Figure 3 - Phenogram of overall molecular similarity of RAPD bands among specimens from all localities at Tibagi, Paraná, and Iguaçu Rivers. Codes as in Figure 1. DISCUSSION The RAPD-PCR patterns indicate strong genetic differentiation within and among populations in the Paraná and the Tibagi Rivers. In the Paraná River at Porto Rico, the high levels of allelic polymorphism may represent the pristine composition of different species or populations within the H. malabaricus species complex, or they may be the outcome of faunal mixing caused by the closing of the Itaipu Dam in 1978 and the consequent flooding of Sete Quedas, another Oligocenic geographic barrier (Sampaio, 1988). Sete Quedas was the natural boundary for the Upper and Middle Paraná basins. The presence of an outlier in the Paraná River similar to the Iguaçu population suggests that the Paraná may indeed be a recipient of trahiras of diverse origins. The Londrina sample from the Tibagi River is most similar to the populations ...
The FIS values for each subpopulation tested by the formulae of Li (1955) were significantly different from zero (P , 0.05) at the EST-1*, EST-2* and PGM-2* loci from the Paraná river subpopulation, exactly the loci in which bands had low definition. The FIT values for EST-1* and EST-2* were significantly different from zero (P , 0.05) using the method of Brown (1970). None of the FST values tested by the procedures of Workman and Niswander (1970) were significantly different from zero (P , 0.05). DISCUSSION The levels of genetic variability and polymorphism reported in this study for the curimba can be considered high when compared to the mean values obtained by Nevo (1978) for 51 teleost species (H = 0.051 and P = 0.152) or the mean heterozygosity values calculated by Powell (1975) and Ward et al. (1992) for marine and freshwater fishes (0.058 and 0.051, respectively). High levels of heterozygosity and polymorphism might be expected for species of fish occurring over a broad range of ...

Triploidy in tambaqui Colossoma macropomum identified by chromosomes of fish larvae is an article from Journal of Aquaculture & Marine Biology for MedCrave Group. Triploid fish are excellent models for use in commercial scale because they can show higher rates of growth, carcass yield and meat quality. If sterile, tambaqui (Colosso mamacropomum) triploids can be used to avoid the problems related to early puberty, especially the negative impacts of male sexual maturation on harvest weight. In the present study, we evaluated the triploidy induction efficiency (thermal shocks) in the fish tambaqui Colossoma macropomum, the most important Neotropical species used for aquaculture. To verify the result of the triploidy experiments, we used a protocol of ploidy identification through analysis of mitotic chromosomes of early life stages (larvae cytogenetics). We obtained better results of hatching and triploid rates through temperature shock at 41°C for 2 min (heat shock) than cold shock. In conclusion,

Cytogenetic analyses were performed in Cyphocharax modestus, collected at Paranapanema River and Tietê River (São Paulo State, Brazil). A karyotype with 2n = 54 chromosomes was observed in the animals from both Brazilian freshwater river systems. One to four B chromosomes were also detected in individuals from the Paranapanema River, which represents the probable first report of more than a single supernumerary element in a species of the Curimatidae group. C-banding revealed centromeric and telomeric heterochromatin blocks in several chromosomes of the normal karyotype complement of C. modestus. Moreover, while some B chromosomes were characterized by the complete absence of C-bands, others were totally heterochromatic. Although there was a prevalence of B chromosomes in males of C. modestus, at least one supernumerary element was found in males and/or females of several other populations of the species, which suggests that the presence of these chromosomes seems to represent a general trait ...

The anomalures, including Z. insignis, are unique among rodents in having a set of scales on the ventral surface of the base of the tail.[5] These scales reportedly provide traction when climbing trees.[2][3] Z. insignis is the only anomalure that lacks patagia (membranes that span between the forelimbs and hindlimbs).[2][3] Anomalures that possess patagia are able to glide between trees. Thus, Z. insignis is unable to glide. The divergence of the Z. insignis lineage from other extant anomalures apparently occurred before the evolution of anomalure gliding.[5] Gliding is a relatively rare adaptation that has independently evolved in three lineages of extant placental mammals (anomalures, colugos, and flying squirrels).[12] Z. insignis has ashy-grey pelage and bushy black tail hair.[3][5] Tufts of short, course, and spikey hairs are located on the lateral ankles.[3][5] The hands and feet have four and five digits respectively.[3][5] Pedal digit I (the first toe) is somewhat divergent.[5] Z. ...
With this new technique, it is possible to obtain new information thanks to the project carried out by four UNal-Medellín graduate students directed by School of Biosciences Professor Edna Judith Márquez Fernández. To amplify DNA regions, the researchers developed specific sequences known as primers which help observe population genetic variations of fish of the medium and low basins of the Cauca River, between the municipality of Tarazá and the outpour of this river into the Magdalena River. The method accurately analyzes the genetic diversity of 13 migratory species: jetudo or pataló (Ichthyoelephas longirostris), ray-finned fish (Prochilodus magdalenae), vizcaína (Curimata mivartii), dolphin catfish (Ageneiosus pardalis), trans-Andean shovelnose catfish (Sorubim cuspicaudus), chango or mueluda (Cynopotamus magdalenae); capaz (Pimelodus grosskopfii), arenca (Triportheus magdalenae), sabaleta (Brycon henni), four-lined pimodella (Pimelodus blochii), stripped catfish (Pseudoplatystoma ...

Hypothesizing that the Amazonian water system differences would affect the expression of muscle growth-related genes in juvenile tambaqui |i|Colossoma macropomum|/i| (Cuvier 1818), this study aimed to analyze the morphometric data and expression of myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs) in the white and red muscle from tambaqui obtained from clear and black Amazonian water systems. All of the MRF transcript levels (|i|myod|/i|, |i|myf5|/i|, |i|myogenin|/i|, and |i|mrf4|/i|) were significantly lower in the red muscle from black water fish in comparison to clear water fish. However, in white muscle, only the |i|myod|/i| transcript level was significantly decreased in the black water tambaqui. The changes in MRFs gene expression in muscle fibers of tambaqui from black water system provide relevant information about the environmental influence as that of water systems on gene expression of muscle growth related genes in the |i|C. macropomum|/i|. Our results showed that the physical and chemical water

Small-scale regional polities emerged on Marajo Island seasonally flooded savannas at circa AD 500. Those populations built several systems of interconnected earthworks that included dams, mounds, fishponds, and causeways over an area of roughly 20,000 sq meters. The construction and maintenance of such monumental architecture was designed to produce a steady supply of protein that ultimately furthered demographic increase, and the development of complex sociopolitical systems. Economic wealth was based on the cooperation for building and maintaining the fish farming systems that, although controlled by certain lineages, did not lead to economic social inequality. Rulers and shamans symbolically controlled subsistence supplies by mediating the contact with the supernatural forces. Archaeological excavations of mound groups have revealed one of the most intriguing art styles in the Americas, characterized, among other things, by the conspicuous depiction of mythical snakes over a myriad of ...

Species may differ with depth and sediment type but it was not possible to identify to species level using video data available.
The Piranha Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV or unmanned surface vehicle) is a watercraft developed by Zyvex Marine (a division of Zyvex Technologies, formerly Zyvex Performance Materials) in 2010. The boat is 54 in length and weighs just 8,000 lbs. The Piranha is the first USV to utilize a lightweight carbon-nanotube enhanced composite material called Arovex, which allows the watercraft to weigh significantly less than any other USV. The weight advantage from Arovex gives the Piranha a payload capacity of 15,000 lbs and a range of over 2,500 miles. Additionally, the carbon-nanotubes actually provide a strength increase of 20-50% over traditional materials. With those characteristics, the Piranha is expected to be sold as a possible tool for anti-piracy, search and rescue, submarine hunting, and harbor patrol. The first Piranha began construction in February 2010 with an anticipated completion date of summer 2010. The Piranha underwent sea trials near Seattles Puget Sound during the months of ...
Nitrogen metabolism in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), a neotropical model teleost: hypoxia, temperature, exercise, feeding, fasting, and high environmental ammonia.. PubMed. Wood, Chris M; de Souza Netto, José Gadelha; Wilson, Jonathan M; Duarte, Rafael M; Val, Adalberto Luis. 2017-01-01. The total rate of N-waste excretion (M N) in juvenile tambaqui living in ion-poor Amazonian water comprised 85 % ammonia-N (M Amm-N) and 15 % urea-N (M Urea-N). Both occurred mainly across the gills with only ~5 % of M Amm-N and ~39 % of M Urea-N via the urine. Tambaqui were not especially tolerant to high environmental ammonia (HEA), despite their great resistance to other environmental factors. Nevertheless, they were able to maintain a continued elevation of M Amm-N during and after 48-h exposure to 2.5 mmol L(-1) HEA. The normally negative transepithelial potential (-18 mV) increased to -9 mV during the HEA period, which would help to reduce branchial NH4(+) entry. During 3 h of acute environmental ...
Contents of this page belong to www.fishlookup.com The diamond tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a small freshwater fish of the characin family (family Characidae) of order Characiformes. It is found in and around Lake Valencia in Venezuela, South America. This species exhibits clear sexual dimorphism, with males having much longer dorsal fins than the females. Males also tend to be more brightly coloured, but both sexes are attractive fish and have become popular with aquarists. The dorsal and anal fins are purple and the body is silver. The eye is marked with red above the pupil, and there is a dark band running along the midline of the body. Their common name comes from the bright, iridescent scales along the flanks. Maintenance in aquaria is simple as similar to that of other tetras, although they will not do as well in hard, alkaline water as they do in soft, slightly acidic water filtered through peat (Riehl & Baensch, 1996).. ...

For the past two decades, WKU biologist Steve Huskey has studied the feeding habits of various species of fish from sharks and goliath groupers to bass and bluegill.. Now hes revisiting another research subject - piranha. And he plans to conduct bite force tests on redbelly, redeye and piraya piranhas in his lab in the Complex for Engineering and Biological Sciences.. When it comes to mastery of fish jaws in terms of biting, it just doesnt get any better than piranhas, said Dr. Huskey, associate professor in WKUs Department of Biology.. However, he noted, piranhas arent the blood-thirsty creatures depicted in movies.. Its such an enigmatic creature, Dr. Huskey said. You say the word piranha and even my 6-year-old knows what they are. The vast majority of people fear them, unrightly so, but they do. Theres just not much known about them. From what we can tell, theyve even got very sophisticated hearing capabilities, but its also something were not that knowledgeable about.. Some of ...

The structural characterization of the olfactory epithelium in Pygocentrus nattereri Kner, 1858 was studied with the help of light as well as scanning and transmission electron microscope. The oval shaped olfactory rosette consisted of 26-28 primary lamellae radiated from midline raphe. The olfactory epithelium of each lamella was well distributed by sensory and non-sensory epithelium. The sensory epithelium contained morphologically distinct ciliated and microvillous receptor cells, supporting cells and basal cells. The non-sensory epithelium was made up of labyrinth cells, mucous cells and stratified epithelial cells. According to TEM investigation elongated rod emerging out from dendrite end of the receptor cells in the free space. The dendrite process of microvillous receptor cells contained microvilli. The supporting cells had lobular nucleus with clearly seen electron dense nucleolus. The apex of the ciliated non-sensory cells was broad and provided with plenty of kinocilia. Basal cells ...

It differs from D. aequipinnatus by the combination of having more branched dorsal- fin rays (11½±12½ vs. 9½±10½, exceptionally 11½), more circumpeduncular scales (14, vs. 12, rarely 14); slightly deeper body (body depth 29.9±33.2 vs. 26.7±30.8% SL), and shorter upper jaw (upper jaw length 8.3±9.3 vs. 9.2±12.0% (SL). It is distinguished further from striped species of Devario in southern and south-western India, D. fraseri, D. malabaricus, D. mysoricus, and D. neilgherriensis by having infraorbital process vs. absent (Ref. 116720). ...
Gracyn is getting quite the personality! Today I picked her up after work and she ran to the door calling for mama. The other day she pointed her finger at Mommy and said NO! She now signs the word PLEASE. And.... Today grandma asked her if she wanted toast for breakfast, and she said Yesh (yes)! :-)......and I cant forget to document that she now has 12 teeth! One thing that we have noticed .....this cold weather does not agree with her sensitive skin! Poor thing is continually fighting a rash on her face. It will be interesting to see if we see the same trend next year when the weather turns cold again. Another thing Mommy noticed lately is that Gracyn tends to cross her eyes when looking at some objects up close. If this doesnt correct itself over time, I see an eye doctor visit in her near future. :-(. Sorry I passed down my poor eye genes to you....please forgive me ...
I have had my Pacu fish ( the ones related to the Pirana) for about a month and a half now, at first they huddled at 1 side of the tank and I figured that was because of the move and stress, they are still huddling around the same side of the tank. there is plenty of room for them, I do not understand.
