The composition of the diet, the metabolic adaptations and variations in the activity of the fish are the main factors responsible for seasonal changes in physiological variables. It is known that aerobic exercise can improve the fish growth due to: the enhancement of feed conversion, reduced dominance, increased protein synthesis and lipid and glucose catabolism. The diet must satisfy the nutritional requirements of each species. Knowledge of the appropriate protein level is critical because maximizes feed conversion efficiency, lowers costs and reduces the load of nutrients released to the aquatic ecosystem. In Brazil, the pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, is an important fish in aquaculture, especially for hardiness, fast growth, excellent meat quality. This species may respond to exercise with lower levels of protein catabolism and for directing them to growth. Thus, a balanced diet and a well established aerobic exercise protocol could promote better growth for pacu. This study aimed to ...
Ultrastructural analyses of fish-infecting myxosporean Henneguya piaractus that is found in the gill lamellae of the freshwater teleost Piaractus mesopotamicus (Characidae) and collected from the Paraguai River, Brazil were described. The parasite occurs within large whitish spherical to ellipsoidal polysporic cysts (up to 2.5 mm long) delimited by a layer of fibroblasts generally connected with some capillaries on the gill epithelium. No external morphological signs of disease were visible in the infected fishes. The tailed spores measured 61.5 ± 0.91 (60.2-62.6) μm in total length and ellipsoidal spore body 21.1 ± 0.62 (20.6-21.9) μm long, 6.7 ± 0.40 (6.2-7.3) μm wide and 2.5 ± 0.54 (2.0-3.1) μm thick. The spore wall was about 97 nm of thickness and consisted of a thin electron-dense exospore and a thick electron-lucent endospore with about 85 nm of thickness. The tailed spores were composed of two equal-sized shell valves adhering together along the straight suture line each having in ...
The freshwater fish louse Dolops carvalhoi is an ectoparasite of pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus capable of causing substantial damage to its hosts. The aim of this study was to investigate some aspects of the host-parasite interaction between these two species. For this purpose the physiological and morphological responses and the participation of the non-adaptive immune system of pacu to the experimental infestation with D. carvalhoi were analyzed. Three different experimental protocols were designed in order to find out the effects of the parasites on their hosts, the host responses that may interfere with parasite establishment and the influence of chronic exposure of hosts with juvenile D. carvalhoi to a second acute stressor of confinement. The results showed that even low level of adult parasite infestation is capable to induce a stress response in the hosts. No changes were observed regarding the plasma osmoregulatory parameters, while an increased number of gill chloride cells and ...

Discussion. Astyanax is a highly diverse and taxonomically complex genus and its taxonomy and relationships seems to be far from a reasonable understanding. The diagnostic combination of characters proposed by Eigenmann (1921, 1927) to distinguish Astyanax from other genera of the Characidae is very variable and presents great overlap. These problems are more evident distinguishing Astyanax from Hemigrammus Gill, Bryconamericus Eigenmann, Moenkhausia Eigenmann, and Hyphessobrycon Durbin. As a practical example, according to Eigenmann (1921, 1927) Astyanax is distinguished from Bryconamericus mainly by the presence of five inner premaxillary teeth (vs. four teeth) and reduced size of the third infraorbital bone, which is not in contact with the preopercle (vs. expanded third infraorbital in contact with preopercle). Nevertheless, these characters are not exclusive from Astyanax and are widely distributed and variable among characid genera.. Malabarba & Weitzman (2003) hypothesized a monophyletc ...

N2 - Accurate species delimitation is crucial for studies of phylogeny, phylogeography, ecology, conservation and biogeography. The limits of species and genera in the Characidae family are controversial due to its uncertain phylogenetic relationships, high level of morphological homoplasy and the use of ambiguous morphological characters for descriptions. Here we establish species boundaries for Bryconamericus, Hemibrycon, Knodus and Eretmobrycon (Stevardiinae: Characidae), previously diagnosed with morphology, using three different barcoding approaches (GMYC, PTP, ABGD). Results revealed that species delimitation was successful by the use of a ...

Contents of this page belong to www.fishlookup.com The diamond tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a small freshwater fish of the characin family (family Characidae) of order Characiformes. It is found in and around Lake Valencia in Venezuela, South America. This species exhibits clear sexual dimorphism, with males having much longer dorsal fins than the females. Males also tend to be more brightly coloured, but both sexes are attractive fish and have become popular with aquarists. The dorsal and anal fins are purple and the body is silver. The eye is marked with red above the pupil, and there is a dark band running along the midline of the body. Their common name comes from the bright, iridescent scales along the flanks. Maintenance in aquaria is simple as similar to that of other tetras, although they will not do as well in hard, alkaline water as they do in soft, slightly acidic water filtered through peat (Riehl & Baensch, 1996).. ...
SummaryWeight gain, length, and survival of Pacu (Piaractus brachypomus) larvae were analyzed after they were fed one of four diets. At 36 hours post-hatching larvae were fed for the first time and during three consecutive days: Artemia salinanauplii (T1), wild plankton filtered to 200 microns (T2),concentrated powder with 48% crude protein (T3) or no diet (fasting, T4). Animals were kept at a density of 70 larvae per liter. Statistically significant differences were observed with respect to the final weight for T1, T2, T3, and T4 (2.2 ± 0.3a, 1.7 ± 0.3b, 1.5 ± 0.3bc, 1.5 ± 0.2c mg, respectively) , final length (6.37 ± 0.29a, 0.20b ± 6.16, 5.95 ± 0.27c, 0.26c ± 5.87 mm, respectively), weight gain (0.77 ±0.39a, 0.31b ± 0.34, 0.16 ± 0.37bc, 0.08 ± 0.21 c mg, respectively) and length gain (0.39 ± 0.17A, 0.18± 0.15b, 0.16c ± -0023, -0102 ± 0.15c mm, respectively). The T1 diet had the best results for optimal growth, followed by T2. The survival rate was not statistically different ...
The Piranha Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV or unmanned surface vehicle) is a watercraft developed by Zyvex Marine (a division of Zyvex Technologies, formerly Zyvex Performance Materials) in 2010. The boat is 54 in length and weighs just 8,000 lbs. The Piranha is the first USV to utilize a lightweight carbon-nanotube enhanced composite material called Arovex, which allows the watercraft to weigh significantly less than any other USV. The weight advantage from Arovex gives the Piranha a payload capacity of 15,000 lbs and a range of over 2,500 miles. Additionally, the carbon-nanotubes actually provide a strength increase of 20-50% over traditional materials. With those characteristics, the Piranha is expected to be sold as a possible tool for anti-piracy, search and rescue, submarine hunting, and harbor patrol. The first Piranha began construction in February 2010 with an anticipated completion date of summer 2010. The Piranha underwent sea trials near Seattles Puget Sound during the months of ...
Nitrogen metabolism in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), a neotropical model teleost: hypoxia, temperature, exercise, feeding, fasting, and high environmental ammonia.. PubMed. Wood, Chris M; de Souza Netto, José Gadelha; Wilson, Jonathan M; Duarte, Rafael M; Val, Adalberto Luis. 2017-01-01. The total rate of N-waste excretion (M N) in juvenile tambaqui living in ion-poor Amazonian water comprised 85 % ammonia-N (M Amm-N) and 15 % urea-N (M Urea-N). Both occurred mainly across the gills with only ~5 % of M Amm-N and ~39 % of M Urea-N via the urine. Tambaqui were not especially tolerant to high environmental ammonia (HEA), despite their great resistance to other environmental factors. Nevertheless, they were able to maintain a continued elevation of M Amm-N during and after 48-h exposure to 2.5 mmol L(-1) HEA. The normally negative transepithelial potential (-18 mV) increased to -9 mV during the HEA period, which would help to reduce branchial NH4(+) entry. During 3 h of acute environmental ...
The ecotoxicology of nano-TiO2 has been extensively studied in recent years; however, few toxicological investigations have considered the photocatalytic properties of the substance, which can increase its toxicity to aquatic biota. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects on fish exposed to different nano-TiO2 concentrations and illumination conditions. The interaction of these variables was investigated by observing the survival of the organisms, together with biomarkers of biochemical and genetic alterations. Fish (Piaractus mesopotamicus) were exposed for 96 h to 0, I, 10, and 100 mg/L of nano-TiO2, under visible light, and visible light with ultraviolet (UV) light (22.47 J/cm(2)/h). The following biomarkers of oxidative stress were monitored in the liver: concentrations of lipid hydroperoxide and carbonylated protein, and specific activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase. Other biomarkers of physiological function were also studied: the specific ...
For the past two decades, WKU biologist Steve Huskey has studied the feeding habits of various species of fish from sharks and goliath groupers to bass and bluegill.. Now hes revisiting another research subject - piranha. And he plans to conduct bite force tests on redbelly, redeye and piraya piranhas in his lab in the Complex for Engineering and Biological Sciences.. When it comes to mastery of fish jaws in terms of biting, it just doesnt get any better than piranhas, said Dr. Huskey, associate professor in WKUs Department of Biology.. However, he noted, piranhas arent the blood-thirsty creatures depicted in movies.. Its such an enigmatic creature, Dr. Huskey said. You say the word piranha and even my 6-year-old knows what they are. The vast majority of people fear them, unrightly so, but they do. Theres just not much known about them. From what we can tell, theyve even got very sophisticated hearing capabilities, but its also something were not that knowledgeable about.. Some of ...
The eyeless cavefish Astyanas mexicanus is a special system in which we can look at evolution in action, says article co-author William Jeffery, a senior adjunct scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Mass., and a professor at the University of Maryland. The Science study was led by Nicolas Rohner and Clifford J. Tabin at Harvard Medical Schools Department of Genetics.. Using the cavefish, the team demonstrated for the first time in nature how standing or cryptic genetic variations in an animal, which have been inherited from prior generations without causing any physical changes in the animal, can be unmasked by the shock of entering a new environment. Gene variants that improve the animals ability to adapt to that new environment can then be selected for, and passed on to its progeny. This is distinct from the established evolutionary mechanism of de novo genetic mutations that arise by chance after the animal has entered the new environment, which also ...

This study describes the hematological alterations in Astyanax altiparanae associated with infestation with Lernaea cyprinacea. The study was carried out in a lagoon of the Mogi-Guaçu River, in the municipality of Pirassununga, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Of 46 fish examined, 45.6% had their integument infested by L. cyprinacea, with a mean intensity of 4.9 parasites per fish and a mean abundance of 2.2, giving a total of 139 recovered crustaceans. The abundance of L. cyprinacea correlated positively with the length and weight of the hosts, and the intensity of infestation was higher in female hosts ...

Of course, if Dr. Wieland had bothered to read the actual article (rather than merely the press reports that creationists are so fond of) he would have found that Astayanax mexicanus evolved from eyed, surface-dwelling forms which only reached the area in the mid-Pleistocene, that is, between 600,000 to 1 million years ago. How does Borowsky know this? This is where references matter. Earlier research by Ulrike Strecker and colleagues, published in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution (subscription required) showed that mutations occur in freshwater fish at a rate of 1.5% per million years. By analyzing the differences in cytochrome b genes between currently living species and then dating the nearest common ancestor of each in the fossil record, Strecher et al. proposed that Astyanax first arrived in the Yucatan no earlier than 900,000 years ago, just as Borowsky states. How can Wieland be so certain that it would not take long at all for such mutations to occur? Not presenting any evidence ...

Theres no denying that James Cameron is a talented man in this industry and he has made a few of the greatest innovations in recent years (notably further exploring the Titanic and the current 3D technology.) Though his script writing talents are questionable and aspects of his directing are suspect Cameron seems to have an uncanny ability to pull great work from his actors, but his biggest talent may not be as a director. Cameron is likely one of the greatest cinematographers thats not working as one. With all due respect to the cinematographers whove worked with him (though there are numerous rumors that speak to Cameron being extremely difficult to work with) his films all have a stunning beauty that remains constant though his director of photography may not. Piranha Part 2: The Spawning may not be a grand sprawling epic that Cameron will become known for but inklings of that talent are evident to the keen observer. His work with underwater scenes are surprisingly good (hes an avid and ...

Heres how I look at it: if an animal lives in an environment in which change is infrequent and today can be expected to be a repeat of yesterday, then it makes sense for its way of life to evolve into a set of structured, repeated patterns triggered by familiar environmental stimuli. It saves a lot of energy, since there is no need to develop the neural complexity required to deal with change; energy is also saved in the day-to-day activities of life because theres less information processing to be done, and less physical hesitation and vacillation also. And in fact, most animal behaviour is of precisely this kind. Animals are mostly automatons ...

The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, is a unique model system consisting of cave-adapted and surface-dwelling morphotypes which diverged ,1My ago. This remarkable natural experiment has enabled powerful genetic analyses of cave adaptation. Here, we describe the application of next-generation sequencing technology to the creation of a high-density linkage map. Our map comprises over 2200 markers populating 25 linkage groups constructed from genotypic data generated from a single genotyping-by-sequencing project. We leveraged emergent genomic and transcriptomic resources to anchor hundreds of anonymous Astyanax markers to the genome of the zebrafish (Danio rerio), the most closely related model organism to our study species. This facilitated the identification of 784 distinct connections between our linkage map and the Danio rerio genome, highlighting several regions of conserved genomic architecture between the two species despite ~150My of divergence. Using a Mendelian cave-associated trait as ...
There were significant within-treatment differences (ANOVA) for both cyclophosphamide (F = 8.38; P £ 0.05) and vinblastine sulfate (F = 8.54; P £ 0.05), and also when compared with their respective control group. The Student-Newman-Keuls test indicated that the cyclophosphamide doses of 4 and 32 mg/kg body weight did not alter the frequency of MN compared to the control, whereas the other doses (8 and 16 mg/kg body weight) significantly increased the frequency of MN. The frequencies of MN for cyclophosphamide concentrations of 8 and 32 mg/kg body weight were similar and did not differ significantly to the values observed with the dose of 4 mg/kg body weight. Likewise, the responses to 8 and 16 mg/kg body weight were also similar. There were no significant differences in the frequency of MN among the different doses of vinblastine sulfate used. However, the MN frequencies with all of the doses were significantly higher than in the control group. DISCUSSION Cytogenetic methods are probably the ...

The fish species Astyanax mexicanus exists in a form that exists above ground and has normal eyes and in forms that exist in caves (cavefish), which are blind and undergo degeneration of the eye. In evolutionary terms, the loss of the eye might simply reflect lack of selection for eyesight in cavefish. However, Yamamoto et al. present evidence that, instead, eye degeneration appears to have been derived as an adaptive trait driven by natural selection. Critical signals for eye development come from the cells of the anterior embryonic midline in the form of so-called hedgehog (Hh) proteins. In cavefish, eye primordia form but stop developing and degenerate. This phenotype appears to arise not from failure of Hh signaling, but rather from increased expression of Hh proteins in the developing cavefish embryo. Increased Hh signaling in wild-type embryos (induced by injection of mRNA encoding Hh proteins) produced adults that lacked an eye. Application of a pharmacological inhibitor of Hh signaling ...
Astyanax mexicanus is a species of fish in which the evolution of cave-dwelling strains from surface-dwelling stains has involved the loss of eyes as an adaptation to the dark environment in caves. Given the known ability of HSP90 to buffer morphological variation in various model species, Rohner et al. investigated whether this also occurred for eye morphology in A. mexicanus by treating embryos of sighted, surface-dwelling strains with the HSP90 inhibitor radicicol. This resulted in a wider variability in both eye and eye socket sizes in the resulting adult population, which implies that HSP90-buffered cryptic variation can contribute to variation in eye morphology when such buffering is overcome. By contrast, the same treatments in cave-adapted strains resulted in a reduction in the size of the empty eye sockets without a change to the variability in their sizes. This is consistent with a role for cryptic variation in the evolution of the eyeless trait, through which the subset of small-eye ...

Evolution maintains that as more time passes, living things evolve to acquire better and more useful traits. As such, shouldnt the loss of a useful trait, such as eyesight, be regarded as the opposite of evolution? Not so, say recent news reports on blind fish.. Biologists compared DNA sequences from 11 populations of cavefish (Astyanax mexicanus), which are a blind variation of the Mexican tetra fish, to 10 related fish populations that have the ability to see. Since they can interbreed, they are the same species.1. A New York University news release attributed the fishes loss of sight to convergent evolution, which makes little sense if evolution, as neo-Darwinists describe it, is supposed to generate new features and functions.. The blind fish do not trace their lineage to just one blind ancestor. In fact, the study authors wrote in BMC Evolutionary Biology, The results also demonstrate that cave populations in the region studied arose at least five times independently and derive from ...
Concrete foundations in the campground and picnic areas of the park are remnants of a transient work camp built there in 1934 by the State. The camp provided work and lodging for men displaced during the Depression years. In addition to building trails, logging, and completing public service projects, these men helped fight a fire in 1935 that burned more than 10,000 acres in the area. Later the men set up a sawmill and began to salvage fire-damaged wood.. In 1957, a 940-acre parcel of forest along the Brule River was set aside as Brule River State Park. The park became Judge C. R. Magney State Park in 1963 when the Minnesota legislature selected this park as a memorial to the late Judge Magney, a lawyer, mayor of Duluth, justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and a strong advocate of Minnesota State Parks, especially those along the North Shore. With his influence, he was instrumental in establishing 11 state parks and waysides along Lake Superior. Over the years, parcels of land have been ...
Abstract Aside from Madtsoiidae, anilioids, and Boidae that were studied previously, the middle Palaeocene of ltaborai (BraziI) has produced Ungaliophiinae (tropidophiids), booid-grade snakes incertae sedis, and a possible Russellophiidae (Caenophidia) that are described in the present article. This article is the third and final report on the snakes from the locality. The Ungaliophiinae (Paraungaliophis pricei gen. et sp. nov.) are rare whereas the booid-grade snakes incertae sedis (ltaboraiophis depressus gen. et sp. nov., Paulacoutophis perplexus gen. et sp. nov.) are more frequent. A single vertebra is referred to the Russellophiidae (Caenophidia) with reservation. An update of the whole fauna of snakes from ltaborai is provided. Hechtophis austrinus that was tentatively referred to the erycine Boidae is now regarded as a Boidae incertae sedis. Most snakes from Itaborai are known only from the locality. Astonishingly, only the ailioids Coniophis cf. C. precedens gives possible evidence of ...

Balbina Reservoir in Brazil has large numbers of black piranha, the largest piranha species. Find out from Jeremy Wade what you need to hook these.
The popular image of red-bellied piranhas portrays them as more feared than fearful. However, the results of our investigation are consistent with an anti-predator function for shoaling in the species. We found that opercular rate, which typically increases under risk (Metcalfe et al. 1987; Barreto et al. 2003), and may be indicative of a fishs preparedness to flee (Hawkins et al. 2004), was lower in larger groups, even in the absence of an overt predation threat. Furthermore, after a simulated attack, opercular rate remained elevated for longer in the smaller shoals. Because the size of red-bellied piranha shoals at Mamirauá ranges from fewer than 10 to about 100 (H. Queiroz and A. E. Magurran, personal observation), the grouping advantages detected in this experiment are applicable to fishes in the wild. Our study not only casts new light on the behaviour of a charismatic, though poorly researched species, but also reveals how a fishs perception of risk is affected by shoal size.. In the ...

A Hobbs State Park volunteer in October, 2002, was weed eating a path down a Highway 12 E ditch, across the road from the parking lot in Van Winkle Hollow (before trails were built under a tunnel). Wooah! His face almost smashed into a cluster of green and brown spiny burs on a low hanging tree limb. Ducking his head and almost dropping the buzzing tool reflexively, he got a flash of joy! Thats a chinkypin bur! He blurted out in excitement, I havent seen one of them in over 50 years! his brain reminded him. You were only 10 years old when you first and last found them south of Bentonville and east of Evening Star School, near what, at that time, was Cave Springs gravel road.. After shutting off the weeder and putting it down, Al Knox, age 67, and retired from public schools, started carefully fondling several of those sticky brown burs with small acorn-like nuts peeking out, and realized a rare treasure had just been found! So he picked a couple and hurried to the park office to show ...
