If you have a question about this talk, please contact Alison Quenault.. Complex behaviour in many systems arises from the stochastic interactions of spatially distributed particles or agents. Stochastic reaction-diffusion processes are widely used to model such behaviour in disciplines ranging from biology to the social sciences, yet they are notoriously difficult to simulate and calibrate to observational data. On the other hand, spatio-temporal point processes offer several computational advantages from the statistical perspective, and can be coupled to dynamics via an evolving intensity field. In this talk, I will discuss how joint time marginals of a stochastic reaction-diffusion process can be approximated in a mean-field sense by a spatio-temporal Cox process. The resulting approximation allows us to naturally define an approximate likelihood, which can be optimised with respect to the kinetic parameters of the model. We show on several examples from systems biology and epidemiology that ...

The chemical process industry, mainly the production of organic and inorganic base chemicals, has a significantly high demand for electrical and thermal energy. This demand is constant in time and quantity due to mostly continuous production. On the contrary, the dependency of electricity supply in Germany on volatile wind and solar power increases. To use this power effectively, we propose the direct utilization of it in the chemical process industry. To analyze the potential of the utilization of renewably generated power in the chemical process industry, the energy supply and demand has to be quantified. Therefore, methods are developed to calculate possible excess energies from the volatile renewable sources wind and sun. Furthermore, through a literature review, important production processes of the German chemical industry are characterized. The developed methods lead to time series of the future power generation by wind turbines and photovoltaic systems with a high temporal resolution. The

Reaction-diffusion processes 1 have been widely used to study dynamical processes in epidemics 2-4 and ecology 5 in networked metapopulations. In the context of epidemics 6 , reaction processes are understood as contagions within each subpopulation (patch), while diffusion represents the mobility of individuals between patches. Recently, the characteristics of human mobility 7 , such as its recurrent nature, have been proven crucial to understand the phase transition to endemic epidemic states 8,9 . Here, by developing a framework able to cope with the elementary epidemic processes, the spatial distribution of populations and the commuting mobility patterns, we discover three different critical regimes of the epidemic incidence as a function of these parameters. Interestingly, we reveal a regime
Inherent fluctuations may play an important role in biochemical and biophysical systems when the system involves some species with low copy numbers. This talk will present the recent work on the stochastic modeling of reaction-diffusion processes in glucose metabolism. The first part of the talk introduces a compartment-based model for a simple glycolytic pathway using a continuous-time Markov jump process, which describes system features at different scales of interest. Then, we will see how the multiscale approximate method reduces the model complexity. We will briefly discuss how the compartment size in the spatial domain can affect the spatial patterns of the system ...
We present the derivation of the continuous-time equations governing the limit dynamics of discrete-time reaction-diffusion processes defined on heterogeneous metapopulations. We show that, when a rigorous time limit is performed, the lack of an epidemic threshold in the spread of infections is not limited to metapopulations with a scale-free architecture, as it has been predicted from dynamical equations in which reaction and diffusion occur sequentially in ...

Gantacurium chloride (formerly recognized as GW280430A and as AV430A) is a new experimental neuromuscular blocking drug or skeletal muscle relaxant in the category of non-depolarizing neuromuscular-blocking drugs, used adjunctively in surgical anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation. Gantacurium is not yet available for widespread clinical use: it is currently undergoing Phase III clinical development. Gantacurium represents the third generation of tetrahydroisoquinolinium (THIQ) neuromuscular blocking drugs in a long lineage of compounds invented by medicinal chemists and scientists at Burroughs Wellcome Co., Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Unlike all other clinically used tetrahydroisoquinolinium agents except cisatracurium, gantacurium is a stereo- and regioselective single isomer. And unlike any other traditional symmetrical predecessors in the family of bisbenzyltetrahydroisoquinolinium ...
This is a multicenter, randomized, controlled, observer-blinded, dose-response study to evaluate the efficacy in tracheal intubation and safety of gantacurium chloride for injection in healthy adult patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia.. Gantacurium chloride for injection (previously referred to as AV430A) is a new, investigational non-depolarizing ultra-short acting neuromuscular blocking agent (NMB). Preliminary results in animals and healthy human subjects (Phase 1 studies in adult volunteers) suggest that gantacurium chloride for injection may provide a useful adjunct to general anesthesia by permitting rapid intubation. This Phase 2 study will provide more definitive information on the ultra-short acting profile of the compound by determining the quality of intubation in patients, at 60 seconds, as assessed by a blinded intubator. In addition, the safety of the compound will be assessed. In this study, the efficacy and safety of gantacurium chloride for injection will also be ...

The computational ability to accurately predict the dynamic behavior of a nuclear reactor core in response to reactivity-induced perturbations is an important subject in reactor physics. Space-time and point kinetics methodologies were developed for the purpose of studying the transient-induced behavior of the High Flux Isotope Reactors (HFIR) compact core. The space-time simulations employed the three-energy-group neutron diffusion equations, and the basic nuclear data required was derived from the NEWT and MCNP neutron transport codes.. The neutron diffusion equations, delayed neutron precursor equations, domain movement expressions, etc. were coded into COMSOL via the coefficient form PDE application mode, the ODE application mode, and algebraic equations. Transients initiated by control cylinder and hydraulic tube rabbit ejections were studied.. ...

The high-throughput system shown above enabled measurement of fine phase contrast tomographic images and its application to fresh samples. This result might be a breakthrough in the application of X-ray phase contrast tomography to quantitative dynamic measurements of samples. In this study a preliminary measurement aiming at high-sensitive and quantitative imaging of a fresh sample accompanying a morphological change was demonstrated.. A ring-shaped fresh pig aorta was used for the measurement. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in which blood flow pumps out from the heart and passes through. It is exposed to blood pressure and constantly subjected to physical loads. Sometimes it suffers from fatal diseases such as aorta dissection. Understanding the morphological changes of the aorta under loaded conditions may be useful in clarifying the mechanism of the disease. However, it is difficult to observe the aorta in vivo with high image contrast using X-ray phase contrast tomography. Instead of ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Sintering mechanism of fine zirconia powders with alumina added by powder mixing and chemical processes. AU - Matsui, Koji. AU - Yamakawa, Takanori. AU - Uehara, Masato. AU - Enomoto, Naoya. AU - Hojo, Junichi. PY - 2008/4/1. Y1 - 2008/4/1. N2 - The present study examined the sintering behavior of fine zirconia powders (containing 2.9 mol% Y2O3) with and without small amounts of Al2O3 added by different ways: powder mixing (PM), homogeneous precipitation (HP), and hydrolysis of alkoxide (HA). The initial sintering behavior was examined by both measurement methods of a constant rate of heating and isothermal shrinkage. In the PM process, Al2O 3 particles pinned the shrinkage of zirconia powder compact at the initial stage and diffuse toward zirconia surface to enhance the sintering. This initial sintering mechanism was explained by the grain-boundary diffusion for the Al2O3-free powder and the volume diffusion for Al 2O3-added powder. When Al2O3 was added to zirconia powder by HP ...

Brinker optimized the structures in Scheme 1, along with the transition states from paths a-c, at B3LYP/6-31G(d). These structures are shown in Figure 1 and their relative energies are listed in Table 1. The Cope rearrangement is favored over the retro-Diels-Alder by 3.6 kcal mol-1. While the subsequent Diels-Alder step (path c) has a low electronic barrier (21.7 kcal mol-1), it is enthalpically disfavored and the free energy barrier is high (40.4 kcal mol-1. Thus, formation of 2 derives mostly from the direct Cope rearrangement of 2. Production of bromobenzene from 2 results from the retro-Diels-Alder (path b) followed by loss of HBr.. Table 1. We investigated the epitaxy and morphology of GaAs/Ge superlattices grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) under a range of conditions. The surfaces of Ge layers deposited on GaAs at 650 degrees C and 100 Torr are observed to be rough in cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. When either the temperature is lowered to 500 degrees C or the pressure is increased to 250 Torr, the surface of the first deposited Ge layer is observed to be smooth. This behavior suggests that Ge roughening is a thermodynamically favorable process that can be kinetically limited with appropriate growth conditions. At 500 degrees C, GaAs islands on Ge do not completely coalesce into one film. This may result from poor surface coverage; the short depositions would not be sufficient to coarsen and completely coalesce the islands. At 650 degrees C, growth on offcut substrates did not suppress antiphase boundaries, likely due to the unique conditions for GaAs/Ge superlattice growth. A wide-range ...
Highly aqueously dispersible (soluble) TiO2 nanoparticles are usually synthesized by a solution-based sol-gel (solvolysis/condensation) process, and no direct precipitation of titania has been reported. This paper proposes a new approach to synthesize stable TiO2 nanoparticles by a non-solvolytic method - direct liquid phase precipitation at room temperature. Ligand-capped TiO2 nanoparticles are more readily solubilized compared to uncapped TiO2 nanoparticles, and these capped materials show distinct optical absorbance/emission behaviors. The influence of ligands, way of reactant feeding, and post-treatment on the shape, size, crystalline structure, and surface chemistry of the TiO2 nanoparticles has been thoroughly investigated by the combined use of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). It is found that all above variables have significant effects on the size, shape, and dispersivity of the final TiO2 nanoparticles. For the
The aqueously altered chondritic parent bodies were initially composed of icy dust containing silicates, and the ices mainly contained H2O, CO, and CO2 with some formaldehyde and ammonia (21). Decay of radioactive nuclides (most likely 26Al) and/or the occurrence of transient events, such as impact shocks (26), could have produced heat that melted the ices contained in the planetesimals to produce liquid water (27). The conditions of the aqueous alteration have been estimated to be 0° to 80°C (pH 6 to 12) for CM2 chondrites, 20° to 150°C (pH 7 to 10) for CI1 chondrites, ~120°C for CM1 chondrites, 50° to 150°C for CR chondrites, 0° to 340°C for CO and CV chondrites, and up to 260°C for ordinary chondrites (15), although these temperatures are rather uncertain. These warm and slightly alkaline conditions are preferable for the formose reaction to occur (28), and further condensation and carbonization produced complex macromolecular organic solids (5, 16). As shown in the present study, ...

Its a naturally occurring sweetener found in fruits and vegetables and other plants and can be naturally produced by the activities of microorganisms or a chemical process. In the microbial process, the action of yeast on the xylose contained in fibrous material such as corn husks and sugarcane bagasse produces xylitol. In a chemical process, its produced by the dehydrogenation of xylose with the help of a catalyst. Purified xylitol is white in colour, dissolves readily in water, looks and tastes exactly like table sugar. Xylitol is absorbed more slowly than sugar into the bloodstream and has less effects on blood sugar and insulin. The glycemic index of xylitol (a measure of how quickly foods raise blood sugar) is only 7, compared to sucrose (table sugar), which is 65. It contains only 2.4 calories per gram (40% fewer calories than the same amount of sugar) and is considered a weight loss friendly sweetener. ...

The redox economy penalty of the routes via toluene is 1/3, while that of those via p-toluic acid is 2.. It is possible to carry out a sensitivity analysis and determine the range of values for each of the criterion weightings for which the order of a given number of the top ranked choices remains unchanged according to their complete ranking score. PROMETHEE calls this stability interval. In this case stability intervals according to the top five choices were calculated. Considering the top five ranks the stability interval with respect to exergetic efficiency is 0.2254-0.3142 and with respect to the E-factor is 0.1138-0.1681. For the solvent score the stability interval lies between 0 and 1 and that for the number of records between 0.2808 and 0.4109 while that of the oxidation length spans from 0 to 1. The results are thus independent of the solvent score and the oxidation length. This was to be expected in this case as all but the worst three choices have the same score and thus the ...

Titanium products are used for military, aerospace, recreation, chemical processes, and metal finishing purposes. Titanium sports equipment is longer lasting and more durable. The military and aerospace utilize titanium parts for higher functioning equipment that requires little maintenance. Chemical processes use titanium tools since chemicals cannot react with the metal.. While there are many industries where titanium is useful, medicine especially needs the natural properties of titanium. Its durability, longevity, non-corrosion, and biological compatibility make it perfect for many uses in the medicine field. More research on the uses of titanium products will only increase its availability and its cost effectiveness for doctors and patients alike.. Titanium is a spectacular metal. Corrosive resistant, it is lighter than steel but heavier than aluminum. However, it is stronger than both of those metals and more. It will save users money in the long run due to the minimal care and maintenance ...

In the announcement of its Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, Toyota declared its commitment to creating a future in which people, cars, and nature coexist in harmony. In this declaration, Toyota committed to reducing CO2 emissions not only during operation but also over the entire life cycle of vehicles, and to using resources effectively based on a 4 Rs approach (refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle). Although eco cars decrease CO2 emissions during operation, most of them increase CO2 emissions during manufacturing. For example, the rare-earths (Nd, Dy etc.) used in the magnets of driving motors are extracted through processes that produce a significant amount of CO2 emissions. The common process for recycling the rare-earths used in magnets can recover high-purity rare-earths by ...

Statistical Process Control (SPC) provides a way to monitor chemical and other processes. Well focus on continuous chemical processes and how the process and quality control departments utilize SPC. Process control engineers use SPC to monitor a processs stability, consistency and overall performance. Quality control engineers use SPC to see if the process is functioning within quality standards. In industry, these two departments work together to monitor a chemical process. SPC, in a classical sense, will not reveal much about the quality of the product. For example, a process may be operating very well and in a very stable manner...as far as the process engineer is concerned, everything is fine. However, if the process is currently 20% below the quality standard for A or top grade material, it would be difficult to say that the process is fine.. {parse block=google_articles} To help introduce the basics of SPC, well assume that the variable being monitored is the specific gravity (SG) of ...

The frozen cells cannot be disturbed by any radiation or chemical process and it also protects the DNA, so the spores can continue to reproduce.. According to the researchers models, a combination of heat and moisture defrosts the water inside the cell, returning it to a liquid form. Without this protective barrier, the spore is more easily destroyed.. The computer models also allowed the researchers to determine the exact temperature and water balance needed to destroy the bacteria: between 90-95 degrees Celcius with a water concentration above 30 percent.. These insights could be used to prevent microbial contamination on food processing equipment and limit the spread of disease in the event of a biological attack. And because the process relies on moist-heat rather than chemical processes, the bacteria shouldnt be able to develop resistance.. The paper, entitled Gel phase in hydrated calcium dipicolinate, appeared in Applied Physics Letters. The research was supported by the Defense ...

Data were extracted from 89 laboratory studies and made available, including 20 studies on relevant pathogens used in combination with surrogate data to determine minimum target concentration × time factors. Stainless steel (68%) and chlorine-based disinfectants (56%) were most commonly tested. No consistent trend was seen in the influence of chlorine concentration and exposure time on disinfection efficacy. Disinfectant application mode; soil load; and surface type were frequently identified as influential factors in included studies ...

Current approaches in bone regeneration combine osteoconductive scaffolds with bioactive cytokines like BMP or VEGF. The idea of our in-vitro trial was to apply VEGF165 in gradient concentrations to an equine collagen carrier and to study pharmacological and morphological characteristics of the complex in a circulation model. Release kinetics of VEGF165 complexed in different quantities in a collagen matrix were determined in a circulation model by quantifying protein concentration with ELISA over a period of 5 days. The structural changes of the collagen matrix were assessed with light microscopy, native scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as with immuno-gold-labelling technique in scanning and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We established a biological half-life for VEGF165 of 90 minutes. In a half-logarithmic presentation the VEGF165 release showed a linear declining gradient; the release kinetics were not depending on VEGF165 concentrations. After 12 hours VEGF release reached a
Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive approach for monitoring a clients O2 saturation.. In its most usual (transmissive) application mode, a sensing unit is put on a thin part of the patients body, normally a fingertip or earlobe, or in the case of an infant, around a foot. Light of 2 wavelengths is travelled through the client to a photodetector. The changing absorbance at each of the wavelengths is measured, allowing resolution of the absorbances because of the pulsing arterial blood alone, excluding venous blood, skin, bone, muscle, fat deposits, and (in most cases) nail gloss.. Reflectance pulse oximetry might be made use of as an alternative to transmissive pulse oximetery explained above. This technique does not require a thin part of the persons physical body and is therefore well suited to more global application such as the feet, forehead and chest, but it likewise has some limits. Vasodilation and pooling of venous blood in the head as a result of compromised venous go back to the heart, ...
Microwave sensing and monitoring is very attractive for biological applications because of their sensitivity to water and dielectric contrast. Direct detection of biological structures in microwave frequencies and understanding of the molecular mechanisms of microwave effects is considered as a problem of a great importance. Nowadays, however, microwave technique for localized testing biological objects is at a rudimentary level. In contrast, optical biosensing has benefited from in a large variety of specialized tools. The proposed chiral field microwave biosensors will open an entirely new field of microwave biomedical diagnostics and pathogen detection.. ...

N2 - New water-soluble rhodium(III) complexes with a tacn (1,4,7- triazacyclononane) and a bpy (2,2′-bipyridine) supporting ligands were synthesized. The reaction of [RhIII(tacn)Cl3] (1) with equimolar amount of bpy and two equivalents of AgNO3 in H2O at reflux for 10 h gave a water-soluble chloro complex [Rh III(tacn)(bpy)Cl](NO3)2 {2(NO3) 2}. Complex 2(NO3)2 was treated with equimolar amount of AgNO3 in H2O at reflux for 10 h to give a water-soluble nitrato complex [RhIII(tacn)(bpy)(NO 3)](NO3)2 {3(NO3)2}. Water-solubility of 3 with NO3- ligand (46.5 mg/mL) is high compared with that of 2 with Cl- ligand (14.5 mg/mL) under the same conditions (at pH 7.0 at 25°C). The structures of 2 and 3 were unequivocally determined ...
Eskers research is aimed at understanding the properties of magnetic nanoparticles, or MNPs, at surfaces and interfaces and providing insights into using MNPs for biomedical diagnostics and the treatment of diseases. In particular, this research focuses on studying the interaction of MNPs with biological soaps, or lipids, which include triglycerides, cholesterol, and phospholipids, the principal components of cell membranes.. The ultimate goal of the research is to harness MNPs for hyperthermia, or the use of heat to alter the physiological state of cells. One example of this would be to trap drugs inside MNPs and use a magnetic field to deliver them to the exact site of the diseased cells. An alternating magnetic field could then be used to generate heat with the MNPs to melt the stabilizing polymer coating and release the drug to the specific site, thereby avoiding damage to healthy tissue. This work has applications in the treatment of diseases such as cancer and blindness resulting from ...

This paper describes a technique for determining the dynamic aerodynamic yaw moment derivative based on the time response data using an oscillating model rig. The aerodynamic yaw moment derivatives are initially estimated using oscillation frequency and amplitude decay. The results from the dynamic measurement are compared with conventional static test and presented in the form of aerodynamic magnification. The yaw moment derivative exceeds that determined statically across reduced frequency range measured. The yaw damping derivative was found to be a function of freestream speed; at low velocities it is negative but progressively increases to a positive value. With further increases in speed, a self-sustained oscillation is observed with almost constant frequency and amplitude. This result is attributed to coupling between the model wake and the model stability; however, the exact behavior of the interaction is not fully understood; this phenomenon is under further investigation.. ...

The cellular genome is continuously exposed to various sources of DNA damage. Cells respond to DNA damage using extensive surveillance and repair mechanisms mediated largely by protein kinases and phosphatases. In multi-cellular organisms, the accumulation of DNA damaged cells is avoided either through the activation of cell cycle checkpoints allowing for DNA repair or through the elimination of damaged cells by apoptosis. To date, the study of the signaling mechanisms that govern the DNA damage response have focused on delineating the molecules involved in specific DNA damage response pathways. However, to develop a comprehensive understanding of how the cell responds to DNA damage, dynamic measurements of signals within each specific pathway and across pathways, encompassing the entire relevant signal transduction network, is necessary. In this work we will focus on gaining insight into the relationship between the molecular signaling and cellular response to a therapeutically relevant DNA ...
