNA probes into the embryos, which would allow us to observe the expression pattern of the gene Fgf12 in embryonic heart development (specifically in the atrium). The next four days would be filled with myriads of strange solutions comprised of mysterious, unpronounceable substances. These deceptively clear liquids were capable of performing painstaking chemical processes at the molecular level, something that my mind could hardly fathom. Each step involved washing the embryos with different solutions (which could contain anything from ...
