Little is known about the long-term fate of red mud constituents in fresh waters or of the processes regulating recovery of fresh waters following pollution control. In 1983, red mud leachate was diverted away from Kinghorn Loch, UK, after many years of polluting this shallow and monomictic lake. We hypothesised that the redox-sensitive constituents of red mud leachate, phosphorus (P), arsenic (As) and vanadium (V), would persist in the Kinghorn Loch for many years following pollution control as a result of cycling between the lake bed sediment and the overlying water column. The objective of this study was to determine the biodegradation of dispersant surfactants in cold seawater, relevant for deep sea or Arctic conditions. In this study we compared the efficiency of different amendments, notably red mud (a bauxite residue), natural zeolite and lime, to immobilize the heavy metals present in a polluted acidic soil [Pb (3266 mg kg− 1 d.m.), Cd (35.4 mg kg− 1 d.m.) and Zn (1495 mg kg− 1 d.m.)] and to influence several microbiological properties. The addition of all the amendments decreased significantly (P , 0.05) the solubility of Pb, Cd and Zn and the increase of soil pH was identified as a common mechanism of action for both red mud and lime. Despite reducing the heavy metal solubility, the addition of zeolite and lime did not affect the number of culturable fast-growing heterotrophic bacteria whereas the red mud caused a significant increase (P , 0.05) of this soil microbial component. The nose of the common fruit fly could soon be used to detect drugs and explosives thanks to new research that has revealed the flys impressive ability to sniff out a range of hazardous chemicals. In a study published today, 15 October, in IOP Publishings journal Bioinspiration and Biomimetics, an international team of researchers has shown that the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) can not only detect the familiar smell of rotting fruit, but also a whole host of chemicals associated with explosives, combustion products and illicit drugs. It is hoped that the sensors on the antennae of the fruit fly could be integrated into future electronic noses (e-noses), making the devices much faster and more sensitive to a whole host of chemicals.
We worked in the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology (CBCB) at Newcastle University for the entire project, where there are clearly defined safety rules and regulations that all laboratory workers must follow. One of our advisors, Dr Wendy Smith, guided us through the safety procedures along with some of the basic techniques during the first introductory week, before any laboratory work on the project began. This included carrying out the following risk assessments to determine what control measures would be required. (i)Chemical Hazards: At the beginning of the project written risk assessments were already available in the host laboratories for all procedures that involved potentially hazardous chemicals. These risk assessments were reviewed and the recommended control measures were strictly followed throughout. No additional chemical hazards specific to this project were identified.
