The present invention provides a method for improving the recovery of cesium-131 (Cs-131) from barium (Ba) carbonate. Uses of the Cs-131 purified by the method include cancer research and treatment, such as for the use in brachytherapy. Cesium-131 is particularly useful in the treatment of faster growing tumors.

Contaminants Released, Chernobyl. "A retrospective view of the Chernobyl accident of Apr 26, 1986 assesses the total radiation release at about 100 megaCuries or 4 x 1018 becquerels, including some 2.5 MCi of cesium-137. The cesium is the most serious release in terms of long term consequences. The total release was around 4% of the total accumulated activity of the core and compares to a release of 15 Ci at Three Mile Island. The release was then about 7 million times that at TMI. Anspaugh, et al. suggest that essentially all the noble gases and about half of the volatile elements (iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137) were released. The cesium release from all of the atmospheric weapons tests is estimated to be about 30 MCi. The noble gas releases were estimated by Levi to be 45 MCi of xenon-133 and 5 MCi of krypton-85. About 3-5% of the core inventory of the relatively refractory elements such a strontium, plutonium, and ruthenium were released, much more than from a light water reactor ...

Radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl accident affected parts of central Norway to a considerable extent, in particular the 134Cs+137Cs deposition had a significant impact on the natural environment. When this became apparent, a comprehensive radioecological research programme was initiated in order to study the behaviour of radiocaesium in boreal and alpine ecosystems, with emphasis on food-chains leading to exposure of species used for human consumption, i.e., reindeer and freshwater fish. In this paper results from the terrestrial part of this research programme during the period 1986-1990 are presented. The work was mainly confined to the mountain areas of Dovre and Rondane. Parallel studies were performed in eutrophic and strongly oligotrophic communities. The influence of local variations in topography and microclimate on the observed radiocaesium levels in topsoils, lichens and vascular plants was studied in detail. Currently a significant re-distribution of radiocaesium from the ...

In an unprecedented food monitoring advertising campaign for radionuclides, japan government took action to secure food safety following the Fukushima nuclear incident (Mar. decreased quickly then, once again in Sept 2011 but peaked, which was mainly because of boar meat (a known accumulator of radiocesium). Tap water was less contaminated; any restrictions for tap water were canceled by April 1, 2011. Pre-Fukushima 137Cs and 90Sr levels (resulting from atmospheric nuclear explosions) in meals had been typically less than 0.5 Bq/kg, whereby meat was typically higher in 137Cs and vegetarian generate was usually higher in 90Sr. The relationship of history radiostrontium and radiocesium indicated which the regulatory assumption following the Fukushima incident of a optimum activity of 90Sr getting 10% from the particular 137Cs concentrations may shortly be in danger, as the 90Sr/137Cs proportion increases as time passes. This should be studied into consideration for the existing Japanese meals ...
RE: CBS, a complicated ownership arrangement. KPIX may still be owned by Westinghouse, builder of nuke plants). This might explain the Fuku-denialism & denial of radiation in West Coast waters of the U.S. Controlling interest now held by one individual. Fr. Wikipedia:. In 1994, Westinghouse signed a long-term affiliation deal to affiliate all five of its Group W TV stations with CBS.[113][114] Of the other four stations, two of the stations (KPIX in San Francisco and KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh) had been decades-long affiliates of the network, while KYW-TV in Philadelphia and WBZ-TV in Boston were NBC affiliates. The network decided to sell off existing O&O WCAU, which would eventually be purchased by NBC, despite at the time being much higher rated locally than KYW-TV. While WJZ-TV and WBZ-TV switched to CBS in January 1995, the swap was delayed in Philadelphia when CBS discovered that an outright sale of channel 10 would have forced it to pay massive taxes on the proceeds from the deal. To solve ...
Description: Crystalline silicotitanate (CST) is an ion-exchange method for removing radioactive cesium from tank waste to allow the separation of the waste into high- and low-level fractions. The CST, originally developed Sandia National Laboratories personnel in association with Union Oil Products Corporation, has both a high affinity and selectivity for sorbing cesium-137 from highly alkaline or acidic solutions. For several years now, the U.S. Department of Energy has funded work to investigate applying CST to large-scale removal of cesium-137 from radioactive tank wastes. In January 1997, an expert panel sponsored by the Tanks Focus Area met to review the current state of the technology and to determine whether it was ready for routine use. The review also sought to identify any technical issues that must be resolved or additional CST development that must occur before full implementation by end-users. The CST Gate Review Group concluded that sufficient work has been done to close ...
Watch the Video. In 1998, a company co-founded by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) retiree Lane Bray, an internationally recognized expert in medical isotopes, came to PNNL for technical assistance. The company, IsoRay Medical, Inc., now produces Cesium-131 radiochemical brachytherapy seeds used in facilities across the country to treat prostate and other cancers. The Cesium-131 seed offers a significantly shorter half-life than the two other isotopes commonly used for brachytherapy, allowing faster delivery of therapeutic radiation to the prostate gland, reduced incidence of common brachytherapy side effects, and lower probability of cancer cell survival. IsoRay literally started in Lane Brays basement, with about three employees, said Larry Greenwood, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) technical lead for the IsoRay project. In 1998, Bray, a PNNL retiree and internationally recognized expert in medical isotopes and Don Segna, a retired engineer, formerly with the ...

Several critical decisions had to be made to reach this day. Some were simple. For instance, Helix 6.2 will not support Classic at all. Helix 6.1 marks the end of Classic Helix. Its really a no-brainer. If your Helix application requires you to use a Classic Engine, RADE or Client, Helix 6.1.9 is the tool for you. It will let you run in macOS, but it will still allow you to use Classic on those machines in your workgroup that must do so.. Other decisions were not as simple. The decision to make Helix AppleScriptable was such a decision. We knew it had the potential to put off a significant part of the user base, but it was the simplest and fastest way to make Helix RADE in particular work in macOS and the option with the most "legs.". The Macintosh is now a well-established and serious business machine in lots and lots of industries. And being able to run Windows on a Mac has spurred additional Macintosh sales. With AppleScript playing an increasingly important role the Macintosh, Helix being ...

One of the most infamous symbols of life-threatening pollution is the Chernobyl reactor, which suffered a meltdown in April 1986. To this day, the settlements closest to the reactor site remain depopulated ghost towns; however, the explosion sent a radioactive cloud over most of Europe, and many regions received a fallout level that, while not quite serious enough to require permanent evacuation, is still more than enough to blight local ecosystems and human communities with radiation poisoning. 110 miles away is the region of Bryansk, of which nearly 2 million acres received a heavy dose of fallout pollution, primarily Cesium-137. Hundreds of thousands of people still inhabit this largely agricultural area, and the greatest danger they face is the ingestion of radioactive particles (or radionuclides) that have accumulated in the meat, fat, and milk of local cattle, as well as the produce from local farms and gardens. In some provinces over 20% of all dairy milk is dangerously contaminated. ...
3.2 Internal Exposure Monitoring. Personnel who work at workplaces or environment of which the present of unseal sources or contamination is confirmed are required to undergo internal exposure monitoring. Working with contaminated environment and improper way of working with unsealed sources might lead to intake of the radioactive material which results in internal contamination. The ingress of radioactive materials into the body is through ingestion, inhalation, skin and open wound. In order to assess the intake of radioactive substance in the body, a special instrumentation is used.. Two common methods used to measure internal contamination are direct method and indirect method. Direct method commonly used in whole body counter while indirect method in bioassay. Direct method is a method where the radiation dose is measured directly using measuring instruments. In the other hand, indirect method will require samples namely urine, faeces or sweat. These samples will be analyse in laboratory to ...

There are examples of this type of complex conundrum in nature, in such things as trying to solve 22/7 (which is a never-ending decimal), and in determining the halflives of certain radioactive materials (isotopes), where one half of the material loses its radioactive potency over a certain period of time, but the residual amount keeps getting halved and never quite disappears. ...

Radioactive cesium from the 2011 Fukushima disaster is still being detected in citrus and other plants as far away as Florida, according to a report sent to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). In March 2011, multiple nuclear meltdowns took place at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan. The explosions ejected massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment, most notably radioactive cesium isotopes. In the weeks after the disaster, winds carried airborne radionuclides to every corner of the globe. Most of the radioactivity, however, settled into the Pacific Ocean. The report is Duke Energy Floridas Annual Radiological Environmental Operating Report to U.S. NRC, dated May 5. It notes that immediately following the Fukushima disaster, radioactive iodine and cesium from the plant were detected in Florida vegetation. "The Japanese event also affected broad leaf vegetation sample media throughout the year as long-lived radionuclides (Cs-137) were released at Fukushima multiple ...

Dear friends: Since the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident in March 2011, there have been two types of contributions by nuclear scientists. One type, who represents the voice of TEPCO, has influenced the decision makers of the solutions to the accident, the government strategy of the evacuation zone, the timing of announcement of the core meltdown and the constant public campaign to give the impression that the situation is improving rapidly. The other type, who has been warning the government of the worsening situation, finds their influence over the decision makers and the media circle limited. However, I find it puzzling that there has been so little warning from the nuclear community about the potential for catastrophic accidents or terrorist attack involving the hundreds of spent fuel pools worldwide. I received a clear explanation from Dr. Gordon Edwards, one of Canadas best known independent experts on nuclear technology, uranium, and weapons proliferation. I hope you will better ...

An experiment was carried out to provide a data set specifically designed to allow the development of a model to describe the dynamic behaviour of radiocaesium in sheep tissues. A single intraruminal dose of 134CsCl was given to each of 15 Scottish Blackface ewes, aged 1-2 years. Radiocaesium activity concentrations were measured at various time intervals after dosing in blood, faeces and urine and, after slaughter, in a range of tissues and digestive tract contents. A first order compartment model was developed comprising nine compartments representing various organs and tissues in the body. Rate constants for the model were obtained by optimisation to the experimental results. A limited validation of the model was carried out by using it to calculate tissue transfer coefficients (Ff) and biological half-lives (0.5) of radiocaesium in sheep. The values generated compare favourably with published figures. Applications for the model and constraints on its usage are examined along with ...

The researchers insisted that the levels detected so far are not high enough to be particularly dangerous to humans or marine life. "As an example, even if they were twice as high and I was to swim there every day for an entire year, the dose I would be exposed to is a thousand times less than a single dental X-ray," Buesseler said.. "So the risk [from radiation exposure] is never zero, but when I think of health risk, I always think of the Japanese side of the Pacific instead of ours.". Radioactive cesium from the Fukushima disaster is likely to keep arriving at the North American coast, he said. "Predicting the spread of radiation becomes more complex the closer it gets to the coast.". According to a 2013 study by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Norway, the main part of the radioactive ocean plume from the Fukushima disaster is likely to hit the North American west coast in 2017, with maximum concentrations of radioactivity arriving in 2018. The model showed the bulk of ...
Despite a lack of widespread media coverage and TEPCOs reassurances that things are under control, there is concern that the nuclear disaster at Fukushima - already one of the worst nuclear disasters in human history - is quickly growing even worse.. PBS News reported last year that more than 80 percent of the radioactivity from the three damaged reactors was released into the Pacific Ocean, as 300 tons of radioactive water have leaked from the reactors every day since an earthquake and subsequent tsunami crippled the plant in 2011.. The Pacific Ocean may have diluted much of the radiation, due to its massive volume, yet radiation and debris from the disaster have been detected along the western coast of Canada and the United States. Traces of Fukushima radiation were first detected in early 2015, when trace amounts of cesium-134 and cesium-137 appeared in samples collected near Vancouver Island. Then, in December of last year, researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution detected ...

In an unprecedented food monitoring campaign for radionuclides, the Japanese government took action to secure food safety after the Fukushima nuclear accident (Mar. 11, 2011). In this work we analyze a part of the immense data set, in particular radiocesium contaminations in food from the first year after the accident. Activity concentrations in vegetables peaked immediately after the campaign had commenced, but they decreased quickly, so that by early summer 2011 only a few samples exceeded the regulatory limits. Later, accumulating mushrooms and dried produce led to several exceedances of the limits again. Monitoring of meat started with significant delay, especially outside Fukushima prefecture. After a buildup period, contamination levels of meat peaked by July 2011 (beef). Levels then decreased quickly, but peaked again in September 2011, which was primarily due to boar meat (a known accumulator of radiocesium). Tap water was less contaminated; any restrictions for tap water were canceled ...
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ /ACUTE RADIATION SYNDROME/ Fifty persons involved in the cesium-137 accident in Goiania showed symptoms of whole-body and local acute irradiation and also external or internal contamination mainly due to ingestion or absorption of cesium-137. Fourteen of the 50 developed severe bone marrow depression characterized by neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Eight of these 14 received GM-CSF intravenously. None were submitted to bone marrow transplantation. Four of the 14 died due to hemorrhage and infection. For those with significant internal contamination evaluated by in-vitro and in-vivo assays, Prussian Blue was administered with doses ranging from 1.5 to 10 g/day. Besides Prussian Blue, other measures were taken to increase decorporation of cesium-137, including administration of diuretics, water overload, and ergometric exercises. From 50 to 100 persons are being followed in a medical protocol ...
