Little is known about the long-term fate of red mud constituents in fresh waters or of the processes regulating recovery of fresh waters following pollution control. In 1983, red mud leachate was diverted away from Kinghorn Loch, UK, after many years of polluting this shallow and monomictic lake. We hypothesised that the redox-sensitive constituents of red mud leachate, phosphorus (P), arsenic (As) and vanadium (V), would persist in the Kinghorn Loch for many years following pollution control as a result of cycling between the lake bed sediment and the overlying water column. While biodegradation of chemically dispersed oil has been well documented, only a few studies have focused on the degradation of the dispersant compounds themselves. The objective of this study was to determine the biodegradation of dispersant surfactants in cold seawater, relevant for deep sea or Arctic conditions. Biotransformation of the surfactants dioctyl-sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS), Tween 80, Tween 85, and α/β-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (EHSS, expected DOSS hydrolysis product) in the commercial dispersants Corexit 9500, Dasic Slickgone NS and Finasol OSR52 were determined. The biotransformation studies of the surfactants were performed in natural seawater at 5 °C over a period of 54 days without oil present. In this study we compared the efficiency of different amendments, notably red mud (a bauxite residue), natural zeolite and lime, to immobilize the heavy metals present in a polluted acidic soil [Pb (3266 mg kg− 1 d.m.), Cd (35.4 mg kg− 1 d.m.) and Zn (1495 mg kg− 1 d.m.)] and to influence several microbiological properties. The addition of all the amendments decreased significantly (P , 0.05) the solubility of Pb, Cd and Zn and the increase of soil pH was identified as a common mechanism of action for both red mud and lime. Despite reducing the heavy metal solubility, the addition of zeolite and lime did not affect the number of culturable fast-growing heterotrophic bacteria whereas the red mud caused a significant increase (P , 0.05) of this soil microbial component. Almost every sphere of human activity in an industrialized society faces potential chemical hazards of some form. It is estimated that nearly 100,000 chemicals are in use in large amounts every day. A further 500-1000 are added every year. Only a small fraction of these chemicals have been evaluated for toxic effects like carcinogenicity. The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) contributes to this enterprise by conducting standardized chemical bioassays---exposure of rodents (mice and rats) to a range of chemicals--- to help identify substances that may have carcinogenic effects on humans. However, obtaining empirical evidence from such bioassays is expensive and usually too slow to cope with the number of chemicals that can result in adverse effects on human exposure. Today there was an incident with the Airlander aircraft at Cardington airfield. The aircraft was not flying at the time of the incident. Our initial assessment is that the aircraft broke free from its mooring mast for reasons that will be investigated. The aircraft has a safety system which operates automatically in circumstances of the aircraft breaking free of its mast, and is designed to rip open the hull and deflate the aircraft. This is a safety feature to ensure our aircraft minimises any potential damage to its surroundings in these circumstances. The aircraft is now deflated and secure on the edge of the airfield. The fuel and helium inside the Airlander have been made safe.. A member of HAV staff sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for assessment as a precaution. She has since been discharged. Does the environment have a causal effect on economic development? Using meteorological data, we reconstruct every countrys exposure to the universe of tropical cyclones during 1950-2008. We exploit random within-country year-to-year variation in cyclone strikes to identify the causal effect of environmental disasters on long-run growth. We compare each countrys growth rate to itself in the years immediately before and after exposure, accounting for the distribution of cyclones in preceding years. The data reject hypotheses that disasters stimulate growth or that short-run losses disappear following migrations or transfers of wealth. Instead, we find robust evidence that national incomes decline, relative to their pre-disaster trend, and do not recover within twenty years. Both rich and poor countries exhibit this response, with losses magnified in countries with less historical cyclone experience. As part of a project on environmental disasters (5), this study aimed to evaluate ethnic differences in genes involved in susceptibility to environmental agents. We described NAT2 genotypes, predicted haplotypes, and deduced phenotypes in a Central Asian (Kyrgyz) and a European (Romanian) study population. During the last decade, a high degree of variability in NAT2 alleles has been found at 15 nucleotide positions and documented in the NAT database. The SNP500Cancer Project verified 9 nucleotide positions of these 15 and an additional SNP in the 3′ flanking region. A first decision has therefore to be made on the selection of sequence variants in studies of genetic susceptibility (10). We selected all NAT2 sequence variants which were verified as polymorphic by the SNP500Cancer Project for genotyping with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Human security is fundamentally concerned with helping people to deal with unforeseeable threats and sudden downturns, whether international financial crises, environmental disasters or incapacitating illnesses. In this paper I argue that NGOs, as one of the most visible sets of actors in the related fields of human development and human rights, can play a significant role in helping to achieve human security. NGOs are especially well suited to action for human security because of their size and reach, closeness to local populations, willingness to confront the status quo, and ability to address transnational threats through coalition-building. While NGOs face many obstacles in reorienting their activities explicitly towards human security, including the cyclical nature of the aid monies on which many of them depend and the high costs of networking, I argue that the human security framework will nonetheless attract many NGOs to its approach.
